Learning A Rising Knight: Volume 2, Issue 10【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

A Rising Knight: Vol2, Iss10
Sometimes putting the world together, means first taking it apart. It means letting go of your preconceived notions and accepting that things might not be the way you imagined them. It’s time for Vlad to get out of his own way and let world unfold before him.

Excerpt

"The reason I brought up the subject is because it gives you an idea of what kind of Art wielding the Reigh is."

"An imprecise one. Like all art." Vlad said crossly.

"Not at all." Ethan shook his head. "Using the Reigh is as much a science as art. Each and every spell has necessary elements and connections, if you fail to meet those requirements the spell will not function as intended. But that only holds true if you choose to construct and use a spell as prescribed. What you need to understand, is that you are not bound by any particular method or orthodoxy. For you, effect is much more important than any particular technique used to generate it."

"What?" Kat ejaculated. "That’s not what we were taught!"

"Of course not. Your belief that what you were taught is the definitive word is the reason you were told it was the definitive word. Regular schools are set up to teach regular wizards. A regular wizard is taught to use a specific spell, woven in a specific way, to cause a specific effect. That method is fine for most wizards but a Knight works differently. A Knight creates, adapts and undoes spells as often as he uses one by route. Even in weaving a relatively simple spell, a Knight may deviate wildly from the standard method.”

“So for me it’s more art than science.” An uncomfortable thought.

“No." The elder wizard smiled excitedly. "For you this science is an art. You have the ability to take the basic tools given to any wizard and use them in ways no other would dream of. Yet, even when you create something new, you are still bound by the nature of your medium. Allow me to use Kathryn’s metaphor of language. The difference between what a regular wizard does and what you do is the difference between someone who speaks a language and someone who redefines a language."

The Rhetorical Rise and Demise of “Democracy” in Russian Political Discourse, Volume 3 Vladimir Putin and the Redefinition of “Democracy” ? 2000-2008【電子書籍】[ David Cratis Williams ]

In Volume Three of this four-volume series, we examine the rhetorical development that occurred during the first two terms of Vladimir Putin’s tenure as president of the Russian Federation. Initially, Putin appeared to follow in the path set by his predecessor, Boris Yeltsin, vowing that Russia was, at heart, a European nation and would be a westward facing democracy going forward. He even mentioned partnering with the EU and NATO. Eight years later, at the 2007 Munich Security Conference, Putin excoriated the West for, in his words, attempting to create a “unipolar world” in which NATO expansion threatened Russia’s security, the United States acted as the world’s sole “hegemon,” and Europe simply followed orders, relinquishing any sense of agency in its own affairs.

Destruction's Children A Rising Knight Volume 3【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

Why do you fight? Why do you pay the price? Destruction’s Children brings the war home for the Knights of the revolution. Jackal is forced to relive his mother’s brutal death while Olga dreams of getting blood on her hands. Vlad reaches a pivotal point when forced to confront reality, there is always someone better. What do you do when you can’t see the way forward anymore? Make one up.

Excerpt

Taking a sliver more of his attention from the attacking wall of spells, Vlad split his single thick cord of earth into an eight-headed hydra of golden brown light. Single spears started thrusting up from the ground in a continuous assault, like a deadly life-sized whack-a-mole. One and all the spears stabbed straight at the blond Knight. The shifting grinding sounds of salt and silica compacting and grinding together carried a long ways on the flat ground.

Besieged from all angels, every way Mikael turned another spear, or three, tried to spit him. He danced and jumped among them with exceeding grace. Not so much as brushing a spear. Glittering brown strands threaded through their pale lengths warned him. Touch one and it would explode like a fragmentation grenade. Fast enough to dodge spears was not fast enough to dodge shrapnel. Probably wouldn’t do much damage against the kinds of shields he likely had. But he didn’t dare give Vlad an opening like that. His advance was halted.

