Anger and Aggression An Essay on Emotion【電子書籍】[ J. R. Averill ]
|

In recent years, a great deal has been written on the topic of aggression; another book on the same topic might seem superfluous at this time. However, the present volume is not just-or even primarily-about aggres sion. It is, rather, a book on anger. Anger and aggression are closely related phenomena, and it is not possible to discuss one without the other. Yet, not all anger is aggressive, nor can all aggression be attributed to anger. Therefore, somewhat different considerations apply to each. Even more importantly, the type of theoretical generalizations one can make differs depending upon whether the primary focus is on anger or aggression. The present volume is subtitled "an essay on emotion." This indicates that the generalizations to be drawn have more to do with emotional responses (e.g., grief, love, envy, etc.) than with various forms of aggression (e.g., riots, war, crimes of violence, etc.). Stated somewhat differently, anger is here being used as a paradigm case for the study of emotion, not for the study of aggression.

Anger And Forgiveness: Resentment, Generosity, Justice【電子書籍】[ 瑪莎.

C. Daniel Batson

Dennis Dalton

Indira Jaising

Jonathan D. Jansen

Albie Sachs

Ancient Wisdom: The Republic by Plato, The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, And Seneca's Morals of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency A Trilogy of Philosophers, Stoics, and Sages (illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Plato (Aristocles) ]

This Trilogy of Ancient Wisdom brings together some of the greatest minds of ancient Time.

The Republic

The Republic is a Socratic dialogue, authored by Plato around 375 BC, concerning justice, the order and character of the just city-state, and the just man. It is Plato's best-known work, and has proven to be one of the world's most influential works of philosophy and political theory, both intellectually and historically. In the dialogue, Socrates talks with various Athenians and foreigners about the meaning of justice and whether the just man is happier than the unjust man. They consider the natures of existing regimes and then propose a series of different, hypothetical cities in comparison, culminating in Kallipolis, a utopian city-state ruled by a philosopher king. They also discuss the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the role of the philosopher and of poetry in society. The dialogue's setting seems to be during the Peloponnesian War.

Meditations

Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy.Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the second book was written at Carnuntum. It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.”

Seneca's Morals of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency

Seneca the Younger (c. 4 BC ? AD 65), fully Lucius Annaeus Seneca and also known simply as Seneca, was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, andーin one workーsatirist of the Silver Age of Latin literature. As a writer Seneca is known for his philosophical works, and forhis plays, which are alltragedies. His prose works include a dozen essays andone hundred twenty-four lettersdealing with moral issues. These writings constitute one of the most importantbodies of primary material for ancientStoicism. As a tragedian, he is best known for plays such as his Medea, Thyestes, and Phaedra. Seneca's influence on later generations is immenseーduring the Renaissance he was "a sage admired andvenerated as an oracle of moral, even of Christian edification; a master of literary style and a model for dramatic art.

Seneca's Morals of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency【電子書籍】[ Lucius Annaeus Seneca ]
|

In "Seneca's Morals of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency," the Roman philosopher Seneca delves into the intricacies of ethical living through a Stoic lens. Each essay provides profound insights into achieving personal happiness and societal harmony, emphasizing the mastery of emotions, particularly anger, and the virtues of clemency and benefaction. Seneca's eloquent prose, marked by a contemplative style and rich rhetorical flourishes, situates these meditations within the broader context of Roman moral philosophy, addressing both personal well-being and communal responsibility. Seneca, a key figure in Stoic philosophy and a statesman, faced numerous personal hardships, including political exile and familial tragedy, that deeply informed his ethical perspectives. His lived experiences under the tumultuous reign of Nero undoubtedly motivated him to seek a framework for resilience and moral integrity, thereby articulating a path to inner peace amidst external chaos. Seneca's philosophical writings reflect his desire to guide individuals towards a reflective and meaningful life, rooted in virtue. This collection is highly recommended for readers seeking a practical approach to Stoicism alongside insight into human psychology. Seneca's reflections are not only timeless but also remarkably prescient, inviting contemporary readers to cultivate tranquility and purpose in their own lives.

