Paganini was to the violin: a musician who extended the possibilities of his instrument in performance and who inspired countless composers to do the same in writing for it. His remarkable talent was immediately evident, to the extent that by 1843 he was already travelling throughout Europe on concert tours, accompanied by his father. It was Franz Liszt who described him as 'a Paganini of the Cello', presenting him with an Amati instrument as a token of his admiration. Piatti's concert-tours culminated in a visit to London, where he settled in 1846. In the mid-1800s, musical life in the British capital was full of energy and opportunity. When Verdi learnt that it would be Piatti leading the cellos in the first performances of his new opera, I Masnadieri, he wrote a Prelude consisting of a cello solo with an orchestral accompaniment, which he dedicated to the great cellist. In his own compositions Piatti reconciled virtuoso figurations with a highly lyrical approach to melody which is on show here in two of the songs he wrote for English audiences: O Swallow, Swallow (to a text by Alfred, Lord Tennyson) and La Sera ('I love the hour of the dying day'), an evening-time, sentimental ballad incorporating a cello solo clearly modelled on the opening of Rossini's William Tell Overture and astutely calculated to tug at the heartstrings of his well-to-do patrons, who would also want to perform such songs themselves. However, the bulk of Piatti's music was designed to show his own skill as a cellist to best advantage. This he triumphantly did with the stupendously virtuosic Capriccio Op.22 on a theme from Pacini's Niobe. The better-known Capricci Op.25 are not included here; instead, the opportunity has been taken by Andrea Noferini to record some of Piatti's lesser-known, standalone pieces such as the attractive Op.1 L'abbandono, and Notturno Op.20. 3,403円

あめりかん・ぱい
発売日: 2023/5/26輸入盤USレーベル: Brilliant Classics収録曲:コメント:During the years leading up to the beginning of the 20th century, Edvard Grieg was the most significant Scandinavian composer. He was educated at the Leipzig Conservatory, where his early influences were Schubert and Schumann. Like all of his fellow countrymen of that generation, he was orientated towards Denmark, the Danish language and Danish culture in general. He spent much time in Copenhagen. Later, in his early 20s, he developed an affinity for Norwegian peasant culture thanks to the influence of the great Norwegian musician Ole Bull. That effected a major change in his musical outlook, and for the rest of his life he immersed himself in Norwegian literature and folk music. It became a major part of his artistic philosophy and placed him firmly in the ranks of the nationalist composers that characterised the second half of the 19th century. The 4 Norwegian dances Op.35 are arrangements for piano four-hands of old folk tunes that Grieg took from a collection published by the musician and researcher Ludvig Mathias Lindeman. The composition was sketched in Copenhagen in January 1880 and brought to completion in the summer of the following year during a holiday in Lofthus. Grieg's Symphony in C minor EG 119 was composed in 1863-64, when Grieg was 20, and the melodies of it's second and third movements later came to be known in the present arrangement for piano duet known as 2 Symphonic Pieces Op.14. Grieg's name is notably tied to important stage works, among them Ibsen's Peer Gynt, one of the most performed plays in Norway. Grieg composed a score for the play of some 90 minutes of incidental music, from which he selcted the most beautiful numbers for two orchestral suites which he arranged in versions for piano solo and piano four-hands. Grieg wrote the 2 Walzer-Capricen Op.37 for piano four hands in 1883, after he and his lyric soprano wife, Nina, had reconciled after an estrangement and were once again happy together, travelling and performing in Germany and Rome. The 2 Nordic Melodies Op.63 were originally written for string orchestra in 1895 and published the following year along with arrangements for piano solo and piano duet. The work is dedicated to the Norwegian and Swedish ambassador to Paris Frederik Due, an enthusiastic amateur musician and composer and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Due sent Grieg some compositions for violin and piano, and one of his melodies appears in the first piece: 'In Folk Style'. The second piece, comprising the 'Cow-Call' and 'Peasant Dance', is a reworking of two pieces (Nos. 18 and 22) from Grieg's Op.17 (25 Norwegian Folk Ballads and Dances).During the years leading up to the beginning of the 20th century, Edvard Grieg was the most significant Scandinavian composer. 発売日: 2023/5/26輸入盤USレーベル: Brilliant Classics収録曲:コメント:?The most complete collection available of music by the father of Czech nationalism in music. Ma Vlast, The Bartered Bride and the String Quartet 'From My Life': all written within a decade of each other, all so fundamental in their different genres in forming a Czech national identity in music that it can seem incredible they were the work of a single composer. Yet this was the task that Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) had set himself from early on - not only to become 'a Liszt in technique and a Mozart in composition' but the voice of a new nation. Given the obstacles he faced, his success in realising this ambition is all the more impressive. To begin with he had to overcome his father's antipathy to his chosen destiny as a composer; then the vicissitudes of poverty, and then, at the height of his powers and renown, a succession of personal tragedies which left him deaf and mentally unstable; he died in reduced circumstances, living with his daughter, and it took the following generation of Czech composers to rehabilitate the hero who had lived in their midst. To begin with, Smetana won a reputation as the life and soul of the party thanks not least to the kind of piano miniatures which were published as his earliest surviving works. He sent one set to Liszt, who replied with characteristic generosity, and the elder composer's example, encouragement and friendship all became crucial to Smetana as he spread his wings. Large-scale orchestral works soon followed in his late 20s, such as the powerful if rambling Festive Symphony - here performed complete, a rarity in itself - and the G minor Piano Trio, written as an outpouring of grief at the death of his daughter Bedri?ka, and a powerful foreshadowing of later masterpieces. Finding recognition in his homeland hard to come by, he moved to Sweden, and it was only on his permanent return home in the early 1860s that The Bartered Bride and then Ma Vlast took shape, each through a complex genesis outlined by a new booklet essay and appreciation of the composer by Peter Quantrill. In their final forms they were acclaimed as the work of someone worthy to be hailed as a 'Czech Beethoven', for their heroic style, their mastery of old forms with a distinctively Czech twist, and their celebration of the nation's history and sense of itself.?The most complete collection available of music by the father of Czech nationalism in music. It was Beethoven's far more renowned teacher, Christian Gottlob Neefe, who wrote a biography of Luchesi and described his early training in music at home, then his move to Venice, and his early success as an opera composer. As a keyboard player and member of a Venetian opera company, Luchesi travelled to Germany in 1771 and made his career there, being appointed the Kapellmeister to the Prince Elector's court in Bonn as successor to Beethoven's grandfather. He attracted favourable mention in the journals of the English musical commentator and traveller Charles Burney, and the piano-maker JB Cramer also praised him as one of the best Italian composers of his day as well as an excellent organist. There have even been far-fetched claims that Luchesi was the true author of some of Mozart's best-known works! The six sonatas recorded here and published in Bonn in 1772 as Luchesi's Opus 1 were originally designated as sonatas for the harpsichord with violin accompaniment, much in the style of violin sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven. Luchesi, however, reduced the violin part to a marginal role, mostly doubling the keyboard's right-hand part; Roberto Plano has accordingly eliminated it altogether in this recording, saying that 'I believe it to be closer to the composer's original intention.'Andrea Luchesi was born in the Italian region of Friuli in 1841 and died in poverty 60 years later in Bonn, birthplace of the composer who grants him a tentative foothold on history, Ludwig van Beethoven. Luchesi, however, reduced the violin part to a marginal role, mostly doubling the keyboard's right-hand part; Roberto Plano has accordingly eliminated it altogether in this recording, saying that 'I believe it to be closer to the composer's original intention.' 3,388円

