The History of Astronomy A Very Short Introduction【電子書籍】[ Michael Hoskin ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

Astronomy, perhaps the first of the sciences, was already well developed by the time of Christ. Seventeen centuries later, after Newton showed that the movements of the planets could be explained in terms of gravitation, it became the paradigm for the mathematical sciences. In the nineteenth century the analysis of star-light allowed astrophysicists to determine both the chemical composition and the radial velocities of celestial bodies, while the development of photography enabled distant objects invisible to the human eye, to be studied and measured in comfort. Technical developments during and since the Second World War have greatly enlarged the scope of the science by permitting the study of radiation. This is a fascinating introduction to the history of Western astronomy, from prehistoric times to the origins of astrophysics in the mid-nineteenth century. Historical records are first found in Babylon and Egypt, and after two millennia the arithmetical astronomy of the Babylonians merged with the Greek geometrical approach to culminate in the Almagest of Ptolemy. This legacy was transmitted to the Latin West via Islam, and led to Copernicus's claim that the Earth is in motion. In justifying this Kepler converted astronomy into a branch of dynamics, leading to Newton's universal law of gravity. The book concludes with eighteenth- and nineteenth-century applications of Newton's law, and the first explorations of the universe of stars. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. An Introduction to Astronomy - Take a Journey from Earth to the Moon, from the Sun to the Planets, to the Universe and Beyond【電子書籍】[ Forest Ray Moulton, Ph.D. ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

An Introduction to Astronomy by F.R. Moulton - The definitive text for learning about the amazing science of Astronomy.

The progress of mankind has been marked by a number of great intellectual movements. At one time the ideas of men were expanding with the knowledge which they were obtaining from the voyages of Columbus, Magellan, and the long list of hardy explorers who first visited the remote parts of the earth. At another, millions of men laid down their lives in order that they might obtain toleration in religious beliefs. At another, the struggle was for political freedom. It is to be noted with satisfaction that those movements which have involved the great mass of people, from the highest to the lowest, have led to results which have not been lost.

The present age is known as the age of science. Never before have so many men been actively engaged in the pursuit of science, and never before have its results contributed so enormously to the ordinary affairs of life. If all its present-day applications were suddenly and for a considerable time removed, the results would be disastrous. With the stopping of trains and steamboats the food supply in cities would soon fail, and there would be no fuel with which to heat the buildings. Water could no longer be pumped, and devastating fires might follow. If people escaped to the country, they would perish in large numbers because without modern machinery not enough food could be raised to supply the population. In fact, the more the subject is considered, the more clearly it is seen that at the present time the lives of civilized men are in a thousand ways directly dependent on the things produced by science.

Astronomy is a science. That is, it is one of those subjects, such as physics, chemistry, geology, and biology, which have made the present age in very many respects altogether different from any earlier one. Indeed, it is the oldest science and the parent of a number of the others, and, in many respects, it is the most perfect one. For these reasons it illustrates most simply and clearly the characteristics of science. Consequently, when one enters on the study of astronomy he not only begins an acquaintance with a subject which has always been noted for its lofty and unselfish ideals, but, at the same time, he becomes familiar with the characteristics of the scientific movement.

CHAPTER I
Science

CHAPTER II
The Earth
The Shape of the Earth
The Mass of the Earth and the Condition of its Interior
The Earth’s Atmosphere

CHAPTER III
The Motions Of The Earth
The Rotation of the Earth
The Revolution of the Earth

CHAPTER IV
Reference Points and Lines

CHAPTER V
The Constellations

CHAPTER VI
Time

CHAPTER VII
The Moon

CHAPTER VIII
The Solar System
The Law of Gravitation
Orbits, Dimensions, and Masses of the Planets

CHAPTER IX
The Planets
Mercury and Venus
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus and Neptune

CHAPTER X
Comets And Meteors
Comets
Meteors

CHAPTER XI
The Sun
The Sun’s Heat
Spectrum Analysis
The Constitution of the Sun

CHAPTER XII
Evolution Of The Solar System
General Considerations on Evolution
Data of Problem of Evolution of Solar System
The Planetesimal Theory
Historical Cosmogonies

CHAPTER XIII
The Sidereal Universe
The Apparent Distribution of the Stars
Distances and Motions of the Stars
The Stars
The Nebulæ
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 482円

The Sun Kings The Unexpected Tragedy of Richard Carrington and the Tale of How Modern Astronomy Began【電子書籍】[ Stuart Clark ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

In September of 1859, the entire Earth was engulfed in a gigantic cloud of seething gas, and a blood-red aurora erupted across the planet from the poles to the tropics. Around the world, telegraph systems crashed, machines burst into flames, and electric shocks rendered operators unconscious. Compasses and other sensitive instruments reeled as if struck by a massive magnetic fist. For the first time, people began to suspect that the Earth was not isolated from the rest of the universe. However, nobody knew what could have released such strange forces upon the Earth--nobody, that is, except the amateur English astronomer Richard Carrington.

In this riveting account, Stuart Clark tells for the first time the full story behind Carrington's observations of a mysterious explosion on the surface of the Sun and how his brilliant insight--that the Sun's magnetism directly influences the Earth--helped to usher in the modern era of astronomy. Clark vividly brings to life the scientists who roundly rejected the significance of Carrington's discovery of solar flares, as well as those who took up his struggle to prove the notion that the Earth could be touched by influences from space. Clark also reveals new details about the sordid scandal that destroyed Carrington's reputation and led him from the highest echelons of science to the very lowest reaches of love, villainy, and revenge.

The Sun Kings transports us back to Victorian England, into the very heart of the great nineteenth-century scientific controversy about the Sun's hidden influence over our planet.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 3,863円

Calendars and Years II Astronomy and Time in the Ancient and Medieval World【電子書籍】

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

Understanding the calendars used by ancient and medieval cultures is essential to the writing of history. Equally important, however, is understanding the basis upon which our current knowledge of these calendars rests. This second volume of Calendars and Years explores the calendars of ancient and medieval China, India, the ancient Jewish world, the medieval Islamic world, and the Maya. Particular attention is given to the preserved evidence on which our understanding of these calendars lie, the modern historiography of their study, and the role of calendars in ancient and medieval society. Topics covered include the origin of the Chinese sexagenary cycle, evidence for the 364-day year in the ancient Jewish world, and the history of attempts to establish a correlation between Mayan dates and the Julian and Gregorian calendars. 176p, b/w illus (Oxbow Books 2011) Praise for Volume I: "Steele has assembled an essential foundation for the further study of calendariography and chronography in the ancient Near East and Egypt." Francesca Rochberg Journal for the History of Astronomy (November 2008) "It is a book from which there are absolute nuggets of incredible information to be mined." Introducing Astronomy in the Pre-K to 12 STEM Curricula A Resource Guide for Educators【電子書籍】[ Patrick Stakem ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

This book covers the topic of Astronomy in the context of STEM Education. Astronomy is the branch of Science that deals with other objects in the Universe. At night, we can see other stars, the moon, sometimes planets, and, if we are lucky, comets. Astronomy dates back far in the history of mankind, starting with observations of the sky, and the development of theories of what it all meant, and how it all worked. The initial assumption was that the Earth was the center of the Universe, and everything traveled around it. But, by observations, some “heavenly bodies” wander about in the sky, and increasingly complex theories were developed to address this. Later, when the Earth was dethroned as the center of the universe, it was understood that other planets and the Earth were in orbit around the Sun. And, the Sun was just another star, like those that could be seen in the night sky.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,128円
