Rectify The Power of Restorative Justice After Wrongful Conviction【電子書籍】[ Lara Bazelon ]
|

A powerful argument for adopting a model of restorative justice as part of the Innocence Movementーso exonerees, crime victims, and their communities can come together to heal

In Rectify, a former Innocence Project director and journalist Lara Bazelon puts a face to the growing number of men and women exonerated from crimes that kept them behind bars for yearsーsometimes decadesーand that devastate not only the exonerees but also their families, the crime victims who mistakenly identified them as perpetrators, the jurors who convicted them, and the prosecutors who realized too late that they helped convict an innocent person.

Bazelon focuses on Thomas Haynesworth, a teenager arrested for multiple rapes in Virginia, and Janet Burke, a rape victim who mistakenly IDed him. It took over two decades before he was exonerated. Conventional wisdom points to an exoneration as a happy ending to tragic tales of injustice, such as Haynesworth’s. However, even when the physical shackles are left behind, invisible ones can be profoundly more difficult to unlock.

In the midst of Bazelon’s frustration over the blatant limitations of courts and advocates, her hope is renewed by the fledgling but growing movement to apply the centuries-old practice of restorative justice to wrongful conviction cases. Using the stories of Thomas Haynesworth, Janet Burke, and other crime victims and exonerees, she demonstrates how the transformative experience of connecting isolated individuals around mutual trauma and a shared purpose of repairing harm unite unlikely allies. Movingly written and vigorously researched, Rectify takes to task the far-reaching failures of our criminal justice system and offers a window into a future where the power it yields can be used in pursuit of healing and unity rather than punishment and blame.

When Ireland Fell Silent A Story of a Family's Struggle Against Famine and Eviction【電子書籍】[ Harolyn Enis ]

|

WHEN IRELAND FELL SILENT takes the reader back to 1845-1849 to County Mayo in a gripping, suspenseful story that reveals the true causes of the Great Irish Famine as told through the eyes of a fictional family named Reilly. Eighteen-year-old Liam Reilly has no idea that his world is about to be shattered. He cherishes County Mayo with its beauty and close family even though life is hard. As tenants, all the Reilly’s crops go to the English landlord as rent while they eat mainly potatoes. Few Irish realize that the English are planning a great change and want to get rid of farmers to create pasture. Unaware, Liam still hopes for rights and a better life, especially when he meets the beautiful Colleen at a wedding in nearby Ballinglass. Terror strikes her village when her landlord razes it to the ground to create pasture. Her family is forced to the dreaded workhouse, and thinking he sees her at a high window, Liam prays she will survive. Liam’s brother Niall accompanies friends from Ballinglass to England to earn passage to America. When he announces he too is emigrating, the devastated family prepares for his “American wake,” knowing this goodbye is forever. Six months pass without a word, and the family worries. A partial blight occurs the year before and Liam frets as the family shares dwindling supplies with beggars. Turf cutting, harvest, and roof thatching distract Liam until one dawn in August, he hears the door open and Mother’s scream. Horrified, he rushes out to plants consumed by fungus. All Ireland’s potatoes are ruined and starvation spreads. People gather to write petitions, begging for assistance, but high government officials in London refuse to interfere and send more soldiers to guard convoys taking out food to port. Liam and his father risk arrest and organize thousands in a peaceful march to ask their landlord for mercy. Trapped in a desperate struggle, the family pulls together with great courage. When Liam kills a large swan at Christmas, they celebrate with extended family. But the government confiscates their meager goods as tax and pushes the family to the edge. Liam and his brother Sean face constant danger from soldiers as they scavenge for food and take enormous risks for the sake of the family. Intense conflict and suspense propel the story forward until at the end, Liam must overcome great obstacles if he is to save his mother and sisters. At 10 Downing Street, 1849, government leaders argue about policy while Ireland falls silent.

Crime Fictions How Racist Lies Built a System of Mass Wrongful Conviction【電子書籍】[ Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve ]
|

From award-winning sociologist Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve comes the first account of mass wrongful conviction in America, indicting a system purposefully designed to ensnare Black youth in order to close cases

Wrongful convictions have long been dismissed as rare exceptions to an otherwise well-oiled criminal justice machine. But, after years spent investigating the largest criminal courthouse in the nation, Chicago’s Cook County, Dr. Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve began to uncover a far more chilling truth. Wrongful convictions are not accidental, nor anomalous: There are at least hundreds of cases indicting innocent Black youth of crimes they didn’t commit. Arresting and incarcerating kids is the pointーthe “evidence” is tailored to fit.