Seneca's Morals of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency Timeless Wisdom for Living a Fulfilling Life with Stoic Insights【電子書籍】[ Lucius Annaeus Seneca ]
|

Seneca's "Morals of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency" is a profound exploration of Stoic philosophy that delves into the ethical considerations and psychological practices essential for achieving personal happiness and emotional resilience. Seneca employs a rhetorical style that is both eloquent and accessible, weaving together personal anecdotes, philosophical reflexions, and moral exhortations. Written during a time of political intrigue and moral decay in Rome, Seneca's work responds to the existential dilemmas of his age, presenting a stoic foundation that emphasizes self-control, virtue, and the importance of emotional equanimity in the face of life'??s challenges. Lucius Annaeus Seneca, a prominent Stoic philosopher, statesman, and playwright, drew from his own tumultuous experiences as an advisor to Emperor Nero and his observations of human behavior to articulate these moral teachings. His life, marked by privilege, exile, and the shadows of political machinations, provides a rich backdrop for examining themes of virtue, the transient nature of wealth, and the path to inner peace. Seneca's writings serve not only as philosophical guides but also as reflections on the human condition. I highly recommend this seminal work to readers interested in philosophy, ethics, or personal development. Seneca's insights are timeless and offer invaluable lessons for navigating the complexities of modern life, making this a necessary addition to any thoughtful reader's library.

The National Book Award Finalist and New York Times bestseller that became a guide and balm for a country struggling to understand the election of Donald Trump

"A generous but disconcerting look at the Tea Party. . . . This is a smart, respectful and compelling book."
ーJason DeParle, The New York Times Book Review

When Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, a bewildered nation turned to Strangers in Their Own Land to understand what Trump voters were thinking when they cast their ballots. Arlie Hochschild, one of the most influential sociologists of her generation, had spent the preceding five years immersed in the community around Lake Charles, Louisiana, a Tea Party stronghold. As Jedediah Purdy put it in the New Republic, "Hochschild is fascinated by how people make sense of their lives. . . . [Her] attentive, detailed portraits . . . reveal a gulf between Hochchild's 'strangers in their own land' and a new elite." Already a favorite common read book in communities and on campuses across the country and called "humble and important" by David Brooks and "masterly" by Atul Gawande, Hochschild's book has been lauded by Noam Chomsky, New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu, and countless others.

The paperback edition features a new afterword by the author reflecting on the election of Donald Trump and the other events that have unfolded both in Louisiana and around the country since the hardcover edition was published, and also includes a readers' group guide at the back of the book.

The Goodness Paradox The Strange Relationship Between Virtue and Violence in Human Evolution【電子書籍】[ Richard Wrangham ]
|

“A fascinating new analysis of human violence, filled with fresh ideas and gripping evidence from our primate cousins, historical forebears, and contemporary neighbors.”
ーSteven Pinker, author of The Better Angels of Our Nature

We Homo sapiens can be the nicest of species and also the nastiest. What occurred during human evolution to account for this paradox? What are the two kinds of aggression that primates are prone to, and why did each evolve separately? How does the intensity of violence among humans compare with the aggressive behavior of other primates? How did humans domesticate themselves? And how were the acquisition of language and the practice of capital punishment determining factors in the rise of culture and civilization?

Authoritative, provocative, and engaging, The Goodness Paradox offers a startlingly original theory of how, in the last 250 million years, humankind became an increasingly peaceful species in daily interactions even as its capacity for coolly planned and devastating violence remains undiminished. In tracing the evolutionary histories of reactive and proactive aggression, biological anthropologist Richard Wrangham forcefully and persuasively argues for the necessity of social tolerance and the control of savage divisiveness still haunting us today.

