The British Consular Service in the Aegean and the Collection of Antiquities for the British Museum【電子書籍】[ Lucia Patrizio Gunning ]
|

The book tells the story of how the British consular service in the Aegean, in the years of the British protectorate of the Ionian Islands (1815-1864) became an agency for the retrieval, excavation and collection of antiquities eventually destined for the British Museum. Exploring the historical, political and diplomatic circumstances that allowed the consular service to develop from a chartered company into a state run institution under the direction of the Foreign Office, it provides a unique perspective on the intersection of state policy, private ambition, and the collecting of antiquities. Drawing extensively on consular correspondence, the study sets out several challenges to current views. For those interested in the history of travel in the Levant, or more generally in the Grand Tour, the book presents an alternative point of view that challenges the travellers' descriptions of the region. The book also intersects with British diplomatic history, providing an insight into the consuls in both their official and private circumstances, and comparing their situation under the Levant Company with that of the Foreign Office run consular service. The complex political situation in the Aegean at the time of the take over of the service is examined along with the political and commercial roles of the consuls, their daily dealings with the Greeks and Ionians, and also with the Ottoman authorities. Through private correspondence, it shows how the consuls' reflected the belief that Greek, Egyptian, Babylonian, Roman and other antiquities would be better looked after in a British, French, German or American museum, than by the people, and in the countries, they were created for. In particular, the book illuminates the public/private nature of the consuls' role, the way they worked with, but independently of, government, and it reveals how Britain was able to acquire major pieces of sculpture from the nineteenth century Aegean.

The Island of the Pope Catholics in the Aegean Archipelago between Empire and Nation-State, 1770-1830【電子書籍】[ Dimitris Kousouris ]
|

For the Aegean island of Syros, the Greek Revolution (1821-1832) marked a significant turning point. Known as “the island of the Pope”, due to its Catholic majority, Syros transformed into a major commercial hub, seemingly triggering the withdrawal of its indigenous Latin community. Juxtaposing the view from the Archipelago with that from Istanbul, the Peloponnese, Rome, Paris and Vienna, this volume revisits the island’s history. From early encounters between native inhabitants and groups from across the Ottoman Levant, to how the Latin community navigated conflict and change during the Greek War of Independence, this book offers new insights into the political, cultural and social history of the region.

Beyond Thalassocracies Understanding Processes of Minoanisation and Mycenaeanisation in the Aegean【
|

Beyond Thalassocracies aims to evaluate and rethink the manner in which archaeologists approach, understand, and analyze the various processes associated with culture change connected to interregional contact, using as a test case the world of the Aegean during the Late Bronze Age (c. 1600?1100 BC). The 14 chapters compare and contrast various aspects of the phenomena of Minoanisation and Mycenaeanisation, both of which share the basic underlying defining feature of material culture change in communities around the Aegean. This change was driven by trends manifesting themselves in the dominant palatial communities of each period of the Bronze Age. Over the past decade, our understanding of how these processes developed and functioned has changed considerably. Whereas current discussions on Minoanisation have already been informed by more recent theoretical trends, especially in material culture studies and postーcolonial theory, the process of Mycenaeanisation is still very much conceptualized along traditional lines of explanation. Since these phenomena occurred in chronological sequence, it makes sense that any reappraisal of their nature and significance should target those regions of the Aegean basin that were affected by both processes, highlighting their similarities and differences. Thus, in the present volume we focus on the southern and eastern Aegean, in particular the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and the north-eastern Aegean islands.