One of his advances halted anyway. A sliver taken away from the wall of spells was a sliver too much. Vlad couldn't keep up with them anymore. Inch by slow inch the aurora seemed to grow larger as the first waves of destructive spells got closer.
Not a minute into the fight and they were at a stalemate. Mikael was fast but the spears were quickly becoming a forest of stalagmites around him. Touching even one would set off a chain reaction that would set of the others. He could let go of the spell he’d woven to attack but that would mean giving up the initiative to go on the defensive. Vlad was worse shape. If he took concentration away from his attack to shore up his defense Mikael would start advancing again. Retreat was not an option. Unraveling that many spells at once pushed his abilities to their limit. Trying it awhile moving would have been impossible. As hard as he worked the spells were still getting closer. Worst case the blonde Knight would wait him out.

Whose luck would run out first? Time drew itself into a thin brittle line as the desert sands awaited and answer with bated breath.

Neither was apparently very inclined to trust in luck. Almost as one, both men decided it was time to engage Knight State.

Wraith stopped unraveling spells and charged forward at an angle, meaning to cut the corner of the firing solution's first wave. Instantly the wall of spells rushed forward, enveloping the Knight in color and sound and pressure. No matter how tightly packed a firing solution, was there were always gaps in between individual spells. Pack your spells too tightly together and they could render each other useless and or, worse, rebound on you. Wraith found those gaps and moved through them with consummate grace. He put Mikael's earlier dance to shame. In the Midst of his dance he felt his spell go off, the spears had exploded.

Seven seconds. That was how long it took wraith to make beyond the far edge of spell fire. Seven seconds of blinding colors, deafening sounds and crushing pressure. He survived.

He was not the only one. Mikael’s remote point dissipated and Wraith felt him stop weaving whatever that big spell of his had been. At first he could see only a vague image through the haze of dissipating spell fire. But the air finally cleared enough to let him see clearly. Mikael stood untouched in the rubble of Vlad's forest of stone spears. The air around his rippled more than heat haze could have accounted for. A broad smile stretched across his face.

"I suppose this means you're ready to stop pussyfooting around."

Origins of Life Volume II Contemplations and Doubts【電子書籍】[ Vladivoj Valkovic ]

In Origins of Life Volume II, life and its origin are inspected from traditional and unexpected points of view. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, discussing astrobiology; chemical evolution; and how the Universe accommodates life, molecular biology, and philosophy. It is an open-minded approach, fully referenced throughout, and each chapter includes a further reading section for anyone wishing to learn more about that perspective on the origins of life.

First, everything started, with the Big Bang, from nothing. It appears now that everything was aiming toward our existence, some 13.75 × 109 years later, being capable of understanding it all. We did it using powerful tools: science, philosophy, and religion. Although we appreciate the contributions made by philosophy and religion, our contemplations and doubts are based on the plentiful scientific evidence provided.

The reader will be guided from make-up of the "life stage" (Universe), tools and materials needed for the living matter to be formed in the small part of the Universe, which one could call Human Neighborhood, or the Local Universe. It contains galaxies, galaxy clusters, and voids, and the Milky Way and its satellites influencing each other during this time span.

The book is easy to read, accompanied by numerous references; it could be of use to the expert in the field as well as for curious minds with a scientific, philosophical, or religious background.

Failure A Rising Knight: Volume 2, Issue 9【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

A Rising Knight: Volume 2, Issue 9
Everything falls, everything burns, and even Knights do not live forever. Breaking his own rules for once Vlad has to lead a younger Knight to safety beyond the cities and the reach of the Knight Hunters. Rules are there for a reason. There are consequences when you break them. Especially if you’re the one who made them.

Excerpt

"Move!" Wraith said before braking from cover behind a short wall that was getting shorter by the second. Spells reduced the wall to rubble moments after he did. The swirling bit of darkness ran north, bare soles flying over cobble stones fitted so well he could not feel the joints between them. Neat townhouses flanked the street. Shadowed edifices under a setting sun that turned the sky to blood. He trusted Tooan to follow.

