Ragtime Mandolin A Collection of Cakewalks, Rags, Slow Drags, and Foxtrots from the Gilded Age【電子書籍】[ Joseph Weidlich ]

(Fretted). The popularity of the mandolin in the United States between 1885-1915 led to the formation of many regional mandolin orchestras and mandolin clubs across the country, particularly in the urban areas of the Northeast and Midwest, but also as far west as San Francisco and as far south as New Orleans, e.g., the Tulane University Mandolin Club. In fact, Scott Joplin dedicated one of his early rags, "The Entertainer," to his local mandolin club in Sedalia, Missouri, i.e., to "Mr. James Brown and his mandolin club." So tune up your mandolin and enjoy playing the music that would have been heard in the neighborhood dance halls and feel like you're back in the Gilded Age! Each song in this collection is arranged for mandolin in staff notation and mandolin tablature with chord symbols.

Arkansas’s Gilded Age The Rise, Decline, and Legacy of Populism and Working-Class Protest【電子書籍】[ Matthew Hild ]

This book is the first devoted entirely to an examination of working-class activism, broadly defined as that of farmers’ organizations, labor unions, and (often biracial) political movements, in Arkansas during the Gilded Age. On one level, Hild argues for the significance of this activism in its own time: had the Arkansas Democratic Party not resorted to undemocratic, unscrupulous, and violent means of repression, the Arkansas Union Labor Party would have taken control of the state government in the election of 1888. He also argues that the significance of these movements lasted beyond their own time, their influence extending into the biracial Southern Tenant Farmers’ Union of the 1930s, the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and even today’s Farmers’ Union and the United Mine Workers of America.

The story of farmer and labor protest in Arkansas during the late nineteenth century offers lessons relevant to contemporary
working-class Americans in what some observers have called the “new Gilded Age.”

Sanctuary Exploring Wealth, Gender, and Betrayal in Gilded Age New York City【電子書籍】[ Edith Wharton ]

In "Sanctuary," Edith Wharton explores the complexities of human relationships against the backdrop of social hypocrisy and moral decay in post-World War I America. Edith Wharton, an eminent American novelist and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, often drew upon her own privileged background and extensive social circle for insights into the lives and struggles of her characters. "Sanctuary" reflects her deep concern for human existential crises and personal integrity amid societal constraints. Readers seeking a masterful exploration of the human psyche intertwined with incisive social critique will find "Sanctuary" to be an essential read. Galahad in the Gilded Age: A Life of George William Curtis【電子書籍】[ Linda Dowling ]

Galahad in the Gilded Age is the story of George William Curtis, regarded at the beginning of his career as little more than a handsome, amusing young man from a socially prominent family. His life would change dramatically after four years traveling in Europe and the Levant, from which he returned to find himself a literary celebrityー“the Howadji”ーfollowing the appearance of two books describing his Middle East experiences that some considered so provocatively sensuous as to border on obscenity. Yet during this early celebrity, Curtis would find his life changing profoundlyーdiscovering marital happiness, facing financial bankruptcy and finding himself irresistibly drawn into increasingly bitter controversies: the national battle against slavery, against wide-spreading political corruption, and against what Curtis regarded as a wholly unreasonable resistance to granting women the right to vote. George William Curtis, a contemporary would conclude after his death, was “the best knight of our time.”

The Freedom of the Streets Work, Citizenship, and Sexuality in a Gilded Age City【電子書籍】[ Sharon E. Wood ]

Gilded Age cities offered extraordinary opportunities to women ー but at a price. As clerks, factory hands, and professionals flocked downtown to earn a living, they alarmed social critics and city fathers, who warned that self-supporting women were just steps away from becoming prostitutes. With in-depth research possible only in a mid-sized city, Sharon E. Wood focuses on Davenport, Iowa, to explore the lives of working women and the prostitutes who shared their neighborhoods.

The single, self-supporting women who migrated to Davenport in the years following the Civil War saw paid labor as the foundation of citizenship. They took up the tools of public and political life to assert the respectability of paid employment and to confront the demon of prostitution. Wood offers cradle-to-grave portraits of individual girls and women ー both prostitutes and “respectable” white workers ー seeking to reshape their city and expand women’s opportunities. As Wood demonstrates, however, their efforts to rewrite the sexual politics of the streets met powerful resistance at every turn from men defending their political rights and sexual power.

