This book examines the foundations of multiculturalism in the context of ?migr? societies and from a multi-dimensional perspective. The work considers the politics of multiculturalism and focuses on how the discourse of cultural rights and intercultural relations in western societies can and should be accounted for at a philosophical, as well as performative level. Theoretical perspectives on current debates about cultural diversity, religious minorities and minority rights emerge in this volume.

The book draws our attention to the polarised nature of contemporary multicultural debates through a well-synthesised series of empirical case studies that are grounded in solid epistemological foundations and contributed by leading experts from around the world. Readers will discover a fresh re-examination of prominent multicultural settings such as Canada and Australia but also an emphasis on less examined case studies among multicultural societies, as with New Zealand and Italy.

Authors engage critically and innovatively with the various ethical challenges and policy dilemmas surrounding the management of cultural and religious diversity in our contemporary societies. Comparative perspectives and a focus on core questions related to multiculturalism, not only at the level of practice but also from historical and philosophical perspectives, tie these chapters from different disciplines together. This work will appeal to a multi-disciplinary audience, including scholars of political philosophy, sociology, religious studies and those with an interest in migration, culture and religion in contemporary societies.

The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society (Revised and Enlarged Edition)【電子書籍】[ Arthur Meier Schlesinger ]

The bestseller that reminded us what it means to be an American is more timely than ever in this updated and enlarged edition, including "Schlesinger's Syllabus," an annotated reading list of core books on the American experience.

The classic image of the American nation ー a melting pot in which differences of race, wealth, religion, and nationality are submerged in democracy ー is being replaced by an orthodoxy that celebrates difference and abandons assimilation. While this upsurge in ethnic awareness has had many healthy consequences in a nation shamed by a history of prejudice, the cult of ethnicity, if pressed too far, threatens to fragment American society to a dangerous degree. Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner in history and adviser to the Kennedy and other administrations, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., is uniquely positioned to wave the caution flag in the race to a politics of identity. Using a broader canvas in this updated and expanded edition, he examines the international dimension and the lessons of one polyglot country after another tearing itself apart or on the brink of doing so: among them the former Yugoslavia, Nigeria, even Canada. Closer to home, he finds troubling new evidence that multiculturalism gone awry here in the United States threatens to do the same. "One of the most devastating and articulate attacks on multiculturalism yet to appear."ーWall Street Journal "A brilliant book . . . we owe Arthur Schlesinger a great debt of gratitude."

Rethinking Multicultural Education for the Next Generation builds on the legacy of social justice multicultural education, while recognizing the considerable challenges of reaching today’s college students. By drawing on breakthrough research in two fields ? neuroscience and animal studies ? Nadine Dolby argues that empathy is an underlying element of all living beings. Dolby shows how this commonality can provide a scaffolding for building an exciting new approach to developing multicultural and global consciousness, one that has the potential to transform how our students see and relate to the world around them. This book features classroom vignettes and reflections, discussion of research with pre-service teachers on the concept of empathy, and pedagogical suggestions for fostering the new empathy in students.

Incorporating discussions of animal emotions, sustainability, and our responsibilities to all living creatures and the planet, Dolby challenges multicultural educators to rethink both curriculum and pedagogy and to begin new and bolder conversations about how empathy for humans, animals, and the planet must be part of a new approach to teaching.

Continuity and Change in the Native American Village Multicultural Origins and Descendants of the Fort Ancient Culture【電子書籍】[ Robert A. Cook ]

Two common questions asked in archaeological investigations are: where did a particular culture come from, and which living cultures is it related to? In this book, Robert A. Cook brings a theoretically and methodologically holistic perspective to his study on the origins and continuity of Native American villages in the North American Midcontinent. He shows that to affiliate archaeological remains with descendant communities fully we need to unaffiliate some of our well-established archaeological constructs. Cook demonstrates how and why Native American villages formed and responded to events such as migration, environment and agricultural developments. He focuses on the big picture of cultural relatedness over broad regions and the amount of social detail that can be gleaned from archaeological and biological data, as well as oral histories.

Art of War Paper: The Rhodesian African Rifles - The Growth and Adaptation of a Multicultural Regiment through the Rhodesian Bush War, 1965-1980 - Mugabe, Nkomo, Kissinger【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

The Art of War Program places contemporary operations (such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan) in a historical framework by examining earlier military campaigns. Case studies and readings have been selected to show the consistent level of complexity posed by military campaigns throughout the modern era. This paper in the series deals with the Rhodesian Bush War. The Rhodesian African Rifles overcame profoundly divisive racial and tribal differences among its members because a transcendent "regimental culture" superseded the disparate cultures of its individual soldiers and officers. The RAR's culture grew around the traditions of the British regimental system, after which the RAR was patterned. The soldiers of the RAR, regardless of racial or tribal background, identified themselves first as soldiers and members of the regiment, before their individual race and tribe. Regimental history and traditions, as well as shared hardships on deployments and training were mechanisms that forced officers and soldiers to see past differences. The RAR is remarkable because these bonds stayed true through to the end of the war, through incredible pressure on black Rhodesians to succumb to the black nationalist groups and cast off a government that was portrayed to them as oppressive, racist and hateful. Through the end of the Bush War, 1965-1980, RAR soldiers remained loyal and steadfast to their regiment, and that must be their legacy. In the end, the values of the government were irrelevant. It was the regiment that drew these men in, and their loyalty was more to their comrades and their heritage than to any particular government or cause.

