Written with clarity and precision, Hindmarsh's literary style reflects both the theological rigor and the pastoral warmth characteristic of his era. The text serves as a pivotal reference that not only systematizes doctrinal principles but also positions them within the broader context of Christian thought, addressing the challenges of rationalism and skepticism that pervaded the period. By synthesizing scripture and theological reflection, Hindmarsh crafts a work that is both scholarly and accessible, making it relevant for scholars and laypersons alike. Robert Hindmarsh was a prominent figure in the early development of Christian thought, particularly within the context of the New Church, or Swedenborgianism. The True and False Theory of Evolution Navigating the Science-Religion Divide: A Balanced Perspective on Evolutionary Theories【電子書籍】[ Chauncey Giles ]

In "The True and False Theory of Evolution," Chauncey Giles presents a compelling critique of the prevailing evolutionary theories of his time, emphasizing the philosophical and theological dimensions often overshadowed by scientific discourse. This work intertwines rigorous analysis with eloquent prose, navigating the intersections of science, religion, and ethics. Giles employs a dialectical approach, challenging both the materialistic interpretations of evolution and advocating for a perspective that harmonizes scientific inquiry with spiritual understanding. The book is not only a reflection on evolutionary theory but also a broader meditation on humanity's place in the cosmos, urging readers to consider the moral implications of biological theories. Chauncey Giles was a prominent figure in American metaphysical thought, whose background in both theology and science greatly influenced his perspectives. As a member of the New Thought movement, Giles sought to reconcile spiritual insights with scientific findings, fostering a vision of evolution that acknowledges divine intelligence. His intellectual journey was marked by deep engagement with philosophical ideas and a commitment to exploring the interplay between faith and reason, which is vividly encapsulated in this text. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in the philosophy of science, religious thought, and the ongoing dialogue between faith and empirical inquiry.
In "Be Courteous, or, Religion, the True Refiner," M. H. Maxwell intricately weaves a narrative that explores the profound connections between courtesy and spirituality. Employing a reflective literary style rich in metaphor and moral allegory, Maxwell addresses the pivotal role of civility in fostering personal and societal transformation. The book situates itself within the broader context of Victorian moral literature, engaging with themes of etiquette and the cultivation of virtue through a religious lens, ultimately positing that true refinement of character is intrinsically linked to acts of kindness and respect. Rising Road A True Tale of Love, Race, and Religion in America【電子書籍】[ Sharon Davies ]

It was among the most notorious criminal cases of its day. On August 11, 1921, in Birmingham, Alabama, a Methodist minister named Edwin Stephenson shot and killed a Catholic priest, James Coyle, in broad daylight and in front of numerous witnesses. The killer's motive? The priest had married Stephenson's eighteen-year-old daughter Ruth to Pedro Gussman, a Puerto Rican migrant and practicing Catholic. Sharon Davies's Rising Road resurrects the murder of Father Coyle and the trial of his killer. As Davies reveals with novelistic richness, Stephenson's crime laid bare the most potent bigotries of the age: a hatred not only of blacks, but of Catholics and "foreigners" as well. In one of the case's most unexpected turns, the minister hired future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black to lead his defense. Though regarded later in life as a civil rights champion, in 1921 Black was just months away from donning the robes of the Ku Klux Klan, the secret order that financed Stephenson's defense. Entering a plea of temporary insanity, Black defended the minister on claims that the Catholics had robbed Ruth away from her true Protestant faith, and that her Puerto Rican husband was actually black. Placing the story in social and historical context, Davies brings this heinous crime and its aftermath back to life, in a brilliant and engrossing examination of the wages of prejudice and a trial that shook the nation at the height of Jim Crow. "Davies takes us deep into the dark heart of the Jim Crow South, where she uncovers a searing story of love, faith, bigotry and violence. Rising Road is a history so powerful, so compelling it stays with you long after you've finished its final page." --Kevin Boyle, author of the National Book Award-winning Arc of Justice "This gripping history...has all the makings of a Hollywood movie. Drama aside, Rising Road also happens to be a fine work of history." --History News Network

In "Be Courteous, or, Religion, the True Refiner," M. H. Maxwell intricately weaves a narrative that explores the intersections of courtesy, morality, and spiritual refinement. The book uses a blend of didactic prose and reflective storytelling to advocate for the importance of civility in both personal conduct and societal interactions. Set against the backdrop of the social and religious upheavals of the late 19th century, Maxwell's work addresses the moral imperatives of the era, suggesting that true religion acts as a catalyst for personal transformation and societal improvement. Maxwell, a passionate advocate for social reform and religious education, draws inspiration from his background in theology and the Christian revival movements of his time. His personal experiences with the struggles of faith and courtesy in a rapidly changing world inform the depth and sincerity of his observations. This context enhances the book's resonance, as Maxwell's arguments are reinforced by anecdotal evidence and theological reflections that invite readers to engage deeply with his ideals. This book is a profound exploration of the qualities that elevate human interaction, making it essential reading for those interested in ethical philosophy, religious studies, and social etiquette. Faith: The Essence of True Religion【電子書籍】[ Hinckley ]

"Faith, which is the very essence of personal conviction, has always been and always must be at the root of religious practice and endeavor."

