America Walks into a Bar A Spirited History of Taverns and Saloons, Speakeasies and Grog Shops【電子書籍】[ Christine Sismondo ]

When George Washington bade farewell to his officers, he did so in New York's Fraunces Tavern. When Andrew Jackson planned his defense of New Orleans against the British in 1815, he met Jean Lafitte in a grog shop. And when John Wilkes Booth plotted with his accomplices to carry out an assassination, they gathered in Surratt Tavern. In America Walks into a Bar, Christine Sismondo recounts the rich and fascinating history of an institution often reviled, yet always central to American life. She traces the tavern from England to New England, showing how even the Puritans valued "a good Beere." With fast-paced narration and lively characters, she carries the story through the twentieth century and beyond, from repeated struggles over licensing and Sunday liquor sales, from the Whiskey Rebellion to the temperance movement, from attempts to ban "treating" to Prohibition and repeal. As the cockpit of organized crime, politics, and everyday social life, the bar has remained vital--and controversial--down to the present. In 2006, when the Hurricane Katrina Emergency Tax Relief Act was passed, a rider excluded bars from applying for aid or tax breaks on the grounds that they contributed nothing to the community. Sismondo proves otherwise: the bar has contributed everything to the American story. Now in paperback, Sismondo's heady cocktail of agile prose and telling anecdotes offers a resounding toast to taprooms, taverns, saloons, speakeasies, and the local hangout where everybody knows your name.

Inn Civility Urban Taverns and Early American Civil Society【電子書籍】[ Vaughn Scribner ]

Examines the critical role of urban taverns in the social and political life of colonial and revolutionary America
From exclusive "city taverns" to seedy "disorderly houses," urban taverns were wholly engrained in the diverse web of British American life. By the mid-eighteenth century, urban taverns emerged as the most popular, numerous, and accessible public spaces in British America. These shared spaces, which hosted individuals from a broad swath of socioeconomic backgrounds, eliminated the notion of "civilized" and "wild" individuals, and dismayed the elite colonists who hoped to impose a British-style social order upon their local community. More importantly, urban taverns served as critical arenas through which diverse colonists engaged in an ongoing act of societal negotiation.
Inn Civility exhibits how colonists' struggles to emulate their British homeland ultimately impelled the creation of an American republic. This unique insight demonstrates the messy, often contradictory nature of British American society building. In striving to create a monarchical society based upon tenets of civility, order, and liberty, colonists inadvertently created a political society that the founders would rely upon for their visions of a republican America. The elitist colonists' futile efforts at realizing a civil society are crucial for understanding America's controversial beginnings and the fitful development of American republicanism.

Taverns and Drinking in Early America【電子書籍】[ Sharon V. Salinger ]

A look into the role of public houses, taverns, alcohol consumption in colonial American society.
Sharon V. Salinger's Taverns and Drinking in Early America supplies the first study of public houses and drinking throughout the mainland British colonies. At a time when drinking water supposedly endangered one's health, colonists of every rank, age, race, and gender drank often and in quantity, and so taverns became arenas for political debate, business transactions, and small-town gossip sessions. Salinger explores the similarities and differences in the roles of drinking and tavern sociability in small towns, cities, and the countryside; in Anglican, Quaker, and Puritan communities; and in four geographic regions. Challenging the prevailing view that taverns tended to break down class and gender differences, Salinger persuasively argues they did not signal social change so much as buttress custom and encourage exclusion.
Praise for Taverns and Drinking in Early America
"The most comprehensive survey to date of this curiously underinvestigated aspect of early American social life . . . [Contains] a wealth of illustrative and amusing anecdotes . . . Well researched and informative." ーSimon Middleton, William and Mary Quarterly
"Offers a fresh perspective on one of the colonial period's most important social institutions and the drinking behavior that was central to it . . . Salinger's work is compelling throughout . . . A significant and satisfying book." ーMark Edward Lender, American Historical Review
"A richly detailed study that helps us understand popular and genteel culture in early America, the place of drink in everyday life, and the relationship between law and perceptions of disorderly behavior." ーPaul G.
The pub is a prominent social institution integral to British identity. From Taverns of Gastropubs: Food, Drink, and Sociality in England charts the historical development of the English public house from the Restoration period to the twenty-first century, culminating in the contemporary gastropub. It explores issues of class, gender, and national identification to understand the social identity of patrons and how publicans conceive of their establishments' organizational identity. In the context of large-scale pub closures since the 1990s the gastropub is viewed as both a reaction to the traditional drinking pub and as a promising alternative. From Taverns to Gastropubs uses historical diaries, industry reports, and a wealth of in-depth interviews in order to understand the rise of the gastropub and how food, drink, and sociality has changed through time.