Spells peppered off the spheroid shield covering the fleeing Knights. Raindrops that sounded like bombs. They flared brightly as they died. Power crackled in air heavy with bolts of lightning in a dozen colors and streams of flame in a dozen more. Spent magic coated his tongue in the taste of ozone. The shield was holding, but with each successive hit the attenuation of the cords became just a little more out of sync. Soon holes would begin to appear, small at first. They would grow as his enemies shifted their attention to the openings. Dearly he wished he'd had time to complete his first prototype of a Harrower belt.

Tooan and he ran flat out down a side street leading to an open square in Flamm?ternelle. Spell fire rained down on them from what seemed like every roof and window. The Knight could sense1 his pursuers, a hundred shining lights moving in the back of his mind. If he didn't know better he would have thought there really were a hundred of them back there. The number of spells coming down was right but Wraith did know better. Too many of those firing points just repeated the same spell over and over at regular intervals. Automated track and attack spells pre-charged with the Reigh. At best there was half a battalion after the two Knights, twenty to twenty-five soldiers at most. They kept moving from position to position, simultaneously making it impossible for him to strike back and masking their exact numbers. His enemies knew this ground and used every inch tho their advantage. Council Guards. As good as the Knight Hunters had gotten lately the Guard still made them look like chumps.

Wraith had thought they were in the clear. Jack and Olga had diverted away the last of the Broken Bolts in their path. It had been a deception. Councilor's Guards from house Javelin had come in to relieve the preoccupied Hunters and the pair of Knights had blundered right into them.

The Black Hammer A Rising Knight: Volume 3, Issue 11【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

No advantage is ever absolute. The turn of a card at the wrong moment can take it all away. In battle with a Harrower battleship Wriath will learn what it is to be on the receiving end of an assault. It’s a battle on the high seas as Wraith goes head to head with the BLACK HAMMER.

Excerpt

The sound of the waves changed, a new note in the endless rise and fall. Something was coming up from the depths. Navel gazing lethargy left in a moment. Waves swelled underneath and stood him on his feet.

Five hundred feet away a thick shaft of black metal rose from the cold ocean. Rose and raced towards him. Two more followed, one fore, one aft. Then a crossbeam attached to the center poll. A crimson cloth rose along with the crossbeam. The construct continued to rise and soon it crested a wave. The bulk burst into the open air.

Her prow curved downward like a plow, breaking blue sea to white foam. A sleek, fearsome looking thing. All deadly subtle curves, those masts were the only straight lines on the whole of the ship. The black metal hull gleamed brightly in the sunlight, untarnished by five hundreds years of saltwater. Crimson sails splashed square patches of blood against the cerulean sky. A masthead in the shape of snarling dragon’s head thrust forward five feet before her prowl. An open threat for any that dared attack.

Exactly as intended. The black flag, bearing the red and gold death’s-head told the tale of this awe-inspiring apparition. The Black Hammer, a Dragon class Harrower warship.

Fractional Derivatives for Physicists and Engineers Volume II Applications【電子書籍】[ Vladimir V. Uchaikin ]

This book brings new perspectives in front of the reader dealing with turbulence and semiconductors, plasma and thermodynamics, mechanics and quantum optics, nanophysics and astrophysics. The first derivative of a particle coordinate means its velocity, the second means its acceleration, but what does a fractional order derivative mean? Where does it come from, how does it work, where does it lead to? The two-volume book written on high didactic level answers these questions. The first volume (ISBN: 978-3-642-33910-3) contains a clear introduction into such a modern branch of analysis as fractional calculus. This second volume develops a wide panorama of applications of the fractional calculus to various physical problems.

This book is addressed to students, engineers and physicists, specialists in theory of probability and statistics, in mathematical modeling and numerical simulations, to everybody who doesn't wish to stay apart from the new mathematical methods becoming more and more popular.

Heir to Sin A Rising Knight: Volume 3, Issue 2【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

Even in a city flying beyond the clouds, one as alien as it is beautiful, some things never change. Fathers are indulgent of their daughters while mothers take them to task. Except most families aren’t in a silent fight for survival against a ruthless and deadly enemy. Come meet Olga’s family, the bloody shard of glass imbedded in her clenched fist.