In a suspenseful narrative account based on years of interviews, archival research, and the excavation of hidden documents, Gonzalez Van Cleve presents an ironclad “howdunit,” illustrating the steps that our supposed system of justice takes to “find” criminals, coerce confessions, and bury evidence.

A clear pattern emerges as Lee Hester, a disabled fourteen-year-old boy, is branded a “super predator” and convicted of killing his teacher. At just seven years old, Romarr Gipson is charged with a murder that is physically impossible for him to commit. Groups of boys like the Roscetti Four and Dixmoor Five are characterized as “wolf packs” in a pattern that connects them to the Central Park Five. These “crime fictions” are actively produced, perfected by police, enshrined in our legal records by the courts, and reinforced by the media.

Placing the exonerated boys at the center of their own story, Crime Fictions is a devastating, systemic account that leaves us to wonder just how many innocent souls have been claimed by the racist lies police tell.

A Heart Of Conviction【電子書籍】[ Joshua Rhoades ]
|

In a world full of distractions and pressures to conform, standing firm in our faith can seem difficult, if not impossible. We face daily challenges that test our beliefs, tempt us to compromise, and pull us away from the values we know to be true. The story of Daniel, found in the Bible, offers a powerful example of what it means to have a heart of conviction. In Daniel 1:8, it says, "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank." This verse tells us that Daniel made a clear and firm decision in his heart to stay faithful to God, even when he was surrounded by temptation and pressure to do otherwise.

Daniel's choice wasn't easy. He was a young man in a foreign land, living under the rule of a powerful king who expected him to conform to the ways of Babylon. Yet Daniel resolved not to defile himself by eating food that was against God's commandments. This decision could have cost him his place in the king's court or even his life, but Daniel chose to remain true to his faith. His courage, determination, and unwavering commitment to God set him apart as a man of conviction.

"A Heart of Conviction" is inspired by Daniel's life and his bold decision to stand firm in his faith, no matter the cost. This book will challenge you to examine your own faith and consider whether you, like Daniel, are willing to purpose in your heart to stay faithful to God, even when the world pressures you to compromise. In today's culture, where we are constantly tempted to fit in, follow the crowd, or choose the easier path, we need the same heart of conviction that Daniel had.

This book is a call to live with unwavering faith, to make decisions based on God's truth, and to trust that God will honor our commitment to Him, just as He did with Daniel. It's about standing firm in the face of temptation, pressures, and challenges, knowing that a life of conviction brings glory to God and strength to our souls. "A Heart of Conviction" will encourage you to live boldly for God, to trust in His guidance, and to embrace a faith that is unshakable, no matter the circumstances.

The Trial and Conviction of That Infamous Hypocrite John Church【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]
|

In "The Trial and Conviction of That Infamous Hypocrite John Church," the anonymous author crafts a piercing narrative that weaves together elements of satire and social commentary. Set against the backdrop of societal hypocrisy, the text presents a fictional trial that critiques moral duplicity in both the personal and public spheres. The author's dissection of Church's character serves as an allegory for the larger societal structures that enable such hypocrisy to flourish, employing a sharp, pointed prose style that is characteristic of 18th-century moral literature. The book challenges readers to reflect on the moral fabric of their own society while engaging with a vivid cast of characters that embody the springing contradictions of their era. The identity of the author remains shrouded in anonymity, adding an intriguing layer to the work's critique of social norms. This choice may reveal the author's desire to distance themselves from personal retribution while simultaneously spotlighting the dualities prevalent within contemporary society. Such an approach reflects a broader literary movement of the time, where anonymity allowed for candidness in critique during periods of rigid social scrutiny. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersections of morality, literature, and society. It serves as a profound reminder of the perils of hypocrisy and the timeless nature of ethical dilemmas, making it a relevant read for modern audiences who seek to grapple with similar themes today.

