Der Regisseur selbst ordnet seinen Film dem Genre 'zeitgen?ssisches Melodram' zu und betrachtet ihn als 'eine ausschweifende, unwahrscheinliche, aber nicht unm?gliche Geschichte, die in einem Restaurant spielt, wo es abwegig erscheint, dass wirklich alles gegessen wird, sei es auch nur als Experiment.' Im Originaltitel hei?t der Film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover und ist im Jahr 1989 entstanden. Die Handlung des Films spielt in dem Restaurant 'Le Hollandais', welches dem franz?sischen K?chenchef Richard geh?rt. Ferner dreht sich die Geschichte um diesen Koch, den vulg?ren und gewaltt?tigen Gangsterboss Albert Spica, seine attraktive und kultivierte Frau Georgina und ihren ebenso intellektuellen Liebhaber Michael, den Buchh?ndler. Das Groteske und die 'Sch?nheit des Schrecklichen' stehen in diesem Film im Vordergrund. They are chased by their murderers on their ways home from the so called 'maquiladoras', which are factories where they work for a little sum of money and produce TVs or computers for the USA at the assembly lines. The young women are violated and raped by their kidnappers and later their dead bodies are buried somewhere in the desert of Mexico. Nevertheless, the police and the whole government of Ju?rez try to camouflage these events. The number of victims, published by the police, is about 375 women, whereas the estimated number of unreported cases is about 5000. Gregory Nava made these true events to the story of his movie Bordertown from 2006. The tortures the women of Ju?rez have to experience and the underlying topic of border-crossing are the essential subjects of Bordertwon. Furthermore, within his movie, he has chosen a special way of communicating these topics to the viewer: he makes use of media, respectively investigative media, in order to show how hard it is to explore this subject. So, not only he himself uses media as an organ of communication but he moreover embeds the investigation of certain matters into his movie. Nowadays media is the most important institution of distributing and communicating information and of transmitting one's own perspective about certain topics. This is not only done by directors like in the case of Gregory Nava but by everyone who stands in the centre of a certain field - for instance politicians or celebrities. As Wilma de Jong, Martin Shaw and Neil Stammers have formulated in their introduction of Global Activism, Global Media (2005): 'Media appear to be increasingly globalised, as national television, press, etc. are subsumed in gigantic worldwide flows of information and ideas, symbolized by the internet which offers social and political actors new opportunities for more direct communication.' So, media - in our time better said 'mass media' - stands for a direct but widely spread transmission of information to the audience. People, who decide to transmit certain messages through media - in this case for instance Gregory Nava and his protagonists from Bordertown - have a special aim by acting this way: they want to make a change within the field they are working for. The fictional setting of Wisteria Lane in Fairview is the home of a group of women protagonists: Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria), Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross), Edie Britt (Nicolette Sheridan) and Katherine Mayfair (Dana Delany) are the main female characters that are more or less friends. All of them have their own specialties and problems in their lives. The plot of each episode follows these struggles they have to deal with in their family lives in domestic surroundings. But with every episode it becomes clearer that even in beautiful and seemingly perfect suburban neighborhoods lots of secrets, crimes and mysteries are buried. The answers to these mysteries are mostly given by another friend of them - Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong) - who died in the pilot episode of Desperate Housewives because she committed suicide. Mary Alice Young nevertheless appears in the series - but as the narrator of each episode. Her voice leads the viewer through the happenings and through the plot of Desperate Housewives and structures the series with her pro- and epilogues. The following composition is going to deal with the narration of Mary Alice Young and is based on the presentation to the according topic of Desperate Housewives in the seminar 'Serial TV'. This term paper will first concentrate on the tradition of voice-over narration and afterwards on general facts of the voice-over narration in Desperate Housewives. Es formiert sich ferner aus weiteren Themenfeldern - wie zum Beispiel den jeweiligen Einzelmedien und ihrer Entwicklung - die f?r sich gesehen ebenfalls ?ber eine gewisse Komplexit?t verf?gen. Somit wird auch eine jeweils eigene Perspektive auf die Mediengeschichte geboten. Im Seminar 'Modelle der Mediengeschichte - Vom 'G?nsemarsch der Stile' zur 'Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie' wurde die Mediengeschichte in drei Abschnitten behandelt: 1. Bildende Kunst, 2. Historie und 3. Probleme. Innerhalb dieser Aufteilung wurde bereits deutlich, wie umfangreich dieses Feld ist und dass es hinsichtlich dessen immer weiter f?hrender Abhandlungen bedarf; denn die Mediengeschichte ist ein Gebiet, dass sich mit der stetigen Entwicklung der Einzelmedien und der Medienlandschaft insgesamt, immer wieder neu schreibt und ausdehnt. So stellte sich auch die Frage, wie Mediengeschichtsschreibung erfolgen kann? Diese Fragestellung er?ffnete wiederum neue M?glichkeiten der Herangehensweise an die Thematik der Mediengeschichtsschreibung: das hei?t, es kann eine Geschichtsschreibung von Medien, ?ber Medien oder ein 'double-bind', eine Verkn?pfung zwischen diesen beiden geben, die eine Geschichtsschreibung durch Medien ergibt. Ferner kann selbstverst?ndlich eine Geschichtsschreibung der Medien erfolgen. Grob betrachtet scheinen all diese M?glichkeiten der Mediengeschichtsschreibung dasselbe zu bedeuten; dennoch gibt es feine Unterschiede. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es jedoch nicht, diese Unterschiede herauszuarbeiten, sondern vielmehr ein Augenmerk darauf zu werfen, wie Medienwissenschaftler Mediengeschichte darstellen. Somit bezieht sich die vorliegende Arbeit auf den zweiten Teil des Seminars, die Historie, und baut gleichzeitig auf dem gleichnamigen Referat, aus der Sitzung vom 19. Januar 2009 auf.
