Bach wrote as inventively and idiomatically for the recorder throughout his career as he did for every other instrument at his disposal, but he left no concertos in which the instrument takes the spotlight. Thus Bosgraaf and his colleagues have attempted to answer the question, what might Bach have done, or could he have done, if he had written concertos for the recorder? They have looked for inspiration to the cantatas, and not only those where Bach composed memorable recorder parts such as the Actus Tragicus. For example, the album's opening G major concerto is compiled from a tenor aria of dazzling runs in BWV74, followed by the sorrowful opening Sinfonia of BWV12 (in which the oboe originally takes the starring role), and then another tenor aria from BWV81 which graphically illustrates the foaming waves of a stormy sea. In both aria transcriptions, Bosgraaf's recorder takes over the vocal line, and paints vivid sound pictures with his remarkable palette of tone colors. A second concerto in D major draws it's music from similar sources, followed by a Partita which the Dutch musicologist has arranged from movements of the Fifth French Suite. Interwoven with Christmas music, the album also includes world premiere recordings of recently discovered arrangements including Kyrie eleison ymas from Riga Cathedral's Riga Missal (Missale Rigense) manuscript. Led by the leading scholar of medieval music in the Baltic states, Guntars Pranis, the resident male vocal ensemble of Riga Cathedral, Schola Cantorum Riga, presents a unique insight into medieval Latvian music tradition in it's latest release from SKANi. Vox Clara features medieval music - Gregorian chant and examples of late medieval repertoire - to reflect the Northern European musical traditions of Hamburg, Riga and Lund as well as the rich heritage of early polyphony in Limoges. In the Middle Ages, each of these cities had it's own individual cultural expression and musical style. Although Gregorian chant still dominated sacred music during the period, it existed alongside a variety of paraliturgical and secular genres of music in which improvisation and the respective local musical traditions played an important role and inspired constant interaction. One and the same chant could sound very different depending on the location in which it was performed. Vox Clara offers a journey through this vivid and diverse musical life of late medieval Europe through a distinctly Latvian lens that has not been recorded before. Schola Cantorum Riga here performs the music in a way that serves to present something close to the true sound of sacred chant as it would have been performed in Riga during the medieval period. Inspired by the research of it's director Guntars Pranis, the ensemble draws on Riga's medieval chant tradition and the influence of folk tradition and polyphony that infiltrated sacred music during that time. The bagpipes, hurdy gurdy and ancient kokle instrument - all used in Latvian traditional music - and elements of the ancient form of traditional Latvian vocal polyphony, Teiksana or sauksana ("saying" or "calling") as heard in Miserere mei, help to present the ensemble's interpretation of how this music might have sounded in medieval Riga. The Veni Sancte Spiritus is sung in the early Latvian Livonian language, and the ensemble decided to sing the Latin words throughout the album in their local Latvian accent. The male vocal ensemble is resident at Riga Cathedral, considered the largest medieval church in the Baltics, which houses the Riga Missal (Missale Rigense). Some of his most widely performed works are for string orchestra, among them Musica dolorosa and the violin concertos Distant Light and Lonely Angel. Another one is his Symphony for Strings 'Voices', composed in 1991, as his native Latvia, along with Estonia and Lithuania, was breaking free from the crumbling Soviet Union. In a note on the work, Vasks has written: '... The new beginning was difficult. The symphony speaks of my essential, most meaningful themes. About life. About eternity. About conscience.' On this recording, 'Voices' is performed by Vasks' compatriots in the eminent Sinfonietta Riga, making their first appearance on BIS. The Sinfonietta has an ongoing collaboration with Maxim Rysanov, as soloist as well as conductor, and Rysanov here has occasion to show both sides of his musicianship, as he conducts the ensemble as well as performs the solo part in Vasks' recent Concerto for Viola. The concerto is dedicated to Rysanov, who premiered it in 2016 and now presents it on album for the first time. In four movements, the work demonstrate a characteristic feature of Vasks' style, the strong contrasts between translucent serenity and deep despair that remind us of the ephemeral and complex world we live in.SUPER-AUDIO CD | 3,790円 |
