An “extraordinary” (Laurie Halse Anderson) young poet traces the lives of her foremothers in West Tennessee, from those enslaved centuries ago to her grandmother, her mother, and finally herself, in this stunning debut celebrating Black girlhood and womanhood throughout American history.

“A masterpiece that beautifully captures the heartbreak that accompanies coming of age for Black girls becoming Black women.”ーEvette Dionne, author of Lifting as We Climb, longlisted for the National Book Award

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Ms. Magazine, Kirkus Reviews

Walking Gentry Home tells the story of Alora Young’s ancestors, from the unnamed women forgotten by the historical record but brought to life through Young’s imagination; to Amy, the first of Young’s foremothers to arrive in Tennessee, buried in an unmarked grave, unlike the white man who enslaved her and fathered her child; through Young’s great-grandmother Gentry, unhappily married at fourteen; to her own mother, the teenage beauty queen rejected by her white neighbors; down to Young in the present day as she leaves childhood behind and becomes a young woman.

The lives of these girls and women come together to form a unique American epic in verse, one that speaks of generational curses, coming of age, homes and small towns, fleeting loves and lasting consequences, and the brutal and ever-present legacy of slavery in our nation’s psyche. Each poem is a story in verse, and together they form a heart-wrenching and inspiring family saga of girls and women connected through blood and history.

Informed by archival research, the last will and testament of an enslaver, formal interviews, family lore, and even a DNA test, Walking Gentry Home gives voice to those too often muted in America: Black girls and women.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 998円

Walking Guide to the V?a de la Plata and the Camino Sanabr?s【電子書籍】[ Gerald Kelly ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

2024 edition now available - fully updated when walking the V?a de la Plata in spring 2023.

This edition includes:

- Updated maps - Notes on the towns and villages you'll pass through and a diagram show distances
- Route descriptions and distances
- Altitude profiles
- Pilgrim accommodation
- Services: shops, caf?s, restaurants, banks, etc.
- Notes on some of the important historical sites you can visit

The V?a de la Plata was originally a Roman Road linking Asturias in the north of Spain with the port of Cadiz in the south. Its name, which means The Silver Route, dates from Roman times when it was used to transport silver from the mines of Asturias to the Mediterranean port of Cadiz and onward by ship to Rome. Beginning in the 9th century, as Santiago de Compostela was becoming known as a Christian pilgrimage site, it also began to be used by pilgrims travelling to and from the tomb of St James the Apostle.

In the 1980s the revival of the Camino Franc?s as a walking route renewed interested in the V?a de la Plata. Numbers of pilgrims increased slowly over the years peaking at 14,197 in Holy Year 2010, and since then constant at about 9,000 a year. In contrast to the Camino Franc?s, the busiest times on the V?a de la Plata are spring and autumn. The extreme summer heat in southern Spain makes June, July and August the preserve of a small number of hardy souls.

Today the V?a de la Plata has become a popular alternative to the Camino Franc?s for people looking for solitude and a more authentic Camino experience (with its accompanying difficulties). This guide covers the Camino from Seville to Granja de Moreruela, and the Camino Sanabr?s, which branches from the V?a de la Plata and arrives in Santiago through southern Galicia.

I started writing this guide after I came back from walking the V?a de la Plata from Seville to Santiago via Astorga in the winter of 2009, and finished the first edition after returning to walk the Camino Sanabr?s in 2012. Preparing for my walk I had been unable to find any reliable information in English about the routes and accommodation along them. This didn't deter me and I managed fine with a print out of accommodation from a Spanish website and some Google maps of the towns with the route sketched on them. However, if I hadn't known Spanish I would have been lost and I probably wouldn't have even attempted this walk.