New York’s Scoundrels, Scalawags, and Scrappers The City in the Last Decade of the Gilded Age【電子書籍】[ John Tauranac ]

The 1890s was the tail end of the Gilded Age. It was not a “Golden Age,” it was a veneer, and although the decade is specifically called “The Gay Nineties,” the gaiety was generally reserved for the top ten percenters. If you were a common working stiffーor worse, a common working “stiffette”ーlife was not so gay. Most New Yorkers played by the rules of the game, although some fudged a bit. Others, along with the managements of some businesses and some administrations of the municipality, played by totally different rules, successfully gaming the system to their advantage. The few who fought for truth and justice generally went down fighting. Tramps & Trade Union Travelers Internal Migration and Organized Labor in Gilded Age America, 1870?1900【電子書籍】[ Kim Moody ]

From the author of On New Terrain, a historical examination of why American workers never organized in early industrial America and what it means today.

Why has there been no viable, independent labor party in the United States? Many people assert “American exceptionalist” arguments, which state a lack of class-consciousness and union tradition among American workers is to blame. While the racial, ethnic, and gender divisions within the American working class have created organizational challenges for the working class, Moody uses archival research to argue that despite their divisions, workers of all ethnic and racial groups in the Gilded Age often displayed high levels of class consciousness and political radicalism.

In place of “American exceptionalism,” Moody contends that high levels of internal migration during the late 1800s created instability in the union and political organizations of workers. Because of the tumultuous conditions brought on by the uneven industrialization of early American capitalism, millions of workers became migrants, moving from state to state and city to city. The organizational weakness that resulted undermined efforts by American workers to build independent labor-based parties in the 1880s and 1890s. Using detailed research and primary sources, Moody traces how it was that “pure-and-simple” unionism would triumph by the end of the century despite the existence of a significant socialist minority in organized labor at that time.

“Terrific . . . An entirely original take on . . . why American labor was virtually unique in failing to build its own political party. But there’s much more: in investigating labor migration and the ‘tramp’ phenomenon in the Gilded Age, he discovers fascinating parallels with today's struggles of immigrant workers.” ーMike Davis, author of Prisoners of the American Dream

William C. Brocklesby: A Connecticut Valley Architect in the Gilded Age【電子書籍】[ Bill Ranauro ]

The late nineteenth century, known commonly as the "Gilded Age," produced some of the most beautiful yet controversial architecture in America's history. The great influencers of the period, including Richard Upjohn, Henry Hobson Richardson, and Charles McKim, each spread the gospel of his own architectural style. The result was an eclectic mix of styles that some detested but that others embraced. Caught in the struggle to find an architecture America could claim as its own, Hartford, Connecticut architect William Brocklesby carved out his own stylistic path. In an age when the taste for ostentation and pretension was adopted by many, William Brocklesby produced some of the most dignified and beautiful architecture in the Connecticut Valley. His churches, libraries, and theaters remain as artistic landmarks throughout western New England, and his work at colleges from Hartford to Amherst, Massachusetts make for some of the most picturesque college campuses in America. This book serves as a companion to the author's earlier book, Asher Benjamin, American Architect, Author, Artist. Taken together, the two books provide a view of developments in American architecture from 1790 to 1910.

The Architecture of William C. Brocklesby

Hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, architect William C. Brocklesby (1847-1910) spent his career designing beautiful yet dignified churches, libraries, and public buildings throughout the Connecticut River Valley and western New England. Working in an age when ostentation was the rule rather than the exception, Brocklesby maintained a restrained hand in the application of ornament. His design ofForbes Library in Northampton, Massachusetts stands out as a monument to his ability as a design architect.

In addition, William Brocklesby was among a handful of nineteenth century architects who made the Connecticut River Valley the birthplace of the prototypical American college campus. Working largely within the vision of the famed American landscape architects Andrew Jackson Downing and Frederick Law Olmstead, Brocklesby and others built campuses that were meant to mimic the traditional New England village.

