The Acharnians【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]
|

The Acharnians, one of Aristophanes’ earliest surviving comedies, is a sharp and entertaining critique of war and politics in ancient Athens. Written during the Peloponnesian War, the play follows Dicaeopolis, a weary farmer who takes matters into his own hands by negotiating a private peace with Sparta, defying the city’s warmongering leaders. As he enjoys the benefits of peaceーwine, trade, and personal freedomーhe faces opposition from the chorus of Acharnian charcoal-burners, staunch supporters of the war. Through absurdity, satire, and bold humor, Aristophanes challenges Athenian militarism and exposes the folly of political opportunism. Blending fantasy with pointed social commentary, The Acharnians champions individual reason and peace over nationalistic zeal, offering a timeless reflection on the costs of war and the courage to seek alternatives.

|

In "The Clouds," Aristophanes crafts a sharp and satirical comedy that critiques the intellectual trends of 5th-century Athens, particularly the rise of sophistry and the emerging new philosophies. Through the lens of the character Strepsiades, the play delves into themes of education, morality, and the absurdity of contemporary thought, employing a rich tapestry of wit, wordplay, and farcical situations. Aristophanes's trademark use of exaggerated characters and poetic language not only entertains but also provokes profound reflections on societal values and the relevance of genuine wisdom versus cunning rhetoric. Aristophanes, a seminal figure in Ancient Greek theater, thrived during a time of significant cultural and philosophical transformation. Growing up in a society grappling with the aftermath of war and political upheaval, his experiences deeply informed his criticisms of social institutions and philosophical pretensions. His commitment to exploring the complexities of human nature and the follies of contemporary life is vividly realized in "The Clouds," showcasing his exceptional ability to blend humor with incisive social commentary. I highly recommend "The Clouds" to readers interested in the interplay of comedy and philosophy, as well as those eager to understand the foundations of Western thought and humor.
In "The Frogs," Aristophanes employs sharp wit and vibrant dialogue to explore themes of artistic merit and cultural decline in classical Athens. This comedic play, set in the underworld, follows the god Dionysus as he embarks on a fantastical journey to retrieve the playwright Euripides, ultimately provoking a profound discourse on the nature of drama and the responsibilities of the playwright. Aristophanes' characteristic blend of satire, moral questioning, and humor reflects the societal tensions of his time, capturing the anxieties surrounding the shifting values of Athenian society and the potential loss of cultural integrity amidst political chaos. Aristophanes the Democrat The Politics of Satirical Comedy during the Peloponnesian War【電子書籍】[ Keith Sidwell ]

This book provides a new interpretation of the nature of Old Comedy and its place at the heart of Athenian democratic politics. Professor Sidwell argues that Aristophanes and his rivals belonged to opposing political groups, each with their own political agenda. Through disguised caricature and parody of their rivals' work, the poets expressed and fuelled the political conflict between their factions. Professor Sidwell rereads the principal texts of Aristophanes and the fragmented remains of the work of his rivals in the light of these arguments for the political foundations of the genre.

Comedy and Religion in Classical Athens Narratives of Religious Experiences in Aristophanes' Wealth【電子書籍】[ Francisco Barrenechea ]
|

This book opens up a new perspective on Aristophanic drama and its relationship to Greek religion. It focuses on the comedy Wealth, whose fantasy of universal enrichment is structured upon a rich and largely unexplored framework of traditional stories of Greek religious experiences, such as oracles, miracle cures, and the introduction of new gods. The book examines the form and function of these stories, and explores how the playwright adapts them for his own comic purposes, grounding his comic fantasy on stories of philanthropic divinities who dependably respond to the needs of their worshippers. The collaboration of these deities, who act in tandem with their worshippers, achieves the comic fantasy. Francisco Barrenechea also addresses the larger question of how comedy participated in the religion of its time by imagining and dramatizing beliefs, and reveals the salutary bond that can exist between humor and religion in general.

Demagogues, Power, and Friendship in Classical Athens Leaders as Friends in Aristophanes, Euripides, and Xenophon【電子書籍】[ Professor Robert Holschuh Simmons ]
|

What makes a demagogue? A much more friendly touch, or more importantly, a perception of a friendly touch, than has previously been explored. Demagogues, Power and Friendship in Classical Athens examines the ways in which a demagogic leadership style based on personal connection became ingrained in this period, drawing on close study of several genres of literature of the late 5th and early-to-mid 4th centuries BCE. Such connection was particularly effective with lower classes of Athenians, who had been accustomed to being excluded from politicians' friendship-based approaches to coalition-building.