With penetrating insight and stirring conviction, Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, explains how our lives can be enriched by an abiding faith in God and his gospel.

Just as faith inspired the great religious movements in history, from the Exodus to the Reformation to the Restoration, faith can play a key role in our personal lives. President Hinckley writes, "Faith can become the very wellspring of purposeful living. There is no more compelling motivation to worthwhile endeavor than the knowledge that we are children of God." This "living, vital force" is a marvelous gift available to everyone.

President Hinckley imbues his discussion with the confidence that the Lord will bless with success those who seek a testimony of the four gospel cornerstones: the divinity of Jesus Christ, the vision of the Prophet Joseph Smith, the truth of the Book of Mormon, and the restoration of the priesthood. "Without certitude on the part of believers," he observes, "a religious cause becomes soft, without muscle, without the driving force that would broaden its influence and capture the hearts and affections of men and women."

Denuded Devotion to Christ The Ascetic Piety of Protestant True Religion in the Reformation【電子書籍】[ Larry D. Harwood ]

Much of the emerging Protestantism of the sixteenth century produced a Reformation in conscious opposition to formal philosophy. Nevertheless, sectors of the Reformation produced a spiritualizing form of Platonism in the drive for correct devotion. Out of an understandable fear of idolatry or displacement of the uniquely redemptive place of Christ, Christian piety moved away from the senses and the material world--freshly uncovered in the Reformation. This volume argues, however, that in the quest for restoring "true religion," sectors of the Protestant tradition impugned too severely the material components of prior Christian devotion. Larry Harwood argues that a similar spiritualizing tendency can be found in other Christian traditions, but that its applicability to the particulars of the Christian religion is nevertheless questionable. Moreover, in that quest of a spiritualizing Protestant "true religion," the Christian God could shade toward the conceptual god of the philosophers, with devotees construed as rationalist philosophers. Part of the paradoxical result was to propel the Protestant devotee toward a denuded worship for material worshipers of the Christian God who became flesh.

This faith is first set forth in a universal and in a particular form, that it may serve as a preface set before the work that follows, also as a gate giving entrance to a temple, and as a summary, containing in their own mode the particulars that succeed. It is called the faith of the New Heaven and of the New Church because heaven which is the abode of angels, and the church which is made up of men, act as a one, like the internal and the external man; consequently the man of the church who is in the good of love from the truths of faith and in the truths of faith from the good of love, is, in respect to the interiors of his mind, an angel of heaven; and being such he after death enters heaven and there enjoys happiness in proportion to the state of conjunction of his love and faith. Let it be known that in the New Heaven, which the Lord is now establishing, this faith is its preface, gate, and summary. THE FAITH OF THE NEW HEAVEN AND OF THE NEW CHURCH IN ITS UNIVERSAL FORM is as follows: The Lord from eternity, who is Jehovah, came into the world to subjugate the hells and to glorify His Human; and without this no mortal could have been saved; and those are saved who believe in Him. [2] This is called the faith in its universal form, because this is the universal principle of faith; and the universal principle of faith must be in each thing and in all things of it. It is a universal principle of faith that God is one in essence and in person, in whom is a Divine trinity, and that He is the Lord God the Savior Jesus Christ. It is a universal principle of faith that no mortal could have been saved unless the Lord had come into the world. It is a universal principle of faith that He came into the world to remove hell from man, and that He did remove it by means of contests with it and victories over it, and thereby He subdued it and reduced it to order and made it obedient to Himself. It is a universal principle of faith that He came into the world to glorify His Human which He took on in the world, that is, to unite it with the Divine from which [are all things], and thereby He eternally holds hell in order and under obedience to Himself. As this could be accomplished only by means of temptations admitted into His Human, even to the last of them, which was the passion of the cross, He endured even that. These are the universal principles of faith relating to the Lord. [3] The universal principle of faith on man's part is that he should believe in the Lord; for by believing in Him there is conjunction with Him and thereby salvation. To believe in the Lord is to have confidence that He saves; and as only those who live rightly can have this confidence, this, too, is meant by believing in Him And this the Lord teaches in John: This is the Father's will, that everyone that believeth in the Son may have eternal life (John 6:40); and again: He that believeth in the Son hath eternal life; but he that believeth not in the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him (John 3:36).

