White Slavery in the Barbary States Enriched edition. Unveiling the Forgotten Stories of Barbary State Captives【電子書籍】[ Charles Sumner ]

In "White Slavery in the Barbary States," Charles Sumner provides a compelling exploration of the historical practice of slavery perpetrated by North African pirates known as the Barbary corsairs. Sumner employs a meticulous investigative approach, interweaving a richly detailed narrative with statistical evidence and firsthand accounts, highlighting the plight of American sailors captured in the early 19th century. Written during a period of increasing concern over American maritime security and the moral implications of slavery, the book serves as both a historical account and a critique of contemporary attitudes toward freedom and exploitation. Charles Sumner, an eminent American statesman and abolitionist, was deeply influenced by the socio-political climate of his time, particularly the fight against slavery both domestically and abroad. His background in law and his fervent advocacy for civil rights informed his perspective in addressing international slavery. Sumner's commitment to justice and equality drove him to uncover the brutal realities faced by captives, making his work a significant contribution to both abolitionist literature and American historiography. This seminal work is indispensable for anyone seeking to understand the interconnectedness of freedom, justice, and global humanity in the narrative of slavery. Sumner's historical analysis and moral imperatives invite readers to reflect on the past while engaging with ongoing dialogues about human rights and dignity today. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - A succinct Introduction situates the work's timeless appeal and themes. - The Synopsis outlines the central plot, highlighting key developments without spoiling critical twists. - A detailed Historical Context immerses you in the era's events and influences that shaped the writing. - A thorough Analysis dissects symbols, motifs, and character arcs to unearth underlying meanings. - Reflection questions prompt you to engage personally with the work's messages, connecting them to modern life. - Handーpicked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance. - Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.

White Screens/Black Images Hollywood From the Dark Side【電子書籍】[ James Snead ]

Hollywood's representation of blacks has been consistently misleading, promoting an artificially constructed mythology in place of historical fact. But how, James Snead asks, did black skin on screen develop into a complex code for various types of white supremacist discourse? In these essays, completed shortly before his death in 1989, James Snead offers a thoughtful inquiry into the intricate modes of racial coding in Hollywood cinema from 1915 to 1985. Snead presents three major methods through which the racist ideology within film functions: mythification, in which black images are correlated in a larger sceme of semiotic valuation where the dominant I needs the marginal other in order to function effectively; marking, in which the color black is repeatedly over-determined and redundantly marked, as if to force the viewer to register the image's difference from white; and omission--the repetition of black absence from positions of autonomy and importance. White Screens/Black Images offers an array of film texts, drawn from both classical Hollywood cinema and black independent film culture. Individual chapters analyze Birth of a Nation , King Kong , Shirley Temple in The Littlest Rebel and The Little Colonel , Mae West in I'm No Angel , Marlene Dietrich in Blonde Venus , Bette Davis in Jezebel , the racism of Disney's Song of the South , and Taxi Driver . Making skillful use of developments in both structuralist and post-structuralist film theory, Snead's work speaks not only to the centrality of race in Hollywood films, but to its centrality in the formation of modern American culture.

Black Women, Ivory Tower Revealing the Lies of White Supremacy in American Education【電子書籍】[ Jasmine L. Harris ]

A first-of-its-kind compelling exploration of what it means to be a Black woman in higher education.

Black women are heading to college in record numbers, and more and more Black women are teaching in higher education. But increasing numbers in college don't guarantee our safety there. Willpower and grit may improve achievement for Black people in school, but they don't secure our belonging. In fact, the very structure of higher education ensures that we're treated as guests, outsiders to the institutional family--outnumbered and unwelcome.

Dr. Jasmine Harris shares her own experiences attempting to be a Vassar girl and reckoning with a lack of legacy and agency. Moving beyond the "data points", Dr. Harris examines the day-to-day impacts on Black women as individuals, the longer-term consequences to our professional lives, and the generational costs to our entire families.