Based on my experience I decided to try to make information more widely available in English. I started by making the guide available as a free download from my website. Thanks to the positive feedback and encouragement I received from other pilgrims who used it, I decided to try publishing it on Amazon (with the addition of maps). This has enabled me to bring the information to a far wider audience - not free, but for a fair price. From the beginning I appealed to pilgrims to send me updates and corrections to help me keep the information up-to-date. Many people responded, and this, together with online resources, allowed me to keep track of new hostels and route changes.

I set out to create a source of the essential information someone will need to walk the V?a de la Plata, and this book is still that, the essential information: distances, pilgrim hostels, places to buy food, places to eat, and notes about those few places where the yellow arrows may not be sufficient for you to find your way.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 591円

BIRTH OF HAIRLESS GORILLA ZODOKA

The First Hairless upright walking Gorilla on the Earth

It was night with full of moon light, the sounds of different species were heard in the jungle a small amount of rains continued to fall. A group of gorillas known as gorillas of Meru hid themselves under big trees so as to prevent them from rain they covered their heads with banana tree leaves ,one of them was pregnant and she started to feel abdominal pains, the pains occurred to her were the labour pains. She decided to run away with her husband up to the cave where the delivery of new baby occurred. Although it was night and the darkest in the cave but they felt that, their baby was very different from other Gorilla babies, her baby was having no hairs to its body except the head and its hind limbs looked very different from others because the fingers of its hind limbs were short and strong. They decided to hid their hairless baby so as to avoid from being killed by other gorillas because it was not normal to the gorillas of Meru to bear a child with no hairs they thought that gorilla species could believe that a baby like that was not belonged to them.

The father of hairless baby and its mother kept their child secretly ,they collected fruits, roots and leaves and went into the cave to feed its baby, after 3 years their baby continued to show many differences from them, their baby was moving upright only while gorillas walked by using the fore limbs and hind limbs, the mother of hairless gorilla was again pregnant, the second pregnancy was not belonged to that father of hairless gorilla. It was noon and the sky was having no clouds and the sun lights hit on earth directly, the gorillas of Meru rested together to the shadows of trees, the mother of hairless gorilla felt labour pains and did a delivery of new baby in front of all gorillas of Meru, she succeeded to bear a female baby but the gorillas of Meru wondered to see a baby with no hairs, a new baby looked the same in physical appearance features with her first born baby, a mother of hairless baby held her new baby strongly. The gorillas of Meru started making noise, jumping and pushing the mother of hairless gorillas, they wanted the mother of hairless gorillas to leave that new baby but she refused and started running to serve her new baby, the gorilla of meru chased her everywhere she went but the mother of hairless gorillas succeeded to run away from a group of gorillas of meru by hiding herself in shrub. When the gorillas of meru disappeared the mother of hairless gorillas moved out of the shrub and started going to the cave by walking and hide because the jungle was very huge and it was very dangerous to her because pythons and other dangerous animals were present in the jungle. She arrived in the cave when the sun set started. Her first born baby was very hungry because no food were brought to him since morning he started crying after his mother entered into the cave. The mother of hairless gorillas decided to leave her new baby with her firstborn baby in the cave and went out of the cave to find food. She entered into the jungle and collecting fruits and roots, after collecting food, she returned into the cave and gave her first-born food while her second born baby was given milk from her by sucking her breasts.

After her first born baby finished to eat, she took him with her new baby and went with them outside the cave, it was too dark but she started moving away from the cave, her first born baby was carried on her back because he was walking very slow so the mother of hairless gorillas wanted to move faster, she moved away from gorillas of Meru territories so as to serve the lives of her babies, the mother of hairless gorillas walked the whole night escaping the jungle of gorillas of meru.Gorillas of Meru preferred to live around the mountains, the mother of hairless gorillas moved away from mountains although she was not happy because it was very dangerous for her and her babies to live them without their fellow species. It is easy to be attacked when an animal is alone than when animals are many. When a new day began during morning, the rains started falling the mother of hairless gorillas and her babies hid themselves in a near cave until the rains stopped falling. She continued walking and next day arrived in new forest that was looked like a big lift valley forest, she found a near cave and made a settlement inside that cave. The forest was full of animals such as Zebras, Giraffes, Antelopes, Buffalos, Rhinos, Elephants And dangerous animals were present such as Lions and Leopards.