Comedies of Aristophanes (particularly Knights), tragedies of Euripides (particularly Iphigenia in Aulis), and historical biographies of Xenophon (particularly Anabasis and Cyropaedia) depict demagogues, or characters exhibiting demagogic characteristics, using a style of outreach to members of neglected classes that involved provoking feelings of friendship with individuals in these classes, whether the demagogues and individual supporters actually interacted closely or not. These leaders employed techniques, such as propinquity, homophily, and transitivity, that both contemporary sociologists (and, in some cases, Aristotle) recognize as effective for such purposes. Particular attention is paid to discrepancies in Aristophanes' Knights between how the demagogue Cleon is hyperbolically portrayed (as a pederastic lover of the Athenian people) and how his language and actions make him out ? as a friend of theirs, as he likely portrayed himself.

The Clouds【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

|

The Clouds is a comedy written by the celebrated playwright Aristophanes lampooning intellectual fashions in classical Athens. It was originally produced at the City Dionysia in 423 BC and it was not well received, coming last of the three plays competing at the festival that year. It was revised between 420-417 BC and thereafter it was circulated in manuscript form. No copy of the original production survives, and scholarly analysis indicates that the revised version is an incomplete form of Old Comedy. This incompleteness, however, is not obvious in translations and modern performances. The Clouds can be considered not only the world's first 'comedy of ideas' but also a brilliant and example of that genre. The play gained notoriety for its caricature of the philosopher Socrates ever since its mention in Plato's Apology as a factor contributing to the old man's trial and execution.

Aristophanes (circa 446 BC ? 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his 40 plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author.

The knights - The Acharnians - Peace - Lysistrata - The clouds.【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

Perhaps the first thing to strike usーparadoxical as it may sound to say soーabout the Athenian 'Old Comedy' is its modernness. Of its very nature, satiric drama comes later than Epic and Lyric poetry, Tragedy or History; Aristophanes follows Homer and Simonides, Sophocles and Thucydides. Of its essence, it is free from many of the conventions and restraining influences of earlier forms of literature, and enjoys much of the liberty of choice of subject and licence of method that marks present day conditions of literary production both on and off the stage. Its very existence presupposes a fuller and bolder intellectual life, a more advanced and complex city civilization, a keener taste and livelier faculty of comprehension in the people who appreciate it, than could anywhere be found at an earlier epoch. Speaking broadly and generally, the Aristophanic drama has more in common with modern ways of looking at things, more in common with the conditions of the modern stage, especially in certain directionsーburlesque, extravaganza, musical farce, and even 'pantomime,' than with the earlier and graver products of the Greek mind.

The Eleven Comedies (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

|

It is difficult to compare the Aristophanic Comedy to any one form of modern literature, dramatic or other. It perhaps most resembles what we now call burlesque; but it had also very much in it of broad farce and comic opera, and something also (in the hits at the fashions and follies of the day with which it abounded) of the modern pantomime. But it was something more, and more important to the Athenian public than any or all of these could have been. Almost always more or less political, and sometimes intensely personal, and always with some purpose more or less important underlying its wildest vagaries and coarsest buffooneries, it supplied the place of the political journal, the literary review, the popular caricature and the party pamphlet, of our own times. It combined the attractions and influence of all these; for its grotesque masks and elaborate 'spectacle' addressed the eye as strongly as the author's keenest witticisms did the ear of his audience.[1] This remarkable and distinctive feature, by-the-bye, of the Old Comedy, the 'Parabasis' to wit, calls for a word of explanation. It was a direct address on the 's part to the audience, delivered in verse of a special metre, generally towards the close of the representation, by the leader of the Chorus, but expressing the personal opinions and predilections of the poet, and embodying any remarks upon current topics and any urgent piece of advice which he was particularly anxious to insist on. Often it was made the vehicle for special appeal to the sympathetic consideration of the spectators for the play and its merits. These 'parabases,' so characteristic of the Aristophanic comedy, are conceived in the brightest and wittiest vein, and abound in topical allusions and personal hits that must have constituted them perhaps the most telling part of the whole performance. Even the Gods were not spared by the Aristophanic wit and badinage; in 'Plutus,' in 'The Birds,' in 'The Frogs,' we see them very roughly handled. To wonder at these profane drolleries, however, is to fail altogether to grasp the privileges of ancient comedy and the very nature of Athenian society. The Comic Poets exercised unlimited rights of making fun; we do not read in history of a single one of the class having ever been called to the bar of justice to answer for the audacity of his dramatic efforts. The same liberty extended to religious matters; the Athenian people, keen, delicately organized, quick to see a joke and loving laughter for its own sake, even when the point told against themselves, this people of mockers felt convinced the Gods appreciated raillery just as well as men did. Moreover, the Greeks do not appear to have had any very strong attachment to Paganism as a matter of dogmatic belief. To say nothing of the enlightened classes, who saw in this vast hierarchy of divinities only an ingenious allegory, the populace even was mainly concerned with the processions and songs and dances, the banquets and spectacular shows and all the external pomp and splendour of a cult the magnificence and varied rites of which amused its curiosity. But serious faith, ardent devotion, dogmatic discussion, is there a trace of these things? A sensual and poetic type of religion, Paganism was accepted at Athens only by the imagination, not by the reason; its ceremonies were duly performed, without any real piety touching the heart. Thus the audience felt no call to champion the cause of their deities when held up to ribaldry on the open stage; they left them to defend themselvesーif they could. These performances took place at the Festivals of Dionysus (Bacchus), either the Great Dionysia or the minor celebration of the Lenaea, and were in a sense religious ceremonialsーat any rate under distinct religious sanction. The representations were held in the Great Theatre of Dionysus, under the slope of the Acropolis, extensive remains of which still exist; several plays were brought out at each festival in competition, and prizes, first and second, were awarded to the most successful productionsーrewards which were the object of the most intense ambition

