Yeats ]

The Celtic Twilight Faerie and Folklore【電子書籍】[ W.B. Yeats ]

I have desired, like every artist, to create a little world out of the beautiful, pleasant, and significant things of this marred and clumsy world, and to show in a vision something of the face of Ireland to any of my own people who would look where I bid them. I have therefore written down accurately and candidly much that I have heard and seen, and, except by way of commentary, nothing that I have merely imagined. I have, however, been at no pains to separate my own beliefs from those of the peasantry, but have rather let my men and women, dhouls and f?ries, go their way unoffended or defended by any argument of mine. The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pull them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best.

The Celtic Twilight【電子書籍】[ William Butler Yeats ]

The Celtic Twilight
by W.B. Yeats

This short book of essays by Yeats is a must-read.

Rooted in myth, occult mysteries, and belief in magic, these stories are populated by a lively cast of sorcerers, fairies, ghosts, and nature spirits. The great Irish poet heard these enchanting, mystical tales from Irish peasants, and the stories' anthropologic significance is matched by their timeless entertainment value.

This etext corresponds to the second (1902) expanded edition of the Celtic Twilight. This is one of the best-known collections of Yeats' prose; in it he explores the longstanding connection between the people of Ireland and the inhabitants of the land of Fairy. Yeats, who had profound mystic and visionary beliefs, writes with conviction of the reality of Fairies, both in his own experience, and in the everyday life of the Irish. This relatively short work serves as a way for readers to discover Yeats' powerful wordcraft and get an overview of celtic Fairy lore.

In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry【電子書籍】[ William Butler Yeats ]

Dr. Corbett, Bishop of Oxford and Norwich, lamented long ago the departure of the English fairies. "In Queen Mary's time" he wroteー"When Tom came home from labour, Or Cis to milking rose, Then merrily, merrily went their tabor, And merrily went their toes." But now, in the times of James, they had all gone, for "they were of the old profession," and "their songs were Ave Maries." In Ireland they are still extant, giving gifts to the kindly, and plaguing the surly. "Have you ever seen a fairy or such like?" I asked an old man in County Sligo. "Amn't I annoyed with them," was the answer. "Do the fishermen along here know anything of the mermaids?" I asked a woman of a village in County Dublin. "Indeed, they don't like to see them at all," she answered, "for they always bring bad weather." "Here is a man who believes in ghosts," said a foreign sea-captain, pointing to a pilot of my acquaintance. "In every house over there," said the pilot, pointing to his native village of Rosses, "there are several." Certainly that now old and much respected dogmatist, the Spirit of the Age, has in no manner made his voice heard down there. In a little while, for he has gotten a consumptive appearance of late, he will be covered over decently in his grave, and another will grow, old and much respected, in his place, and never be heard of down there, and after him another and another and another. Indeed, it is a question whether any of these personages will ever be heard of outside the newspaper offices and lecture-rooms and drawing-rooms and eel-pie houses of the cities, or if the Spirit of the Age is at any time more than a froth. At any rate, whole troops of their like will not change the Celt much. Giraldus Cambrensis found the people of the western islands a trifle paganish. "How many gods are there?" asked a priest, a little while ago, of a man from the Island of Innistor. "There is one on Innistor; but this seems a big place," said the man, and the priest held up his hands in horror, as Giraldus had, just seven centuries before. Remember, I am not blaming the man; it is very much better to believe in a number of gods than in none at all, or to think there is only one, but that he is a little sentimental and impracticable, and not constructed for the nineteenth century. The Celt, and his cromlechs, and his pillar-stones, these will not change muchーindeed, it is doubtful if anybody at all changes at any time. In spite of hosts of deniers, and asserters, and wise-men, and professors, the majority still are averse to sitting down to dine thirteen at table, or being helped to salt, or walking under a ladder, or seeing a single magpie flirting his chequered tail. There are, of course, children of light who have set their faces against all this, though even a newspaper man, if you entice him into a cemetery at midnight, will believe in phantoms, for every one is a visionary, if you scratch him deep enough. But the Celt is a visionary without scratching. Yet, be it noticed, if you are a stranger, you will not readily get ghost and fairy legends, even in a western village. You must go adroitly to work, and make friends with the children, and the old men, with those who have not felt the pressure of mere daylight existence, and those with whom it is growing less, and will have altogether taken itself off one of these days. The old women are most learned, but will not so readily be got to talk, for the fairies are very secretive, and much resent being talked of; and are there not many stories of old women who were nearly pinched into their graves or numbed with fairy blasts? At sea, when the nets are out and the pipes are lit, then will some ancient hoarder of tales become loquacious, telling his histories to the tune of the creaking of the boats. Holy-eve night, too, is a great time, and in old days many tales were to be heard at wakes. But the priests have set faces against wakes

