|

Creative outlets can be a source of immense joy and satisfaction in our lives, but the question remains: is creativity something that is innate within us, or must it be learned?

God the Artist is a three-part, step-by-step guide to pottery making and how it relates to Christianity. It provides a clear understanding of the references to pottery in the Bible, where they originate from and why they are significant to every Christian’s life. It concisely interprets these pottery references in their original context, while explaining Biblical ceramic symbolism in a conversational way. Through insightful commentary on The Potter's House in Jeremiah 18, as well as other pottery references from the Old and New Testaments, God the Artist proves that all people are inherently creative because all human beings are made in the image of God, the ultimate creator.

Each chapter is reinforced with a Creativity Challenge designed to encourage pottery pros, admirers, and anyone seeking to expand their creative capacity and strengthen their spiritual practice, to grow closer to God as they progress on their journey. With the help of this guide, individuals will gain a deeper understanding of the creativity given to them by God and how to use it to honor and glorify Him.

British Pottery: The First 3000 Years Ceramic Art in the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age【電子書籍】[ Alex Gibson ]
|

First comprehensive account of the sequence, development and use of early prehistoric pottery in over 20 years.

Pottery was at the heart of the ‘Neolithic package’ appearing in Britain with the first farmers around 4000 BC. It arrived as a mature technology and was essential to the new, largely sedentary, lifestyle and economy. It transformed storage and cooking practices, and the earliest ceramics seem to have been essential equipment in the new practice of dairying. The pottery changed over time and, as a result, ceramics have been fundamental to the construction of relative chronologies since the early days of modern archaeology. Even with the development of absolute dating techniques, the role of pottery as a dating tool has not diminished but instead has become refined and more accurate.

But pottery is not just a tool to dating the past ? it also represents a facet of prehistoric art and expression. Starting simply, ceramics became arguably the main medium for display with designs often of great complexity. Simple techniques, motifs and panels are combined to create highly decorated vessels often of great individuality. The use of inlays, pastes and slips added contrasting colors to these vibrant designs.

By the end of the Neolithic, ceramics became one of the major grave goods of British Prehistory, acting as accompaniments to those that warranted formal burial whether by inhumation or cremation. This practice continued throughout the Early Bronze Age to the extents that, lacking contemporary domestic sites, most of the corpora of Early Bronze Age ceramics are largely sepulchral in context. As we increasingly realize that burial rituals may have been varied and complex, so the roles of these ceramics are becoming increasingly questioned.

This book traces the 3000 years of ceramic use and development in Britain, charting the changing forms and decorative techniques and the differing and changing roles that pottery played within its contemporary society.

Pre-Mamom Pottery Variation and the Preclassic Origins of the Lowland Maya【
|

Pre-Mamom Pottery Variation and the Preclassic Origins of the Lowland Maya summarizes archaeological researchers’ current views on the adoption and first use of pottery across the Maya lowlands. Covering the early Middle Preclassic period, when communities began using and producing pottery for the first time (roughly 1000?600 BC), through to the establishment of a recognizably Maya tradition, termed the Mamom ceramic sphere (about 600?300 BC), the book demonstrates that the adoption was broadly contemporary, with variation in how the new technology was adapted locally.

Analyzing ceramics found at sites in Belize, Pet?n (Guatemala), and Mexico, the contributors provide evidence that the pre-Mamom expansion of pottery resulted from increased dependence on maize agriculture, exploitation of limestone caprock, and greater reliance on a preexisting system of long-distance exchange. The chapters describe the individual experiences of new potting communities at various sites across the region. They are supplemented by appendixes presenting key chronological data as well as the principal types and varieties of pre-Mamom ceramic complexes across the various spheres: Xe, Eb, Swasey, Cunil, and Ek.

A significant amount of new material has been excavated in the last decade, changing what is known about the early Middle Preclassic period and making Pre-Mamom Pottery Variation and the Preclassic Origins of the Lowland Maya a first read of the early ceramic prehistory of the Maya lowlands. It will be a valuable resource for students and scholars interested in the archaeology of the Maya lowlands, Mesoamerican social complexity, and ceramic technology.

Contributors: E.
The Red and the Black covers the major stages in the history of Greek pottery production, both figured and plain, as they are understood today. It provides an up-to-date evaluation of ways of studying Greek pottery and encourages new approaches.
There is a detailed analysis of the subject matter of figured scenes covering some of the main preoccupations of ancient Greece: myth, fantasy and everyday life. Furthermore, it sets the artefacts in the context of the societies that produced them, highlighting the social, art historical, mythological and economic information that can be revealed from their study.
This volume also covers a hitherto neglected area: the history of the collecting of Greek pottery through the Renaissance and up to the present day. It shows how market values have gradually increased to the high prices of today and goes on to take a closer look at the enthusiasm of the collectors.