"The Clouds" by Aristophanes is a timeless Greek comedy that satirizes the intellectual and cultural trends of Athenian society. Set against the backdrop of ancient Athens, the play follows the misadventures of Strepsiades, an elderly farmer burdened by debt, who enrolls his son, Pheidippides, in the "Thinkery," a school of sophistry, in hopes of avoiding his financial obligations.

Through witty dialogue and absurd situations, Aristophanes skewers the pretensions of the intellectual elite, particularly the sophists, who are depicted as manipulative charlatans peddling dubious philosophies. The play's central conflict between tradition and innovation, reason and rhetoric, reflects broader tensions within Athenian society and serves as a biting critique of contemporary political and social mores.

"The Clouds" is renowned for its irreverent humor, clever wordplay, and sharp social commentary. Aristophanes uses the absurdity of the plot and the eccentricity of its characters to lampoon the vanity and folly of human ambition, reminding audiences of the importance of humility and moderation in the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.

With its timeless themes and universal appeal, "The Clouds" continues to entertain and provoke audiences to this day, offering a humorous and insightful glimpse into the complexities of human nature and the foibles of society.

What if the most dangerous idea in society wasn't ignorance-but unchecked cleverness?

In Clouds, Aristophanes satirizes the most celebrated thinker in Athens-Socrates-and exposes the social consequences of education unmoored from morality. At the center of the play is Strepsiades, a desperate father seeking a shortcut out of debt. His answer? Enroll in Socrates' school of rhetoric to master the art of deceit. But what begins as a comic attempt to game the system turns into a deeper-and darker-critique of intellectual arrogance, generational divides, and philosophical detachment from everyday life.

This modern translation captures the lyrical energy, comedic rhythm, and biting commentary of Aristophanes' original while making the political and philosophical debates strikingly relevant. A perfect blend of farce and philosophy, Clouds reminds us that ideas have power-and that laughter can be the sharpest critique of all.

What You'll Discover in This Modern Translation:

A Hilarious Satirical Comedy

Follow the outrageous journey of Strepsiades and his son through Socrates' absurd school of logic and linguistic manipulation.

A Cultural Critique of Sophistry and Education

Witness Aristophanes' takedown of intellectual fads, moral relativism, and the dangers of philosophy detached from ethics.

A Unique Portrait of Socrates

See the philosopher not as a saintly martyr, but as a floating, cloud-gazing eccentric-through the eyes of his sharpest critic.

A Lively, Contemporary Translation

Preserves the humor, bite, and meter of the original while ensuring clarity and resonance for today's readers.

A Timeless Reflection on Reason, Rhetoric, and Responsibility

Explore themes of truth, persuasion, and intergenerational conflict that still shape public discourse today.

Whether you're new to Aristophanes or rediscovering the roots of satirical drama, Clouds offers an uproarious and thought-provoking experience that makes ancient philosophy feel strikingly-and hilariously-modern.

