Autonomous Flying Robots Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Micro Aerial Vehicles【電子書籍】[ Kenzo Nonami ]

The advance in robotics has boosted the application of autonomous vehicles to perform tedious and risky tasks or to be cost-effective substitutes for their - man counterparts. Based on their working environment, a rough classi cation of the autonomous vehicles would include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), - manned ground vehicles (UGVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs). UAVs, UGVs, AUVs, and ASVs are called UVs (unmanned vehicles) nowadays. In recent decades, the development of - manned autonomous vehicles have been of great interest, and different kinds of autonomous vehicles have been studied and developed all over the world. In part- ular, UAVs have many applications in emergency situations; humans often cannot come close to a dangerous natural disaster such as an earthquake, a ood, an active volcano, or a nuclear disaster. Since the development of the rst UAVs, research efforts have been focused on military applications. Recently, however, demand has arisen for UAVs such as aero-robotsand ying robotsthat can be used in emergency situations and in industrial applications. Among the wide variety of UAVs that have been developed, small-scale HUAVs (helicopter-based UAVs) have the ability to take off and land vertically as well as the ability to cruise in ight, but their most importantcapability is hovering. Hoveringat a point enables us to make more eff- tive observations of a target. Furthermore, small-scale HUAVs offer the advantages of low cost and easy operation.

Looking Down the Corridors Allied Aerial Espionage Over East Germany and Berlin, 1945-1990【電子書籍】[ Kevin Wright ]

Between 1945 and 1990 the Western Allies mounted some of the most audacious and successful intelligence collection operations of the Cold War. Conducted in great secrecy, aircrews flew specially modified transport and training aircraft along the Berlin Air Corridors and Control Zone to gather intelligence on Soviet and East German military targets in the German Democratic Republic and around Berlin. The Air Corridors comprised three regulated airways for civil and military air traffic that connected West Berlin to West Germany. Operating under the guise of innocent transport and training flights, the pilots used their right of access to gather huge amounts of imagery for forty-five years. They also provided the western intelligence community with unique knowledge of the organisation and equipment used by Warsaw Pact forces.

For the first time, using recently declassified materials and extensive interviews with those involved, Looking Down the Corridors
provides a detailed account and analysis of these operations and their unique contribution to the Cold War.

Fall of the Red Baron World War I Aerial Tactics and the Death of Richthofen【電子書籍】[ Leon Bennett ]

Fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron) lacked innate aerobatic ability. As a tyro, he attempted to solve this problem through denial, going so far as to sneer at stunting as pointless. Great War air combat experience proved quite the reverse, and so we would anticipate a short and sad fighting life for the fellow. Yet the Red Baron became the Great War's single greatest scorer, as measured by total victories. How did he do it? This book is concerned with tactics, especially those tactics used by the Red Baron and his opponents. It offers the how and why of Great War aerial combat. The author leans heavily on his expertise in engineering and aerodynamic techniques to explain this, with his reasoning presented in a readable, non-mathematical style. Absent are both the usual propaganda-laced Air Service reports and psychobabble. Offered instead is the logic behind Great War aerial combat; i.e., those elements determining success or failure in the Red Baron's air war. Gunnery experience led to the machine gun as the weapon best suited for aerial combat. Joined with a suitable aircraft, the extremely successful Fokker diving attack resulted. In reaction, effective defensive techniques arose, using forms of shrewd tactical cooperation by two-seater crews: pilot and gunner. These are detailed. Numbers mattered, establishing the level of assault firepower. Tactics of machines flying together in formation are given, as well as those of 'formation busters', intent upon reversing the odds and turning large numbers into a disadvantage. A pilot's nature and emotions had much to do with choosing between the options defining tactics. What were the aces like? How were tactics tailored to suit personality? What traits made for the ability to grapple with a jammed machine gun? A dozen high achievers are examined in terms of tactics and background. In a fascinating study Leon Bennett covers all of these aspects of WWI aerial combat, and more. Similarly, the author turns his attention to examining the cause of von Richthofen's death, employing the tools of logic, rather than merely accepting one of the many conflicting eyewitness reports as truth. In doing so, much testimony is exposed as unlikely. The bullet scatter to be expected from ground anti-aircraft fire matters greatly, and is developed, along with the odds against lone riflemen hoping to hit a fast-moving low altitude target. The most dangerous altitude for front-line crossing is established. The author concludes by rating the possibility of a rifleman downing the Red Baron as quite realistic - certainly as likely as any of the more celebrated possibilities. This is an important book, offering a groundbreaking account of WWI aerial tactics, and a thorough examination of the final combat and death of the Red Baron.

