Uprooted How post-WWII Population Transfers Remade Europe【電子書籍】[ Volha Charnysh ]
|

Each year, millions of people are uprooted from their homes by wars, repression, natural disasters, and climate change. In Uprooted, Volha Charnysh presents a fresh perspective on the developmental consequences of mass displacement, arguing that accommodating the displaced population can strengthen receiving states and benefit local economies. Drawing on extensive research on post-WWII Poland and West Germany, Charnysh shows that the rupture of social ties and increased cultural diversity in affected communities not only decreased social cohesion, but also shored up the demand for state-provided resources, which facilitated the accumulation of state capacity. Over time, areas that received a larger and more diverse influx of migrants achieved higher levels of entrepreneurship, education, and income. With its rich insights and compelling evidence, Uprooted challenges common assumptions about the costs of forced displacement and cultural diversity and proposes a novel mechanism linking wars to state-building.

Uprooted How 3000 Years of Jewish Civilization in the Arab World Vanished Overnight【電子書籍】[ Lyn Julius ]
|

Who are the Jews from Arab countries? What were relations with Muslims like? What made Jews leave countries where they had been settled for thousands of years? What lessons can we learn from the mass exodus of minorities from the Middle East? Lyn Julius undertakes to answer all these questions and more in Uprooted, the culmination of ten years of work studying these issues. Jews lived continuously in the Middle East and North Africa for almost 3,000 years. Yet, in just 50 years, their indigenous communities outside Palestine almost totally disappeared as more than 99 percent of the Jewish population fled. Those with foreign passports and connections generally left for Europe, Australia, or the Americas. Some 650,000-including a minority of ideological Zionists-went to Israel. Before the Holocaust they constituted ten percent of the world's Jewish population, and now over 50 percent of Israel's Jews are refugees from Arab and Muslim countries, or their descendants. This same process is now repeating in Christian and other minority communities across the Middle East. This book also assesses how well these Jews have integrated into Israel and how their struggles have been politicized. It charts the growing clamour for recognition, redress and memorialization for these Jewish refugees, and looks at how their cause can contribute to peace and reconciliation between Israel and the Muslim world. *** "Lyn Julius provides a riveting account of a fascinating, but disgracefully overlooked subject. Anyone who really wants to understand the Middle East, Israel and world history, should read it." --Tom Gross, former Middle East correspondent, Sunday Telegraph; contributor to The Guardian and Wall Street Journal[Subject: Middle East Studies, Jewish Studies, History, Sociology, Politics]

Prepare to go way out of the box. Drawing from the old folk admonishment that

aEUR~It ain't no fun when the rabbit's got the gun', Uprooted: If the Rabbit Had the Gun presents three power-punched tales that will move all who read them in unexpected ways. Each movement, Smack Dab in the Middle, Did We All Fall Down or Did Some of Us Get Pushed?, and In My Final Hours, presents an independent story of challenges common to the human condition from the twisted perspectives of both

the privileged and powerful Black race and members of the oppressed, white, lower

class.
Have you ever felt stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time?

My grandparent's house had a gumball tree and under this tree, as a boy, I would listen and observe as the role models around me discussed the subjects of life. The things discussed became what I believed and held as life principles concerning relationships, religion, finances and health. Years under that old gumball tree were fun and exciting, but fostered detrimental information to me. Years later, I saw that the old gumball tree completely uprooted. I saw symbolism in how God has faithfully uprooted so many of the things that were holding me back. My story is the story of how God will uproot us from what holds us back and replant our soul in places where we will thrive. My story is authentic and painful to recount, but it is also a story that will inspire you to seek the replanting God stands ready to provide for you.

