Terms such as "sentimentalism", "Sturm und Drang" or "pre-classical" are usually borrowed from other art forms and are potentially fraught with judgements or preconceptions. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach is one of the key figures of this "in-between time" and one of the representatives of a radical change in musical aesthetics. The philosopher and aesthetic theorist Johann Georg Sulzer described the ideal "soulful" trio sonata in his "General Theory of the Fine Arts" (1771-1774) as follows: "The actual trio has three main voices, which concert against each other, and as it were maintain a conversation in tones." In his opinion, music should reflect "a sensitive conversation in merely passionate tones among characters that are the same or different from one another". "Singing accompaniment of the theme, appropriate to each instrument; free imitations; unexpected and melodious entrances, in which one voice falls, as it were, into the speech of the other; throughout, a comprehensible and well-cadenced singing and interjections in all voices, without one being obscured by the other; even difficulties and passages of importance, for a change, fill out the remaining part of the piece, and make the trio one of the most pleasant pieces of chamber music." Sulzer also noted, "Good trios of this kind, however, are rare." According to Sulzer, the sonatas of "our Hamburg Bach" were a prime example of this genre. They "are so eloquent that one thinks one hears not tones but an intelligible language that sets our imagination and sensibilities in motion, and entertains. With this emotional and absolutely honest statement, Leo? Janacek summed up his lifelong fascination with folk songs during a stay in London in 1926. For Leo? Janacek (1854-1928), folklore was undoubtedly one of the essential sources of his work as a composer. Moravian Dances, Lachian Dances, and Suite for Orchestra, Op. 3, are heard on this release. Akira Ifukube (1914-2006) was one of the greatest composers on the contemporary music scene in his native country. At the same time, he provided Western listeners with an insight into Japanese musical culture. Although he became famous for his film music - he composed the scores of more than 250 films, of which the Godzilla series is particularly well known - his heart belonged to the world of classical music. His Japanese Suite, composed in 1933, is heard here. Ifukube wrote it after listening to recordings of Spanish music played by American pianist George Copeland (1882-1971). His productions were repeatedly nominated as the seasons's "Best production" in polls by the journal Opernwelt. In addition, he is one of the founding members of the ensemble MUSIKDEBATTE KOLN, which presents contemporary cross-cultural issues on the opera stage. The regret over a lost innocence is reflected in their songs. Baritone Benjamin Hewat-Craw and pianist Yuhao Guo have taken the 150th anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams' birth as an opportunity to present songs by British composers between the years 1904 and 1914. Both Ralph Vaughan Williams and lesser-known composers George Butterworth and Ivor Bertie Gurney fought in the First World War. More relevant today than ever, the recording links three different composers' biographies, which for two of them came to an abrupt end with the onset of the Great War. Butterworth was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Gurney suffered from shell shock after his military service and spent the last 15 years of his life in a psychiatric ward. He died in 1937, 85 years ago.All three composers of the recording "English Song: Never such innocence" experienced the horrors of World War I, the deaths of friends and colleagues. The regret over a lost innocence is reflected in their songs. Both Ralph Vaughan Williams and lesser-known composers George Butterworth and Ivor Bertie Gurney fought in the First World War. More relevant today than ever, the recording links three different composers' biographies, which for two of them came to an abrupt end with the onset of the Great War. Butterworth was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Gurney suffered from shell shock after his military service and spent the last 15 years of his life in a psychiatric ward. He completed his Bachelor's as well as Master's studies (Artistic Training Piano) at the Ionian University of Music Corfu with Prof. Lambis Vassiliadis. After successfully passing the entrance examination, he was admitted to study soloist training at the State University of Music Trossingen and completed his piano studies in the class of Prof. Tomislav Nedelkovic-Baynov with the concert exam. Karagiannis also studied Master Chamber Music at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media with Prof. Markus Becker and Lied composition with Prof. Jan-Philip Schulze. Karagiannis is a prize winner of various national and international competitions. He also performs regularly as a soloist or chamber musician and has already performed in various cities and festivals in Greece as well as in Germany, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria and Thailand.