DEVELOPMENT OF LANGUAGE BY ZODOKA

When her first born baby was 7 years old and her second baby was 4 years old, her babies developed a language which was different from the vocal communication produced by gorillas of meru. The health of the mother of hairless gorillas became weak she suffered from disease for long time her son made efforts to take care his mother, he was collecting food from the forest so as his mother and little sister may eat. His mother died by a disease, It was so sad to them because they remained without any relative. The dead body of their mother started to stink after few days, the cave was stinking too much, he decided to take the body of his mother and burry it down few metres from the cave. The son and daughter of mother of hairless gorillas communicated themselves by a developed language, one day a boy said to his little sister by using their language” my little sister do you see all these things that surround us?,” his little sister answered him “yes I see them” he continued talking “these things differs from each other therefore each thing should have its own name” his little sister said “it is true my brother the names are needed to each thing in this forest” they decided to give names many things which were found in the forest they named plants, animals, birds and anything they saw. Walking God's Tightrope【電子書籍】[ Victoria Lloyd ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

The spirit of God said to me, Close your eyes, and I did. Then He said, This is why men should always pray; now open your eyes. As I did, the person that had knocked me to the floor jumped back and shouted as loud as she could to her friend that was with her, Look at her! She is crazy! Man, she is crazy! She backed away from me to the door of the room and called the police on her own self. Life can be like a tennis game; it serves you up all kind of unexpected moves. You have to know how to return your play to be a winner. Jesus made it clear, His favor and loving-kindness and mercy are enough for you through any danger. My strength and power will pitch a tent over and dwell upon you.[1 Corinthians 12:9] while walking Gods tightrope to victory in this world.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,144円

This specially-priced set collects six novels from The Ursian Chronicles.

BAYNE'S CLIMB: Book I of The Sword of Bayne

Bayne kul Kanon pursues a dark wizard across a decade and eventually up a mountain path, and when the path runs out, up the side of the mountain itself.

Why does Bayne seek this wizard? Because Bayne is a warrior without a past. Ten years earlier he woke amid battle with no memories, his only ally the wizard. His enemies, numberless.

Once the wizard fled, Bayne set out on foot after him. Now they have come to the mountain, and Bayne is determined to climb and to find the truth.

Along the way up the mountain, the warrior finds many new enemies, dangers and oddities. All hamper his quest to find the wizard, and all must be overcome.

Yet in the end, will Bayne truly want to know the truth?

A THOUSAND WOUNDS: Book II of The Sword of Bayne

Bayne kul Kanon has passed the mountain, but now the wandering warrior finds another world opening before him. Odd lands, odd people and the oddest of rules and beliefs confront him.

It is a world seemingly run by a madman, yet it might hold truths about the secrets of Bayne's past, present and possibly even his future.

UNDER THE MOUNTAIN: Book III of The Sword of Bayne

Bayne kul Kanon has climbed the mountain and traveled to another world. He has learned the secrets of his past, and he has suffered for gaining such knowledge.

He has been broken, the scars of a thousand wounds layering every inch of his body. But he wanders on, enraged.

Returning to the world of Ursia, he forges ahead on another quest, a search for an old friend, a priest of the god Ashal.

Yet Bayne now believes himself to be a god, a god of war, and he will brook no foolishness from mere mortals.

None are safe who face the wandering warrior.

WHERE GATHER THE GODS: Book I of The Walking Gods Trilogy

A chance encounter with armored figures brings Itidal out of the desert. For thousands of years, perhaps longer, he has tromped across the pale sands, but now he is drawn to civilization in a world where civilization should not exist. To him, men are little more than savage beasts, occasionally gathering into small villages though little more.