Invention and Innovation The Social Context of Technological Change 2: Egypt, the Aegean and the Near East, 1650-1150 B.C.【電子書籍】[ Janine Bourriau ]
|

In September 2002, a second workshop on the theme of the social context of technological change was held at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge. Discussion has been the core of these meetings so far, with the aim being to relate the results of the specialist investigator to broad historical questions concerning the nature and development of ancient societies. The papers presented here address a wider context: geographically, with the inclusion of the Aegean and thematically, with papers on natural products and raw materials. The time frame remains the same in covering the Late Bronze Age/New Kingdom. The majority of the papers draw on Egyptian evidence, and illustrate a multiplicity of approaches to the problems set by ancient technologies: modelling, methodology of art history and archaeology applied to a problematic group of artefacts, integration of archaeological and textual sources, and the application of the results of scientific analysis to illuminate ancient technology.

The New Frontiers of Freedom from the Alps to the Aegean【電子書籍】[ Edward Alexander Powell ]
|

Owing to the disturbed conditions which prevailed throughout most of southeastern Europe during the summer and autumn of 1919, the journey recorded in the following pages could not have been taken had it not been for the active cooperation of the Governments through whose territories we traveled and the assistance afforded by their officials and by the officers of their armies and navies, to say nothing of the hospitality shown us by American diplomatic and consular representatives, relief-workers and others. From the Alps to the ?gean, in Italy, Dalmatia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Turkey, Rumania, Hungary and Serbia we met with universal courtesy and kindness. For the innumerable courtesies which we were shown in Italy and the regions under Italian occupation I am indebted to His Excellency Francisco Nitti, Prime Minister of Italy, and to former Premier Orlando, to General Armando Diaz, Commander-in-Chief of the Italian Armies; to Lieutenant-General Albricci, Minister of War; to Admiral Thaon di Revel, Minister of Marine; to Vice-Admiral Count Enrice Mulo, Governor-General of Dalmatia; to Lieutenant-General Piacentini, Governor-General of Albania, to Lieutenant-General Montanari, commanding the Italian troops in Dalmatia; to Rear-Admiral Wenceslao Piazza, commanding the Italian forces in the Curzolane Islands; to Lieutenant-Colonel Antonio Chiesa, commanding the Italian troops in Montenegro; to Colonel Aldo Aymonino, Captain Marchese Piero Ricci and Captain Ernesto Tron of the Comando Supremo, the last-named being our companion and cicerone on a motor-journey of nearly three thousand miles; to Captain Roggieri of the Royal Italian Navy, Chief of Staff to the Governor-General of Dalmatia; to Captain Amedeo Acton, commanding the "Filiberto"; to Captain Fausto M. Leva, commanding the "Dandolo"; to Captain Giulio Menin, commanding the "Puglia," and to Captain Filipopo, commanding the "Ardente," all of whom entertained us with the hospitality so characteristic of the Italian Navy; to Lieutenant Giuseppe Castruccio, our cicerone in Rome and my companion on dirigible and airplane flights; to Lieutenant Bartolomeo Poggi and Engineer-Captain Alexander Ceccarelli, respectively commander and chief engineer of the destroyer "Sirio," both of whom, by their unfailing thoughtfulness and courtesy added immeasurably to the interest and enjoyment of our voyage down the Adriatic from Fiume to Valona; to Lieutenant Pellegrini di Tondo, our companion on the long journey by motor across Albania and Macedonia; to Lieutenant Morpurgo, who showed us many kindnesses during our stay in Salonika; to Baron San Martino of the Italian Peace Delegation; to Lieutenant Stroppa-Quaglia, attach? of the Italian Peace Delegation, and, above all else, to those valued friends, Cavaliere Giuseppe Brambilla, Counselor of the Italian Embassy in Washington; Major-General Gugliemotti, Military Attach?, and Professor Vittorio Falorsi, formerly Secretary of the Embassy at Washington, to each of whom I am indebted for countless kindnesses. No list of those to whom I am indebted would be complete, however, unless it included the name of my valued and lamented friend, the late Count V. Macchi di Cellere, Italian Ambassador to the United States, whose memory I shall never forget. I welcome this opportunity of expressing our appreciation of the hospitality shown us by their Majesties King Ferdinand and Queen Marie of Rumania, who entertained us at their Castle of Pelesch, and of acknowledging my indebtedness to His Excellency M. Bratianu, Prime Minister of Rumania, and to M. Constantinescu, Rumanian Minister of Commerce.