The Margins of Discretion in Transnational Administrative Acts Expulsion Decisions and Entry Bans Following a Criminal Conviction【電子書籍】[ Kathrin Hamenst?dt ]
|

This book analyses the expulsion of delinquent foreigners and their exclusion from the territory through a comparative lens.

The book begins with a vertical perspective, focusing on the effects of European standards on the law of expulsion and entry bans in Germany and the Netherlands, and the law regulating deportation from the United Kingdom. It explores how these countries use their margin of discretion, granted by European law, to solve the societal, political and legal challenges that are posed by delinquent foreigners. Moreover, it highlights the similarities, convergences and differences between these countries' approaches to the topic.

Subsequently, the book adopts a horizontal perspective by focusing on the effects of national decisions on other states, thereby addressing transnational administrative acts. National expulsion decisions and entry bans can be given effect throughout European countries, with the consequence that other states are in principle obliged to enforce them by refusing foreigners access to their territory. This obligation arises despite the fact that expulsion decisions and entry bans are adopted on the basis of diverging national provisions. Even though the margin of discretion of national decision makers has already been limited, the remaining differences call for further recommendations, which are put forward in this book.

Apprehensions & Convictions Adventures of a 50-Year-Old Rookie Cop【電子書籍】[ Mark Johnson ]
|

What makes a fifty-year-old man quit a highly successful career in charity work to take on the low-paid, dangerous job of being a police officer? When Mark Johnson left the United Way to become the oldest rookie in the Mobile, Alabama, police department, he didn’t just have to adjust to a new careerーhe had to adjust to an entirely new life of danger, violence, and stark moral choices. “Apprehensions and Convictions” is Johnson’s explosive memoir of his second career as a cop. Going from fund-raising with socialites to confronting armed suspects in the streets, Johnson found that poverty and crime were no longer social issues but matters of life and death. A civilized man whose first instinct is to help people in trouble, Johnson learned that some men can only be subdued with brute force and some chronic criminals refuse to be redeemed. Defying the skepticism of his wife, the derision of the younger cops who called him “Pawpaw,” and his own self-doubts, Johnson rose to become a detective and a highly decorated officer. “Apprehensions and Convictions” also tells a personal story of how Johnson overcame his own demons to find a new sense of purpose and identity in midlife. From a troubled drink- and drug-fueled youth, to dealing with both his birth and adoptive parents, to struggling to find a steady career path, Johnson’s story is of a man who found his courage and changed himself. An intense, sweeping narrative that explores the frustrations of an overprivileged youth, delves deeply into the dysfunction of the Mobile ghetto, and ends with an armed standoff between Johnson and an escaped cop-killer, “Apprehensions and Convictions” is a compelling new memoir of a remarkable life.

What Lincoln Believed The Values and Convictions of America's Greatest President【電子書籍】[ Michael Lind ]
|

Countless books have been written about Abraham Lincoln, yet few historians and biographers have taken Lincoln seriously as a thinker or attempted to place him in the context of major intellectual traditions. In this refreshing, brilliantly argued portrait, Michael Lind examines the ideas and beliefs that guided Lincoln as a statesman and shaped the United States in its time of great crisis. In a century in which revolutions against monarchy and dictatorship in Europe and Latin America had failed, Lincoln believed that liberal democracy must be defended for the good of the world. During an age in which many argued that only whites were capable of republican government, Lincoln insisted on the universality of human rights and the potential for democracy everywhere. Yet he also held many of the prejudices of his time; his opposition to slavery was rooted in his allegiance to the ideals of the American Revolution, not support for racial equality. Challenging popular myths and capturing Lincoln’s strengths and flaws, Lind offers fascinating and revelatory insights that deepen our understanding of this great and complicated man.

Power of a Promise A Depiction of Courage and Conviction【電子書籍】[ Tina Tate ]

Something’s wrong in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Not the kind of wrong you can see. Not the kind you can name. It lingers in the airーunspoken, unnoticed, but felt, like something watching just beyond the light. People vanish. No bodies. No witnesses. No answers. Four undercover agents arrive near a quiet rural town. The silence isn’t natural. It feels rehearsed. The locals are … different. They all seem to follow someoneーsomeone no one names, but never forgets. He charms. He persuades. He entices. And what he offers comes at a price no soul should ever pay. This isn’t just a case. It’s a reckoning. As the agents dig deeper, they realize they’re not just chasing a killer. They’re confronting something far darker and more seductive. A force that’s already claimed the town’s heartーand is reaching for theirs. To stop him, they’ll need more than evidence. More than courage. They’ll need faith. Because only one promise, spoken in truth and sealed in sacrifice, can shatter his hold on the soul. And if they fail, the town won’t be the only thing lost.

