The Thesmophoriazusae【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

The Thesmophoriazusae, or Women Celebrating the Thesmophoria , is a comedy by Aristophanes that satirizes gender relations, religion, and the power of women in ancient Greek society. The plot centers on Euripides, who fears that the women of Athensーgathered to honor the goddess Demeter at the all-female Thesmophoria festivalーwill punish him for portraying them negatively in his tragedies. To secure his safety, he enlists his father-in-law Mnesilochus to infiltrate the festival disguised as a woman. Chaos ensues when Mnesilochus is caught, leading to a series of farcical escapes, witty wordplay, and sharp literary parody. Through slapstick humor and biting satire, Aristophanes critiques both Euripides’ dramatic themes and the social norms surrounding gender and religious ritual, making The Thesmophoriazusae a clever and provocative exploration of art, identity, and societal critique in classical Athens.

Lysistrata (/la??s?str?t?/ or /?l?s??str??t?/; Attic Greek: Λυσιστρ?τη, "Army Disbander") is a comedy by Aristophanes. Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, it is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peaceーa strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for being an early expos? of sexual relations in a male-dominated society. The dramatic structure represents a shift away from the conventions of Old Comedy, a trend typical of the author's career. It was produced in the same year as the Thesmophoriazusae, another play with a focus on gender-based issues, just two years after Athens' catastrophic defeat in the Sicilian Expedition (font: Wikipedia)

Aristophanes' Wasps (422 B.C.) is an entertaining comedy that plunges us into the life of a family in classical Athens, while treating themes that readers of any time and place can appreciate. A father and son argue about politics, household servants try to please their master, a disruptive gang of the father's friends decide to intervene, a dog becomes a lightning-rod for his antics in the kitchen, attempts are made at reform and reconciliation, and it all ends with a drinking party that goes disastrously wrong. The father, Philocleon, and his friends, the chorus of wasp-like old men for whom the play is named, are some of the great creations of comic drama. The characters of the Wasps make constant references to the everyday world they are living in: its political demagogues, court system, religious rituals, social niceties, class distinctions, diseases, clothes, food, toilets, paychecks, geography, weather, household items, literary and mythological allusions, military experiences, and much more. These references give the play its immediacy, but their unfamiliarity to modern students can pose a challenge. This edition provides a full introduction devoted to the political, social, and literary background of the play, as well as notes to the text explaining historical details.

The Birds (Annotated)【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

The Birds is a comedic work by the Ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes. It was performed in 414 BC at the City Dionysia where it won second prize. It has been acclaimed by modern critics as a perfectly realized fantasy remarkable for its mimicry of birds and for the gaiety of its songs. Unlike the author's other early plays, it includes no direct mention of the Peloponnesian War and there are few references to Athenian politics, and yet it was staged not long after the commencement of the Sicilian Expedition, an ambitious military campaign that had greatly increased Athenian commitment to the war effort. In spite of that, the play has many indirect references to Athenian political and social life. It is the longest of Aristophanes' surviving plays and yet it is a fairly conventional example of Old Comedy.
This edition has formatted for your reader, with an active table of contents. It has also been extensively illustrated and annotated, with additional information about the play and its author, including an overview, plot, background, discussion, relation to old comedy, influence, legacy, biographical and bibliographical information.

The Frogs【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

In The Frogs, the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes crafts a comedic and satirical journey to the underworld, where the god Dionysus seeks to bring back a great tragic playwright to save Athens. Disguised as Heracles, Dionysus embarks on a series of farcical adventures, culminating in a contest between the spirits of Aeschylus and Euripides to determine who is the superior dramatist. Blending sharp wit, literary critique, and political commentary, the play mocks contemporary Athenian culture while celebrating the power of art to shape society. With its lively dialogue, clever wordplay, and fantastical premiseーincluding a chorus of frogs whose croaking becomes a memorable refrainーThe Frogs remains a brilliant example of classical comedy that explores the role of tragedy, leadership, and the moral health of the state. Entertaining and thought-provoking, it offers enduring insights into literature, democracy, and human folly.

The Comedies, Vol. 1【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

The so-called old comedy, of which Aristophanes is the only surviving representative, flourished at the time of the Peloponnesian War which shook Greek civilization. There is no good single modern analogue of the old comedy. It is a blend of Shakespeare's 'MidsummerA Night's Dream' with Bernard Shaw. It is extravaganza combined with the dramatic criticism of ideas and set off with occasional flights of true poetry. So at least it appears in Aristophanes, who in native genius and spontaneous mastery of expression ranks with the four or five supreme poets of Greece.

First presented in 411 B.C., this ancient comedy concerns the efforts of Lysistrata, an Athenian woman, to persuade other women to join together in a strike against the men of Greece, denying them sex until they've agreed to put down their arms and end the disastrous wars between Athens and Sparta.
When the strike begins, and the men respond, the comedic battle of the sexes that ensues makes this spirited play one of the most enjoyable of the classics. In it, Aristophanes employs a mixture of shrewd logic and raffish humor that fully exploits the rich comic potential of the story and its underlying antiwar sentiment. Always a favorite of audiences, Lysistrata, because of its pointed feminist sympathies, is studied and performed today more than ever.