|

How would you live as an undocumented Latino immigrant in the USA? What would you confront at the border? If you survive, what will you face? The thirteen stories in this book--10 fiction and three non-fiction--grab your imagination and transport you into this underground world**.** Some provide a glimpse of the evils in their countries of origin that prompted their migration--dire poverty, crimes with total disregard from human life, endemic rampant corruption, no rules of law, no freedom. In the story Uprooted Agave, to protest his meager salary, a peasant stood before a cacique in the presence "of the large portrait of a president of Mexico, whose eyes basked in immortal greatness, the greatness of the office the public had granted him and the dignitary had forgotten the source." Others describe the dangers of crossing the southern border. In Daydreaming on a Greyhound Bus, a gamin, a girl, her mother, and a coyote cross the deceitfully calm Rio Grande into El Paso, Texas, when the girl falls. "The boy releases himself, jumps into the water, clasps the girl against his body, and pulls her up. A maelstrom circles them, the vacuum sucking them into the depth." Some stories recount the immigrants' daily hard work and tenacity to achieve the American dream in spite of their lack of schooling, foreign language, and different culture. The Mayan Fighter describes this determination: "I cleaned empty cans of paint in a tank with 350 gallons of solvent. The intense odor caused headaches, nausea, and dry heaving. Two or three times a day, I wobbled to the restroom where vomiting erupted with a vengeance over and over. But nothing would make me quit my job." The immigrants' trials and tribulations come alive throughout the book. It describes the racism of some whites because of the newcomers' Indian features. In The Rotten Yard, a white supervisor tells his Mexican subordinate, "Freeing the niggers was a big mistake. They don't work and will destroy this country. Mexicans are the same, niggers disguised with sombreros." Latinos also suffer slavery by some of their well-to-do compatriots who have imported this scourge into the US. In Whispering Waters, a housemaid lies in her small room in a mansion in Wilmette, Illinois, reminiscing about the day her master bought her in the Peruvian jungle: "She watched her father hold his tears back. Her blood seemed to have turned into ice, and her legs did not obey her. She kneeled down and asked him to bless her." The book also contains accounts of dreams fulfilled, people helping people, love and hope. In The Pledge, love blossoms in two youngsters in the midst of dilapidated buildings, gangs, death, and misery. The real story The United States Vs. Oscar Sosa exemplifies the weak laws that fail to protect even legal residents: "The officers handcuffed him, read him the Miranda warning, and took him into a car amidst his protestations. 'What have I done? This is an error. Please, let me go free.' They provided him no reason for the arrest and whisked him off across the state line into a federal prison." The narrative describes the success of many immigrants and the failure of others who end up living in crime-ridden barrios in worse conditions than in their home countries. It also features deception, treason, infidelity, vengeance, hatred, bigamy, ungratefulness. LatinoStories.com has reviewed the work. "The stories in Uprooted Agave are haunting not just because of the way they describe the horrors of living in the US on the fringes--where dignity and livelihoods are threatened--but also because they capture the tragic realities of immigrants crossing and risking it all for their families and themselves."

Uprooted On the Trail of the Green Man【電子書籍】[ Nina Lyon ]

|

Who, or what, is the Green Man, and why is this medieval image so present in our precarious modern times?

An encounter with the Green Man at an ancient Herefordshire church in the wake of catastrophic weather leads Nina Lyon into an exploration of how the foliate heads of Norman stonemasons have evolved into today's cult symbols.

The Green Man's association with the pantheistic beliefs of Celtic Christianity and with contemporary neo-paganism, with the shamanic traditions of the Anglo-Saxons and as a figurehead for ecological movements, sees various paths crossing into a picture that reveals the hidden meanings of twenty-first-century Britain. Against a shifting backdrop of mountains, forests, rivers and stone circles, a cult of the Green Man emerges, manifesting itself in unexpected ways. Priests and philosophers, artists and shamans, morris dancers, folklorists and musicians offer stories about what the Green Man might mean and how he came into being. Meanwhile, in the woods, strange things are happening, from an overgrown Welsh railway line to leafy London suburbia.

Uprooted is a timely, beautifully written and joyfully provocative account of this most enduring and recognisable of Britain's folk images.

If you knew where I come from and what I have been through, you would understand who I am. If we focus on the human connection, our lives will be enriched. If we understand the struggles of others, it might humble us and give us a different perspective. Unless we hear someone else's story, how can we ever get a different perspective? It is through these stories that we gain a sense of appreciation about what type of people we share the world with. From growing up in a war zone to almost spending two decades of my life as a police officer in Canada, I have a unique and extraordinary view into human lives. Differences between people in various parts of the world are often highlighted. Yet, I believe that despite all the perceived differences it is our commonality that is the key to understanding each other. No matter what part of the world we call home, human struggle is part of life everywhere. Despite the struggles in our lives, it is our attitudes that determine our destiny. Rare acts of violence around the world create fear and promote the illusion that our way of life is constantly under threat. Amplifying and embracing the core values of humanity, such as compassion, kindness, understanding, and self-responsibility, will paint a more complete picture of what is happening in our world. As a child, I witnessed the destruction of my birthplace. Almost thirty years have gone by and Afghanistan is still not peaceful. Despite all that goes on in our minds, immigrants try to live a normal life, maintain a positive outlook, and remain hopeful that the next generations will experience less turmoil.