"I want to arm as many Black girls and women as I can with the knowledge about these spaces that I lacked," says Dr. Harris. "By laying bare my own traumas, and those of Black women before me, I am providing them the tools to protect themselves, with an understanding of how deliberately many institutions will try to undercut them."

Trial and error has been required of Black students to navigate systems of discrimination and disadvantage. But this book now offers useful support, illuminating the community of Black women dealing with similar issues. The author's story is not unusual, nor are her interactions anomalies. Black Women, Ivory Tower explores why.

Work in Black and White Striving for the American Dream【電子書籍】[ Enobong Hannah Branch ]

The ability to achieve economic security through hard work is a central tenet of the American Dream, but significant shifts in today’s economy have fractured this connection. While economic insecurity has always been a reality for some Americans, Black Americans have historically long experienced worse economic outcomes than Whites. In Work in Black and White, sociologists Enobong Hannah Branch and Caroline Hanley draw on interviews with 80 middle-aged Black and White Americans to explore how their attitudes and perceptions of success are influenced by the stories American culture has told about the American Dream ? and about who should have access to it and who should not.

Branch and Hanley find that Black and White workers draw on racially distinct histories to make sense of today’s rising economic insecurity. White Americans have grown increasingly pessimistic and feel that the American Dream is now out of reach, mourning the loss of a sense of economic security which they took for granted. But Black Americans tend to negotiate their present insecurity with more optimism, since they cannot mourn something they never had. All educated workers bemoaned the fact that their credentials no longer guarantee job security, but Black workers lamented the reality that even with an education, racial inequality continues to block access to good jobs for many.

The authors interject a provocative observation into the ongoing debate over opportunity, security, and the American Dream: Among policymakers and the public alike, Americans talk too much about education. The ways people navigate insecurity, inequality, and uncertainty rests on more than educational attainment. The authors call for a public policy that ensures dignity in working conditions and pay while accounting for the legacies of historical inequality.

Americans want the game of life to be fair. While the survey respondents expressed common ground on the ideal of meritocracy, opinions about to achieve economic security for all diverge along racial lines, with the recognition ? or not ? of differences in current and past access to opportunity in America.

Work in Black and White is a call to action for meaningful policies to make the premise of the American Dream a reality.

The Souls of White Jokes How Racist Humor Fuels White Supremacy【電子書籍】[ Ra?l P?rez ]

A rigorous study of the social meaning and consequences of racist humor, and a damning argument for when the joke is not just a joke.

Having a "good" sense of humor generally means being able to take a joke without getting offendedーlaughing even at a taboo thought or at another's expense. The insinuation is that laughter eases social tension and creates solidarity in an overly politicized social world. But do the stakes change when the jokes are racist? In The Souls of White Jokes Ra?l P?rez argues that we must genuinely confront this unsettling question in order to fully understand the persistence of anti-black racism and white supremacy in American society today.

W.E.B. Du Bois's prescient essay "The Souls of White Folk" was one of the first to theorize whiteness as a social and political construct based on a feeling of superiority over racialized othersーa kind of racial contempt. P?rez extends this theory to the study of humor, connecting theories of racial formation to parallel ideas about humor stemming from laughter at another's misfortune. Critically synthesizing scholarship on race, humor, and emotions, he uncovers a key function of humor as a tool for producing racial alienation, dehumanization, exclusion, and even violence. P?rez tracks this use of humor from blackface minstrelsy to contemporary contexts, including police culture, politics, and far-right extremists. Rather than being harmless fun, this humor plays a central role in reinforcing and mobilizing racist ideology and power under the guise of amusement.

The Souls of White Jokes exposes this malicious side of humor, while also revealing a new facet of racism today. Though it can be comforting to imagine racism as coming from racial hatred and anger, the terrifying reality is that it is tied up in seemingly benign, even joyful, everyday interactions as wellー and for racism to be eradicated we must face this truth.