THRAVSMA Contextualising the Intentional Destruction of Objects in the Bronze Age Aegean and Cyprus【
|

How does intentionally inflicting damage to material objects mediate the human experience in the prehistoric eastern Mediterranean? For all of the diversity in cultural practice in the civilisations of the Greek mainland and Aegean islands, Crete, Cyprus and the eastern coast of Italy between 4000-750 BC, archaeologists consider the custom of ritually killing objects as a normative, if inconsistent practice. Yet as artefacts that are alike only in that they have been disarticulated, intentionally destroyed objects defy easy characterization. Such pieces frequently stand outside of clearly defined patterns. This volume is an initial step in addressing a gap in the scholarship by aiming to deconstruct and contextualize the practice of intentional fragmentation. The case studies in this volume present a diverse range of evidence, including pottery, lithics, metals, jewellery, figurines, buildings and human remains, in an exploration of the wide spectrum of meanings behind material destruction.

The Emergence of Aegean Prehistory【電子書籍】[ Andrew Shapland ]
|

This Element focusses on the emergence of Aegean Prehistory as a discipline, starting with the first recorded encounters with prehistoric monuments and artefacts and ending with the decipherment of Linear B in 1952. It broadens the history of Aegean Bronze Age archaeology as told in popular accounts as a series of excavations of great men, particularly Heinrich Schliemann at Troy and Mycenae and Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos. Though their work is of fundamental importance for the discipline, here it is placed within wider political, institutional and intellectual frameworks. This Element also provides an overview of the work of many other archaeologists across the Aegean and the regional and historical context in which they operated. It provides a brief but comprehensive history of the formative stages of the study of Aegean Prehistory.

Circuits of Metal Value Changing Roles of Metals in the Early Aegean and Nearby Lands【
|

This volume explores the part played by different metals in use from the fourth millennium BC to the Early Iron Age, not only in the Aegean but also in the wider Old World. It addresses the divergent uses and roles of different metals, the interrelationships of these roles and the changing values that may have been accorded to them at different times and in different places by producers and consumers. Individually, the papers in the volume contemplate the particular properties of different metals and the various issues concerning their frequent under-representation in the archaeological (but not necessarily textual) record, and also point out comparative and diachronic perspectives that may have the ability to offer insights into their important roles in wider cultural and historical changes over a period of several millennia. After the Introduction and Chapter 1, which reflects on some of the parameters involved in the term ‘precious’ as applied to metals, the remaining six chapters cover the Aegean and the networks that link the Aegean with Italy, Cyprus and the Near East more generally, and south-east Anatolia and the Caucasus. Between them they discuss the beginnings of regular iron metallurgy, the uses of and attitudes to gold, silver and bronze and other copper-based alloys at various times between the fourth millennium BC and the Early Iron Age.

The Philistines and Aegean Migration at the End of the Late Bronze Age【電子書籍】[ Assaf Yasur-Landau ]
|

In this study, Assaf Yasur-Landau examines the early history of the biblical Philistines who were among the 'Sea Peoples' who migrated from the Aegean area to the Levant during the early twelfth century BC. Creating an archaeological narrative of the migration of the Philistines, he combines an innovative theoretical framework on the archaeology of migration with new data from excavations in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel and thereby reconstructs the social history of the Aegean migration to the southern Levant. The author follows the story of the migrants from the conditions that caused the Philistines to leave their Aegean homes, to their movement eastward along the sea and land routes, to their formation of a migrant society in Philistia and their interaction with local populations in the Levant. Based on the most up-to-date evidence, this book offers a new and fresh understanding of the arrival of the Philistines in the Levant.