Confront and Conceal Obama's Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power【電子書籍】[ David E. Sanger ]

FROM INSIDE OBAMA’S SITUATION ROOM . . . THE CRITICAL MOMENTS IN THE COVERT WAR AGAINST IRAN, THE STRUGGLES TO DEAL WITH A RECALCITRANT PAKISTAN AND ITS FAST-GROWING NUCLEAR ARSENAL, THE TENSIONS WITH THE AMERICAN MILITARY OVER AFGHANISTAN AND WITH ALLIES SWEPT UP IN THE CHAOS OF THE ARAB SPRING

Three and a half years ago, David Sanger’s book The Inheritance: The World Obama Confronts and the Challenges to American Power described how a new American president came to office with the world on fire. Now, just as the 2012 presidential election battle begins, Sanger follows up with an eye-opening, news-packed account of how Obama has dealt with those challenges, relying on innovative weapons and reconfigured tools of American power to try to manage a series of new threats. Sanger describes how Obama’s early idealism about fighting “a war of necessity” in Afghanistan quickly turned to fatigue and frustration, how the early hopes that the Arab Spring would bring about a democratic awakening slipped away, and how an effort to re-establish American power in the Pacific set the stage for a new era of tensions with the world’s great rising power, China.

As the world seeks to understand the contours of the Obama Doctrine, Confront and Conceal is a fascinating, unflinching account of these complex years, in which the president and his administration have found themselves struggling to stay ahead in a world where power is diffuse and America’s ability to exert control grows ever more elusive.

Danger Calling An Adventurous Tale of Courage, Suspense, and Romance【電子書籍】[ Dora Amy Elles ]
|

In "Danger Calling," Dora Amy Elles crafts a suspenseful narrative that intricately weaves together themes of risk, reward, and the ethical quandaries faced within the realms of espionage and personal loyalty. The novel showcases a vibrant literary style, rich in detail and psychological depth, placing characters in situations that compel them to confront their innermost fears while navigating a web of intrigue. Set against the backdrop of a post-World War I society grappling with the consequences of conflict and betrayal, the book resonates with the broader zeitgeist of its time, reflecting the disillusionment and moral ambiguity characteristic of the early 20th century. Dora Amy Elles, known for her incisive examination of societal issues through fiction, drew upon her own experiences and observations as a woman navigating a male-dominated literary landscape. Her background in journalism and fervent interest in politics likely inspired the complex portrayal of espionage in "Danger Calling," where the stakes are high, and every decision bears weighty implications, paralleling her own views on the moral responsibilities of individuals in the face of political unrest. For readers who appreciate intricately plotted historical fiction laced with psychological suspense, "Danger Calling" offers a compelling exploration of human resilience and ethical dilemmas. Elles's adept storytelling and profound insights make this novel not only an engaging read but a thought-provoking reflection on the nature of danger in both personal and societal realms.

The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump 37 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President - Updated and Expanded with New Essays【電子書籍】[ Bandy X. Lee ]
|

As this bestseller predicted, Trump has only grown more erratic and dangerous as the pressures on him mount. This new edition includes new essays bringing the book up to dateーbecause this is still not normal.

Originally released in fall 2017, The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump was a runaway bestseller. Alarmed Americans and international onlookers wanted to know: What is wrong with him?

That question still plagues us. The Trump administration has proven as chaotic and destructive as its opponents feared, and the man at the center of it all remains a cipher.

Constrained by the APA’s “Goldwater rule,” which inhibits mental health professionals from diagnosing public figures they have not personally examined, many of those qualified to weigh in on the issue have shied away from discussing it at all. The public has thus been left to wonder whether he is mad, bad, or both.

The prestigious mental health experts who have contributed to the revised and updated version of The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump argue that their moral and civic "duty to warn" supersedes professional neutrality. Whatever affects him, affects the nation: From the trauma people have experienced under the Trump administration to the cult-like characteristics of his followers, he has created unprecedented mental health consequences across our nation and beyond. With eight new essays (about one hundred pages of new material), this edition will cover the dangerous ramifications of Trump's unnatural state.

It’s not all in our heads. It’s in his.
