The Fight for Greek Sicily Society, Politics, and Landscape【

The island of Sicily was a highly contested area throughout much of its history. Among the first to exert strong influence on its political, cultural, infrastructural, and demographic developments were the two major decentralized civilizations of the first millennium BCE: the Phoenicians and the Greeks. While trade and cultural exchange preceded their permanent presence, it was the colonizing movement that brought territorial competition and political power struggles on the island to a new level. The history of six centuries of colonization is replete with accounts of conflict and warfare that include cross-cultural confrontations, as well as interstate hostilities, domestic conflicts, and government violence.

This book is not concerned with realities from the battlefield or questions of military strategy and tactics, but rather offers a broad collection of archaeological case studies and historical essays that analyze how political competition, strategic considerations, and violent encounters substantially affected rural and urban environments, the island’s heterogeneous communities, and their social practices. These contributions, originating from a workshop in 2018, combine expertise from the fields of archaeology, ancient history, and philology. The focus on a specific time period and the limited geographic area of Greek Sicily allows for the thorough investigation and discussion of various forms of organized societal violence and their consequences on the developments in society and landscape.

Aeschylus' distinctive use of language blends archaic grandeur with stark realism, situating his works in the rich context of Greek tragedy, which grapples with the consequences of human actions against divine will. Healing Plants of Greek Myth The Origins of Western Medicine and Its Original Plant Remedies Derived from Greek Myth【電子書籍】[ Angela Paine ]

Greek myth is part of our background, the names of many of the gods and goddesses known to us all. Within the myths are numerous references to plants used by goddesses and gods to heal or enchant, and the names of many of these plants have been incorporated into the Latin binomials that are used to identify them. By half a millennium BCE the physician god Asclepius entered into the mythology and temples were built to him called Asclepiaea, where the sick came to worship him and sleep with serpents in dormitories, hoping to experience miracle cures. At around the same time the first actual physicians began to practice within the Asclepiaea, using herbs, surgery and dietary advice. From these remote beginnings Greek medicine and botany evolved and were recorded, first in the Hypocratic Corpus, then by many other famous Greek physicians including Theophrastus, Dioscorides and Galen, who recorded the medicinal plants they used. This book traces the evolution of Greek medicine, the source of Western medicine, and looks at a selection of plants with healing properties, including a large number of trees which were both sacred and medicinal.

Studies in Greek Scenery, Legend and History Selected from His Commentary on Pausanias' 'Description of Greece,'【電子書籍】[ James George Frazer ]

James George Frazer's "Studies in Greek Scenery, Legend and History" is a scholarly exploration that intricately weaves the landscapes of Greece with its rich tapestry of myth and historical narratives. Employing a lyrical prose style infused with vivid descriptions, Frazer analyzes how the physical geography of Greece shaped its ancient cultures and legends. This work stands as a testament to the early 20th-century fascination with classical studies, showcasing how the interplay of nature and mythological motifs can illuminate our understanding of history. It not only serves as a travelogue but also as an insightful commentary on the cultural significance of Greek landscapes, enticing readers to consider the profound connections between place and narrative in the formation of classical identity. Frazer, a Scottish social anthropologist and folklorist, is best known for his monumental work, "The Golden Bough." His background in classical studies and anthropology greatly informed his perspective in this book, allowing him to juxtapose contemporary interpretations of Greek civilization with its storied past. This dual lens reflects Frazer's belief in the enduring relevance of ancient myths in understanding modern behaviors and social structures, which likely motivated his engagement with these themes in his travels through Greece. I highly recommend "Studies in Greek Scenery, Legend and History" to those who are enchanted by the classics, myth, and the interplay of geography and culture. It serves not only as a scholarly resource but also as a meditative journey through Greece's storied past, enriching readers' appreciation for how landscapes shape both legend and history.

The Fragility of Goodness Luck and Ethics in Greek Tragedy and Philosophy【電子書籍】[ Martha C. Nussbaum ]

This book is a study of ancient views about 'moral luck'. It examines the fundamental ethical problem that many of the valued constituents of a well-lived life are vulnerable to factors outside a person's control, and asks how this affects our appraisal of persons and their lives. The Greeks made a profound contribution to these questions, yet neither the problems nor the Greek views of them have received the attention they deserve. This book thus recovers a central dimension of Greek thought and addresses major issues in contemporary ethical theory. One of its most original aspects is its interrelated treatment of both literary and philosophical texts. The Fragility of Goodness has proven to be important reading for philosophers and classicists, and its non-technical style makes it accessible to any educated person interested in the difficult problems it tackles. This edition, first published in 2001, features a preface by Martha Nussbaum.

The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth Extracted Textually from the Gospels in Greek, Latin, French, and English【電子書籍】[ Thomas Jefferson ]

In 'The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth,' Thomas Jefferson presents a unique synthesis of the Gospels, meticulously distilling the essence of Jesus's teachings while omitting supernatural elements incongruent with Enlightenment ideals. Jefferson's literary style reflects a rationalist approach, exhibiting clarity and precision, as he seeks to reveal the moral philosophy underpinning Christianity. This work emerges from the broader context of the early 19th-century American Enlightenment, where reason and empirical evidence began to take precedence over traditional dogma, highlighting Jefferson's commitment to reasoned faith and a secular morality informed by the teachings of Jesus. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and a pivotal figure in the American Enlightenment, was profoundly influenced by Enlightenment thought and his personal interpretations of religion. His distaste for organized religion and fervent belief in reason prompted him to isolate what he deemed the true moral teachings of Jesus, resulting in a text that serves as both a personal manuscript and a public statement on the vitality of ethical principles devoid of superstition. This book is not simply a theological text; it invites readers to engage with the ethical core of Christianity through an Enlightenment lens. Scholars, theologians, and casual readers alike will find Jefferson's work a unique exploration of Jesus's moral teachings, rendering it a thought-provoking addition to discussions of religion, philosophy, and ethics in contemporary society.

This is the first study to assess in its entirety the fourth-century Latin commentary on Plato's Timaeus by the otherwise unknown Calcidius, also addressing features of his Latin translation. The first part examines the authorial voice of the commentator and the overall purpose of the work; the second part provides an overview of the key themes; and the third part reassesses the commentary's relation to Stoicism, Aristotle, potential sources, and the Christian tradition. This commentary was one of the main channels through which the legacy of Plato and Greek philosophy was passed on to the Christian Latin West. The text, which also establishes a connection between Plato's cosmology and Genesis, thus represents a distinctive cultural encounter between the Greek and the Roman philosophical traditions, and between non-Christian and Christian currents of thought.