Devil in the Basement: White Supremacy, Satanic Ritual, and My Family【電子書籍】[ Charlotte Laws ]

Devil in the Basement reveals the shocking truth about my family. I learned about the murders, bombings, and devil worship when I visited my ancestors' home town of Fairmont, West Virginia. As a former private eye, I investigated what had happened and even ventured into the eerie basement where the satanic rituals had occurred.

The story begins in 1928 when thousands of Ku Klux Klan members march through this sleepy town. My great uncle John's passions were ignited that day, as were those of my grandfather Tucker, who changed his Italian name to "sound white" with hopes of escaping poverty and racism, and of becoming a U.S. Senator. Meanwhile, my great-grandmother set up a criminal enterprise in the back barn, and my great aunt was hauled off to an insane asylum before becoming the mistress of a Detroit mobster.

But this story is not just about my family. It is also about their creepy neighbor, Ernie, who had a ghoulish life-sized doll. He abused his wives and dabbled in his favorite pastime: evil. He liked evil. He was creative when it came to evil. He was all about evil.

Devil in the Basement is a story of love and horror, racism and hope, Christian piety and satanic ritual. It is a book that shines a light on one of the most ghastly incidents in West Virginia history. White Supremacy through Black Eyes Human Dignity, Defacement, and the Grace of Racial Healing【電子書籍】[ Beverly Eileen Mitchell ]

The Black struggle for justice in the face of white supremacy has been a long-standing struggle for the acknowledgment of, and respect for, Black people's dignity as fully human beings made in the image of God. This book presents a theological exposition of human dignity, its defacement, the toxic ideology of racial superiority that erects such harsh impediments to racial reconciliation, and the conditions necessary before a new beginning for race relations might take shape.

What does it mean to have human dignity? What does it feel like, how does it shape one's self-perception, and how does it impact the lives of Black people when their dignity is not acknowledged and their humanity is denied? Mitchell's theological analysis of human dignity and defacement reveals the true nature of white supremacy from the perspective of those who must navigate the systems, structures, and institutions that operate in our highly racialized society.

In the face of such obstacles, Mitchell critiques the notion of "reconciliation," arguing that we cannot restore what has never existed. Rather, she offers the concept of a "new beginning," cautioning that such a step will only become possible once a different paradigm for relating across racial boundaries is in place. Throughout, Mitchell weaves personal experience with incisive theological analysis for a fresh--and challenging--take on America's original sin.

Do Aliens Speak Physics? And Other Questions about Science and the Nature of Reality【電子書籍】[ Daniel Whiteson ]

A hilarious, mind-bending investigation into how much humans and aliens might have in common, scientifically speakingーfrom a best-selling cartoonist and acclaimed physicist.

When the long-awaited day dawns and the aliens finally arrive on Earth, they might eat us and destroy the planetーor, just maybe, they might share the secrets of the Universe with us. When that time comes, will we be able to cross the communication barrier to beg for our lives? If the aliens do hold out those precious jewels of knowledge, will we even be able to grasp them?

It’s long been assumed, in both science fiction and real scientific efforts to communicate with hypothetical aliens, that math and physics could serve as a universal language connecting us with extraterrestrial minds. But as humanity draws ever closer to the possibility of an interplanetary future and expands its agelong search for alien life and intelligence, beloved author and physicist Daniel Whiteson and best-selling cartoonist Andy Warner wonder if we should be so sure. In Do Aliens Speak Physics?, they take readers on a wild adventure to the edges of space-time, science, and the imagination to investigate whether an alien?human mind meld could ever be achieved.

Deploying cutting-edge physics, deep philosophical insight, and plenty of cartoons, Whiteson and Warner explode what we thought we knew about talking to our cosmic neighborsーand even science itselfーby asking and answering questions both lighthearted and profound. Would aliens even need science to build the technology that brings them to Earth? Is it possible that they could experience the Universe very differently from usーtasting electrons and smelling photons? Would the extraterrestrials have to perceive “electrons” and “photons” at all, or are these particles only convenient concepts for our human minds? At bottom, does physics reveal fundamental truths about the Universe, as we so often believe, or might it in fact tell us more about ourselves?