The Public House in Central Europe Inns, Taverns, and Alehouses in Cracow during the Jagiellonian Dynasty【電子書籍】[ Peter Paul Dobek ]

Public houses-inns, taverns, and alehouses-during the Jagiellonian Dynasty (1385-1572) in the city of Cracow functioned as important establishments in the everyday life of the city. While the city continued to grow and prosper as the preferred residence of the dynasty, inhabitants, travelers, and migrants increasingly relied on the public houses of the conurbation to meet their many needs and desires. Although scholars have studied these establishments throughout Europe during various epochs, they have neglected to analyze the public houses in Cracow during the Jagiellonian era. The Public House in Central Europe: Inns, Taverns, and Alehouses in Cracow during the Jagiellonian Dynasty provides a comprehensive examination of a multitude of sources to reconstruct qualitatively and quantitatively the public houses of the city. This reconstruction reveals public houses' role in the history of the city, their locations, edifices, related activities, and people, including publicans, clients, and others. This book places the establishments of Cracow at the center of a deeply debated topic about the extent and types of violence in public houses, which further addresses their many functions. Contrary to some contemporary accounts and some current secondary literature, the establishments were fundamental to the everyday life of the city and were not centers of nefarious acts.

Chinese Poetry from Zhou to Ming (1000BC-1647AD) The Dynasty-by-Dynasty Evolution of a Civilization From Ancient Hymns to Tang Taverns And Beyond【電子書籍】[ Arthur Waley ]

For generations, Arthur Waley's lyrical translations served as the primary gateway to Chinese poetry for the English-speaking world. Celebrated for rendering classical verse into enduring English poetry, his work reached both popular and scholarly audiences

This volume presents a definitive chronological collection of Arthur Waley's seminal translations, Organized by dynasty, this edition transforms Waley's scattered masterpieces into a coherent historical journey through Chinese literature, from the ancient Zhou foundational texts to the twilight of the Tang. This structure reveals the evolving concerns of Chinese civilization, from ritual and statecraft to intimate personal reflection and profound philosophical inquiry, all through Waley's singular poetic voice.

Waley, a self-taught scholar who never visited Asia yet won the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, rendered classical verse into enduring English poetry, creating a bridge between scholarly precision and accessible artistry that continues to define the Western encounter with China's poetic heritage.

From the solemn hymns of ancient courts to the wine-stained verses of Tang Dynasty taverns, this definitive volume opens a gateway to the golden age of Chinese poetry. It begins with the folk rituals and moral wisdom of the Zhou Book of Songs (Shijing) and the political elegies of the Han. A pivotal shift occurs in the Six Dynasties period, exemplified by the recluse poet T'ao Ch'ien (Tao Yuanming), whose verses on rustic solitude, farming, and wine established a paradigm of Daoist-inspired personal spirituality that Waley championed.

This sets the stage for the Tang dynasty, China's poetic golden age. Here, the romantic genius of Li Po (Li Bai), the wandering Daoist immortal, dominates the High Tang period with his extravagant imagery and emotional intensity. The focus then shifts to the Mid and Late Tang, profoundly shaped by the populist master Po Ch?-i (Bai Juyi). A reformist official, Po Ch?-i crafted deliberately accessible, narrative verse concerned with social reality, governance, and personal loss.

Witness the world through a lens of profound simplicity, feel the enduring human passions of solitude, friendship, loss, and delight, and discover the timeless voice of a civilization that found its purest expression in the perfect line.

Houses of Ill Repute The Archaeology of Brothels, Houses, and Taverns in the Greek World【電子書籍】

The study of ancient Greek urbanism has moved from examining the evidence for town planning and the organization of the city-state, or polis, to considerations of "everyday life." That is, it has moved from studying the public (fortifications, marketplaces, council houses, gymnasiums, temples, theaters, fountain houses) to studying the private (the physical remains of Greek houses). But what of those buildings that housed activities neither public nor privateーbrothels, taverns, and other homes of illicit activity? Can they be distinguished from houses? Were businesses like these run from homes? Classical Athenian writers attest to a diverse urban landscape that included tenement houses (sunoikiai), inns (diaitai, pandokeia), factories (ergasteria), taverns (kapelia), gambling dens (skirapheia), training schools (didaskaleia), and brothels (porneia), yet, despite our knowledge of specific terms, associating them with actual physical remains has not been easy. One such writer, Isaeus, mentions tenement houses that hosted prostitutes and wine sellers, while his contemporary Aeschines refers to doctors, smiths, fullers, carpenters, and pimps renting space. Were tenement houses not simply multi-inhabitant spaces but also multipurpose ones?