Topics and subjects covered include: Renamo Frolizi, Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe, Zanu, Zapu, Frelimo, Zipra, Zipa, Zanza, Slous Scouti, Fireforce units, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, Ian Smith, Rhodesian Front, Joshua Nkomo, Battle for Bulawayo, Henry Kissinger.

Folkloric American Witchcraft and the Multicultural Experience A Crucible at the Crossroads【電子書籍】[ Via Hedera ]

Witchcraft and magic in America is an inherently multicultural experience and the folklore of our ancestors from every country converges here at a crossroads. It’s a complicated history; one of uncertainty and fear, displacement and enslavement, merging and migration. Our ancestors may not have agreed on how they saw the world or the magic that inhabits the world, but they shared a very real fear of Witches. Hags, Devils, charms and spells; witchery is rooted in our deepest superstitions and folklore. The traditions of people and their cultures stretch and intersect across the country and this is where the unique traditions of American witchcraft and magic are born. As practitioners seek to revive and reconstruct the paths of our ancestors, we’ve begun to trace the interconnected roots of witchcraft folklore as it emerged in the Americas, from the blending of people and their faiths. For multiracial practitioners, this is part of our identity as Americans and as witches of this country. Folkloric American Witchcraft and the Multicultural Experience is an exploration of the folklore, magic and witchcraft that was forged in the New World.

Reclaiming the Multicultural Roots of U.S. Curriculum Communities of Color and Official Knowledge in Education【電子書籍】[ Wayne Au ]

Within curriculum studies, a “master narrative” has developed into a canon that is predominantly White, male, and associated with institutions of higher education. This canon has systematically neglected communities of color, all of which were engaged in their own critical conversations about the type of education that would best benefit their children. Building upon earlier work that reviewed curriculum texts, this book serves as a much-needed correction to the glaring gaps in U.S. curriculum history. Chapters focus on the curriculum discourses of African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos during what has been construed as the “founding” period of curriculum studies, reclaiming their historical legacy and recovering the multicultural history of educational foundations in the United States.

Book Features:

Challenges the historical foundations of curriculum studies in the United States during the turn of and early decades of the 20th century.

Illuminates the curriculum conversations, struggles, and contentions of communities of color.

Highlights curriculum historically as a site at the intersection of colonization, White supremacy, and Americanization in the United States.

Brings marginalized voices from the community into the conversation around curriculum, typically dominated by university voices.

“Fascinating, innovative, and rigorously researched, this groundbreaking book will change how we think of the field of curriculum”
ーSonia Nieto, Professor Emerita, Language, Literacy, and Culture, University of Massachusetts

“This is such a timely and necessary volume. The Public Work of Christmas Difference and Belonging in Multicultural Societies【電子書籍】

Christmas is not a holiday just for Christians anymore, if it ever was. Embedded in calendars around the world and long a lucrative merchandising opportunity, Christmas enters multicultural, multi-religious public spaces, provoking both festivity and controversy, hospitality and hostility. The Public Work of Christmas provides a comparative historical and ethnographic perspective on the politics of Christmas in multicultural contexts ranging from a Jewish museum in Berlin to a shopping boulevard in Singapore. A seasonal celebration that is at once inclusive and assimilatory, Christmas offers a clarifying lens for considering the historical and ongoing intersections of multiculturalism, Christianity, and the nationalizing and racializing of religion. The essays gathered here examine how cathedrals, banquets, and carols serve as infrastructures of memory that hold up Christmas as a civic, yet unavoidably Christian holiday. At the same time, the authors show how the public work of Christmas depends on cultural forms that mark, mask, and resist the ongoing power of Christianity in the lives of Christians and non-Christians alike. Legislated into paid holidays and commodified into marketplaces, Christmas has arguably become more cultural than religious, making ever wider both its audience and the pool of workers who make it happen every year. The Public Work of Christmas articulates a fresh reading of Christmas ? as fantasy, ethos, consumable product, site of memory, and terrain for the revival of exclusionary visions of nation and whiteness ? at a time of renewed attention to the fragility of belonging in diverse societies. American Exceptionalism and the Remains of Race Multicultural Exorcisms【電子書籍】[ Edmund Fong ]

In contemporary American political culture, claims of American exceptionalism and anxieties over its prospects have resurged as an overarching theme in national political discourse. Yet never very far from such debates lie animating fears associated with race. Fears about the loss of national unity and trust often draw attention to looming changes in the racial demographics of the body politic. Lost amid these debates are often the more complex legacies of racial hybridity. Anxieties over the disintegration of the fabric of American national identity likewise forget not just how they echo past fears of subversive racial and cultural difference, but also exorcise as well the changing nature of work and social interaction.

