The Devil, The Lovers and Me My Life in Tarot【電子書籍】[ Kimberlee Auerbach ]

Kimmi Auerbach has been in therapy. She’s seen a Reiki Master. She’s even given hypnosis a try. Nobody can give her want she wantsーto know her future is going to be bright, that everything will be okay. So she makes an appointment with Iris Goldblatt, “tarot card reader and mirror to the soul.”

Instead of predicting the future, each card sparks a memoryーlike the time Kimberlee tried to be wild, and instead caught crabs from an Argentinean painter; or the time her father “proposed” at Morton’s Steakhouse (presenting her with an engagement ring for her boyfriend to use); or the moment she found the strength to kick out her freeloading ex.

In a Wizard of Oz like twist of fate, Kimberlee realizes she had the answers all along…and that it’s not about looking into the future, it’s about trusting yourself along the way.

Auerbach's Renaissance Rebirths of an Aesthetic from Shakespeare to Ferrante【電子書籍】[ Chris Warley ]
|

Erich Auerbach's Mimesis is among the most admired works of literary criticism of the last hundred years. Amidst the horrors of the Second World War, Auerbach's prodigious learning managed ? almost miraculously ? to give voice to a delicate, subtle optimism. Focusing on Auerbach's account of Renaissance literature, Christopher Warley rediscovers the powerful beauty of Mimesis and shows its vitality for contemporary literary criticism. Analysing Auerbach's account of Renaissance love lyric alongside Woolf's To the Lighthouse, fifteenth-century Burgundian writing alongside Ferrante, and Shakespeare alongside Michelet, Ruskin and Burckhardt, Auerbach's Renaissance traces an aesthetic that celebrates the diversity of human life. Simultaneously it locates in Auerbach's reading of Renaissance writing a challenge to the pessimism of today, the sense that we live in an endless present where the future looms only as a threat. Auerbach's scholarship, the art he learns from Dante, Rabelais, Montaigne, and Shakespeare, is a Renaissance offering democratic possibility.

The Little Barefoot A Tale by Berthold Auerbach【電子書籍】[ Berthold Auerbach ]
|

The Little Barefoot is a classic German novella written by Berthold Auerbach. The story follows the life of a young girl named Nanni, who lives in a small village in the Black Forest in the early 19th century. Nanni is an orphan who has been taken in by a poor farmer and his family. She is known in the village as "the little barefoot" because she has no shoes and must walk barefoot through the snow and mud. Despite her difficult circumstances, Nanni is a happy and kind-hearted girl who loves to sing and play with the other children in the village. She dreams of one day owning a pair of shoes but knows that this is unlikely given her family's poverty. One day, a wealthy stranger comes to the village and offers to take Nanni away with him to work as a servant in his mansion. Nanni's adoptive family reluctantly agrees to let her go, hoping that she will have a better life with the wealthy man. However, Nanni soon discovers that life in the mansion is not what she expected. The wealthy man and his wife are cruel and abusive, and Nanni is forced to work long hours without rest. She is also forbidden from singing, which is one of her greatest joys. Despite the hardships, Nanni remains strong and determined. She forms a friendship with the gardener's son, who helps her to escape from the mansion and return to her village. "The Little Barefoot" is a touching and timeless story about the power of resilience and kindness in the face of adversity. Auerbach's writing is rich and vivid, bringing to life the beauty of the Black Forest and the struggles of its people. The novella has been beloved by generations of readers for its inspiring message and unforgettable characters.

On the Heights A Novel【電子書籍】[ Berthold Auerbach ]
|

Berthold Auerbach's "On the Heights" is a poignant exploration of the human condition set against the backdrop of the picturesque Black Forest. Through a blend of realistic narrative and lyrical prose, Auerbach intricately depicts the lives of his characters, weaving together personal struggles and broader societal themes. The novel reflects a rich understanding of German-Jewish identity, delving into issues of belonging, faith, and the quest for self-understanding during a time of transformation in 19th-century Europe. Auerbach's narrative is characterized by vivid imagery and profound psychological insights, echoing the Romantic movement while also foreshadowing modernism. Auerbach, a prominent figure in German literature and a trailblazer for Jewish authors, draws upon his own experiences of cultural displacement and social hardship. Born in 1812 in a Jewish family in the small town of Calw, his works often grapple with themes of assimilation, identity, and the challenges faced by marginalized communities. His deep appreciation for nature and the human spirit is mirrored in his writings, as he seeks to bridge the gap between tradition and progress. "On the Heights" is a must-read for those intrigued by the complexities of identity and the intricacies of human relationships. Auerbach'??s eloquent prose and thoughtful reflections invite readers to ponder their place within the world. This novel not only enriches the canon of German literature but also offers timeless insights into the universal search for belonging.

