Schubert's first draft shows how the thirty-one-year-old worked on these works simultaneously; also, the counting of B flat major as Sonata No. 3 is by Schubert's hand. The sonatas are thus cyclically arranged by the composer and have many compositional similarities. Schubert dedicated this triad to his famous contemporary, the virtuoso pianist and Mozart student Johann Nepomuk Hummel. However, it was not published until 1839 - 11 years after Schubert's death, by which time Hummel had already passed away, and so the dedication was transferred to Robert Schumann by the publisher Diabelli & Co. While the Impromptus or Moments musicaux were always very popular, the sonatas led a shadowy existence for a long time. In both sonatas we experience a wealth of different characters and contrasting emotions. The arc of tension leads from the greatest brightness to the deepest darkness, from powerful verve and chromatic turmoil in the Allegro of the A major Sonata to cantabile immersion and tenderness in the Molto moderato of B flat major. In the slow movements - the F minor Andantino in A major as well as the Andante sostenuto in C sharp minor in B flat major - a shattering sadness seizes us - indeed we experience deepest resignation and mental abyss. With his 1729 sonata collection, Andre Cheron (1695-1766) cultivates the "Corelli" notation, which was so highly regarded in the French Regence. Ensemble Matis is made up of young musicians of various nationalities who originally met at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya in Barcelona, and ultimately came together to form the current group at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel. Since the ensemble's inception in the autumn of 2012, they have worked together intensively in formations contingent on the repertoire and have attempted to share and expand upon their experiences in their joint music-making. With Japan, Switzerland, and South Kroea, many different cultures are represented in the ensemble, which enriches and consistently makes the collaboration exciting. The new album by the Zurich Chamber Singers is dedicated to this beautiful repertoire, combining Passiontide and funeral music of the English and German Renaissance and Baroque with the newly commissioned piece 'De profundis' by the American composer Kevin Hartnett. Henry Purcell composed 'Funeral Sentences' in 1694 as three burial anthems from earlier drafts. These were performed as part of the royal funeral of Queen Mary II in the same year. All three are settings of texts from the funeral rites of the Book of Common Prayer. Not enough information survives about Bach's 'Jesu, meine Freude' to know whether it was indeed a particular funeral for which this motet was written; yet it has many features of German funeral music of that time. It's eleven sections are organized by choral settings of the hymn "Jesu, meine Freude" over a sacred poem by Johann Cruger. Kevin Hartnett's piece 'De profundis' was written as a commission from the Zurich Chamber Singers and was first performed in 2016 in the chapel adjoining the Grossmunster church in Zurich. As composers, they succeeded in creating their own musical style from elements of Chilean and European musical traditions.At the beginning of the 19th century, Chile opened up to the music of foreign composers. In particular, the romantic musical tradition of Europe influenced the national musical identity from then on. This album embarks on a musical search for traces of the connections between the European musical style and Chile's folkloric, nostalgic and patriotic music. It is the time of romanticism in literature, painting and music, which discovers the country and it's people and travel, and more and more dissolves the traditional rules of artistic demarcation.