Now Itidal learns of a city, and he strides forward to investigate. What he finds are buildings and bankers, soldiers and slaves, peasants and priests. It is all young, only centuries old, new to mankind, but it is indeed civilization, a civilization with a jealous god.

The high priest himself is curious and always questing for power. These yearnings cannot go unchallenged forever, however, and soon enough another god makes his presence known, a hungry god with unfathomable appetites.

Between these gods and the high priest is where Itidal finds himself.

A PLACE CALLED SKULL: Book II of The Walking Gods Trilogy

A wizard walks into the desert, a weapon of magic in his hands. The gods themselves begin to gather. The stakes might very well be the very existence of humankind.

To one place do all travel, the desert ruins known as Skull thousands upon thousands of years in the forgotten past.

Within those ruins lie secrets and answers. Perhaps more importantly and more deadly, also there lies the remains of the ancient Zarroc, a race that existed before men, a race which enslaved mankind and created the gods themselves.

But some gods are already there and waiting, scheming and railing.

WHOM THE GODS SLAY: Book III of The Walking Gods Trilogy
The time for the gathering of the gods has arrived. Some will fall beforehand, others will bring powerful weapons, but none will be the same after they meet again, this time at the Well of Souls.

Two mortals join them this time, a wizard who has slain thousands to gain power and a simple soldier from the future. Both will have roles to play. Both will be transformed. Both will change the fate of humankind.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,591円

The Hidden Lives of London Streets A Walking Guide to Soho, Holborn and Beyond【電子書籍】[ James Morton ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

London's streets have always worn a variety of influences, reflecting the diverse crowds who live and work on them. Take a walk down any number of historic streets and an abundance of tales exist in the bricks and mortar, waiting to be told.

The Hidden Lives of London's Streets takes the reader on a journey through Soho, Piccadilly, Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Kensington, Fitzrovia and Clerkenwell. A street map is provided for each area, marking out the streets and buildings in which the various activities - some forgotten, others well-remembered - took place.

Stories include those of courtesans such as the notorious Lola Montez and Theresa de Cornelys, who gave lavish balls at their home in Soho Square which were little more than orgies, during which a man playing the violin while on roller skates crashed through her plate glass window; Casanova and his quarrel with Marianne Charpillon after he taught a parrot to say she was a 'whore'; clubs - great (the Gargoyle), the artistic (Muriel Belcher's Colony), and the small (Royston Smith's club for dwarves); the police; robberies; murder and executions; the nightclubs; cinemas and theatres; the villains and prostitution. Beyond mere gangs and criminality, the book will trace the social changes that have gradually unfolded on any given street. For example the metamorphosis of Old Compton Street as home to race gangs in the 1920s, to becoming an essentially Italian street, to being part of the gay community.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,388円

Revised and Updated in September 2020!

Secret Walks: A Walking Guide to the Hidden Trails of Los Angeles is a sequel to the popular Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles, and features another collection of exciting urban walks through parks, canyons, and neighborhoods unknown and unseen by most Angelinos. Each walk is rated for duration, distance, and difficulty, and is accompanied by a map.

The walks, like those in Secret Stairs, are filled with fascinating factoids about historical landmarks-the original Bat Cave from Batman, the lake where Opie learned to fish on The Andy Griffith Show, or the storage barn for one of L.A.’s oldest wineries. The book also highlights the people who made the landmarks famous: the infamous water engineer William Mulholland; the convicted murderer and philanthropist Colonel Griffith J. Griffith; Charles Lummis, who walked from Cincinnati to Los Angeles to take a job on the L.A. Times; and tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney, who dug canals to drain the marshes south of Santa Monica and create his American Venice.”

Written in the entertainingly informed style that has made Secret Stairs a Los Angeles Times best-seller, Secret Walks is the perfect book for the walker eager to explore but tired of the crowds at Runyon Canyon or Temescal Park.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,282円