Appointment With Death The injustice of wrongful convictions【電子書籍】[ L.M. WASYLCIW ]

|

APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH - The injustice of wrongful convictions. Rob Carson’s life had been turned upside down; his pregnant wife, Janey, was dead and he was imprisoned for her murder. From the day of the bludgeoning, Rob maintained his innocence but statistics put a target on his back. The data was all too clear, husbands kill wives. Kara, Rob’s childhood sweetheart, was in disbelief. The whole of it was inconceivable. Rob was not capable of such a heinous, brutal act. He was not a killer.

Kara threw herself into the fight for justice, determined he had been railroaded; even the transcripts reflected little more than circumstantial evidence. Where was the justice? Kara knew she was treading on thin ice. When it was just the two of them it was all too easy to forget how Rob had dumped her for Janey. The girl who always loved Rob was laying her heart on the line, again. Very quickly Kara was ready to dive into a relationship with Rob even though he was behind bars.

In this gripping psychological thriller, Kara fights to clear Rob's name, while her friends whisper behind her back, accusing her of having hybristophilia - a fascination with criminals. But Kara didn't care. Her feelings for Rob were real. They were meant to be together. Her love for him was not a weird fascination for ‘the bad’, as some of her friends claimed. It was love, pure and simple, that grew from childhood swings. Kara was determined to do whatever it took to get Rob out of prison. The police could then search for Janey's real killer.

This book explores two things:

the justice system and how people can be wrongly convicted.
the psychological factors that compel a person to become infatuated by and devoted to what society considers a monster; be it for fame, love, importance, or obsession. Women with hybristophilia will do almost anything to get close to the prisoner they are attracted to.

If you enjoy books like ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘The Girl on the Train’, then you will become completely immersed in this gripping psychological thriller.

Good Kids, Bad City A Story of Race and Wrongful Conviction in America【電子書籍】[ Kyle Swenson ]
|

From award-winning investigative journalist Kyle Swenson, Good Kids, Bad City is the true story of the longest wrongful imprisonment in the United States to end in exoneration, and a critical social and political history of Cleveland, the city that convicted them.
In the early 1970s, three African-American menーWiley Bridgeman, Kwame Ajamu, and Rickey Jacksonーwere accused and convicted of the brutal robbery and murder of a man outside of a convenience store in Cleveland, Ohio. The prosecution's case, which resulted in a combined 106 years in prison for the three men, rested on the more-than-questionable testimony of a pre-teen, Ed Vernon.
The actual murderer was never found. Almost four decades later, Vernon recanted his testimony, and Wiley, Kwame, and Rickey were released. But while their exoneration may have ended one of American history's most disgraceful miscarriages of justice, the corruption and decay of the city responsible for their imprisonment remain on trial.
Interweaving the dramatic details of the case with Cleveland's historyーone that, to this day, is fraught with systemic discrimination and racial tensionーSwenson reveals how this outrage occurred and why. Good Kids, Bad City is a work of astonishing empathy and insight: an immersive exploration of race in America, the struggling Midwest, and how lost lives can be recovered.

In Roe v. Wade, perhaps the most controversial United States Supreme Court decision, Norma McCorvey fought for and won the right to secure an abortion. Though she never had an abortion, under the pseudonym "Jane Roe," Norma reluctantly became the poster child for the pro-choice movement.

Over the next two decades, Norma experienced the grief and despair of millions of women who chose to abort their babies; she witnessed the destruction of thousands of human lives in abortion clinics where she worked; and the "champion" of the pro-choice movement was soon being crushed by the weight of so much pain, so much death, and so many ill-considered "choices."

Finally, she began to break. She found out that the real choice she had been burdened with was not about abortion but about eternal life. It was a choice that would shock the world and change Norma's life forever.