Deception and Abuse at the Fed Henry B. Gonzalez Battles Alan Greenspan's Bank【電子書籍】[ Robert D. Auerbach ]
|

The Federal Reserveーthe central bank of the United Statesーis the most powerful peacetime bureaucracy in the federal government. Under the chairmanship of Alan Greenspan (1987-2006), the Fed achieved near mythical status for its part in managing the economy, and Greenspan was lauded as a genius. Few seemed to notice or care that Fed officials operated secretly with almost no public accountability. There was a courageous exception to this lack of oversight, however: Henry B. Gonzalez (D-TX)ーchairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services (banking) Committee.

In Deception and Abuse at the Fed, Robert Auerbach, a former banking committee investigator, recounts major instances of Fed mismanagement and abuse of power that were exposed by Rep. Gonzalez, including:

Blocking Congress and the public from holding powerful Fed officials accountable by falsely declaringーfor 17 yearsーit had no transcripts of its meetings;

Manipulating the stock and bond markets in 1994 under cover of a preemptive strike against inflation;

Allowing $5.5 billion to be sent to Saddam Hussein from a small Atlanta branch of a foreign bankーthe result of faulty bank examination practices by the Fed;

Stonewalling Congressional investigations and misleading the Washington Post about the $6,300 found on the Watergate burglars.

Auerbach provides documentation of these and other abuses at the Fed, which confirms Rep. Gonzalez's belief that no government agency should be allowed to operate with the secrecy and independence in which the Federal Reserve has shrouded itself. Auerbach concludes with recommendations for specific, broad-ranging reforms that will make the Fed accountable to the government and the people of the United States.

The Liberating Arts Why We Need Liberal Arts Education【電子書籍】[ Emily Auerbach ]
|

A new generation of teachers envisions a liberal arts education that is good for everyone.

Why would anyone study the liberal arts? It’s no secret that the liberal arts have fallen out of favor and are struggling to prove their relevance. The cost of college pushes students to majors and degrees with more obvious career outcomes.

A new cohort of educators isn’t taking this lying down. They realize they need to reimagine and rearticulate what a liberal arts education is for, and what it might look like in today’s world. In this book, they make an honest reckoning with the history and current state of the liberal arts.

You may have heard ? or asked ? some of these questions yourself:

Aren’t the liberal arts a waste of time? How will reading old books and discussing abstract ideas help us feed the hungry, liberate the oppressed and reverse climate change? Actually, we first need to understand what we mean by truth, the good life, and justice.

Aren’t the liberal arts racist? The “great books” are mostly by privileged dead white males. Despite these objections, for centuries the liberal arts have been a resource for those working for a better world. Here’s how we can benefit from ancient voices while expanding the conversation.

Aren’t the liberal arts liberal? Aren’t humanities professors mostly progressive ideologues who indoctrinate students? In fact, the liberal arts are an age-old tradition of moral formation, teaching people to think for themselves and learn from other perspectives.

Aren’t the liberal arts elitist? Hasn’t humanities education too often excluded poor people and minorities? While that has sometime been the case, these educators map out well-proven ways to include people of all social and educational backgrounds.

Aren’t the liberal arts a bad career investment? I really just want to get a well-paying job and not end up as an overeducated barista. The numbers ? and the people hiring ? tell a different story.

In this book, educators mount a vigorous defense of the humanist tradition, but also chart a path forward, building on their tradition’s strengths and addressing its failures. In each chapter, dispatches from innovators describe concrete ways this is being put into practice, showing that the liberal arts are not only viable today, but vital to our future.

