Greatest Mystery Novels of Wilkie Collins (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Wilkie Collins ]
|

In "Greatest Mystery Novels of Wilkie Collins (Illustrated)," readers are transported into the intricate webs of suspense and intrigue that defined the Victorian mystery genre. Through masterfully crafted narratives, Collins harmonizes elements of gothic horror, psychological exploration, and incisive social commentary. His hallmark styleーmarked by meticulous plotting and rich, descriptive languageーinvites readers to unravel complex character dynamics while grappling with the moral ambiguities inherent in crime and justice. This illustrated edition enhances the experience, providing visual context to the atmospheric settings and characters that populate Collins's seminal works, such as "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone. Wilkie Collins, often regarded as one of the fathers of the detective novel, was deeply influenced by the societal challenges of his timeーVictorian England. A close contemporary of Charles Dickens, Collins's writing reflects the tensions surrounding class, gender roles, and the burgeoning field of forensic science. His innovative narrative techniques, including multiple viewpoints and unreliable narrators, serve to elevate the mystery genre, making it a precursor to modern detective fiction. This anthology is essential reading for fans of the mystery genre, as it not only showcases Collins's extraordinary talent but also situates his work within the broader context of 19th-century literature. Scholars and casual readers alike will appreciate the thematic depth and narrative innovation that Collins brought to his craft, making it a compelling complement to both literary studies and leisure reading.

The Two Destinies【電子書籍】[ Wilkie Collins ]
|

Surprisingly, not the true story about what happened to the other two after Beyonc? disbanded Destiny's Child to pursue a solo career, "The Two Destinies" is a manageable little number about George and Mary ? star-crossed lovers from different social classes. The setting is mid-19th Century England ? a convenient Collins favourite. But before you glance at your copy of Pride & Prejudice, groan about this novel being yet another installment of a tired old trope and unpause "Bootylicious", keep reading because there's more! Old fortune-telling crones, transatlantic voyages, fat inheritances, malicious scandals, starving children, attempted suicides, spectres and disabled people ? the story is a hotpot of explosive adjectives and colourful nouns. For the period at least. A classic story with many twists and turns, some even of the supernatural variety, "The Two Destinies" is a short and sweet exploration of kindred spirits vs. societal hierarchies ? short enough that it can be finished during one sitting of Titanic (1997). And you already know how that one ends. In fact, you've known since 1912.

The Moonstone Wilkie Collins - The Moonstone (1868) by Wilkie Collins is a 19th-century British epistolary novel. It is an early modern example of the detective novel, and established many of the ground rules of the modern genre. Told from the perspective of 11different characters, tale of mystery and suspicion was considered the first modern English detective novel at its time of publication. Centred around a glorious yellow diamond that carries with it a menacing history, The Moonstone tells the story of Rachel Verinder, who inherits the stone on her eighteenth birthday. That very evening, the diamond is stolen and there begins an epic enquiry into hunting down the thief. At the same time, three Indian men, Brahmin guardians of the diamond are attempting to reclaim the stone in order to return it to their sacred Hindu Idol.

*** Original and Unabridged Content. Made available by GOLDEN CLASSIC PRESS***

Synopsis:
Scion of a well-connected but impoverished family, Frank Softly may be the most audacious, outrageous, engaging, and thoroughly lovestruck young man in Regency London. By the age of 25, he's been in and out of doctoring, caricaturing, forging Old Masters, and counterfeiting half-crowns. Now a maliciously conceived will ties the loveable rascal's fortunes to those of his doddering grandmother and miserly brother-in-law. The ensuing scheme brings Frank up against a worthy adversary, the sinister Dr. Dulcifer, a conductor of secret experiments who also happens to be the father of a highly attractive young woman.
Ranging from the British Isles to Australia, Frank's picaresque adventures enable Wilkie Collins to take a good-natured poke at a host of ready targets, including pretentious art collectors, puritanical English society, and stuffy self-improvement groups. Written with a light touch and charming sense of humor, *A Rogue's Life* offers a delightful diversion.