Yugoslavia and Greece 1940?41 The Axis' aerial assault in the Balkans【電子書籍】[ Pier Paolo Battistelli ]

A new illustrated history of the German and Italian air campaigns in the invasions of Greece and Yugoslavia, the last full-scale Axis air offensives before Operation Barbarossa.

The Greece campaign was launched by Italy in October 1940, the first large-scale campaign of the Italian Air Force outside North Africa, and its last major solo effort. With the German involvement in April 1941, and with the invasion of Yugoslavia, the Balkans saw the last large-scale Axis air campaign in Europe before the invasion of the USSR. It was also the campaign that saw expeditionary units of the RAF fighting alongside the Greeks ? most famously, the handful of Hurricanes that fought to the end from makeshift olive-grove airfields, among them the Hurricane ace and future novelist Roald Dahl.

In this book, renowned historian Pier Paolo Battistelli and air power expert Basilio di Martino explain how this unique campaign was fought. They highlight elements such as the Italians' development of air-to-ground support while carrying out, for the first and only time, an airborne operation, and how the Germans refined their tactics from the 1940 campaign in the West, while now also playing a major anti-shipping role.

Illustrated throughout with rare photos, superb original paintings, maps and 3D diagrams, this is an expert account of the air war over the eastern Mediterranean.

Global UAS Proliferation Challenges USAF Air Superiority: History of Combat Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Drones and RPAs, Emerging Material and Non-Material Solutions for Anti-RPA Technologies【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. Remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) have been under development with intent for use in a military environment for almost 100 years. For the majority of that time period, RPA complexity, size, cost, logistical and handling requirements have made them cumbersome and difficult to use dissuading most nations from pursuing them as a viable capability. However, dramatic improvements in technology over the last two decades have allowed for a decrease in size, cost, and complexity while increasing capability. As a result, proliferation of small inexpensive RPAs has occurred on a global scale making them available for nation states and non-state actors to procure. Lightweight RPAs present a threat to USAF contingency operations. To maintain air superiority the USAF must recognize inexpensive RPA proliferation is currently unchecked, the threats they present, and pursue material and non-material solutions to defeat these threats. This paper provides a short review of the history, development, and use of combat RPAs, highlights RPA proliferation and threat, explores emerging anti-RPA technologies and recommends material and non-material solutions to address the threat.

This compilation includes a reproduction of the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community.

The United States has retained air superiority in every conflict it has participated since the conclusion of the Vietnam War. No U.S. ground forces have been killed in combat by a foreign airpower since the Korean War. The U.S. monopoly on airpower, however, is rapidly coming to a close with increasing global proliferation of inexpensive Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA). While the United States Air Force's (USAF) offensive Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) capability is unmatched, its defensive UAS capability is under developed, jeopardizing the USAF's ability to provide air superiority during contingency operations. The next evolution in aviation extends beyond the large multi-million dollar drone highlighted on the nightly news to the easily acquired RPA. Ease of access coupled with intent could lead to state and non-state actors using inexpensive RPAs against our nation. The USAF has little ability to defend against them as existing conventional radars and armaments are designed to detect and defeat large aircraft. To maintain air superiority the USAF must recognize inexpensive UAS proliferation is unchecked, the threats they present, and pursue material and non-material technologies and capabilities to defeat these threats. Low cost RPA technology has flooded the commercial market. Widespread Internet access provides means to purchase sub-components or a fully assembled, ready-to-fly unit. Small RPAs are defined as an asset with a wingspan or rotor-blade diameter less than six feet, can be concealed within the confines of a vehicle, suitcase or backpack, costs less than $25K, and can be operated by one person with no formal training.