The Spirit of Early Evangelicalism True Religion in a Modern World【電子書籍】[ D. Bruce Hindmarsh ]

Evangelicalism appeared as a new pattern of Christian devotion at a moment when the foundations of Anglo-American society were shifting. The Spirit of Early Evangelicalism locates the rise of evangelical religion in relation to movements that we now routinely acknowledge with capital letters: Modernity, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment. The book examines the evangelical awakening in connection with the history of science, law, art, and literature. The eighteenth century saw a profound turn toward nature and the authority of natural knowledge in each of these discourses. As a more democratic public sphere became available for debating contemporary concerns, evangelicals forcefully pressed their agenda for "true religion," believing it was still possible to experience "the life of God in the soul of man." The results were dramatic and disruptive. Bruce Hindmarsh provides a fresh perspective, and presents new research, on the thought of leading figures such as John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, and Jonathan Edwards. He also traces the significance of evangelical spirituality for elites and non-elites across multiple genres. This book traces the meaning of evangelical devotion in a rich variety of contexts, from the scribbled marginalia of lay Methodists and the poetry of an African-American laywoman to the visual culture of grand manner portraits and satirical prints. Viewing devotion, culture, and ideas together, it is possible to see the advent of evangelicalism as a significant new episode in the history of Christian spirituality.

The Great Derangement A Terrifying True Story of War, Politics, and Religion at the Twilight of the American Empire【電子書籍】[ Matt Taibbi ]

A REVELATORY AND DARKLY COMIC ADVENTURE THROUGH A NATION ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWNーFROM THE HALLS OF CONGRESS TO THE BASES OF BAGHDAD TO THE APOCALYPTIC CHURCHES OF THE HEARTLAND

Rolling Stone’sMatt Taibbi set out to describe the nature of George Bush’s America in the post-9/11 era and ended up vomiting demons in an evangelical church in Texas, riding the streets of Baghdad in an American convoy to nowhere, searching for phantom fighter jets in Congress, and falling into the rabbit hole of the 9/11 Truth Movement.
Matt discovered in his travels across the country that the resilient blue state/red state narrative of American politics had become irrelevant. A large and growing chunk of the American population was so turned offーor radicalizedーby electoral chicanery, a spineless news media, and the increasingly blatant lies from our leaders (“they hate us for our freedom”) that they abandoned the political mainstream altogether. They joined what he calls The Great Derangement.
Taibbi tells the story of this new American madness by inserting himself into four defining American subcultures: The Military, where he finds himself mired in the grotesque black comedy of the American occupation of Iraq; The System, where he follows the money-slicked path of legislation in Congress; The Resistance, where he doubles as chief public antagonist and undercover member of the passionately bonkers 9/11 Truth Movement; and The Church, where he infiltrates a politically influential apocalyptic mega-ministry in Texas and enters the lives of its desperate congregants. Together these four interwoven adventures paint a portrait of a nation dangerously out of touch with reality and desperately searching for answers in all the wrong places.
Funny, smart, and a little bit heartbreaking, The Great Derangement is an audaciously reported, sobering, and illuminating portrait of America at the end of the Bush era.

"The True Christian Religion" is structured in three main parts:The Doctrine of the Lord: This part discusses Swedenborg's unique understanding of the nature of God, particularly the doctrine of the Trinity as understood within the New Church. Swedenborg asserts that God is one in essence and person, and that the Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit are not separate persons but different aspects of the one God.The Doctrine of the Sacred Scripture: In this part, Swedenborg presents his approach to understanding the Bible, emphasizing the idea of the inner spiritual meaning contained within the literal text. He introduces the concept of correspondences, which suggests that there is a symbolic and spiritual significance to the stories and teachings in the Bible. The Doctrine of Life: This part provides guidance on how to live a life in accordance with spiritual principles. Swedenborg discusses the importance of love and charity, the role of free will, and the process of spiritual transformation and regeneration.