M? Vlast, The Bartered Bride and the String Quartet 'From My Life': all written within a decade of each other, all so fundamental in their different genres in forming a Czech national identity in music that it can seem incredible they were the work of a single composer. Finding recognition in his homeland hard to come by, he moved to Sweden, and it was only on his permanent return home in the early 1860s that The Bartered Bride and then M? Vlast took shape, each through a complex genesis outlined by a new booklet essay and appreciation of the composer by Peter Quantrill. In their final forms they were acclaimed as the work of someone worthy to be hailed as a 'Czech Beethoven', for their heroic style, their mastery of old forms with a distinctively Czech twist, and their celebration of the nation's history and sense of itself. 8,045円

あめりかん・ぱい
発売日: 2019/11/1輸入盤USレーベル: Brilliant Classics収録曲:コメント:Robert Schumann always enjoyed playing piano four-hands, even after the injury to his right hand curtailed any hope of a professional career. Playing this way was in any case associated with domestic pleasure rather than concert-giving, though plenty of composers in the early-Romantic era began to supply music for a hungry market of dedicated amateur musicians, Schumann included. His first work in the genre was a set of eight Polonaises written in 1828 and very much modelled on the example of Schubert, who died later the same year. These are outgoing works of tremendous charm and lively character, designed for enjoyment on the part of the musicians at least as much as the listener. Curiously Schumann did not return to the genre in the full flower of his career. The next four-hands work dates from 20 years later, a set of six Bilder aus osten (Pictures from the East) which he wrote as a Christmas present for his wife Clara in 1848. In these impromptus, vigorous and meditative moods alternate before culminating in No.6, where the two coexist. There followed the following year a set of 12 pieces Op.85 'for small and big children'. The published preface went some way towards explaining this lacuna in Schumann's output: 'Over the past 20 years there has been increasing awareness of the lack of short and substantial works originally composed for piano 4-hands. This most recent work by our brilliant Schumann will thus prove to be doubly welcome.' And so it has been with piano students ever since, from the joyous processional of the opening birthday march to the playful Dance of Bears, sprightly Round Dance and tender slow numbers such as the concluding Evening Song. Schumann's remaining music for piano four-hands shared this purpose of teaching and delighting children, as well as their teachers and parents: the Ball-Szenen and Kinder-Ball sets of miniatures both dating from 1853.Robert Schumann always enjoyed playing piano four-hands, even after the injury to his right hand curtailed any hope of a professional career. Side one features songs about loneliness and loss, binge-watching TV, doomed relationships, and disorientation during times of profound loss. Side two is a suite of four songs composed by Anthony Wilson in response to a commission from the Jazz Coalition Commission Fund. Of them, he says, The Bridge, Noontide, Already Won, and Pilgrim are dedicated to the memory and enduring legacy of US Congressman and champion of civil rights, the Honorable John Lewis. Traveling freely through a musical space beyond genre, The Plan of Paris is a tender, meditative, personal collection of music that features gorgeous contributions from a dream team of renowned musicians: pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist David Piltch, drummer Jay Bellerose, guitarist Harrison Whitford, keyboardist Patrick Warren, and clarinetist Brian Walsh.