Excerpt

Keeping her breath even Olga pushed herself for more speed. Her waifish body was a nude blur as she moved through the memorized forms of the serpent style of Trakan. Hair tied back in a neat horse tail her blue eyes were razor focused. The heir of Novakatana’s movements were sinuous, relying on sudden burst of speed for striking power. She liked the style, it fit what she thought a fight should be. Quick and decisive.

The sweat streaking her body, the tiny twinges in her limbs when she went for a difficult form, the small mistakes she made. All of it spoke of Olga not using her Knight state. If she was ever going to get good she needed to do it without aide.

Stealing the instructional book for this form had not been easy. Anything having to do with the Harrowers was prescribed reading. Vlad’s friend, the ambassador, probably had a full set of twelve lying around, but she and Jack had agreed not to go there unless they had to. Being able to sell illicit books was one of the major privileges of the ambassadorship. But Wraith had to respect them if he was going to teach them.

And he would teach them. Vlad was her way, her only way of getting better at the thing that defined Knights. Combat. The only way that did not involve running away to Safe Haven or reveling herself by trying to hunt demons. He knew things about combat they didn’t put in books. Things about Knight combat that had never been in a book.

Cleaners A Rising Knight: Volume 2, Issue 6【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

A Rising Knight: Vol2, Iss6
There are those who make the mess and those who clean it up. These are the people who clean up after Vlad. The ones who hide the ripples of his existence and pay the price for protecting the world. This is the price they pay for trying to find a bit of justice in all the dirt. Next time Cleaners.

Excerpt

Yup, a good month. Then June came and that was the end of it.
One of the satellites picked up the usual particle traces and Lex was called out of dinner to go with Francis and follow up. It was the first time he was called away from the family for work in a month. They told him to quit apologizing and just go. Once in a while wasn’t a big deal.

When Francis and he got to the alley where the trace was detected, Lex could tell that this was not their usual kind of follow up. The alley was torn up. Cracks spider webbing the walls and pavement, smooth sided gashes everywhere and a shiny layer of dust covering the whole scene.

While Francis took samples and recorded particle radiation levels, Lex looked the scene over.. He’d never seen anything exactly like this. No bullet holes or blood splatter. Still, eyes used to crime scenes could follow the story.

From the directionality of the damage he guessed two combatants. The gases radiated outward from a central point. They were probably from whatever had finished things. The dust was probably trace of some sort. He wasn’t sure what made him think that a fight had gone down. It didn’t look like any fight scene he had ever worked, but it had a certain feel to it. Not the first time he’d walked in too late for the show.

Then the kid started getting excited and that was the end of Lex’s easy days. A second exotic particle. The kid nearly creamed his pants when he confirmed it back at the lab.

Migraine A Rising Knight: Volume 2, Issue 11【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

A Rising Knight: Volume 2, Issue 11
Your perspective determines your reality. It can broaden or limit our opportunities, turn triumph into tragedy and choke off the person you are meant to be. Vlad was born and raised a pessimist and it has cost in friends and experience and happiness. What happens when pessimism comes up against possibility? One must yield.

Excerpt

Droplets of rain peppered Vlad's face as he spun he upside-down in mid air. With his eyes closed he could feel them landing on his eyelids. A good balm for a migraine. Not as good as what was waiting for him down below, but it was a start. Just at the point where his balance began to tip to the side, blades of fire bloomed from the knight. Three rings of orbiting compressed flame, burning a fierce livid yellow. Thin as razors but hardened by earth and lightning they spun counter to his own rotation. And then he began to fall.

The knight landed hard but he landed on his feet. His orbiting spells shifted in their rotation. The top two grinding against each other in a shower of saffron sparks. Soon enough they righted themselves and were ready to face Vlad's migraine medicine. A pair of demons.