The Pottery Cottage Murders The terrifying true story of an escaped prisoner and the family he held hostage【電子書籍】[ Peter Howse ]
|

A psychopathic criminal on the run from prison. A family of five held hostage in their home. A frantic police manhunt across the snowbound Derbyshire moors. Just one survivor.

The definitive account of the terrifying 1977 Pottery Cottage murders that shocked Britain.

For three days, escaped prisoner Billy Hughes played macabre psychological games with Gill Moran and her family, keeping them in separate rooms of their home while secretly murdering them one by one. On several occasions Hughes ordered Gill and her husband Richard to leave the house for provisions, confident that they would return without betraying him in order to protect their loved ones.

Blizzards hampered the desperate police search, but they learned where the dangerous convict was hiding and closed in on the cottage. A high-speed car chase on icy roads ended with a crash and the killer being shot as he swung a newly sharpened axe at his final victim. This was Britain's first instance of police officers committing 'justifiable homicide' against an escapee.

The story of these terrible events is told here by Carol Ann Lee and Peter Howse, the former chief inspector who saved Gill Moran's life over forty years ago.

Peter's professional role has permitted access to witness statements, crime scene photographs and police reports. Peter Howse and Carol Ann Lee have made use of these, along with fresh interviews with many of those directly involved, to tell a fast-paced and truly shocking story with great insight and empathy.

Creativity in the Bronze Age Understanding Innovation in Pottery, Textile, and Metalwork Production【電子書籍】[ Lise Bender J?rgensen ]
|

Creativity is an integral part of human history, yet most studies focus on the modern era, leaving unresolved questions about the formative role that creativity has played in the past. This book explores the fundamental nature of creativity in the European Bronze Age. Considering developments in crafts that we take for granted today, such as pottery, textiles, and metalwork, the volume compares and contrasts various aspects of their development, from the construction of the materials themselves, through the production processes, to the design and effects deployed in finished objects. It explores how creativity is closely related to changes in material culture, how it directs responses to the new and unfamiliar, and how it has resulted in changes to familiar things and practices. Written by an international team of scholars, the case studies in this volume consider wider issues and provide detailed insights into creative solutions found in specific objects.

From their take on Hootie and the Blowfish records to hip biblical parables to the joys of home-schooling, they know what the kids are into, and they know how to relate to them like a couple of “awesome dudes.” Which is why Gideon and Jeremiah, aka God’s Pottery, are the perfect people to address the tough issues that plague the Youth of Todayーissues as complicated and troubling as rap music, speed dating (“the silent killer”), and the myth of “sexercise.”

What Would God’s Pottery Do? combines essays, photographs, frank confessionalsーnot to mention several clearly labeled “humor” sections!ーto help steer kids in the right direction, all while speaking their language. Gideon and Jeremiah are totally jazzed to reach out and touch the youth using their trademark blend of people skills and biblical know-how. Though aimed primarily at adolescents, What Would God’s Pottery Do? contains life lessons for students of any age (except old people)!

Many cynics out there claim that God’s Pottery is not really a Christian duo but rather a brilliantly executed parody. Ancient Pottery, Cuisine, and Society at the Northern Great Lakes【電子書籍】[ Susan M. Kooiman ]
|

This innovative archaeological study of diet and cooking technology sheds light on ancient cuisine.

Ancient cuisine is one of the hot topics in today’s archaeology. This book explores changing settlement and subsistence in the Northern Great Lakes from the perspective of food-processing technology and cooking. Susan Kooiman examines precontact Indigenous pottery from the Cloudman site on Drummond Island on the far eastern end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to investigate both how pottery technology, pottery use, diet, and cooking habits change over time and how these changes relate to hypothesized transitions in subsistence, settlement, and social patterns among Indigenous pottery-making groups in this area.

Kooiman demonstrates that ceramic technology and cooking techniques evolved to facilitate new subsistence and processing needs. Her interpretations of past cuisine and culinary identities are further supported and enhanced through comparisons with ethnographic and ethnohistoric accounts of local Indigenous cooking and diet. The complementary nature of these diverse methods demonstrates a complex interplay of technology, environment, and social relationships, and underscores the potential applications of such an analytic suite to long-standing questions in the Northern Great Lakes and other archaeological contexts worldwide. This clearly written book will interest students and scholars of archaeology and anthropology, as well as armchair archaeologists who want to learn more about Indigenous/Native American studies, food studies and cuisine, pottery, cooking, and food history.