The Wind Among the Reeds【電子書籍】[ William Butler Yeats ]

The Wind Among the Reeds (1899) is a collection of poems and plays by W.B. Yeats. Containing many of the poet’s early important works, The Wind Among the Reeds provides a rich sampling of Yeats’ poems, illuminating his influence on the Celtic Twilight, a late-nineteenth century movement to revive the myths and traditions of Ancient Ireland, while charting his developing sense of the poet’s place in history and a changing world.

“The Song of Wandering Aengus” dramatizes aesthetic and romantic longing. The poem follows a man with “a fire…in [his] head” who peels “a hazel wand,” hooks it with a berry, and catches himself “a little silver trout.” Satisfied, he returns home to light a fire and cook himself a meal of fresh fish when, suddenly, the trout transforms into “a glimmering girl / With apple blossom in her hair.” Haunted by her beauty, Aengus wanders the “hollow lands and hilly lands” in search of the girl, leaving his home and forsaking the promise of hard-earned comfort for the hope and hunger of vision . “The Song of the Old Mother,” a deceptively simple lyric reminiscent of William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience, is a brief meditation on the life of an elderly domestic worker. Rising at dawn, she ensures that “the seed of the fire flicker and glow,” preparing the home for the day ahead while “the young lie long and dream in their bed” with no sense of the nature of work. The Wind Among the Reeds, Yeats’ third collection of poems, introduces some of the poet’s most enduring characters and personas, including Michael Robartes and Red Hanrahan, who dramatize for poet and reader the moods and minds which move a creative spirit.

This edition of W.B. Yeats’s The Wind Among the Reeds is a classic of Irish literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. The Secret Rose【電子書籍】[ William Butler Yeats ]

The Secret Rose (1897) is a collection of poems by W.B. Yeats. Written in response to demands that the poet write “a really national poem or romance,” The Secret Rose exhibits Yeats’ devotion to personal mythology and occult orders, and is a brilliant display of symbolism by one of Irish literature’s premier poets.

“To the Secret Rose” opens the collection. The poem, inspired by Yeats’ membership in the Rosicrucian Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, uses symbolism to evoke religion, myth, and history. The “Far off, most secret, and inviolate Rose” is an image of utopian longing, an ideal moment the poet awaits, envisions, and longs for. “The Crucifixion of the Outcast” is a parable in which a wandering bard is led by Christian brothers to his execution. As his cross is set in the earth, he offers a portion of his last meal to the beggars who have gathered to watch. When he is nailed to the cross, however, he finds that mercy without humility is a seed that cannot grow. In “The Curse of the Fires and of the Shadows,” Puritan soldiers storm an abbey and attack a group of friars. Before he dies, the abbot raises the cross upon the altar, and promises divine vengeance. Immediately afterward, the soldiers are told that two messengers have escaped on horseback to warn and gather the people for a counterattack. The Secret Rose explores themes of faith and persecution while illuminating the proximity of life and myth for a poet whose subject is the soul.

This edition of W.B. Yeats’s The Secret Rose is a classic of Irish literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
The author was a passionate romantic and admirer of pre-Christian Celtic antiquity, in which he saw the foundation of the spiritual rebirth of Ireland, riven by contradictions between the Catholic and Protestant faiths. Ireland's pagan past attracted Yeats also spontaneous closeness to the supernatural, elusive moments intuitive initiation to the harmony of nature. This charming legend, where the line between the Old Irish way of life and the magic world of goblins, fairies, elves sometimes is completely indiscernible - a real gift for those who like to be considered a form of prose poetry that permeates his breath all the earthly existence of human beings.