Houses of Ill Repute is the first book to focus on the difficulties of distinguishing private and semiprivate spaces. While others have studied houses or brothels, this volume looks at both together. The chapters, by leading scholars in the field, address such questions as "What is a house?" and "Did the business of prostitution leave behind a unique archaeological record?" Presenting several approaches to identifying and studying distinctions between domestic residences and houses of ill repute, and drawing on the fields of literature, history, and art history and theory, the volume's contributors provide a way forward for the study of domestic and entertainment spaces in the Hellenic world.

Contributors: Bradley A. Inns And Taverns Of Old London【電子書籍】[ Henry C. Shelley ]

PREFACE
For all races of Teutonic origin the claim is made that they are essentially home-loving people. Yet the Englishman of the sixteenth and seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially of the latter, is seen to have exercised considerable zeal in creating substitutes for that home which, as a Teuton, he ought to have loved above all else. This, at any rate, was emphatically the case with the Londoner, as the following pages will testify. When he had perfected his taverns and inns, perfected them, that is, according to the light of the olden time, he set to work evolving a new species of public resort in the coffee-house. That type of establishment appears to have been responsible for the development of the club, another substitute for the home. And then came the age of the pleasure-garden. Both the latter survive, the one in a form of a more rigid exclusiveness than the eighteenth century Londoner would have deemed possible; the other in so changed a guise that frequenters of the prototype would scarcely recognize the relationship. But the coffee-house and the inn and tavern of old London exist but as a picturesque memory which these pages attempt to revive.
Naturally much delving among records of the past has gone to the making of this book. To enumerate all the sources of information which have been laid under contribution would be a tedious task and need not be attempted, but it would be ungrateful to omit thankful acknowledgment to Henry B. Wheatley's exhaustive edition of Peter Cunningham's "Handbook of London," and to Warwick Wroth's admirable volume on "The London Pleasure Gardens of the Eighteenth Century." Many of the illustrations have been specially photographed from rare engravings in the Print Boom of the British Museum.
H.C.S.

The Inns and Taverns of "Pickwick"【電子書籍】[ B. W. Matz ]

Literary criticism about The Pickwick Papers by Dickens. According to the author: "Dickens, like all great authors, had a tendency to underestimate the value of his most popular book. At any rate, it is certainly on record that he thought considerably more of some of his other works than he did of the immortal Pickwick. But The Pickwick Papers has maintained its place through generations, and retains it to-day, as the most popular book in our language--a book unexampled in our literature."

The Joy of Tippling is a toast to the importance of drinking together, crafted by the ultimate tippler. Like Ray Oldenburg's bestselling The Great Good Place, in which he coined the now-famous term "third places," his latest book is packed with factual information, humor and wit, personal insights, and sound sociological observations. The Joy of Tippling is a celebration of third places, and a call to community. Ray Oldenburg is known internationally for his book The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffee Shops, Bookstores, Bars, Hair Salons, and Other Hangouts at the Heart of a Community, which appeared in 1989 and is presently in its third edition. He is coauthoring a fourth edition with Karen Christensen.

"Ray Oldenburg's charming, reasoned ode to tippling and tavernsーto moderate social drinking and the places where this occursーis just the book America needs now. I wish every politician would read it and take its lessons to heart." ー David Wondrich, author of Imbibe! and editor of the Oxford Companion of Spirits and Cocktails

"Great news, tipplers! The killjoys, buzzcrushers, pinch-faced scolds, and puritans are WRONG. Knocking a couple back at the local bar is good for you. In The Joy of Tippling, sociologist and inveterate tippler Ray Oldenburg tells us why, backed up with solid research, indisputable facts and real news, all cheerfully served with dash and wit." ー John Tebeau, author of Bars, Taverns, and Dives New Yorkers Love