Aerial Imagination in Cuba is a visual, ethnographic, sensorial, and poetic engagement with how Cubans imagine the sky as a medium that allows things to circulate. What do wi-fi antennas, cactuses, pigeons, lottery, and congas have in common? This book offers a series of illustrated ethno-fictional stories to explore various practices and beliefs that have seemingly nothing in common. But if you look at the sky, there is more than meets the eye. Strategic Terror The Politics and Ethics of Aerial Bombardment【電子書籍】[ Beau Grosscup ]

Presenting a global history of aerial bombardment, this book shows how certain European powers initiated aerial bombardment of civilians after World War I, and how it was an instrument of choice in World War II. Beau Grosscup shows that such methods, used initially as a means of terrorizing native populations in Africa and the Middle East, have become the primary form of terrorism in more recent decades.

While such 'strategic terror' is not classed as 'terrorism' in the West, this reflects an unwillingness to confront the human costs and immorality of aerial bombardment. Grosscup argues that if terrorism is to be diminished, the role of aerial bombing in sustaining global violence must be recognized.

Aerial Operations in the Revolutions of 1922 and 1947 in Paraguay The First Dogfights in South America【電子書籍】[ Antonio Luis Sapienza ]

In the first half of the 20th Century, there were several revolutions in Paraguay, starting in 1904, then 1908, 1911-12, 1922-23, 1936 and finally 1947. In 1922, a huge internal crisis in the Liberal Party led to a bloody revolution and for the first time in the history of the country, both sides decided to use aerial power against the enemy. There were not any airplanes available in Paraguay at that time, and very few pilots, just three, so both the government led by President Eusebio Ayala, and the revolutionaries led by a couple of Army colonels, Chirife and Mendoza, searched for foreign pilots and planes in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Many First World War veterans emigrated to Latin America in search of a better life, either opening flight schools or offering their services in local conflicts. That is how some of them came to Paraguay with their own aircraft, which were bought by either the government or the revolutionaries. The three Paraguayan pilots offered their services to the government, which soon established the first air base near the capital, in a wide open field called ‘?u-Guaz?’ (a Guaran? name meaning ‘Big Field’). Meanwhile, the rebels organized their own air base, first near the city of Villarrica, and later in Cang?. The main types used by both sides were the Ansaldo SVA5 and SVA10, but the government also managed to purchase a Breguet XIV, an Armstrong Whitworth FK.8, a SPAD S.20 and a couple of SAML A.3. Inevitably the first dogfights took place, and also bombing raids, strafing enemy troops, and recce missions on both sides. Finally, in mid-1923, the revolutionaries were defeated and one of the consequences was the foundation of the Military Aviation School.

In contrast, the Revolution of 1947 lasted just a few months but it was as bloody as the previous one, if not more so. The government, supported by the Colorado Party, fought against the revolutionaries, composed of almost 70% of the Army, Navy and Air Arm, supported by the Liberal, Febrerista and Communist parties. Regarding the Air Arm, it split in two, but at the beginning most of the aircraft in flying conditions were used by the revolutionaries, whose main base was the city of Concepci?n, in the north of the country. Soon, the government air arm had some aircraft in flying condition although most of the Italian types purchased in 1939 were out of service. Only Lend-Lease trainers such as PT-19, BT-13, AT-6 types were used for recce and light bombing raids, using mortar ammunition. Some weeks later, the loyalists managed to repair some Caproni AP-1s to be flown against the rebels. There were a few dogfights but no aircraft were shot down in them, although some were lost due to AA fire. In the end, the government could defeat the revolutionaries, mainly because of the lack of tactical organization in the rebel forces. This is the first in-depth account of them with data, pictures, maps and profiles, some of them never published before.

Taking Fire! Memoir of an Aerial Scout in Vietnam【電子書籍】[ David L. Porter ]

As a first lieutenant in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, U.S. Army pilot David Porter was section leader in an Aerial Scout platoon in Vietnam. Their mission was to conduct reconnaissance in OH-6 aircraft (a.k.a. Light Observation Helicopter or "Loach") near the Cambodian border. Finding and engaging the enemy at low altitude in coordination with an AH-1 Cobra gunship circling above, these units developed a remarkable method of fighting the Viet Cong: Hunter-Killer Operations.

