Similarities and disparities are at play within these nine scores, but the overall tendency towards slowness and dynamics finely distinguished among the quieter ends of the spectrum prevails in each piece, as does a tempo that seldom if ever fluctuates. This basic, and by nature somewhat simplistic recapitulation works only as a means of placing the heritage to which Daniele Venturi clearly aligns himself, the flute as a timeless yet modern instrument, indeed a timelessly modern one, more a source of careful and thorough exploration than a harbinger of pastoral melody. | 4,454円 |

All three violin sonatas date from the years shortly before his breakdown, attempted suicide and subsequent committal to the asylum at Endenich where he spent his last days, forbidden to compose and deprived of his beloved Clara's company. That is not to say that the first two sonatas are in any way weak works, even if Schumann himself commented with the deadpan irony usually more associated with his young friend Brahms, 'I don't care for the first violin sonata, so I wrote a second, which I hope has turned out better'. Whatever the motivation, it is certain that Schumann, in spite of his fragile psychological condition, found creative energy to complete another impassioned chamber work in a very short time. As in the first sonata, in this work the febrile expressive and introverted language seems to escape from the typical style of the salons to a restless expression even in the slow movement, where violin and piano converse in an incessant and obsessive way. This is even more true of the densely polyphonic Third Sonata, which perhaps more than the previous two reveals the demons at Schumann's shoulder, but the composer's particular gift for the swift movement of chamber music lifts all the sonatas from the intricately circular movement which afflicts the heavier textures of other late music for larger forces such as the Mass.The pianist Marco Venturi contributes fine booklet notes to this new recording, in which he is partnered by Andrea Cortesi; this is their second recording for Brilliant Classics, following a disc which could hardly be more different in tone or aesthetic, of music by Philip Glass, Giya Kancheli and Erkki-Sven T??r (BC94814). These wonderful violin sonatas, written a few years before his death in an asylum, belie the dictum that Schumann started as a genius, and ended as a talent. These are works by a passionate genius, highly original, full of feverish energy, childlike wonder and contemplation. He opens with a quartet of liturgical voluntaries by Padre Antonio Casini, notable for their fluid brilliance. Luigi Ferdinando Casamorata (1807-1881) was a more significant figure in Florentine musical life who trained in law but composed sacred music throughout his career. These Twelve Short Exercises were designed for use by the students of the newly founded organ school in Florence. Limpid and classical in style, they exploit the full range of colours available on new Italian organs of the period. Casamorata's Organ Mass develops it's ideas in more relaxed fashion, less reliant on counterpoint than concerned to accompany the liturgy in a spirit of solemn devotion. Giovacchino Maglioni (1814-1888) was another composer and administrator who significantly contributed to the renewal of liturgical music against the prevailing fashion for opera. Matteo Venturini has chosen three excerpts from the third part of his Istituzioni Teorico-Pratiche per Organo from the 1870s; in character they comprise a missing link between the sunny extroversion of much operatically influenced instrumental writing of the period and the more sober aesthetic of the Cecilian movement. To capture the original soundscape and spirit of these pieces as envisaged by their composers, organist Matteo Venturini has selected two instruments of the period for this recording. With it's brilliant, direct voice, the monumental organ at Corsanico (Vincenzo Colonna 1606 / Agati-Tronci 1899) lends itself perfectly to the bright colours of Casini's music. The organ in the Basilica di Santa Maria di Nazareth in Sestri Levante (built by Fratelli Serassi, 1832), with it's intriguing solo register sound and magnificent tutti voices, was chosen for the works by Casamorata and Maglioni. | 3,403円 |

He is also credited for notating a number of Bach's final works. Given this most illustrious of mentors - and notable friends, such as C.P.E. Bach - it is surprising that Muthel's music has not been more widely appreciated since his own death in 1788. However, Matteo Venturini's new recording of his complete organ music is set to change that. Praised by the English music historian Charles Burney as "full of novelty, taste and grace", Muthel's compositions for the organ are wide-ranging: From imposing fantasias to more delicately paced chorale preludes, as well as a set of variations on the chorale "Jesu, meine Freude". His music is highly original, particularly in the inner movements which are characterized by rhythmically striking motifs and phrases, together with abrupt changes of dynamics. Three organs are used on this recording, all inspired by instruments of the North German Baroque, to demonstrate the variety of sound achievable in this graceful music. Matteo Venturini, winner of no less than eight competitions and a regular at prestigious international music festivals across Europe and America, is a seasoned interpreter of these works from the late Baroque in which he specialises. The author of a thesis on the organ works of Muthel's contemporary Daniel Magnus Gronau, Venturini's debut release on Brilliant Classics of Gronau's music (BC94843) was described as 'admirably played' in BBC Music Magazine and was Record of the Month on MusicWeb International. He was present at the master's deathbed, and he performed the funeral services, taking over the duties of the deceased Cantor.