“Through the designs of the college buildings by Peabody and Stearns and William Brocklesby, Smith College's architectural history traces the development of late nineteenth-century styles.”

- National Register of Historic Places Inventory

Literature and Inequality Nine Perspectives from the Napoleonic Era through the First Gilded Age【電子書籍】[ Daniel Shaviro ]

Today, high-end inequality in America and peer countries is at Gilded Age levels. These matters are too important and complicated to be left just to economists. A broader sociological and humanistic approach is necessary. Great works of literature, such as those by the likes of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and Edith Wharton, are among the resources that can help us to better understand high-end inequality’s broader, culturally contingent, ramifications ? not just in the authors’ own eras but today.

Daniel Shaviro’s Literature and Inequality offers a unique and accessible interdisciplinary take on how a number of great and beloved works from the nineteenth- and early-twentieth centuries help shed light on modern high-end inequality. In particular, Shaviro helps us to understand the relevance both of cultural differences between America and peer countries such as England and France, and of cultural commonalities between America’s First Gilded Age in the late-nineteenth century and its currently ongoing Second Gilded Age.

Fueling the Gilded Age Railroads, Miners, and Disorder in Pennsylvania Coal Country【電子書籍】[ Andrew B. Arnold ]

If the railroads won the Gilded Age, the coal industry lost it. Railroads epitomized modern management, high technology, and vast economies of scale. By comparison, the coal industry was embarrassingly primitive. Miners and operators dug coal, bought it, and sold it in 1900 in the same ways that they had for generations. In the popular imagination, coal miners epitomized anti-modern forces as the so-called “Molly Maguire” terrorists.

Yet the sleekly modern railroads were utterly dependent upon the disorderly coal industry. Railroad managers demanded that coal operators and miners accept the purely subordinate role implied by their status. They refused.

Fueling the Gilded Age shows how disorder in the coal industry disrupted the strategic plans of the railroads. It does so by expertly intertwining the history of two industriesーrailroads and coal miningーthat historians have generally examined from separate vantage points. It shows the surprising connections between railroad management and miner organizing; railroad freight rate structure and coal mine operations; railroad strategy and strictly local legal precedents. It combines social, economic, and institutional approaches to explain the Gilded Age from the perspective of the relative losers of history rather than the winners. It beckons readers to examine the still-unresolved nature of America’s national conundrum: how to reconcile the competing demands of national corporations, local businesses, and employees.

The Roots of Violent Crime in America From the Gilded Age through the Great Depression【電子書籍】[ Barry Latzer ]

The Roots of Violent Crime in America is criminologist Barry Latzer’s comprehensive analysis of crimes of violenceーincluding murder, assault, and rapeーin the United States from the 1880s through the 1930s. Combining the theoretical perspectives and methodological rigor of criminology with a synthesis of historical scholarship as well as original research and analysis, Latzer challenges conventional thinking about violent crime of this era.

While scholars have traditionally cast American cities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as dreadful places, Latzer suggests that despite overcrowding and poverty, U.S. cities enjoyed low rates of violent crime, especially when compared to rural areas. The rural South and the thinly populated West both suffered much higher levels of brutal crime than the metropolises of the East and Midwest. Latzer deemphasizes racism and bigotry as causes of violence during this period, noting that while many social groups confronted significant levels of discrimination and abuse, only some engaged in high levels of violent crime. Cultural predispositions and subcultures of violence, he posits, led some groups to participate more frequently in violent activity than others. He also argues that the prohibition on alcohol in the 1920s did not drive up rates of violent crime. Though the bootlegger wars contributed considerably to the murder rate in some of America’s largest municipalities, Prohibition also eliminated saloons, which served as hubs of vice, corruption, and lawlessness.

The Roots of Violent Crime in America stands as a sweeping reevaluation of the causes of crimes of violence in the United States between the Gilded Age and World War II, compelling readers to rethink enduring assumptions on this contentious topic.

