The Bed of Procrustes Philosophical and Practical Aphorisms【電子書籍】[ Nassim Nicholas Taleb ]

The author of the modern classics The Black Swan, Fooled by Randomness, and Antifragile, Nassim Nicholas Taleb expresses major ideas in ways you least expect in this collection of aphorisms and meditationsーnow expanded with fifty percent more material than the hardcover.

The Bed of Procrustes takes its title from the Greek myth of a man who made his visitors fit his bed to perfection, either by stretching them or by cutting their limbs. It represents Taleb’s view of modern civilization’s hubristic side effectsーmodifying humans to satisfy technology, blaming reality for not fitting economic models, inventing diseases to sell drugs, defining intelligence as what can be tested in a classroom, and convincing people that employment is not slavery. Playful and irreverent, these aphorisms will surprise you by exposing self-delusions you have been living with but never recognized.

With a rare combination of pointed wit and potent wisdom, Taleb plows through human illusions, contrasting the classical values of courage, elegance, and erudition with the modern diseases of nerdiness, philistinism, and phonies.

The Long and Short of It From Aphorism to Novel【電子書籍】[ Gary Morson ]

Brevity may be the soul of wit, but it is also much more. In this exploration of the shortest literary worksーwise sayings, proverbs, witticisms, sardonic observations about human nature, pithy evocations of mystery, terse statements regarding ultimate questionsーGary Saul Morson argues passionately for the importance of these short genres not only to scholars but also to general readers.

We are fascinated by how brief works evoke a powerful sense of life in a few words, which is why we browse quotation anthologies and love to repeat our favorites. Arguing that all short genres are short in their own way, Morson explores the unique form of brevity that each of them develops. Apothegms (Heraclitus, Lao Tzu, Wittgenstein) describe the universe as ultimately unknowable, offering not answers but ever deeper questions. Dicta (Spinoza, Marx, Freud) create the sense that unsolvable enigmas have at last been resolved. Sayings from sages and sacred texts assure us that goodness is rewarded, while sardonic maxims (Ecclesiastes, Nietzsche, George Eliot) uncover the self-deceptions behind such comforting illusions. Just as witticisms display the power of mind, "witlessisms" (William Spooner, Dan Quayle, the persona assumed by Mark Twain) astonish with their spectacular stupidity.

Nothing seems further from these short works than novels and epics, but the shortest genres often set the tone for longer ones, which, in turn, contain brilliant examples of short forms. Morson shows that short genres contribute important insights into the history of literature and philosophical thought. Once we grasp the role of aphorisms in Herodotus, Samuel Johnson, Dostoevsky, and even Tolstoy, we see their masterpieces in an entirely new light.

Stevie Smith and the Aphorism Hard Language【電子書籍】[ Noreen Masud ]

This volume argues that aphorism represents a tool for the social management of emotion. Rhetorically corralled into a slick, collectable shape, the aphorism promises arresting and instantaneous epiphany. However, the accomplished elegance which positions the aphorism's message as self-evidently true in fact works to repel further enquiry, and ultimately ensures that it will be forgotten or bypassed in favour of another aphorism: no less eagerly embraced for the earlier disappointment. Aphorism, therefore, is a form in which dangerous ideas and emotions can be safely displayed and, simultaneously, effaced. Because aphorism's style defuses the imperative to act on what is clearly known, writers like Stevie Smith can use the form to stage a withdrawal from the burden of making an impact on the world. This book finds that Smith's use of aphorism and its related forms (proverb, epitaph, caption, and fragment) offers a route into her texts. With her disconcerting pen-and-ink drawings, dark comedy, and social ventriloquism which stops short of satire, the rhetorical force of Smith's poetry fascinates and arrests its readers, but nevertheless leaves them unable to react coherently or identify the use-value which her writing appears to promise. Drawing on hitherto unpublished archival material, this project argues that Smith's texts resist analysis because, like the aphorisms embedded throughout them, they offer and exemplify a mode of clearly-declared revelation which, at the same time, makes itself unusable.