"Ray Oldenburg proves what wise tipplers already know: that drinking alcohol, in moderation and in warm company, is good for you. Reading The Joy of Tippling is like sitting on a barstool next to your smartest, most charming friend; it's an edifying experience you'll want to return to again and again." ー St. John Frizell, restaurateur, bartender, and Men's Journal drinks correspondent

"In The Joy of Tippling, Oldenburg turns his attention from that sacred social space known as the public house and instead focuses on the very act that brings us togetherーtippling. A delightful read full of anecdotes and wisdom." ー Jeffrey Morgenthaler, author of Drinking Distilled

"Here's a unique, philosophical approach to what draws us weird humans to bar culture. For those interested in delving into the what, whys, and hows, Ray Oldenburg has done thorough research into these complexities. ー Amanda Schuster, AlcoholProfessor.com

"After corresponding with Ray Oldenburg for twenty years, I've had the pleasure of visiting his favorite 'third places' with him and tippling in his home 'saloon,' hanging out with him and his friends. He's mixed his favorite drinks for me, and I gave him his first taste of baijiu, talking all the while. And that's the real point of his new book: bringing people together." ー Karen Christensen, editor of the SAGE Encyclopedia of Community and publisher of The Joy of Tippling

Tavern Sleepover Tales (Part One) Tavern Sleep Over Tales【電子書籍】[ Andy St. Germaine ]

In a world shaped by ancient magic, wandering heroes, mischievous spirits, and quests both legendary and ordinary, passion has a way of weaving its own kind of spell.
Tavern Sleepover Tales (Part One) invites readers into a tapestry of interconnected romantic tales. Each told in the intimate voice of a narrator who lived it, breathed it, and felt every heartbeat of the adventure. These stories unfold across a realm inspired by classic fantasy role-playing worlds: a place where dwarves, orcs, elves, and humans mix freely in bustling taverns, quiet gardens, seaside festivals, and enchanted woodlands. Though swords, spells, and quests form the backdrop, this collection shines a warm, glowing light on the moments between the battles, the private stories whispered by firelight or remembered with a shy smile years later.

Throughout this anthology, love is not an interruption to the journey but an essential part of it. Every tale is written in first person, allowing readers to step directly into the emotions of the storyteller feeling their anticipation, their vulnerability, their mischief, and the sparks that kindle the flames of unforgettable nights.

The first story transports readers to a sun-kissed coast, where the salty breeze carries laughter, music, and the clatter of tankards from a lively beachfront wedding. Our narrator, a sturdy and sharp-tongued orc, attends with his feisty dwarf partner. A pair whose differences only seem to draw them closer, they arrive intending to celebrate someone else's vows, yet fate, the sea, and a few teasing glances conspire to turn the evening into something far more personal. The orc recounts the push-and-pull of their affection: the warmth of their history together, the magnetism of the moment, and the tenderness hidden beneath the dwarf's rough exterior.

The second tale drifts into the quiet heart of a sprawling city, a place where marble courtyards and old stone towers stand beneath a sky speckled with glittering constellations. Here, a human traveler, weary from weeks on the road, finds an unexpected moment of stillness in a moonlit garden nestled behind the city's ancient library. Soft petals perfume the air, silver light dances on the fountain's surface, and between two towering cypress trees stands an elf, graceful, thoughtful, and unlike anyone the narrator has ever met. This story unfolds with the slow, gentle rhythm of two souls discovering harmony in the spaces between words. Readers follow the human's inner thoughts as he tries to make sense of the elf's serene intelligence, subtle flirtation, and quiet depth. Under the stars, the two share a connection that lingers long after the night ends, leaving the narrator permanently changed by a tenderness he never expected to find.

The third and final story: a memory of humiliation and affection. Told by a human adventurer who has never been particularly good at keeping his thoughts to himself, this tale follows a night he and his exuberant elf mistress spent at a raucous festival. What was meant to be a quiet evening quickly escalates into too much mead and impulsive decisions as the two lovers find themselves swept up in the night's wild spirit. The narrator describes how a simple leather belt becomes the catalyst for a spirited moment of wild exploration. Though darker in tone, the story ultimately highlights the warmth of a couple who trust each other completely, who delight in each other's quirks, and who embrace the joy that comes from letting go of expectations.

Together, the three stories in Tavern Sleepover Tales (Part One) form a romantic mosaic. Each piece distinct, yet all connected through the shared heartbeat of a world where magic enhances emotion.