Presidential Leadership in Feeble Times Explaining Executive Power in the Gilded Age【電子書籍】[ Mark Zachary Taylor ]

Do presidents matter for America's economic performance? We tend to stereotype the Gilded Age presidents of the late nineteenth century as weak. We also assume that the American people were intellectually misguided about the economy and the government's role in it during this era. And we generally dismiss the Gilded Age macro-economy as boring--little interesting or important happened. Instead, the micro-economics of the business world was where the action was located. More broadly, many economists and political scientists believe that individual presidents do not matter much, even in the twenty-first century. Institutional constraints and historical circumstance dictate success or failure; the White House is just along for the ride. In Presidential Leadership in Feeble Times, Mark Zachary Taylor shows that all of this is mistaken. Taylor tells the story of three decades of Gilded Age economic upheaval with a focus on presidential leadership--why did some presidents crash and burn, while others prospered? It turns out that neither education nor experience mattered much. Nor did brains, personal ethics, or party affiliation. Instead, differences in presidential vision and leadership style had dramatic consequences. And even in this unlikely period, presidents powerfully affected national economic performance and their success came from surprising sources, with important lessons for us today.

The first modern biography of financial pioneer and philanthropist W. W. Corcoran

Before the Gilded Age reveals the extraordinary ways in which W. W. Corcoran shaped the emerging cultural elite and changed the capital and the country both for better and for worse. A complex and controversial character, Corcoran influenced banking and finance, art and American culture, philanthropy, and the nation’s capital.

Based on extensive archival research, Before the Gilded Age examines the fascinating life of an entrepreneur ahead of his time. A generation before Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller donated vast sums of money, Corcoran gave away most of his fortune and helped shape American philanthropy. His dedication to landscaping the emerging National Mall predates plans for New York’s Central Park. Other legacies included cofounding the Riggs Bank and founding the Corcoran Gallery of Art, whose collection has been dispersed among other arts organizations in Washington, DC, including the National Gallery of Art.

Mark L. Goldstein provides a colorful account of a political chameleon who successfully transcended political party, geography, and ideology to become one of the richest and most influential people in the country even as he navigated such controversies as rumors that he was linked to plots to kill President Lincoln. Before the Gilded Age also offers readers a detailed historical perspective on the development of banking, investing, lobbying, art collecting, and philanthropy.

Despite overwhelming witness testimony that the Creole beauty from New Orleans had purchased the arsenic that killed him, Minnie's own testimony brought the entire courtroom to tears. She was acquitted. Minnie returned to New Orleans with James Walkup's fortune, life insurance, Civil War pension, and all the expensive clothes she had shipped home before he even died.

Minnie still didn't have enough cash for her liking, so she successfully targeted, seduced, and murdered two more wealthy older men while evading justice in the courtroom (and escaping her lawyer's fees, too). How to Murder Your Three Lovers and Get Away with It is an extraordinary and off-the-wall true story of intrigue, scandal, and murder.

President-Making in the Gilded Age The Nominating Conventions of 1876-1900【電子書籍】[ Stan M. Haynes ]

Nominating conventions were the highlight of presidential elections in the Gilded Age, an era when there were no primaries, no debates and nominees did little active campaigning. Unlike modern conventions, the outcomes were not so seemingly predetermined.

Historians consider the late 19th century an era of political corruption, when party bosses controlled the conventions and chose the nominees. Yet the candidates nominated by both Republicans and Democrats during this period won despite the opposition of the bosses, and were opposed by them once in office.

This book analyzes the pageantry, drama, speeches, strategies, platforms, deal-making and often surprising outcomes of the presidential nominating conventions of the Gilded Age, debunking many wildely-held beliefs about politics in a much-maligned era.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I had a career because the all-male board at my junior-year college decided to replace our brilliant but decidedly masculine headmistress with a woman who was in the process of eclipsing her in the affections of her lover. #2 Benji, a journalist, was 19 years old when he was assigned to cover the story of an all-male college board’s decision to replace its headmistress with a woman. He had none of the typical reactions, but instead threw on clothes and drove to the school. #3 A woman tried to kill her boyfriend, a cardiologist, because he had developed a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that he mailed free of charge to anyone who asked. #4 Tarnower’s book thanked Jean Harris for her splendid assistance in the research and writing of this book.