The Dead Secret: A Novel【電子書籍】[ Wilkie Collins ]

*** Original and Unabridged Content. Made available by GOLDEN CLASSIC PRESS***

Synopsis:
Having previously tried my hand at short serial stories (collected and reprinted in After Dark, and The Queen of Hearts), I ventured on my first attempt, in this book, to produce a sustained work of fiction, intended for periodical publication during many successive weeks. The experiment proved successful both in this country and in America. Two of the characters which appear in these pages -- "Rosamond," and "Uncle Joseph" -- had the good fortune to find friends everywhere who took a hearty liking to them. A more elaborately drawn personage in the story -- "Sarah Leeson" -- was, I think, less generally understood. The idea of tracing, in this character, the influence of a heavy responsibility on a naturally timid woman, whose mind was neither strong enough to bear it, nor bold enough to drop it altogether, was a favorite idea with me, at the time, and is so much a favorite still, that I privately give "Sarah Leeson" the place of honor in the little portrait-gallery which my story contains. Perhaps, in saying this, I am only acknowledging, in other words, that the parents of literary families share the well-known inconsistencies of parents in general, and are sometimes unreasonably fond of the child who has always given them the most trouble.

The Moonstone (1868) by Wilkie Collins is a 19th-century British epistolary novel, generally considered the first full length detective novel in the English language. The story was originally serialised in Charles Dickens' magazine All the Year Round. The Moonstone and The Woman in White are widely considered Wilkie Collins' best novels. Besides creating many of the ground rules of the detective novel, The Moonstone also reflected Collins' enlightened social attitudes in his treatment of the servants in the novel. Collins adapted The Moonstone for the stage in 1877, but the production was performed for only two months.

This early work by Wilkie Collins was originally published in 1852. Born in Marylebone, London in 1824, Collins' family enrolled him at the Maida Hill Academy in 1835, but then took him to France and Italy with them between 1836 and 1838. Returning to England, Collins attended Cole's boarding school, and completed his education in 1841, after which he was apprenticed to the tea merchants Antrobus & Co. in the Strand. In 1846, Collins became a law student at Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the bar in 1851, although he never practiced. It was in 1848, a year after the death of his father, that he published his first book, The Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A., to good reviews. The 1860s saw Collins' creative high-point, and it was during this decade that he achieved fame and critical acclaim, with his four major novels, The Woman in White (1860), No Name (1862), Armadale (1866) and The Moonstone (1868). The Moonstone, meanwhile is seen by many as the first true detective novel - T. S. Eliot called it "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels...in a genre invented by Collins and not by Poe." Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. In 1859, the story caused a sensation with its readers, hooking their attention with the ghostly first scene where the mysterious ‘Woman in White’ Anne Catherick comes across Walter Hartright.
"The Woman in White" is a classic novel written by English author Wilkie Collins. It was first published as a serialized novel in 1859-1860 and later released in book form. Often considered one of the earliest mystery novels, "The Woman in White" is known for its intricate plot, suspenseful narrative, and complex characters.

The story begins with a mysterious encounter on a moonlit road in Hampstead, England, where a young drawing master named Walter Hartright encounters a distressed woman dressed all in white. This woman, who later reveals herself as Anne Catherick, has escaped from a nearby asylum and warns Walter about a dark secret involving Sir Percival Glyde, a baronet she once worked for as a governess.

As the narrative unfolds, Walter becomes entangled in the lives of Sir Percival, his beautiful but troubled wife Laura, and her half-sister Marian Halcombe. Together, they uncover a web of deceit, manipulation, and betrayal, with Anne Catherick's identity and the mystery of the woman in white at the center of it all.

"The Woman in White" is renowned for its atmospheric descriptions, intricate plotting, and its exploration of themes such as identity, class, and the oppression of women in Victorian society. It is considered one of Wilkie Collins' finest works and a seminal example of the sensation novel, a popular genre of Victorian fiction characterized by its emphasis on suspense, mystery, and sensationalism.