The Uprooted Race, Children, and Imperialism in French Indochina, 1890?1980【電子書籍】[ Christina Elizabeth Firpo ]
|

For over a century French officials in Indochina systematically uprooted m?tis childrenーthose born of Southeast Asian mothers and white, African, or Indian fathersーfrom their homes. In many cases, and for a wide range of reasonsーdeath, divorce, the end of a romance, a return to France, or because the birth was the result of rapeーthe father had left the child in the mother's care. Although the program succeeded in rescuing homeless children from life on the streets, for those in their mothers' care it was disastrous. Citing an 1889 French law and claiming that raising children in the Southeast Asian cultural milieu was tantamount to abandonment, colonial officials sought permanent, "protective" custody of the children, placing them in state-run orphanages or educational institutions to be transformed into "little Frenchmen."

The Uprooted offers an in-depth investigation of the colony's child-removal program: the motivations behind it, reception of it, and resistance to it. M?tis children, Eurasians in particular, were seen as a threat on multiple frontsーcolonial security, white French dominance, and the colonial gender order. Officials feared that abandoned m?tis might become paupers or prostitutes, thereby undermining white prestige. M?tis were considered particularly vulnerable to the lure of anticolonialist movementsーtheir ambiguous racial identity and outsider status, it was thought, might lead them to rebellion. M?tischildren who could pass for white also played a key role in French plans to augment their own declining numbers and reproduce the French race, nation, and, after World War II, empire.

French child welfare organizations continued to work in Vietnam well beyond independence, until 1975. The story of the m?tis children they sought to help highlights the importanceーand vulnerabilityーof indigenous mothers and children to the colonial project. Part of a larger historical trend, the Indochina case shows striking parallels to that of Australia's "Stolen Generation" and the Indian and First Nations boarding schools in the United States and Canada. This poignant and little known story will be of interest to scholars of French and Southeast Asian studies, colonialism, gender studies, and the historiography of the family.

Uprooted How Breslau Became Wroclaw during the Century of Expulsions【電子書籍】[ Gregor Thum ]

How a German city became Polish after World War II

With the stroke of a pen at the Potsdam Conference following the Allied victory in 1945, Breslau, the largest German city east of Berlin, became the Polish city of Wroclaw. Its more than six hundred thousand inhabitantsーalmost all of them ethnic Germansーwere expelled and replaced by Polish settlers from all parts of prewar Poland. Uprooted examines the long-term psychological and cultural consequences of forced migration in twentieth-century Europe through the experiences of Wroclaw's Polish inhabitants.

In this pioneering work, Gregor Thum tells the story of how the city's new Polish settlers found themselves in a place that was not only unfamiliar to them but outright repellent given Wroclaw's Prussian-German appearance and the enormous scope of wartime destruction. The immediate consequences were an unstable society, an extremely high crime rate, rapid dilapidation of the building stock, and economic stagnation. This changed only after the city's authorities and a new intellectual elite provided Wroclaw with a Polish founding myth and reshaped the city's appearance to fit the postwar legend that it was an age-old Polish city. Thum also shows how the end of the Cold War and Poland's democratization triggered a public debate about Wroclaw's "amputated memory." Rediscovering the German past, Wroclaw's Poles reinvented their city for the second time since World War II.

Uprooted traces the complex historical process by which Wroclaw's new inhabitants revitalized their city and made it their own.

Uprooted My Search for Faith, Hope, and Healing in the Barren, Recurrent Cancer Wilderness【電子書籍】[ Cynthia Dano ]
|

In Uprooted, author Cynthia Dano’s life doesn’t just take a detour; it was ripped from the ground entirely. A survivor of ovarian cancer a decade ago, she grapples not only with the recurrent diagnosis but with the disorienting loss of identity, plans, stability, and the foundation she thought she was standing on. To whatever end she might be facing, she was determined to record the emotional rollercoaster of this second battle with cancer. Alternatively, intimate, raw, holy, hilarious, and unflinchingly honest, it often reads like unfiltered journal entries. Uprooted offers no pretensions about the reality of where the end might lead. But this isn’t just a medical memoirーit’s a story of everything that gets torn away in the aftermath: a home, a retirement, a sense of safety, a framework of faith. What follows is not a clean arc of triumph but a winding path through anger, grace, absurdity, grief, and surprising moments of joy. Along the way, the author embarks on a compelling search for the anchors of faith and hope, seeking a path to spiritual and emotional healing within this challenging terrain. Uprooted is a companion for anyone who’s had the ground ripped out from under them. It’s a reminder that while life doesn’t always go back to what it was, something real and rooted can still grow in its place.

The Uprooted Improving Humanitarian Responses to Forced Migration【電子書籍】[ Susan F. Martin ]
|

By conservative estimates about 50 million migrants are currently living outside of their home communities, forced to flee to obtain some measure of safety and security. In addition to persecution, human rights violations, repression, conflict, and natural and human-made disasters, current causes of forced migration include environmental and development-induced factors. Today's migrants include the internally displaced, a category that has only recently entered the international lexicon. But the legal and institutional system created in the aftermath of World War II to address refugee movements is now proving inadequate to provide appropriate assistance and protection to the full range of forced migrants needing attention today.