Whatever ails you, it’s nothing a good fight can't help.

Screaming as they came, the pair of demons charged at him. The roof they stood shared in Dumbo was wide so they had plenty of room to maneuver. One looked like a cross between a bull and a lizard, all horns and claws but no fangs to speak of. It walked on four feet. The other was a monster version of a leafy fern, razor edged fronds spinning as it came. They crossed each other's paths back and forth, trying to confuse the Knight. Shuffling would do them no good now. His jump had done its job and taken away their advantage of positioning. They no longer surrounded him. Now it was a straight on fight.

Humanities A Rising Knight: Volume 4, Issue 7【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

When you reach the place where the road ends, what do you do? For almost a year Vlad has worked to learn what it means to be a wizard. And now he had. It means Blood and death and never giving up no matter how many times you get knocked down. But day to day, hour to hour, what's a newly minted wizard to do? When your choices are endless what is there for you to decide?

Excerpt

Toying with demons wasn't, "ha, ha," Funny. But it was usually worth at least a chuckle or two. Had been in the past anyway. Now it was just depressing. Vlad felt like a bully. Sure demons were literally as low as any being could sink. That didn't make playing with their lives, such as they were, anything but cruel.

Not that he minded being cruel, that was just part of his nature. But he didn't feel like being cruel at the moment. The Knight had just taken the demon's leg out from under it with whip crack of hardened air.

The demon, which looked like a cross between a catfish and a pig with a mouth full of fangs, got up and tried to run away again. Things were getting so the weaker ones were starting to try running before fighting. They were getting wise to the fact that whatever was hunting them, was more than any level one was could handle. Vlad would have to expand his area of operation soon. Once he cleared out the New York maybe he'd go over the water to Jersey. Had to be a lot of demons in Jersey.

Pig head demon started running toward the huge open door of the warehouse. Vlad had tracked it by Reigh sense to the place. Early morning light filtered in through the crack, brining light to the gloom. He stood in the dark beyond the light, a man who looked about twenty-five dressed for school in a black tee-shirt and jeans. The shadows on his oval face were particularly deep today, slithering down from brown hair and brown eyes.

Everything That Has an End A Rising Knight Volume 4, Issue 12【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

Everything that has a beginning has an end. Out of the ashes of his assault on the home of his greatest enemy, Vlad comes home to the people who know and love him best. He brings them Plague and storm and death. They will give him truth and hope. And in the end he will know the way forward.

Excerpt

"For the last time, we only came to talk to Vlad. If you will simply tell us where we can find him we will be on our way." Jackal spoke calmly, coal black eyes stead on Ethan's sky blue, but you could still hear the heat in his voice. The younger wizard's coached, formal way of speaking grated against the elder. It didn't escape Ethan's notice he was dealing with a Knight. A wizard born for war and battle. This boy could likely rip out his threat before the older wizard could move.

Even so, he'd be damned before telling this boy where to find Vlad. If the boy didn't want to be found that was his choice. Not that he could tell them where his former student was even if he'd wanted. He just wished Katherine were elsewhere than behind him.

These two Knights had shown up and demanded to speak with Vlad. Ethan and Kat were waiting up, hoping the boy would come by. They'd already let out the few customers and closed up shop. Kat had ignited a pair of lights above the foyer before the counter area casting them in clear bright light. Long bookshelves receded into shadows. The Novakatana heir stood behind her friend at the edge of the light, chill blue eyes studying the room. A cute little blond thing, she was probably more dangerous than her partner.

"What part of five seconds don't you understand?" Jackal those focused Knight's eyes, killer's eyes, on Ethan. The youngest son of house Arrowhead had seen them before and was not impressed. "Get out now."

"We're not going anywhere until-"

"Boys, boys, boys, really now. If you were going to be having a measuring contest, the least you could've done is invite me."

The Brothers Blackblade A Rising Knight: Volume 3, Issue 3【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

Always two there are. One brother born to wage the war the other to defend the home. Jackal and Hyena are the prey dogs of the house of the Black Blade and there is more than blood between them. Once they were as close as right hand and left. But that’s no longer true. Now they have to find a way past the pain. Otherwise one of them will end up dead.

