Cunard-White Star Liners of the 1930s【電子書籍】[ William H. Miller ]
|

The early 1930s could not have been worse for shipping. With the coming of the Depression, the North Atlantic had grown very short of its most precious commodity: passengers. Ships began to sail half-full, and sometimes even emptier, and future prospects were bleak. Both Cunard and its nearest rival, the White Star Line, were hard hit, with too many ships against far too few occupied passenger berths. Called upon to assist, the British government authorised a loan of 〓9.5 million, on condition that Cunard and White Star merge. Cunard-White Star Line formed on 1 January 1934 and lasted until 1949. Cunard’s fifteen liners were joined by a further ten from White Star and these twenty-five ships included such legendary names as the Mauretania, Aquitania, Olympic, Majestic, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. In this book, William H. Miller offers a nostalgic review of the ships of the Cunard-White Star Line in Cunard’s 175th anniversary year.

Black Soundscapes White Stages The Meaning of Francophone Sound in the Black Atlantic【電子書籍】[ Edwin C. Hill Jr. ]
|

An innovative look at the dynamic role of sound in the culture of the African Diaspora as found in poetry, film, travel narratives, and popular music.

Black Soundscapes White Stages explores the role of sound in understanding the African Diaspora on both sides of the Atlantic, from the City of Light to the islands of the French Antilles. From the writings of European travelers in the seventeenth century to short-wave radio transmissions in the early twentieth century, Edwin C. Hill Jr. uses music, folk song, film, and poetry to listen for the tragic cri n?gre.

Building a conceptualization of black Atlantic sound inspired by Frantz Fanon's pioneering work on colonial speech and desire, Hill contends that sound constitutes a terrain of contestation, both violent and pleasurable, where colonial and anti-colonial ideas about race and gender are critically imagined, inscribed, explored, and resisted. In the process, this book explores the dreams and realizations of black diasporic mobility and separation as represented by some of its most powerful soundtexts and cultural practitioners, and it poses questions about their legacies for us today.

In the process, thee dreams and realities of Black Atlantic mobility and separation as represented by some of its most powerful soundtexts and cultural practitioners, such as the poetry of L?on-Gontran Damasーa founder of the N?gritude movementーand Josephine Baker’s performance in the 1935 film Princesse Tam Tam. As the first in Johns Hopkins’s new series on the African Diaspora, this book offers new insight into the legacies of these exceptional artists and their global influence.

The White Stocking【電子書籍】[ D H Lawrence ]

In this beautifully observed study of a new marriage and the sexual tensions that run through it, Lawrence returns to his theme that happiness in marriage can only come with the submission of the woman to the man. The young wife strains against the bonds of being married and dallies with another man but returns to the arms of her husband once he shows his true feelings for her. The modern reader will not care for the husband's brutality but can sympathise with the torment his wife's behaviour has caused him.

Some secrets are too dark to ever be brought into the light.

At least mine are.

My name is Orson Winters, and you already know too much for me to let you walk away.

A decade has passed since my parents were killed, forcing my younger siblings and me to move in with our estranged uncle. Whitestone Manor in all its grandeur was overwhelming enough. Then, we learned the family secret.

There’s darkness in the world no one, besides a handful of fighting families, even knows exists. The Winters family is the most acclaimed of them all. However, power isn’t always pleasurable, especially considering that it’s my responsibility to keep my reckless brothers and sister from jeopardizing us all.

When an old enemy emerges from the shadows, Uncle Sebastian calls in another fighting family to assist. I didn’t need their help. I could independently protect my siblings and the rest of the world from danger. That was, until I met Lilith Shaw. Tropical Whites The Rise of the Tourist South in the Americas【電子書籍】[ Catherine Cocks ]
|

As late as 1900, most whites regarded the tropics as "the white man's grave," a realm of steamy fertility, moral dissolution, and disease. So how did the tropical beach resortーwhite sand, blue waters, and towering palmsーbecome the iconic vacation landscape? Tropical Whites explores the dramatic shift in attitudes toward and popularization of the tropical tourist "Southland" in the Americas: Florida, Southern California, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Catherine Cocks examines the history and development of tropical tourism from the late nineteenth century through the early 1940s, when the tropics constituted ideal winter resorts for vacationers from the temperate zones. Combining history, geography, and anthropology, this provocative book explains not only the transformation of widely held ideas about the relationship between the environment and human bodies but also how this shift in thinking underscored emerging concepts of modern identity and popular attitudes toward race, sexuality, nature, and their interconnections.

Cocks argues that tourism, far from simply perverting pristine local cultures and selling superficial misunderstandings of them, served as one of the central means of popularizing the anthropological understanding of culture, new at the time. Together with the rise of germ theory, the emergence of the tropical horticulture industry, changes in passport laws, travel writing, and the circulation of promotional materials, national governments and the tourist industry changed public perception of the tropics from a region of decay and degradation, filled with dangerous health risks, to one where the modern traveler could encounter exotic cultures and a rejuvenating environment.