The Perfect Religion, A Beacon to the True Kingdom of God Where Have you Been Hiding?【電子書籍】[ Phillip Cimei ]

Is there such a thing as a perfect religion? If so, then why are there over 34,000 branches of the Christian faith? If there is one true body of believers, why do some feel like the following: - I need to wander around from church to church because I'm not satisfied - I'm afraid if I make a mistake I'm hell bound - I'm stuck in a lukewarm church with members who are satisfied with a mediocre religious life - I'm tired of that one doctrinal point that defines my church and excludes other Christians - I'm not sure if what the preacher is teaching is correct, but I'm afraid to buck the system The author, having embraced all of these distressing feelings, takes the reader on an unprecedented treasure hunt to find that illusive perfect religion. And after fifty years of digging, he might have hit the mother lode""the Sermon on the Mount. Will it satisfy those still searching for the truth? Will it reaffirm the faith of those who have found the treasure? Will this truth set those shackled to a confused state free? The author addresses the problem head on. He weaves through the maze of controversy, theological mumbo jumbo, and religious opinions to give answers to why there is so much division in the church, and why so many wandering souls are searching, if not in their heart, from church to church. He uses captivating illustrations""a girl with a moose, a boy ravaged with a flesh-eating disease, and a vulture eyeballing a starving child""to bring to life Christ's quest to show those wandering souls the way. Are you brave enough to take the journey? "Will I truly find God?" you ask. "I love those who love Me and those who seek Me diligently will find Me" (Prov. 8:17).

What are the true doctrines of Christianity? In this book - a combination of all three volumes - the author Emanuel Swedenborg sets out to describe the true doctrines of Christianity, based on scripture and revelations he received through heavenly visions. For those questioning the definition of the Trinity that was defined in the fourth century and later, Swedenborg describes a view of God Who is One in person, Jesus Christ. As Jehovah in human form, Jesus progressively resisted temptation in His human, until he made his human Divine, and became the God-man. It was through this process that Jesus saved all of humanity, as His Holy Spirit is now available to all to help people resist temptation and live the Christian life according to God's will. Swedenborg stated, "it is a law of order that as far as man approaches and draws near to God, which he must do altogether as of himself ー so far God approaches and draws near to man, and conjoins Himself with him." The book first discusses the different manifestations of God, as God the Creator, God the Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit. The book also discusses how the sacred scripture is Divinely inspired, as it is the Divine Truth itself which allows communion between humankind and heaven. Both the literal and spiritual meanings of the ten commandments of the Decalogue are discussed, which contains all the precepts of eternal life. Other topics include doctrines concerning faith, charity, free will, repentance, reformation and regeneration. The symbolism of two Holy Sacraments Baptism and Holy Supper are explained in detail. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion concerning the end of the age, and an explanation of the Second Coming and the prophecies contained in the Apocalypse.

This book sets out to describe the true doctrines of Christianity, based on scripture and revelations the author received through heavenly visions. It is volumes 30, 31 and 32 of the multi-volume work The Divine Revelation of the New Jerusalem, which contains all the major theological works of Emanuel Swedenborg.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He journeyed to England, Holland, France, and Germany to study and work with leading scientists in western Europe. Upon his return he apprenticed as an engineer under the brilliant Swedish inventor Christopher Polhem (1661-1751). King Charles XII of Sweden gave him a salaried position as an overseer of Sweden's mining industry (1716-1747). After the death of the King, Emanuel was ennobled by Queen Ulrika Eleonora. This gave him a seat in the Swedish House of Nobles, where he remained an active participant in the Swedish government throughout his life. A member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, he devoted himself to scientific studies and philosophical reflections that culminated in a number of scientific publications, mainly concerning minerology and physiology, where he had made several discoveries. From 1743 to 1745 he entered a transitional phase that resulted in a shift of his main focus from science and philosophy to theology. Throughout the rest of his life he maintained that this shift was brought about by Jesus Christ, who appeared to him, called him to a new mission, and opened his perception to a permanent dual consciousness of this life and the spiritual world of heaven and hell. Although he at first published his theological works anonymously, he became more well known to the public when he had a clairvoyant experience where he could describe a fire in Stockholm in 1759, over 400 km away. This was investigated by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, who confirmed the event, and it was also noted by Carl Jung who borrowed from Swedenborg for many of his ideas in psychology. At other times Swedenborg demonstrated his clairvoyant abilities to multiple witnesses, including John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Zen master D.T. Suzuki called Swedenborg the "Buddha of the North."

Islam: Religion of Health, Not Submission TRUE MEANING OF ISLAM【電子書籍】[ MOHAMMAD BABAEE ]

“Islam: Religion of Health, Not Submission” dives deeply and expertly into the meaning of the word “Islam.” For the first time, it opens a window into the forgotten essence of Islam. This book introduces a scientific and practical way of understanding the religion and its rules. This way, any Muslim with any level of education can distinguish truth from superstition. It is argued that the word “Islam” is a name that God ordered his prophet Muhammad to choose. This emphasis on choosing the name of the religion is full of meaning, which unfortunately has not investigated adequately throughout history. Given the emphasis on the name of the religion in the Quran, this book goes into etymological, scientific, and historical detail to shed light on the real meaning of Islam.