Crossroads in the Black Aegean Oedipus, Antigone, and Dramas of the African Diaspora【電子書籍】[ Barbara Goff ]
|

Crossroads in the Black Aegean is a compendious, timely, and fascinating study of African rewritings of Greek tragedy. It consists of detailed readings of six dramas and one epic poem, from different locations across the African diaspora. Barbara Goff and Michael Simpson ask why the plays of Sophocles' Theban Cycle figure so prominently among the tragedies adapted by dramatists of African descent, and how plays that dilate on the power of the past, in the inexorable curse of Oedipus and the regressive obsession of Antigone, can articulate the postcolonial moment. Capitalizing on classical reception studies, postcolonial studies, and comparative literature, Crossroads in the Black Aegean co-ordinates theory and theatre. It crucially investigates how the plays engage with the 'Western canon', and shows how they use their self-consciously literary status to assert, ironize, and challenge their own place, and that of the Greek originals, in relation to that tradition. Beyond these oedipal reflexes, the adaptations offer alternative African models of cultural transmission.

|

In this gripping thriller, the tranquil landscapes of Greece belie a deadly secret that threatens to engulf Europe in a wave of chaos. As a sinister web of deceit and danger emerges, a disparate group of individuals come together to unravel the mystery of the Golden Triangle before the drug cartel run by the menacing Kappa threatens Greece's democracy.

Deep within the heart of Greece, a sinister undercurrent surges through the idyllic beauty, as a relentless tide of drugs, smuggled from the Middle East, infiltrates their shores before inevitably reaching the shores of the rest of Europe and the United States. At the centre of this labyrinthine operation stands Kappa, the enigmatic and feared leader of a Greek cartel. With a chilling blend of cunning and ruthlessness, Kappa's iron grip on power drives his criminal empire, leaving no room for mercy.

When Alex Kalfas, the steadfast Prime Minister of Greece, learns of the drug funnelling, he realizes that the very fabric of his nation's integrity is at stake. With the weight of his country's future on his shoulders, he joins forces with Chris Horsman, the seasoned CIA station chief in Athens. The two men embark on a treacherous journey to dismantle the cartel, their every move shadowed by the looming threat of violence and death.

Yet, it's not just governments that are at stake, but also the lives of their loved ones. Gitta Lehrer, Alex's wife and a former CIA operative, holds dark secrets. As the stakes escalate, Gitta finds herself thrust back into a world she thought she had left behind, bringing her unique skills to bear on a mission that could spell the difference between life and death for those she holds dear.

The only clue in their possession is a cryptic phrase: "Golden Triangle." As they delve deeper into the heart of this mystery, the team uncovers a labyrinthine network of alliances, betrayals, and hidden motives. From the sun-soaked streets of Athens to the dark depths of Delphi, Milos and Aegina, they must navigate a perilous landscape where nothing is as it seems.

"The Aegean Enigma" weaves a tapestry of suspense, intrigue, and high-stakes action. As the clock ticks down and the tendrils of the cartel's influence spread, Alex, Chris, Gitta, and the head of Greece's anti-terrorist group, Yannis Blounas, are faced with impossible choices. Can they break the cartel's grip before the democracy descends into chaos? Or will the shadows of the Golden Triangle obscure their every move, sealing their fates and those of countless innocent lives?

In this heart-pounding narrative, alliances are forged, loyalties are tested, and the true nature of power is exposed. With relentless pacing and intricate plotting, "The Aegean Enigma" thrusts readers into a world where the line between hero and villain blurs, and the consequence of every decision reverberates across Europe and the vastness of space, to a distant galaxy. Of Odysseys and Oddities Scales and Modes of Interaction Between Prehistoric Aegean Societies and their Neighbours【電子書籍】
|

Of Odysseys and Oddities is about scales and modes of interaction in prehistory, specifically between societies on both sides of the Aegean and with their nearest neighbors overland to the north and east. The 17 contributions reflect on tensions at the core of how we consider interaction in archaeology, particularly the motivations and mechanisms leading to social and material encounters or displacements. Linked to this are the ways we conceptualize spatial and social entities in past societies (scales) and how we learn about who was actively engaged in interaction and how and why they were (modes). The papers provide a broad chronological, spatial and material range but, taken together, they critically address many of the ways that scales and modes of interaction are considered in archaeological discourse. Ultimately, the intention is to foreground material culture analysis in the development of the arguments presented within this volume, informed, but not driven, by theoretical positions.