The White Stone and Putois【電子書籍】[ Anatole France ]

A few Frenchmen, united in friendship, who were spending the spring in Rome, were wont to meet amid the ruins of the disinterred Forum. They were Jos?phin Leclerc, an Embassy Attach? on leave; M. Goubin, licenci? ?s lettres, an annotator; Nicole Langelier, of the old Parisian family of the Langeliers, printers and classical scholars; Jean Boilly, a civil engineer, and Hippolyte Dufresne, a man of leisure, and a lover of the fine arts. Towards five o’clock of the afternoon of the first day of May, they wended their way, as was their custom, through the northern door, closed to the public, where Commendatore Boni, who superintended the excavations, welcomed them with quiet amenity, and led them to the threshold of his house of wood nestling in the shadow of laurel bushes, privet hedges and cytisus, and rising above the vast trench, dug down to the depth of the ancient Forum, in the cattle market of pontifical Rome. Here, they pause awhile, and look about them. Facing them rise the truncated shafts of the Column? Honorari?, and where stood the Basilica of Julia, the eye rested on what bore the semblance of a huge draughts-board and its draughts. Further south, the three columns of the Temple of the Dioscuri cleave the azure of the skies with their blue-tinted volutes. On their right, surmounting the dilapidated Arch of Septimus Severus, the tall columns of the Temple of Saturn, the dwellings of Christian Rome, and the Women’s Hospital display in tiers, their facings yellower and muddier than the waters of the Tiber. To their left stands the Palatine flanked by huge red arches and crowned with evergreen oaks. At their feet, from hill to hill, among the flagstones of the Via Sacra, narrow as a village street, spring from the earth an agglomeration of brick walls and marble foundations, the remains of buildings which dotted the Forum in the days of Rome’s strength. Trefoil, oats, and the grasses of the field which the wind has sown on their lowered tops, have covered them with a rustic roof illumined by the crimson poppies. A mass of d?bris, of crumbling entablatures, a multitude of pillars and altars, an entanglement of steps and enclosing walls: all this indeed not stunted but of a serried vastness and within limits.

|

In Brumby the Wild White Stallion, Mary E. Patchett delivers a heartfelt and thrilling tale set in the untamed Australian bush, where a legendary wild stallion captures the imagination and spirit of all who see him. The brumbyーAustralia's wild horseーembodies freedom, survival, and the raw beauty of the outback, and Patchett's white stallion becomes both a symbol of nature's power and a character of almost mythical stature. As the story unfolds, readers follow both human and animal perspectives: the boy who dreams of taming the stallion, the stockmen who seek to capture or destroy him, and the stallion himself, whose instincts and intelligence help him evade every attempt to bring him in. Patchett combines lyrical prose with vivid descriptions of the land, expertly drawing on the traditions of animal fiction while grounding her story in authentic Australian experience. Themes of freedom, loyalty, and the human-animal bond run deep throughout the narrative, making it a timeless story for readers of all ages. The Ismay Line The Titanic, the White Star Line and the Ismay family【電子書籍】[ Wilton J. Oldham ]
|

The Ismay Line charts the rise and fall of one of the most eminent British shipping companies - and tells the story of the family behind it. The founder of the White Star Line, T H Ismay, pioneered a revolutionary design of iron steamships, built for him by Harland & Wolff of Belfast. By the time of his death in 1899 he had become the most successful steamship owner in the world. He was succeeded by his son, Bruce Ismay, who in April 1912 was aboard his latest ship, Titanic, when it collided with an iceberg on its maiden voyage. Ismay survived by boarding the last lifeboat to leave the starboard side of the sinking liner: and thus began one of the greatest witch-hunts of modern times. The Ismay Line draws on many previously unpublished family diaries and correspondence and offers a robust defence of Bruce Ismay’s conduct. Originally published in 1961, the book has been out of print for many years and is now a sought-after collector’s item.

In the past few years, Detroit siblings Jack and Meg White have in conjunction with a stream of similar-minded bands, revitalised rock music. Their sound is raw, stripped right back ? back to the primal fury and alienation of bluesmen like Son House and protopunks The Stooges and the MC5. In the Stripes’ hard knocks hometown of Detroit, an entire scene has emerged ? rudimentary, primordial garage rock championed by legendary names such as Mick ‘Dirtbombs’ Collins, Jack White’s own Third Man Records, Electric Six and producer Jim Diamond. Over in Brooklyn meanwhile, loft parties are all the rage ? illegal happenings put on in abandoned buildings, fuelled by vodka stills and loud music, featuring names such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars and Oneida. Writer Everett True has already covered much of this music in his own underground rock magazine Careless Talk Costs Lives. Now he goes public with his passion, delving deep into the lives of the personalities who make up the scenes ? the countless hours touring, the celebrity girlfriends, the parties, the power and the people.

Lynching Barack Obama How Whites Tried to String Up the President【電子書籍】[ Molefi Kete Asante ]
|

Molefi Kete Asante argues that the infamous historical acts of lynching Black men in the United States might be used to describe how many people of the White right wing have used various techniques to "string up" presidential objectives. Barack Obama, as the first Black president of the United States, met immediate resistance from a White majority that voted for his opponent in 2008. This was repeated in 2012. Asante contends that Whites felt that they had lost "their" country and the only way to act was to prevent Obama from asserting himself as a Black man. Asante shows in a compelling manner, by choosing many of the attacks on Obama found in the media, that the president was tied up, roped, and hung out to dry by the White Republican right. Nevertheless, as Asante explains, Obama championed some of the most progressive actions ever addressed by a president.