As ultimately mind-altering as it is hilarious, Do Aliens Speak Physics? will leave you with a view of the Universeーand humanityーthat’s stranger and more marvelous than before.

The World in Flames A Black Boyhood in a White Supremacist Doomsday Cult【電子書籍】[ Jerald Walker ]

A lively memoir of growing up with blind African American parents in a segregated cult preaching the imminent end of the worldーfor fans of James McBride’s The Good Lord Bird.

It’s 1970, and Jerry Walker is six years old. His consciousness revolves around being a member of a church whose beliefs he finds not only confusing but terrifying. Composed of a hodgepodge of requirements and restrictionsーincluding a prohibition against doctors and hospitalsーthe underpinning tenet of Herbert W. Armstrong’s Worldwide Church of God was that its members were divinely chosen and all others would soon perish in rivers of flames.

The substantial membership was ruled by fear, intimidation, and threats. Anyone who dared leave the church would endure hardship for the remainder of this life and eternal suffering in the next. The next life, according to Armstrong, would arrive in 1975, three years after the start of the Great Tribulation. Jerry would be eleven years old.

Jerry’s parents were particularly vulnerable to the promise of relief from the world’s hardships. When they joined the church, in 1960, they were living in a two-room apartment in a dangerous Chicago housing project with the first four of their seven children, and, most significantly, they both were blind, having lost their sight to childhood accidents. They took comfort in the belief that they had been chosen for a special afterlife, even if it meant following a religion with a white supremacist ideology and dutifully sending tithes to Armstrong, whose church boasted more than 100,000 members and more than $80 million in annual revenues at its height.

When the prophecy of the 1972 Great Tribulation does not materialize, Jerry is considerably less disappointed than relieved. When the 1975 end-time prophecy also fails, he finally begins to question his faith and imagine the possibility of choosing a destiny of his own.

The Color of Sex Whiteness, Heterosexuality, and the Fictions of White Supremacy【電子書籍】[ Mason Stokes ]

In The Color of Sex Mason Stokes offers new ways of thinking about whiteness by exploring its surprisingly ambivalent partnership with heterosexuality. Stokes examines a wide range of white-supremacist American texts written and produced between 1852 and 1915ーliterary romances, dime novels, religious and scientific tracts, filmーand exposes whiteness as a tangled network of racial and sexual desire. Stokes locates these white-supremacist texts amid the anti-racist efforts of African American writers and activists, deepening our understanding of both American and African American literary and cultural history.
The Color of Sex reveals what happens when race and sexuality meet, when white desire encounters its own ambivalence. As Stokes argues, whiteness and heterosexuality exist in anxious relation to one another. Mutually invested in “the normal,” they support each other in their desperate insistence on the cultural logic of exclusion. At the same time, however, they threaten one another in their attempt to create and sustain a white future, since reproducing whiteness necessarily involves the risk of contamination
Charting the curious movements of this “white heterosexuality,” The Color of Sex inaugurates a new moment in our ongoing attempt to understand the frenzied interplay of race and sexuality in America. As such, it will appeal to scholars interested in race theory, sexuality studies, and American history, culture, and literature.

"If You Can't Be Better Than an N-Word, Then Who Can You Be Better Than?" The Perpetuation of White Supremacy in Apartheid America【電子書籍】[ Thomas Sass ]

Americas elites utilize the divide-and-conquer strategy, and with African Americans, they have found their first target. Centuries of brainwashing have instilled a superiority high in many whites and at the same time placed blacks in less-than positions. I intend to show to what extent Apartheidism and the less-than culture affect blacks in several different environments, such as how the criminal justice system is used to marginalize and criminalize blacks at rates disproportionate to their population. Even the sports world can be more problematic for blacks than for non-blacks. I will present people and events that will show the double standards society has been led to not only accept but to expect, and just how easily we seem to have been manipulated. Most, and perhaps none of which could have been so relatively easily accomplished if the drug of superiority did not cloud our perceptions.