Representations Material and immaterial modes of communication in the Bronze Age Aegean【
|

This volume presents a series of reflections on modes of communication in the Bronze Age Aegean, drawing on papers presented at two round table workshops of the Sheffield Centre for Aegean Archaeology on ‘Technologies of Representation’ and ‘Writing and Non-Writing in the Bronze Age Aegean’. Each was designed to capture current developments in these interrelated research areas and also to help elide boundaries between ‘science-based’ and ‘humanities-based’ approaches, and between those focused on written communication (especially its content) and those interested in broader modes of communication. Contributions are arranged thematically in three groups: the first concerns primarily non-written communication, the second mainly written communication, and the third blurs this somewhat arbitrary distinction. Topics in the first group include use of color in wall-paintings at Late Bronze Age Pylos; a re-interpretation of the ‘Harvester Vase’ from Ayia Triada; re-readings of the sequence of grave stelae at Mycenae, of Aegean representations of warfare, and of how ritual architecture is represented in the Knossos wall-paintings; and the use of painted media to represent depictions in other (lost) media such as cloth. Topics in the second group range from defining Aegean writing itself, through the contexts for literacy and how the Linear B script represented language, to a historical exploration of early attempts at deciphering Linear B. In the third group Linear B texts and archaeological data are used to explore how people were represented diacritically through taste and smell, and how different qualities of time were expressed both textually and materially; the roles of images in Aegean scripts, complemented by a Peircian analysis of early Cretan writing; a consideration of the complementary role of (non-literate) sealing and (literate) writing practices; and concludes with a further exploration of the color palette used at Pylos.

Political Economies of the Aegean Bronze Age【電子書籍】[ Daniel J. Pullen ]
|

This volume brings together an international group of researchers to address how Mycenaean and Minoan states controlled the economy. The contributions, originally delivered at the 2007 Langford Conference at the Florida State University, examine the political economies of state (and pre-state) entities within the Aegean Bronze Age, including the issues of centralization and multiple scales of production, distribution, and consumption within a polity; importance of extraregional trade; craft specialization; the role of non-elite institutions, and the political economy before the emergence of the palaces. The contributors address these issues from an explicitly comparative perspective, both within and across Minoan and Mycenaean contexts. The conclusions reached in this volume shed new light on the essential differences between and among "Minoan" and "Mycenaean" states through their political economies.

The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean【電子書籍】[ Eric H. Cline ]
|

The Greek Bronze Age, roughly 3000 to 1000 BCE, witnessed the flourishing of the Minoan and Mycenean civilizations, the earliest expansion of trade in the Aegean and wider Mediterranean Sea, the development of artistic techniques in a variety of media, and the evolution of early Greek religious practices and mythology. The period also witnessed a violent conflict in Asia Minor between warring peoples in the region, a conflict commonly believed to be the historical basis for Homer's Trojan War. The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean provides a detailed survey of these fascinating aspects of the period, and many others, in sixty-six newly commissioned articles. Divided into four sections, the handbook begins with Background and Definitions, which contains articles establishing the discipline in its historical, geographical, and chronological settings and in its relation to other disciplines. The second section, Chronology and Geography, contains articles examining the Bronze Age Aegean by chronological period (Early Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age). Each of the periods are further subdivided geographically, so that individual articles are concerned with Mainland Greece during the Early Bronze Age, Crete during the Early Bronze Age, the Cycladic Islands during the Early Bronze Age, and the same for the Middle Bronze Age, followed by the Late Bronze Age. The third section, Thematic and Specific Topics, includes articles examining thematic topics that cannot be done justice in a strictly chronological/geographical treatment, including religion, state and society, trade, warfare, pottery, writing, and burial customs, as well as specific events, such as the eruption of Santorini and the Trojan War. The fourth section, Specific Sites and Areas, contains articles examining the most important regions and sites in the Bronze Age Aegean, including Mycenae, Tiryns, Pylos, Knossos, Kommos, Rhodes, the northern Aegean, and the Uluburun shipwreck, as well as adjacent areas such as the Levant, Egypt, and the western Mediterranean. Containing new work by an international team of experts, The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean represents the most comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date single-volume survey of the field. It will be indispensable for scholars and advanced students alike.