Prehistoric Textile Fabrics Of The United States Derived From Impressions On Pottery【電子書籍】[ William Henry Holmes ]
|

Prehistoric Textile Fabrics of the United States, Derived from Impressions on Pottery by William Henry Holmes is a detailed study on the ancient textile patterns and techniques of early Native American societies, as preserved through impressions found on pottery. Holmes, a prominent anthropologist, explores how these imprints provide valuable insights into the textile traditions of prehistoric cultures in North America, particularly in regions like the Ohio Valley and the Mississippi River area.Holmes begins by explaining the unique methodology of studying textile impressions on pottery. Since actual textile artifacts from these prehistoric periods have largely disintegrated over time, impressions left on the soft clay of pottery vessels during the shaping process provide a rare glimpse into the fabric techniques, such as weaving, plaiting, and netting. Holmes meticulously documents these impressions, providing visual reconstructions and detailed analyses of the patterns and designs.

Prehistory and protohistory of ancient civilizations | The geographic definition of the Turkish Eastern Mediterranean includes Cilicia, Amuq and the Aksu-Euphrates valley, which show similar characteristics within the Late Neolithic period. In the Turkish East Mediterranean, the excavations carried out at Sak?ag?z?, Yumuktepe, Tell al-Judaidah, Tell Kurdu and Carchemish have shown they were key sites for the Near Eastern Late Neolithic period. In the publications issued until now, the results of the ongoing Domuztepe excavations, one of these sites in the region considered, have been assessed within Mesopotamian archaeology. Located in the northern part of this geographic region, Domuztepe was excavated by a British-American team in 1996-2012, and since 2013, a Turkish team took the work over. In this study, the general characteristics of the Late Neolithic Pottery uncovered during the 2014-2015 seasons at Domuztepe are analysed in the framework of the cultural developments in the Turkish Eastern Mediterranean.

Pottery Craft of the Yakut【電子書籍】[ Richard L. Bland ]
|

This book offered to the reader’s attention is an ethnographic study devoted to the traditional pottery of Yakutia. The author, A. A. Savvin, collected materials for the book during field research in 1939?1941, when ceramic tableware had largely already lost its former role in the household way of the Yakuts. But the skills for its manufacture were still preserved in certain localities. Savvin managed to document the last “living” evidence of a craft that had a centuries-old history and established traditions. It is noteworthy that the research conducted by Savvin was a scientific project in the modern sense of the term. It was carefully planned and executed in accordance with a pre-written program, which is also included in this edition. The sources of information were not only direct observations of the working processes of the production of ceramic tableware but also conversations-interviews with potters, memoirs of representatives of the older generation. A special layer of research consisted of materials of folklore, folk beliefs, and customs related to pottery.

This edited volume provides a full report on the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A site of WF16, southern Jordan. Very few sites of PPNA date have been excavated using modern methods, so this report makes a very significant contribution to our understanding of this period. Excavations have shown that the site contains a highly dynamic use of architecture, and the faunal assemblage reveals new information on the processes that lead to the domestication of the goat.

Ancient Pottery of the Mississippi Valley: Fourth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1882-83【電子書籍】[ William Henry Holmes ]

This paper is the third of a series of preliminary studies of aboriginal ceramic art which are intended to be absorbed into a final work of a comprehensive character. The groups of relics selected for these studies are in all cases of limited extent, and are such as can lay claim to a considerable degree of completeness. It is true that no series of arch?ologic objects can ever be considered complete, but in exceptional cases the sources of supply may be so thoroughly explored that the development of new features of importance cannot reasonably be expected. If any series of American ceramic products has reached such a condition, it is that of the middle portions of the Mississippi Valley; yet, even in this case, I consider it unwise to attempt a monographic study, and prefer to single out a particular collection, making it the subject of a thorough investigation. When the idea of preparing such a paper was first conceived, the collection presenting the greatest advantages was that of the Academy of Natural Sciences at Davenport, Iowa, which was, therefore, chosen. Other museums, especially those at Cambridge, Saint Louis, and Washington, were rich in material from this region, but none of these collections were so homogeneous and satisfactory. The National Museum has recently received important accessions from the Mississippi Valley, through the agency of the Bureau of Ethnology, and ere the publication of this paper will probably excel all others in the number and variety of its mound relics. Some of its material has already been published by Dr. Charles Rau, Prof. C. C. Jones, Dr. Joseph Jones, and myself, and several additional examples are given in this paper

Art, Pottery, and the Clay-Human Connection Understanding the Prophet Whom God Has Set in the Church!【電子書籍】[ Dr. Alvin Haywood, Ed.D. ]

Art, Pottery, and the Clay-Human Connection

Understanding the Prophet Whom God Has Set in the Church!

Dr. Alvin Haywood, Ed.D.

