Over the wood Gofriller laid the most supple varnish, which often seems to have no substance at all but is steeped into the wood, turning it a deep burgundy colour. This violin appears to show the clear influence of the great master, with arching close to Amati’s late style and f-holes showing Rugeri’s personal interpretation of an Amati model. Conversely, the head seems to anticipate the work of Carlo Bergonzi, some decades later. A fascinating violin by a highly regarded Cremonese maker. Includes measurements ‘The violin looks slender and smart, in spite of its normal dimensions. The body outline is very similar to the large model used by Nicolo: the grand pattern.