The so-called old comedy, of which Aristophanes is the only surviving representative, flourished at the time of the Peloponnesian War which shook Greek civilization. There is no good single modern analogue of the old comedy. It is a blend of Shakespeare's 'Midsummer Night's Dream' with Bernard Shaw. It is extravaganza combined with the dramatic criticism of ideas and set off with occasional flights of true poetry. So at least it appears in Aristophanes, who in native genius and spontaneous mastery of expression ranks with the four or five supreme poets of Greece. This is volume two out of two and includes: Lysistrata The Thesmophoriazus? The Frogs The Ecclesiazus?
Aristophanes (/??r??st?f?ni?z/ or /??r??st?f?ni?z/;[2] Greek: ?ριστοφ?νη?, pronounced [aristop??n??s]; c. 446 ? c. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaeum, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his thirty plays survive virtually complete. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." The Birds【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

The Birds Aristophanes - The Birds has long been hailed as one of the finest masterpieces written by Aristophanes (ca. 456 BC ca. 386 BC), the greatest of all classical Athenian comic dramatists. First performed in 414 BC, at the height of the Peloponnesian War, which pitted Athens against Sparta, the play celebrates the extraordinary character of Athens in a manner that is at once robust, lyrical, satiric, and full of ironic resonance. In the play, two Athenians, Pisthetairos and Euelpides, seek to escape the aggressively quarrelsome climate of Athens by hiking up into the mountains to seek advice from the birds about where they might find a more peaceful place to live, a city where they can relax and enjoy life. But once they begin interacting with the birds, the Athenians cannot resist persuading the creatures to organize themselves into a city state, so that they can exert pressure on the gods above and men below in order to gain power over them (for example, by controlling the gods access to human beings). The impromptu scheme escalates, and by the end of the play, Pisthetairos has supplanted the gods and now rules everything, an occasion which they all celebrate by eating a meal of cooked birds. Much of the play is taken up with the bawdy, energetic, and inventive comedy familiar to readers of Aristophanes. But underlying the humor is an ironic exploration of the Athenian character, which is far too restless and acquisitive, far too in love with ambitious scheming and, above all, with language itself, so that it cannot resist taking control of each and every situation.

The Frogs and Other Plays【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

Aristophanes, often referred to as “The Father of Comedy”, is an ancient Greek poet and playwright who is credited with helping to create the art of satire and irony. Of the over forty plays Aristophanes wrote during his lifetime only eleven survive to this day of which five are collected together here in this volume.“The Wasps” is a play which satirizes the Athenian general Cleon, a popular contemporary demagogue, and the Athenian courts which empower him. “The Thesmophoriazusae” depicts a gathering of women at an annual festival as they plan to enact their revenge upon Euripides for his unflattering depiction of their sex. “The Frogs” relates the journey of the god Dionysus to the underworld, who wishes to improve the state of Athenian tragedy by bringing Euripides back from the dead. In “The Clouds” we find a lampoon of contemporary Athenian intellectuals, most notably Socrates. Lastly in “Plutus”, Aristophanes employs the god of wealth, Plutus, to satirize the political economics of Athenian society. This edition follows the prose translations of The Athenian Society and includes a biographical afterword.

The Women's Festival【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

In The Women’s Festival, Aristophanes crafts a hilarious and provocative comedy centered on gender conflict, theatrical satire, and religious ritual. The play follows the famous tragedian Euripides, who fears that the women of Athens will punish him at the Thesmophoria, a secret female-only festival honoring Demeter, for his unflattering portrayals of women in his plays. To counter this, he enlists his relative Mnesilochus to disguise himself as a woman and infiltrate the gathering. Chaos erupts when Mnesilochus is discovered, leading to a series of farcical escapes, mistaken identities, and witty parodies of Euripides’ own tragedies. Through sharp dialogue and slapstick humor, Aristophanes critiques both Athenian misogyny and the dramatic arts, offering a bold commentary on gender roles, social customs, and the power of satire in classical Greek society.

The Clouds of Aristophanes【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

The Clouds byAristophanes offers a sharp and witty critique of the intellectual movements that swept through late fifth-century Athens. Through biting satire, Aristophanes targets the sophists, a group of philosophers who were often seen as manipulative and morally dubious, with Socrates as the central figure of his parody. The play brilliantly captures the tension between traditional values and the new, controversial ways of thinking that were emerging at the time.

With humor and irreverence, Aristophanes exposes the absurdities and contradictions within academic pretentiousness, making the play both a timeless comedy and a profound commentary on the nature of knowledge and ethics. The Clouds stands as a significant reflection on the cultural and philosophical debates that have shaped Western thought.