Edmund Fong’s book examines the rise and resurgence of contemporary forms of American exceptionalism as they have emerged out of contentious debates over cultural pluralism and multicultural diversity in the past two decades. For a brief time, serious considerations of the force of multiculturalism entered into a variety of philosophical and policy debates. But in the American context, these debates often led to a reaffirmation of some variant of American exceptionalism with the consequent exorcism of race within the avowed norms and policy goals of American politics. Fong explores how this "multicultural exorcism" revitalizing American exceptionalism is not simply a novel feature of our contemporary political moment, but is instead a recurrent dynamic across the history of American political discourse.

By situating contemporary discourse on cultural pluralism within the larger frame of American history, this book yields insight into the production of hegemonic forms of American exceptionalism and how race continues to haunt the contours of American national identity.

The Psychology of Health and Illness A Multicultural Perspective【電子書籍】[ Leslie D. Frazier ]

The Psychology of Health and Illness is a thoroughly updated version of Leslie Frazier’s previous textbook on health psychology, which provides an engaging and contemporary approach to understanding health psychology from a truly international perspective. Combining both biopsychosocial and lifespan developmental perspectives, the book integrates core theory, research, and practice on global and cross-cultural health issues. It includes thoughtful and deliberately inclusive coverage of marginalized groups, especially BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other underrepresented groups, designed to raise diversity and racial consciousness in a globally integrative way.

Alongside classic health psychology concepts, the author introduces students to cutting-edge scientific and medical topics such as epigenetics, the gut microbiome, and the nonmedical use of prescription drugs. The book also focuses on global public health and health disparities and promotes a strengths-based approach to health, rather than a deficits-based approach. It includes a wide range of pedagogical features including real-world applications, engaging anecdotes and case studies, opportunities for self-reflection, and numerous text boxes.

This is essential reading for undergraduate students on Health Psychology courses as well as those in related fields such as nursing and the allied health professions.

Islamic Radicalism and Multicultural Politics The British Experience【電子書籍】[ Tahir Abbas ]

The expression of an Islamic political radicalism in Britain has been one of the most dramatic developments in recent decades. Islamic Radicalism and Multicultural Politics explores the nature of this phenomenon by analysing the origins of Islam and its historical contact with Western Europe and Britain, and the emergence of Islamic political radicalism in the Muslim world and in the West.

Tahir Abbas draws on historical analysis and contemporary case studies to explore the post-war immigration and integration of Muslim groups, the complex relations that exist between a secular liberal Britain and a diverse but multifaceted Islam, and the extent of social and economic inequalities that affect Muslims as individual citizens and in local area communities. He shows how violent extremism among British Muslims is in reality influenced by a range of issues, including the factors of globalisation and contemporary politics, media and culture. Analysing and dissecting public policy, Abbas offers suggestions for tackling the major social, political and economic questions facing British Muslims in the post-7/7 era.

An important contribution to the study of religion, ‘race’ and ethnicity in modern Britain, this accessible work will be of interest to anyone working in the field of Islamic studies, sociology and political radicalism.

Cover design by Mahtab Hussain, www.mahtabhussain.com

Views from Beyond Metropolis Reimagine the American Way and learn ways to bridge multicultural divides in an ever-changing world【電子書籍】[ Alan O'Hashi ]

Author Alan O'Hashi reimagines Superman's American Way in his memoir Views from Beyond Metropolis: True Stories of a Japanese American Baby Boomer. He provides the reader with practical techniques to become more aware of their biases, how to undo them, and equip themselves to evolve in a growing multicultural world.

Alan looks at the history of legalized oppression in the United States through a cultural competency lens. The dominant culture enslaved African tribal members to drive the growing colonial economy. As the population grew and land was scarce, President Thomas Jefferson opened the West to aggressive settlement.

Through a cultural competency lens, Alan examines the history of legalized oppression in the United States, which typified the American obsession with racial and ethnic homogeneity that dates back to the 16th century. The dominant culture enslaved African tribal members to drive the growing colonial economy. As the population grew, President Thomas Jefferson opened the West to aggressive conquest of Native American lands. Alan asserts that long-standing racism toward Asians was exacerbated after the Empire of Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Americans feared that domestic Japanese might be spies. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which led to the mass incarceration of 120,000 West Coast Japanese in 10 Relocation Camps.

What can we learn from the experiences of Japanese Americans who endured societal racism supported by discriminatory government policies during and after World War II? Can we become more culturally competent and reimagine Superman's American Way as one of sharing and collaboration rather than individual wealth accumulation and acceptance of all for who they are instead of assimilation by exclusion?

The once-vibrant Japanese neighborhood on the 500 and 400 blocks of West 17th Street in Downtown Cheyenne, Wyoming, is the backdrop for his memoir. Alan and his family lived in the middle of nowhere Wyoming and avoided the War Relocation Camp experience. They still had to deal with overt and subtle racism during and after World War II. Alan learned how to be civil and developed practical cultural competency techniques from his experiences growing up in a strong extended family, living in a college dorm, purchasing his first home as a co-op, and living in a mixed-use urban neighborhood before it was trendy.
