This young Italian pianist continues to go from strength to strength and to broaden his already diverse catalogue of recordings for the label - spanning Bach, Godowsky and his own music - with this new album of Stravinsky's works for the piano. The music of Stravinsky, like Beethoven, unmistakably bears the imprint of being composed at the piano - think of the pounding chords of The Rite of Spring or for that matter the delicate right-hand traceries in a later ballet such as Orpheus. However, the composer wrote relatively little dedicated to his own instrument. There are concertante works such as the Capriccio, composed as much as anything to give him something to play, to tour with and earn valuable income from in his appearances with orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic. The solo music is more niche, but no less characteristic, every note a Stravinsky note as Elliott Carter remarked. The Cinq doigts (Five Fingers) of 1921 were composed for a recording - probably the first-ever piece of music specifically written for that purpose - though the recording itself was lost until recently. Much of Stravinsky's piano style is influenced by the records of ragtime which were brought back for him from New York around that time, including the rippling pianola textures and cross rhythms of the Sonata from three years later. Nearly all of these pieces belong to the Stravinsky of the 1920s - a figure of coruscating brilliance who could draw all music from the past to himself and make it his own. Counterpoint, hymn and a spirit of relaxed nonchalance all pervade the Serenade of 1925, while the brief Etudes encapsulate the glittering virtuoso tradition of Liszt and his successors within a few minutes. The rarity here is a transcription of the chorale from the Symphonies of Wind Instruments, which Stravinsky expeditiously made for a magazine tribute to the memory of Debussy. | 4,831円 |

The magnificent C major of Study No.1 opens this extraordinary set: a mighty chorale, the text of the original study in the left hand and it's inversion in the right hand are all combined in order to create a polyphonic work in full pianistic tone. In the final pages, the piano seems to express it's highest dynamic degree and, as Godowsky writes, "in the coda the player must not show the slightest sign of fatigue". Also based on Op.10 No.1, Study No.2 is a perfect example of Godowsky's left hand writing. A revolutionary use of the fingering and of the right pedal allows a polyphonic effect similar to the original. Godowsky wrote three studies (Nos. 23-25) for the left hand alone based on Chopin's Op.25 No.1. Of these, No.24 is intended to give the impression of a piece for four hands. The rippling texture of No.25 is reminiscent of an Aeolian harp. The final study (No.43), based on Op.25 No.12, is a tour-de-force for the left hand alone, covering the entire range of the keyboard by itself in homage to Chopin's 'Revolutionary' Etude. The performances are distinguished by 'great technical accomplishment and a relaxed, assured empathy': a verdict echoed by Classics Today in reviewing Delucchi's 2017 album of the elaborations and transformations wrought by Godowsky on Chopin's Etudes Op.10: 'every inch a viable contender alongside the Marc-Andr? During the 19th century, while his pupils were still alive to play them, his concertos still enjoyed a measure of familiarity and success, but Czerny's sheer industry obscured his creative achievements: where should a listener start with a catalogue of opus numbers into the four figures? The 48 Preludes and Fugues in the present collection are as good a place to start as any, especially for anyone familiar with their obvious inspiration in the Old Testament of contrapuntal technique assembled by Bach across two volumes of The Well-Tempered Clavier. Czerny would hardly claim to live up to the Leipzig master's probing depths of expression or originality of melodic inspiration, but his set nonetheless boasts pleasures of it's own, starting with the C major Prelude which puts a rhapsodic gloss on Bach's immortal introduction. And as early as the A minor Fugue we find a subject of notable individuality as well as the craft on Czerny's part to carry off a five-minute fugue of many grave beauties. There are more contemporary contrapuntal devices on show, too, such as the interludes of the fugues in Nos. 14 and 22. Overall the composer takes pains to integrate the principles of High-Baroque counterpoint with the 'galant' style that preceded the Biedermeier in the early decades of the 19th century, making this a collection at once in and outside it's time. | 5,644円 |