The Uprooted is the first volume to methodically examine the progress and persistent shortcomings of the current humanitarian regime. The authors, all experts in the field of forced migration, describe the organizational, political, and conceptual shortcomings that are creating the gaps and inefficiencies of international and national agencies to reach entire categories of forced migrants. They make policy-based recommendations to improve international, regional, national, and local responses in areas including organization, security, funding, and durability of response. For all those working on behalf of the world's forced migrants, The Uprooted serves as a call to arms, emphasizing the urgent need to develop more comprehensive and cohesive strategies to address forced migration in its complexity.

The Uprooted A Hitler Legacy【電子書籍】[ Dorit Bader Whiteman ]
|

Whiteman, who escaped from Nazi-occupied Austria with her family, is now a clinical psychologist in New York. Her impassioned, riveting study of the Jews who managed to leave Germany and Austria before Hitler implemented mass executions and death camps is based partly on interviews with 190 escapees. She tells the incredible story of the Kindertransport operation, which took 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi-occupied countries to England by train and ferry. Adolf Eichmann, then an emigration official, disdainfully approved this mass exodus. We learn of the formidable barriers escapees faced in getting out, of horrid or supportive foster homes, of the trauma and pain of being forcibly uprooted. Many escapees endured years of poverty before re-establihsing themselves. Whiteman rejects Hannah Arendt's thesis that German Jews' cultural assimilation led to their political blindness in a "fool's paradise." This is a distinctive contribution to Holocaust literature.

I am a Trinidad-born American citizen settled down with my husband and two children in New Jersey. I was educated in London with a Business Administrative Degree and my occupation was that of a print and fashion model. After the abolition of slavery by the British, a vast number of Immigrants were taken from the Indian sub-continent where they became indentured laborers in the Caribbean. Desperate people were thrown together under tight conditions with rigid plantation discipline under the British Empire.

This is a breathtaking, fascinating narrative biography of my ancestors who went to work in the cane fields under the excruciating commands of the British Empire where after five years they were freed and became successful businessmen.

This work is painstaking in documenting this true story. It is alive, definitely dramatic, clear and exceptionally moving. My research into this story has never been told before and now must be unfolded because of its powerful and unique history of past times that were unknown to people all over the globe. The story traces my familys history from the streets of Calcutta to the sugar cane plantations of Trinidad owned by the British and these East Indian indentured laborers living in slave-like conditions, then starting several successful businesses and growing from poverty.

I trust that you will see this book as not just my own familys journey but in a large measure indicative of the struggles, successes, and failures of the many thousands of Indians who came to the New World as indentured laborers and worked so hard to become successful. Our story is largely unknown in America It is alive and I have tried to make the story inspirational and full of human kindness.

Uprooted Race, Public Housing, and the Archaeology of Four Lost New Orleans Neighborhoods【電子書籍】[ D. Ryan Gray ]

|

The archaeology of four New Orleans neighborhoods that were replaced by public housing projects

Uprooted: Race, Public Housing, and the Archaeology of Four Lost New Orleans Neighborhoods uses archaeological research on four neighborhoods that were razed during the construction of public housing in World War II?era New Orleans. Although each of these neighborhoods was identified as a “slum” historically, the material record challenges the simplicity of this designation. D. Ryan Gray provides evidence of the inventiveness of former residents who were marginalized by class, color, or gender and whose everyday strategies of survival, subsistence, and spirituality challenged the city’s developing racial and social hierarchies.

These neighborhoods initially appear to have been quite distinct, ranging from the working-class Irish Channel, to the relatively affluent Creole of Color?dominated Lafitte area, to the former location of Storyville, the city’s experiment in semilegal prostitution. Archaeological and historical investigations suggest that race was the crucial factor in the areas’ selection for clearance. Each neighborhood manifested a particular perceived racial disorder, where race intersected with ethnicity, class, or gender in ways that defied the norms of Jim Crow segregation.

Gray’s research makes use of both primary documentsーincluding census records, city directories, and even the brothel advertising guides called “Blue Books”ーand archaeological data to examine what this entailed at a variety of scales, reconstructing narratives of the households and communities affected by clearance. Public housing, both in New Orleans and elsewhere, imposed a new kind of control on urban life that had the effect of making cities both more segregated and less equal. The story of the neighborhoods that were destroyed provides a reminder that their erasure was not an inevitable outcome, and that a more equitable and just city is still possible today. A critical examination of the rise of public housing helps inform the ongoing debates over its demise, especially in light of the changing face of post-Katrina New Orleans.
