New technologies will underpin the future generation of library catalogues. To facilitate their role providing information, serving users, and fulfilling their mission as cultural heritage and memory institutions, libraries must take a technological leap; their standards and services must be transformed to those of the Semantic Web. Bibliographic Information Organization in the Semantic Web explores the technologies that may power future library catalogues, and argues the necessity of such a leap. The text introduces international bibliographic standards and models, and fundamental concepts in their representation in the context of the Semantic Web. Subsequent chapters cover bibliographic information organization, linked open data, methodologies for publishing library metadata, discussion of the wider environment (museum, archival and publishing communities) and users, followed by a conclusion.

The product of over thirty years’ experience and in-depth understanding of bibliographic metadata

Takes both a bottom up and top down approach: from basic standards and case studies to Semantic Web tools and services; and from abstract models and generic guidelines to applications

Tells an insiders’ story of the experience developing tools for the transition of library systems, metadata, and its utility, into the new milieu

Natural Language Processing for the Semantic Web【電子書籍】[ Diana Maynard ]

This book introduces core natural language processing (NLP) technologies to non-experts in an easily accessible way, as a series of building blocks that lead the user to understand key technologies, why they are required, and how to integrate them into Semantic Web applications. Natural language processing and Semantic Web technologies have different, but complementary roles in data management. Combining these two technologies enables structured and unstructured data to merge seamlessly. Semantic Web technologies aim to convert unstructured data to meaningful representations, which benefit enormously from the use of NLP technologies, thereby enabling applications such as connecting text to Linked Open Data, connecting texts to each other, semantic searching, information visualization, and modeling of user behavior in online networks.

The first half of this book describes the basic NLP processing tools: tokenization, part-of-speech tagging, and morphological analysis, in addition to the main tools required for an information extraction system (named entity recognition and relation extraction) which build on these components. The second half of the book explains how Semantic Web and NLP technologies can enhance each other, for example via semantic annotation, ontology linking, and population. These chapters also discuss sentiment analysis, a key component in making sense of textual data, and the difficulties of performing NLP on social media, as well as some proposed solutions. The book finishes by investigating some applications of these tools, focusing on semantic search and visualization, modeling user behavior, and an outlook on the future.

Evolution of Semantic Systems【

Complex systems in nature and society make use of information for the development of their internal organization and the control of their functional mechanisms. Alongside technical aspects of storing, transmitting and processing information, the various semantic aspects of information, such as meaning, sense, reference and function, play a decisive part in the analysis of such systems.

With the aim of fostering a better understanding of semantic systems from an evolutionary and multidisciplinary perspective, this volume collects contributions by philosophers and natural scientists, linguists, information and computer scientists. They do not follow a single research paradigm; rather they shed, in a complementary way, new light upon some of the most important aspects of the evolution of semantic systems.

Evolution of Semantic Systems is intended for researchers in philosophy, computer science, and the natural sciences who work on the analysis or development of semantic systems, ontologies, or similar complex information structures. In the eleven chapters, they will find a broad discussion of topics ranging from underlying universal principles to representation and processing aspects to paradigmatic examples.

Semantic Mashups Intelligent Reuse of Web Resources【

Mashups are mostly lightweight Web applications that offer new functionalities by combining, aggregating and transforming resources and services available on the Web. Popular examples include a map in their main offer, for instance for real estate, hotel recommendations, or navigation tools.

Mashups may contain and mix client-side and server-side activity. Obviously, understanding the incoming resources (services, statistical figures, text, videos, etc.) is a precondition for optimally combining them, so that there is always some undercover semantics being used. By using semantic annotations, neutral mashups permute into the branded type of semantic mashups. Further and deeper semantic processing such as reasoning is the next step.

The chapters of this book reflect the diversity of real-life semantic mashups. Two overview chapters take the reader to the environments where mashups are at home and review the regulations (standards, guidelines etc.) mashups are based on and confronted with. Chapters focusing on DBpedia, search engines and the Web of Things inspect the main Web surroundings of mashups. While mashups upgrading search queries may be nearer to the everyday experience of readers, mashups using DBpedia input and sensor data from the real world lead to important new and therefore less known developments. Finally, the diversity of mashups is tracked through a few application areas: mathematical knowledge, speech, crisis and disaster management, recommendations (for games), inner-city information, and tourism.

Participants of the AI Mashup Challenge wroteall the chapters of this book. The authors were writing for their current and future colleagues ? researchers and developers all over the Web who integrate mashup functionalities into their thinking and possibly into their applications.