A Theory of the Aphorism From Confucius to Twitter【電子書籍】[ Andrew Hui ]

An engaging look at the aphorism, the shortest literary form, across time, languages, and cultures

Aphorismsーor philosophical short sayingsーappear everywhere, from Confucius to Twitter, the Buddha to the Bible, Heraclitus to Nietzsche. Yet despite this ubiquity, the aphorism is the least studied literary form. What are its origins? How did it develop? How do religious or philosophical movements arise from the enigmatic sayings of charismatic leaders? And why do some of our most celebrated modern philosophers use aphoristic fragments to convey their deepest ideas? In A Theory of the Aphorism, Andrew Hui crisscrosses histories and cultures to answer these questions and more.

With clarity and precision, Hui demonstrates how aphorismsーranging from China, Greece, and biblical antiquity to the European Renaissance and nineteenth centuryーencompass sweeping and urgent programs of thought. Constructed as literary fragments, aphorisms open new lines of inquiry and horizons of interpretation. In this way, aphorisms have functioned as ancestors, allies, or antagonists to grand systems of philosophy.

Encompassing literature, philology, and philosophy, the history of the book and the history of reading, A Theory of the Aphorism invites us to reflect anew on what it means to think deeply about this pithiest of literary forms.

Fatherhood, Despotism, Mystical Mutterings, and Other Unrelated Poems, Aphorisms, and a Short Story【電子書籍】[ Daniel Bates ]

Fatherhood, Despotism, Mystical Mutterings, and Other Unrelated Poems, Aphorisms, and a Short Story is the first volume in a five part series. It is a book of poetry and creative writing.

These poems are a record of the endless pursuit of beauty, truth and goodness. A good poem has a way of combining all three, coalescing, for the reader, into a transcendent experience. Through this work you will rediscover the places that are, as described by the Celtic Christian tradition, “worn thin”; where earth and heaven lose their distinctions.

You will laugh, cry, think, be disturbed, elated, and ultimately, inspired. Join Dan in his journey to write 1000 pieces before he turns 30. He is currently 28, which leaves less than two years to complete the task. This is the first fruits of his creative efforts. So, follow along as he tries to complete the challenge in the next two years.

Aphorisms and Reflections From the Works of T. H. Huxley【電子書籍】[ T. H. Huxley ]

Although a man by his works and personality shall have made his mark upon the age he lives in, yet when he has passed away and his influence with him, the next generation, and still more the succeeding one, will know little of this work, of his ideals and of the goal he strove to win, although for the student his scientific work may always live. Thomas Henry Huxley may come to be remembered by the public merely as the man who held that we were descended from the ape, or as the apostle of Darwinism, or as the man who worsted Bishop Wilberforce at Oxford. To prevent such limitation, and to afford more intimate and valuable reasons for remembrance of this man of science and lover of his fellow-men, I have gathered together passages, on widely differing themes, from the nine volumes of his "Essays," from his "Scientific Memoirs" and his "Letters," to be published in a small volume, complete in itself and of a size that can be carried in the pocket. Some of the passages were picked out for their philosophy, some for their moral guidances, some for their scientific exposition of natural facts, or for their insight into social questions; Others for their charms of imagination or genial humour, and many--not the least--for their pure beauty of lucid English writing

Hippocrates is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is traditionally referred to as the "Father of Medicine".
The Hippocratic Corpus is a collection of around seventy early medical works collected in Alexandrian Greece. Aphorisms and treatises【電子書籍】[ Klaus Zankl ]

The most important thing first: you shouldn't read this book in one go. The author's aphorisms encourage reflection. A suggestion: pick up the book, run your finger over the spine and open it at any page, preferably with your eyes closed. You will find passages like the following: "Why do children of criminals end up in care and not their parents in forensic psychiatry?" With these and many other questions, Zankl challenges his readers to look behind the scenes! He deals with questions of upbringing ("complicated"), with the topics of education and professional life (also "complicated") and with the topic of men and women (this much can be revealed: "very complicated").

The Fall at Home New and Collected Aphorisms【電子書籍】[ Don Paterson ]

Aphorisms have been described as 'the obscure hinterland between poetry and prose' ( New Yorker) - short pithy statements that capture the essence of the human condition in all its shades.

In this New and Selected, master of the form Don Paterson brings the best examples from his three previous volumes together with ingenious new material relevant to today's world. Moving and mischievous, canny and profound - these wide-ranging observations of no more than one or two lines demonstrate that the aphorism is the perfect form for our times.

Consciousness is the turn the universe makes to hasten its own end.
*
Agnosticism is indulged only by those who have never suffered belief.
*
Poet: someone in the aphorism business for the money.