The tactic had great local success but died with the war. Few today are aware of the hazards these pilots faced during times of intense combat. Porter's vivid memoir recounts the internal workings of a legendary air cavalry troop, in-the-cockpit combat actions, and the men who were key players on this perilous battleground.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS): Role of DoD Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Homeland Security - Border Security, History of UAVs (Remotely Piloted Aircraft - RPA, Drones)【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This paper seeks to identify roles in which the nation can leverage these assets in the defense of the homeland. Drug interdiction, port security, disaster relief, search and rescue, and border patrol are just a few potential roles. Finally, this paper looks at potential obstacles, both legal and policy, to implementing a proposed way-ahead.

How can the United States leverage DoD ISR assets to secure and defend the homeland? The U.S. border with Canada stretches over 5,400 miles. To the south, the border with Mexico is in excess of 1,950 miles. Additionally, the U.S. has over 12,380 miles of coastline to defend.(2) These expansive borders and vast amounts of coastline present a large challenge to those agencies responsible for U.S. security. The difficulty with securing our southern border, in particular, is well documented. The U.S.-Mexico border has 43 legitimate crossing points. However the rest of the border consists of open desert terrain, rugged mountains and other geographic obstacles making surveillance. Inability of U.S. security forces to monitor the whole border all of the time makes it easier to smuggle drugs and illegal aliens into the United States. (3) Not only are drugs a menace to the U.S., a larger concern would be if terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda choose to smuggle in their operatives and/or weapons of mass destruction (WMD) via the same routes used for drug trafficking.
Today, numerous federal and state organizations are charged with maintaining the security and defense of the homeland: Northern Command (NORTHCOM), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Border Patrol, Coast Guard, state and local police departments. Many of these organizations operate under strained budgets and may lack sufficient funding and personnel to acquire and maintain all of the surveillance capabilities they seek. It is imperative to leverage existing capabilities and know-how in order to improve effectiveness and reduce redundant capabilities in an effort to save money. Specifically, one such capability is DoD’s UAVs.

This is a privately authored news service and educational publication of Progressive Management. THE HIDDEN AERIAL THE SPY LINE ON THE MOUNTAIN【電子書籍】[ Theiss Lewis Edwin ]

... I know it,” groaned Johnnie, his face becoming more disconsolate than ever, and that’s worse than being too young. If I was as big as you, Jimmy, I’d run away and enlist and tell ’em I was eighteen years old.”

Johnnie paused and looked forlornly at the service banner once more. “ They’ll never put a star on it for me,” he said, almost tearfully, and there ain’t a fellow in Central City that’s more eager to help than I am. Whenever I try to do anything they tell me either that I’m too little or that I’m too young. There just ain’t a thing a little fellow like me can do. If you don’t call that hard luck, what is it? ”

Mr. Haskins, the Y. M. C. A. secretary, was passing as Johnnie . finished speaking. He stopped, wheeled, and stepped quickly over to the window where the two boys sat.

You could use a hoe and pull weeds, Johnnie,” he said. In fact, you’d be so close to the ground you ought to be able to pull weeds better than most anybody else.”

Johnnie looked up at him with a sickly smile.

Pulling weeds would help a lot,” he said sarcastically. “ I reckon a good weed puller would be almost as useful as one of those French ‘ seventy- fives.’ ”

Mr. Haskins looked fixedly at Johnnie for a moment. Johnnie,” he said presently, you told the truth without meaning to tell it. That sign across the street, ‘ Food will win the war,^ means exactly what it says. The nations fighting for freedom have
hardly enough of anything. We are short of guns, munitions, flying machines, coal, lumber, steel, and a thousand other things. But the worst shortage is of food. Men are at work night and day to make these other things ; but what good will they be when they are made, unless there is also sufficient food?
Every day food becomes scarcer ; and every day the number of men raising food gets smaller. The Allies need food raisers just now more than they need soldiers or shells or anything else. So just because you can't shoulder a musket and go into the
trenches you mustn't say there is nothing for you to do. You can raise food as well as a six-footer.
And just now that's of more importance than helping to handle a French ‘ seventy-five.' "

Johnnie looked unconvinced. If weed pulling is so helpful," he argued, why did Captain Hardy send for Henry and Roy and Lew and Wilhe to go to New York to help find the secret wireless that the Germans were using? Why didn't Uncle Sam keep them here raising radishes? "

Johnnie," said Mr. Haskins, Uncle Sam has need of men for all sorts of work, and he knows best where each one of us can be of the most use. Those four members of your Wireless Patrol were sent for because ...
