The Watford Knight's Fee The Manors of Medieval Watford, Northamptonshire【電子書籍】[ Murray Johnston ]

Today, Watford village in Northamptonshire is known for little more than the Watford Gap motorway stop. But, for 600 years, the parish was home to one of medieval England’s first knight’s fees.As far back as the Norman Conquest of 1066, Watford with three towns was exceptional. Soon after, the king awarded Watford as a knight’s feeーa parcel of land sufficient to support a knight. Two centuries on, the single holding was broken into separate manors for the deceased lord’s daughters. Some 350 troublesome years and three families later, the manors of Watford were recombined by a wealthy London merchant.Remarkably, the heirs of the Ardern family of Watford held the manors continuously for nearly 500 years from the twelfth century, claiming a unique place in English history.Accurately presented and meticulously researched, The Watford Knight’s Fee explores the Watford manors, revealing surprising stories of their lands and those who occupied their medieval halls. The first book of its kind to be published on the subject, The Watford Knight’s Fee is a must-read for any English or medieval history enthusiast. Author Murray Johnston adds colour to the story with original text and images of documents, reproductions of maps of the grounds, and ample charts of land holdings.

Watford Forever How Graham Taylor and Elton John Saved a Football Club, a Town and Each Other【電子書籍】[ John Preston ]

**The Sunday Times Sports Book of the Year
A Times Book of the Year
A Financial Times Book of the Year
A Guardian Book of the Year
A New Statesman Book of the Year

'The heartwarming story of the collaboration and friendship between English football’s oddest couple, Elton John and Graham Taylor'** The Times

' A wonderful, feel-good account of an ultimately English provincial story' Simon Kuper
_____________________

An unforgettable British underdog story from one of our greatest narrative nonfiction writers, John Preston, and the international musical icon and bestselling author, Sir Elton John.

Britain in the 1970s was beset by unrest and unemployment, as inflation soared, fuel was scarce, and hooliganism was on the rise. And for Watford FC, the outlook was even gloomier. Rundown and rat-infested, Watford were an ailing side with holes in their kit and barely enough fans to fill a stand. Of the 92 clubs in the Football League, spread across four divisions, Watford were in 92nd place.

Meanwhile, Elton John was the most successful rockstar in the world. With six-inch platforms, spangled jumpsuits, and peroxide hair, he was glamorous, gay, and seemingly a world away from the semi-detached house in Pinner where he had supported Watford FC as a child. Many assumed he would move to America. Instead, he bought the football club.

Watford Forever is the remarkable story of Elton John's ownership of Watford FC and its transformational journey to the top of the First Division under iconic manager Graham Taylor. Perhaps most remarkably, four of the same players who had been written off as has-beens went with them all the way from the bottom to the top. Inspiring and infectiously funny, this is a tribute to football's unlikeliest friendship as Elton John and Taylor, a straight-talking former fullback with a love of Vera Lynn, beat the odds and their personal demons to save a club and a community.

Immersed in the grime and glamour of '70s Britain, Watford Forever is one of sport's great underdog stories and a love letter to the beautiful game.

A Layman’S View of Seventy Years of America’S Foreign Policy【電子書籍】[ Ben A. Watford ]

In theory, this treatise should include the more than 115 countries that the United States has military presence and the Central Intelligence Agency has operatives. However, that would be overstating the intention of the treatise. What is endeavored here is an attempt to give the American people a short view of the involvement of America, the National Security Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency in world affairs. It is not the intent of this treatise to be a criticism of my homeland, the United States of America. Indeed, in most countries on the globe, I would be arrested, jailed, tortured, and put to death for even attempting such a project. The very fact that I can write this book and still be alive is a testament to Americas unique form of capitalism.

Born in S?o Paulo, 1953 and raised in Watford, John Moxley left school at 16, joined the Merchant Navy and went to sea in the late 1960’s to escape his criminal past. His adventures led him into numerous hotspots where he crossed swords with, among others, American bikers, manic seamen, the forces of law and order, and a psychotic Maori. He explains how the naivety of youth took him within a hair’s breadth of being jailed for drug smuggling, how his first trip as an officer found him in the Vietnam warzone, and how his rebellious nature brought him close to blows with his Captain before jumping ship. He fled two days before a court appearance and worked his way around Australia and New Zealand, from a dockside bar as a bouncer to a sugar plantation in far north Queensland. He returned to London at the forefront of the punk revolution of ’77 before eventually settling down to become an honest financier. This is an authentic tale told at a reckless pace without gloss or sentimentality but with plenty of humour.

Watford Through Time【電子書籍】[ John Cooper ]

Watford is situated between the Rivers Gade and Colne, fifteen miles north-west of London in what Charles Lamb, the eighteenth-century English essayist, once called 'hearty, homely, loving Hertfordshire'. A Saxon chief named Wata is believed to have settled where the existing Lower High Street crosses the Colne, and this came to be known as Wata's Ford, later shortened to Watford. Watford Through Time takes the reader on a nostalgic journey through the old market town and the beautiful Cassiobury Park at a time when the pace of life was much slower and more tranquil than it is today. Client and Supplier Relationship Factors in Logistics and Supply Chain in the Indian Entertainment Industry【電子書籍】[ Michael Watford ]

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: B, Stanford University, language: English, abstract: Event management industry is an industry of glamour, hype, and spot lights. While this is the fa?ade of this industry, the backstage of this industry is very different and highly unorganized as is evident in this report. While Price Waterhouse Coopers along with FICCI was one among the first ones to make a report and call this a sunrise industry, others like Ernest &Young (E&Y) and McKinney's have followed the trend. Other than very brief mentions here and there, even at policy levels, this industry does not seem to have attracted that it duly requires nor has it attracted investments of serious magnitude. The supply chain of this industry is intensely temporary in nature as the business is seriously intermittent. This document goes on to explore variety of events and vendors as also naming relationship between the client and vendors, power of client over a vendor, and lack of established customer satisfaction methodologies as key factors which influence the relationship between the vendors and clients in this industry. ?