“I am entranced

When I can curse my lord behind his back.”

Aristophanes*' The Frogs* is a timeless comedy, combining witty satire and raucous slapstick to delightful effect. Modern critics have acclaimed it as a perfectly realized fantasy remarkable for its wit.

The Frogs tells the story of the god Dionysus, who, despairing of the state of Athens' tragedians, travels to Hades to bring the Euripides back from the dead. He brings along his slave Xanthias, who is smarter and braver than Dionysus.

As The Frogs opens, Xanthias and Dionysus argue over what kind of jokes Xanthias can use to open the play. For the first half of the play, Dionysus routinely makes critical errors, forcing Xanthias to improvise in order to protect his master and prevent Dionysus from looking incompetentーbut this only allows Dionysus to continue to make mistakes with no consequence.

ARISTOPHANES (c. 445-386 BC) was a satirical playwright of ancient Athens. He had his first play produced when he was twenty-one, and wrote some forty plays in all. Little is known about his personal life, but he was twice threatened with prosecution in the 420s for his outspoken attacks on prominent politicians. In 405 however, his fortunes improved, and he was publicly honored for promoting Athenian unity in The Frogs. It is generally recognized as one of Aristophanes' greatest masterworks for its incredibly imaginative plot and clever lyrics. Mystery Cults, Theatre and Athenian Politics A Reading of Euripides' Bacchae and Aristophanes' Frogs【電子書籍】[ Luigi Barzini ]

This new comparative reading of Euripides' Bacchae and Aristophanes' Frogs sets the two plays squarely in their contemporary social and political context and explores their impact on the audiences of the time. Both were composed during a crucial period of Athenian political life following the oligarchic seizure of power in 411 BC and the restoration of democracy in 410 BC, and were in all likelihood produced nearly simultaneously a few months before the rise of the Thirty Tyrants and the ensuing civil war. They also demonstrate significant similarities that are particularly notable among extant Attic theatre productions, including the role of the god Dionysos as protagonist and architect of religious and political action, and the presence of Demetrian and Dionysiac mystic choruses as proponents of the appeasement of civil discord as the cure for Athens' ills.

Focusing on the mystic, civic and political content of both Bacchae and Frogs, this volume offers not only a new reading of the plays, but also an interdisciplinary perspective on the special characteristics of mystery cults in Athens in their political context and the nature of theatrical audiences and their reaction to mystic themes. Its illumination of the function of each play at a pivotal moment in fifth-century Athenian politics will be of value to scholars and students of ancient Greek drama, religion and history.

Aristophanes: Four Plays Clouds, Birds, Lysistrata, Women of the Assembly【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

Capturing the antic outrageousness and lyrical brilliance of antiquity’s greatest comedies, Aaron Poochigian’s Aristophanes: Four Plays brings these classic dramas to vivid life for a twenty-first century audience.

The citizens of ancient Athens enjoyed a freedom of speech as broad as our own. This freedom, parrhesia, the right to say what one pleased, how and when one pleased, and to whom, had no more fervent champion than the brilliant fifth-century comic playwright Aristophanes. His plays, immensely popular with the Athenian public, were frequently crude, even obscene. He ridiculed the great and the good of the city, showing up their hypocrisy and arrogance in ways that went far beyond the standards of good taste, securing the ire (and sometimes the retaliation) of his powerful targets. He showed his contemporaries, and he teaches us now, that when those in power act obscenely, patriotic obscenity is a fitting response.

Aristophanes’s satirical masterpieces were also surpassingly virtuosic works of poetry. The metrical variety of his plays has always thrilled readers who can access the original Greek, but until now, English translations have failed to capture their lyrical genius. Aaron Poochigian, the first poet-classicist to tackle these plays in a generation, brings back to life four of Aristophanes’s most entertaining, wickedly crude, and frequently beautiful lyric comediesーthe pinnacle of his comic art:

・ Clouds, a play famous for its caricature of antiquity’s greatest philosopher, Socrates;
・ Lysistrata, in which a woman convinces her female compatriots to withhold sex from their warmongering lovers unless they negotiate peace;
・ Birds, in which feathered creatures build a great city and become like gods;
・ and Women of the Assembly, Aristophones’s most revolutionary play, which inverts the norms of gender and power.

Poochigian’s new rendering of these comic masterpieces finally gives contemporary readers a sense of the subversive pleasure Aristophones’s original audiences felt when they were first performed on the Athenian stage.

Aristophanes (/??r??st?f?ni?z/ or /??r??st?f?ni?z/;[2] Greek: ?ριστοφ?νη?, pronounced [aristop??n??s]; c. 446 ? c. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaeum, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his thirty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all."