Excerpt

"Are you truly so stupid, or do you have some deeply ingrained desire for self-destruction?" Jack could feel his brother's furious breath again his face but could not turn away. "He. Will. Break. You. It is what he does to any that stand in the way of what he desires. He will command that it should be so and gaggle of lackeys will leap to the task. They will burn away everything that is you and when they are done, what is left, will be but a puppet for our father. He will sit you on a shelf and pull you out when he wants to make a show of you. That is the fate you buy yourself with this foolishness."

Fear thrilled up Jack spine for a moment. He did not doubt his father capable of such a thing. Yet Olga and Vlad were waiting for him. So were the Knights they intended to rescue. He was the one with the information they needed to find them. His fear did not matter. Ultimately, his life did not matter either. A lord was his duty. So, however debase his father, Jackal Blackblade still had a duty.

"Again, thank you, but I can take care of myself." For what seemed like the thousandth time Jack began turn away from his brother.

Stars exploded in his eyes as Hy's fist connected with Jack’s face. The pain heralded by those star wasn't as bad as his shock. No one should have been able to do that to a Knight. Hy followed the first punch with a second but Jack was ready this time. He caught the blow on his forearm. Within the Knight state this wouldn’t have been a contest. But engaging his Knight State would give him away. This would have to be sloppy and dirty. He shot forward and slammed his forehead into his brother's nose, eliciting a cry of pain.

King's Knight A Rising Knight: Volume 4【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Duran ]

Wriath is coming and war is coming with him. Vlad has walked three journeys on his path to becoming a Harrower, a King’s Knight. And they have all lead back to the wizard world. To the place he had been an outcast freak, a hated reminder of days gone by and terrifying signpost of things to come. Now its time for him to become something far more dangerous, a man with noting to lose.

Excerpt:

Now that they were in a good uproar it was time to really cut loose.

Lavishly appointed by lavishly appointed corridor, Wraith made his way through the halls of castle Blackblade. Everywhere he went Council guards were waiting for him. His estimation of their skills had not been wrong. These men and women, who fought with strategy and covered each other's backs. A real military unit.

Six Council guards made up the second group of them he ran into. Automatic barriers should have come up from the floor to give them cover. Taking the network down had locked in their shuttered position. But Council guards weren't so easily deterred. They had barricaded themselves behind a toppled twenty-foot tall statue of a nude man. The stone figure glimmered with hastily laid defensive spells.

Spellfire rained down as soon as he came into rage. Wraith danced his way through lightning and flame as he closed the distance to the defenders. Heat seared the air around him to oven temperatures and tested the effectiveness of his shields. He didn't counterattack as he danced, saving his energy for the moment he could see the whites of their eyes.

When Wraith finally got that close, however, he found the guards almost fully retreated down a side passage. Again, smart. If an enemy could get past that kind of firepower, trying to take him on in close combat was suicidal. Better to retreat, regroup and come at him again later from a different angle.

A little faster to disengage and they all might have lived. As it was, he only managed to take down one of the six and possibly maim another.

The plan for Wraith's infiltration of the castle originally depended on chaos. Vlad had thought that meant holding back enough to allow the guards to raise the alarms. Maybe a skirmish or two thrown in. Now, he reconsidered. If the Guards were this good bringing anything less than his best could get him killed. He'd become too accustomed to fighting Hunters, playing with his food in order to savor the meal. These were not Hunters. Hunters were trained to the level of pre-Ocean grunts. They were so afraid of their master the only thing keeping them in line was the huge salary that came with the job. Again he was impressed by the power of loyalty.

So he stopped holding back. He stopped striding arrogantly down passages and started sneaking his way from corridor to hall to palatial room. When he attacked he did it from the shadows or out of blind turns, striking hard and fast and drawing blood when he did.

But if he stepped up his game, so did they.