Grammar and Meaning A Semantic Approach to English Grammar【電子書籍】[ Howard Jackson ]

Grammar and Meaning is an introduction to the study of grammar of contemporary English. It provides an impressive survey of all the main areas of English grammar, from words through to sentences and texts. It introduces and explains the linguistic terms needed to talk about the ways in which language works, from simple terms like adjective to more complex terms like non-finite clause. To meet the needs of both students and scholars, Howard Jackson has produced an innovative approach to the study of English grammar. Instead of concentrating on the formal and theoretical discussion of grammar, as many introductions do, this original analysis examines the 'meanings' we want to express when we use language. Beginning with the question, "What do we talk about?", it goes on to investigate how these meanings are structured in the grammar of English. These notions are closer to our ordinary understanding of what language is doing, and therefore the forms and structures of grammar are more easily grasped. The book is extensively illustrated with examples from real English. With analytical exercises in each chapter and a comprehensive glossary of terms, the book will prove and invaluable aid to students of English language, linguistics and English as a Foreign Language, whilst also being accessible to anyone who studies English grammar as part of their course.

Cross-Cultural Multimedia Computing Semantic and Aesthetic Modeling【電子書籍】[ Shlomo Dubnov ]

The ability to communicate cultural codes in multimedia depends on their meaning and beauty, as perceived by different audiences around the globe. In this book, the ongoing research on computational modeling of visual, musical and textual contents is described in terms of identifying and mapping their semantic representations across different cultures. The underlying psychology of sense-making is quantified through analysis of aesthetics in terms of organizational and structural aspects of the contents that influence an audience’s formation of expectations for future signals, violations of these expectations, and explanations of their meaning. Complexity-accuracy tradeoffs in sound representation are further used to develop new computational methods that capture poietic and aesthetic aspects in music communication. Experimental studies are reported that try to characterize preferences for complexity in abstract, classical and traditional art and music across samples of Western andFar Eastern cultures. These experiments illustrate how aesthetics can be computed in terms of semantic and information measures, highlighting commonalities and uncovering differences in aesthetic preferences across cultures and individuals.

Semantic Modeling In Formal English【電子書籍】[ Dr. Ir. Andries Van Renssen ]

Semantic Modeling in Formal English describes how information can be modeled in a system independent way, by using standardized formalized English. This way of modeling enables universal data exchange and interoperability of systems by expressing information, knowledge and requirements in a human as well as computer interpretable way. That is done by creating semantic information models that include meaning as well as context. The resulting expressions are unambiguous and system independent. The book also describes the Gellish expression format for storage and exchange of information. Formal English is a standardized structured subset of natural English. Semantic Modeling describes how Formal English is defined and how information models can be composed and how they can be interpreted. It also provides a basis for the creation of universal semantic databases. This enables reduction of costs for data conversion and misinterpretation and speeds up data communication and data integration processes.

Frontend Workflow with HTML5 and SASS Book semantic, flexible and reusable code for your daily projects【電子書籍】[ Seba Alin Ionut ]

It is not that hard to explain why I've decided to write this book. The main reason is very simple: I want people to start learning writing clean, clear and smart code. On the other hand (in complement to the main reason), I also wanted to make developers aware of what they can achieve if they will think out of the box and not following rigorously some current working habits which tend to 'standardize' everything around.

This book started from a very strong desire of mine after seeing everywhere a lot of 'bad' use of HTML and CSS. I say 'bad' because I do not claim what I will expose in this book is the shiniest and coolest thing around. The approach I take is somehow opinionated, but it served me very well during the last two years so I'm really into sharing this knowledge with you. And after all, the rules that you are imposing on everything you do take you to an opinionated state of mind anyway, just like discipline is something that you attain after a lot of dedicated time, perseverance and hard work.

The book is for those of you who are sick and tired of working on a project that is taking a lot of time because you either start with no code base at all, you change very often new libraries and frameworks on the promise they will solve all your problems, or you simply find it difficult to wire up and organise your code in a smart and lucrative way, so you can focus on the project itself instead of worrying about your tools.

You will learn the following things:

write clean code - you will learn how to write clear, semantic and concise code that will make sense to you and your co-workers

better organisation of your projects - having things sorted out in a visible manner will bring you big benefits when you're searching for something and know where to find it or when you want to move things around without breaking anything else

creating modularized and reusable components - learn to create reusable components, modify and extend them easily

code faster and smarter (improve your workflow) - the time you spend on projects is very important, so if you will develop on a good code base, your coding speed will fasten up, but not only this, you will write code in a very semantic and understandable way, not only to you, but to others too

get a grasp of web components - every day the web technologies are immersing and it seems the future of web developing will be centered around web components, so basically a web component will serve you everything you need from it, it will act as a sole unit that communicates with other components

tailor your own web framework - creating your own framework that suits your needs and can be used in the best possible way to get things done

take it to a minimum - you will also learn how to grab out only the things you need on a particular project, and not overwhelming your code base with unnecessary stuff; this way you will make your clients Internet bandwidth happy and speed up response times