Calling all faithful and committed men and women of God whose number one priority is to walk unapologetically in their God-given calling and purpose for their life. This book is for any dedicated servant of God but is especially geared toward those who are single and walking in a prophetic calling. Married folks, and others walking in any calling from God, can also benefit from this book--those who want to further review the clay-human connection and understand more about the trials and triumphs of a prophet of God. Like clay in a potter's hand, God's people are molded and shaped in his hands. Nestled in a beautiful narrative setting of art, history, and pottery, Art, Pottery, and the Clay-Human Connection: Understanding the Prophet Whom God Has Set in the Church is based on and embedded in relevant and applicable scriptures as it validates and encourages any servant of God to concentrate on what the Word of God is saying about them in their walk with God. Jeremiah the prophet is used as a focal point as he was singularly called by God to go down to the potter's house to receive a prophetic message about this clay-human connection for the church or the people of God.

The Transformation of Athens Painted Pottery and the Creation of Classical Greece【電子書籍】[ Robin Osborne ]
|

How remarkable changes in ancient Greek pottery reveal the transformation of classical Greek culture

Why did soldiers stop fighting, athletes stop competing, and lovers stop having graphic sex in classical Greek art? The scenes depicted on Athenian pottery of the mid-fifth century BC are very different from those of the late sixth century. Did Greek potters have a different world to seeーor did they come to see the world differently? In this lavishly illustrated and engagingly written book, Robin Osborne argues that these remarkable changes are the best evidence for the shifting nature of classical Greek culture.

Osborne examines the thousands of surviving Athenian red-figure pots painted between 520 and 440 BC and describes the changing depictions of soldiers and athletes, drinking parties and religious occasions, sexual relations, and scenes of daily life. He shows that it was not changes in each activity that determined how the world was shown, but changes in values and aesthetics.

By demonstrating that changes in artistic style involve choices about what aspects of the world we decide to represent as well as how to represent them, this book rewrites the history of Greek art. By showing that Greeks came to see the world differently over the span of less than a century, it reassesses the history of classical Greece and of Athenian democracy. And by questioning whether art reflects or produces social and political change, it provokes a fresh examination of the role of images in an ever-evolving world.

The Emergence of Pottery in West Asia【
|

Over the past fifty years or so early pottery complexes in the wider region of West Asia have hardly ever been investigated in their own right. Early ceramics have often been unexpected by-products of projects focussing upon much earlier aceramic or later prehistoric periods. In recent years, however, there has been a tremendous increase in research in various parts of West Asia focusing explicitly on this theme. It had generally become accepted that the adoption of pottery in West Asia happened relatively late in the history of ceramics. Several regions are now believed to have developed pottery significantly earlier. Thus, pottery occurs in Eastern Russia, in China and Japan by 16,500 cal. BC and in north Africa it is known in the 10th millennium. However, while the East Asian examples in particular do mark chronologically earlier instances, the picture in West Asia is actually rather more complex, in part because of the tyranny of the Aceramic/Ceramic Neolithic chronology. For the first time, The Emergence of Pottery in West Asia examines in detail the when, where, how and why pottery first arrived in the region? A key insight that emerges is that we must not confuse the reasons for pottery adoption with the long-term consequences. Neolithic peoples in West Asia did not adopt pottery because of the many uses and functions it would gain many centuries later and the development of ceramic technology needs to be examined in the context of its original cultural and social milieu.

The Kyrenia Ship Final Excavation Report, Volume I History of the Excavation, Amphoras, Pottery and Coins as Evidence for Dating【
|

The Kyrenia Ship, a Greek merchantman built around 315 BC, which sank off the north coast of Cyprus, was excavated between 1968 and 1972 under the direction of Michael L. Katzev of the University of Pennsylvania and Oberlin College. The importance of this ship lies in the exceptionally well-preserved hull that provided new insights into ancient shipbuilding, as well as the cargo it carried. The hold was stacked with transport amphoras of various types made on Rhodes, with a few examples from Samos, Kos, Knidos and Cyprus (?), supplemented by a consignment of millstones, iron billets and almonds.

The cabin pottery from Rhodes also suggests this was the vessel’s home port, a conclusion supported by most of the scientific ceramic analyses. Its trade route included Rhodes, Cyprus and the Levant with perhaps Egypt as a final destination.

This volume provides a detailed history of the excavation followed by definitive studies of the amphora cargo and the pottery associated with shipboard life. Some of the amphora stamps suggest that the ship sank between 294 and 291 BC, dates corroborated by the cabin wares. The repetition of four drinking cups (kantharoi), oil containers (gutti), wine measures (olpai), as well as bowls and saucers, suggests that the ship was sailed by a crew of four. Seven bronze coins were recovered, five minted in the name of Alexander the Great and one well-known type of Ptolemy I produced only on Cyprus.