Asia Minor of Aegean【電子書籍】[ Konstantinos Thodis ]
|

Greeks in Turkey lived in their historic homeland, Asia Minor, where ancient Greek cities flourished until Hellenistic times. Much later, Asia Minor was conquered by Turkish tribes, who moved there from Central Asia. The Greeks remained in these territories until the early 20th century, when the Kemalists seized power of the Ottoman state. The Seven Churches, the seven wolves of Greek Christian civilization, were wiped out. The Greeks of Asia Minor held "Thermopylae", until the great disaster, which hit not only Hellenism, but also global culture, after the Greeks were ripped out, not only from their homes, but also from a region that thousands of years ago, the Greek element was intense and marked with high ideas, his ideals and lifestyle, all of humanity..

Written sources, but mostly archaeological monuments of the region, which have survived to this day, from the hordes of the "barbarians," testify to the truth. They have a Greek stamp and Greek letters. From Aeolia to Lycia and Cilicia, from Bithynia to Paphlagonia and Cappadocia and from Karia and Ionia to Lydia, Mysia, Pisidia and Pamphilia, the Greek element was culturally dominant, except for some seasons until the Roman conquest, when the Hittites at the beginning and the Persians beyond, subdued with the power of the weapons and their arithmetic superiority the flourishing Greek cities and towns of Asia Minor..

The Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 gave the last blow to the Turkish economy. In addition to the loans and issuance of notes, caused by military needs, the Ottoman Empire had to repay and compensate Russia. Under these circumstances, Turkey was forced to declare full bankruptcy. In the early 1920s, in a mutually beneficial relationship between Soviet Russia and Turkey, intertwined political, military, ideological and economic interests emerged. The national interests of Soviet Russia and Turkey, in an unorthodox and unlikely way, were aligned, while for many centuries ago Russia and Turkey were incompatible opponents. Until the year 1915, when the persecution of Christian populations by the Turks on the territory of Asia Minor began, there were already many Greeks and Armenians there. But, in addition to the waves of advertising campaign and speculation, European forces have made a carefully thought-out plan: to conquer Turkey financially in order to achieve its full political submission. The emergence of foreign capital in Asia Minor brought together the local political interests of France, England and Russia. The results were not long overdue..

To manage public debt, the Ottoman Debt Administration was created, which turned into a kind of "state within state". European capital has invested in Asia Minor in two directions. On the one hand, his field of activity was the entire empire, which he tried to cover with a network of railways, banks, and import-export offices. On the other hand, European powers have long sought to assert their dominant economic influence in a particular area, chosen for reasons not only purely economic but also political and strategic in general. Italy's involvement in the distribution of Asia Minor territories is probably the most curious page in the history of diplomatic relations during World War I. The conditions for Italy's entry into the war on the side of the Entente forces were laid down in the London Agreement of 1915..

Asia Minor's refugees arriving in the major urban centres of Greece, as early as September 1922, except for homelessness, had to cope with the total absence and lack of welfare of the State; but also the bureaucracy of its banking institutions, which after the people-to-people treaty, they took over the financial part of the compensation of refugees and the rural establishment of refugee farmers..