Struggle and Suffrage in Watford Women's Lives and the Fight for Equality【電子書籍】[ Eugenia Russell ]

A study of the many changes in women’s lives in an English town over the course of a century.

This book shines a light on women’s lives in and around the English town of Watford, in the home and at work, in traditional rural employment or in dressmaking, textiles, and the silk industry. The lives of local women are put into the context of the national movement to address inequality and injustice, highlighting the often difficult existences of those employed in domestic service; the impact of poor housing and terrible poverty on women; efforts to redress the situation; and changes in social hierarchy. Individual stories show that there were opportunities for women to take control of their lives, some excelling as entrepreneursーowning shops, pubs, and other businesses.

During this time of immense social change, pioneering women within the community set the example for others to follow, whether as political activists and suffragettes connecting with the feminist issues of their times or as prominent members of the community dedicating their lives to the needs of others. The region was notable for fostering the talents of numerous prominent artists, Lucy Kemp-Welch, the illustrator of Black Beauty and creator of many recognizable war propaganda posters being the most famous, and women in the sciences, such as Harriette Chick, who worked in the Lister Institute in Elstree. Also addressed in this book are the growth of education for girls, and how contributions during times of crisisーfrom nursing to wartime factory workーled to the reappraisal of the role of women in postwar Britain.

From Father to Son How Fate and Family Made Me a Watford Fan【電子書籍】[ Paul Bishop ]

From Father to Son is Paul Bishop's semi-autobiographical account of his love of football, and most of all his local team Watford. It touches on the innocence of childhood and the influence of parents, family, friends, and in Paul's case Jimmy Hill, Johnny Haynes and many others. Part history, part travelogue, the book takes the reader on a nostalgic trip from the early 1960s, when football was a game and not a business. It explains why a five-minute segment in Kes makes it a better football film than Escape to Victory. It was an era when all English grounds were dominated by terraces, you could meet your mates and have a chat on the 'cinder curve' at Vicarage Road, as you marvelled at the skill of Ray Lugg and the heading ability of Barry Endean. The author also acknowledges the original 'boss' in his young eyes... Watford's legendary manager Ken Furphy, who went from Workington to New York Cosmos, via Watford, and ended up coaching both Pele and Johan Cruyff.

You Can't Fall off the Floor【電子書籍】[ Ben Watford ]

Can anything good come out of Winton? The King James Version of the Holy Bible relates an episode in which Jesus Christ was choosing men to become Disciples. Phillip was sent to invite Nathanael to join the other followers. When Phillip informed Nathanael that Jesus of Nazareth was indeed the Messiah, Nathanael asked, Can anything good come out of Nazareth?

Nazareth, like Winton, was not a place in which one would expect to find greatness. The negative label that too often has been placed on small, rural towns and their people can become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Unless an individual has a healthy view of self, he or she may live down to the level of popular perception.

I spent a fair amount of my youth living with the socially assigned designation of country kid. The inference of this distinction was that I lacked many of the virtues that were automatically attributed to city kids. That may have been true, but the net result was that it motivated me to prove that something good could come out of Winton. As Phillip did to Nathanael, in this book, we invite all to come and see.

Watford Forever: How Graham Taylor and Elton John Saved a Football Club, a Town and Each Other【電子書籍】[ John Preston ]

The unforgettable story, decades before Ted Lasso, of the real-life Watford Football Team, transformed into a powerhouse by coach Graham Taylor and owner Elton John.

Nothing has brought English soccer more immediately into the American mainstream than Ted Lasso, which captivated the nation in thirty-four episodes over three seasons. But before there was Jason Sudeikis’s lovable and, at first, hapless AFC Richmond, there was Watford Football Club, a team from the outskirts of London with barely enough fans to fill its standsーand which, in the mid-1970s, was languishing in 92nd place at the bottom of the last division of the English Football League. That is, until rock superstar Elton Johnーwho, with his dad, had followed the team as a boyーbought the lowly franchise and, with legendary manager Graham Taylor, transformed the luckless football club into a top-seeded Premier League team. Inspiring, funny, and ultimately heartbreaking, Watford Forever recalls the improbably tender relationship between Elton John and Taylor, a straight-talking former fullback, who together beat the odds and their personal demons to save a club and a struggling community.

Watford in 50 Buildings【電子書籍】[ Paul Rabbitts ]

The town of Watford, in Hertfordshire, began as a settlement in the twelfth century when the Abbot of St Albans, who owned the land here, was given permission to hold a weekly market. He chose a site on a slight rise above the ford over the River Colne, along a route already used by travellers. The abbot also arranged for the first parish church - St Mary’s - to be built adjacent to the market. In the Domesday Book there is no mention of Watford. The area of the current town and the land around it belonged to the abbot's manor of Cashio (later Cassio) and it continued to be controlled by the abbot until the sixteenth century. A few buildings remain from this period. Other gems are Monmouth House from the seventeeth century; the Free School, Frogmore House, Benskin House (now Watford Museum), Little Cassiobury and Russells from the eighteenth century; and some of the High Street shops. In this book Paul Rabbitts and Peter Jeffree highlight fifty buildings spanning the centuries that reveal Watford’s rich architectural history and tell the story of the changing face of this Hertfordshire town.