***

Contributors include Emily Auerbach, Nathan Beacom, Jeffrey Bilbro, Joseph Clair, Margarita Mooney Clayton, Lydia Dugdale, Brad East, Don Eben, Becky L. Getting Lost in the Novel Strategic Confusion in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century British Fiction【電子書籍】[ Amanda Auerbach ]
|

Instances abound in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century novels where characters, particularly female characters, become lost, often moved by overwhelming emotion. Amanda Auerbach delves into the impact of these scenes on the character and the reader. On one level, 'getting lost' can realign a character's and our own sense of self and of social situation, while more broadly these instances reflect arcs within the overall narrative, highlighting easily-missed elements, sometimes even reflecting on our own experiences while reading. The emotions that move characters most powerfully often relate to their psychological needs, which the social conditions of their lives prevent them from meeting or fully acknowledging. These episodes appear across multiple novels in multiple subgenres, including the marriage plot, the gothic novel, the Victorian bildungsroman, and the sensation novel. These episodes collectively reveal how eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British novelistic subgenres developed to help women and working-class readers covertly satisfy their psychological needs.

Christian Gellert's Last Christmas From "German Tales" Published by the American Publishers' Corporation【電子書籍】[ Berthold Auerbach ]
|

In "Christian Gellert's Last Christmas," Berthold Auerbach intricately weaves a poignant narrative that explores themes of nostalgia, loss, and the enduring spirit of human connection during the festive season. The novella is characterized by Auerbach's lyrical prose, which deftly captures the bittersweet essence of the titular character's reflections on his life against the backdrop of Christmas traditions. Set within the early 19th-century German literary context, the work resonates with the Romantic movement's preoccupations with sentimentality and individual experience, offering a rich tapestry of emotional depth and social critique. Berthold Auerbach, a notable figure in the landscape of German literature, was deeply influenced by his Jewish heritage and the socio-political turbulence of his time. His background as a writer who witnessed the shifting dynamics of German society informs the nuanced portrayal of Gellert, a reflection of the author'??s own contemplations on identity, belonging, and the transformative power of memory. Auerbach's ability to infuse his characters with authentic emotion and moral complexity speaks to his literary prowess and personal history. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in exploring the intersection of personal and cultural narratives during the Christmas season. And Nanny Makes Three Mothers and Nannies Tell the Truth About Work, Love, Money, and Each Other【電子書籍】[ Jessika Auerbach ]
|

From the playground to the playroom, mothers and nannies are engaged in a relationship like no other ? they are sometimes co-parents and comrades, often confidants, and much more than employer and employee. It is a complex relationship that touches on issues of love, trust, and money. It can be a wonderful collaboration between two women who care for the same child or it can be a difficult situation with unfulfilled expectations on both sides.
Mothers can be obsessed, conflicted, and confused about how to manage caregivers ? but they also must contend with how they feel about having another woman take care of their children. Caregivers love the kids, but often run into trouble dealing with mom. And Nanny Makes Three goes behind the scenes of domestic arrangements to discover what moms and nannies or au pairs are really thinking about each other, the kids, their respective jobs and their identities.
In this eye-opening book, Jessika Auerbach plumbs the depth of this unique child care relationship and presents a perspective that draws from both sides. Mothers' and caregivers' genuine and unique voices are equally represented giving a balanced view to this highly complicated, emotionally charged relationship.
Anyone who is a mother, working or not, or thinking of becoming a mother and wondering how to juggle career and children without dropping the ball somewhere along the way will gain invaluable insight from And Nanny Makes Three.
"The relationship between any working mother and the caretaker of her child involves some of the most intense, important, conflicted, and complicated interactions a woman is ever likely to have. Once a mother returns to work - full-time, part-time, any time and anywhere - it's the one relationship that almost more than any other will keep her awake at night, make her furious, desperate, grateful, and guilty.
As a mother who both loves her children and needs her job, it's also often a relationship she wishes she would never have to have. Yet from the moment it begins, it becomes hopelessly and forever entangled with her view of herself, her love of her family, and her need to support them. In this way it becomes instantly and inextricably folded into the dialogue every mother carries on within herself, with her partner, her colleagues, and her friends: If playground, cocktail party and book group conversation is anything to go by, the topic of nannies, what they do to us and what we do to them is right up there with talk about love, sex, and school waiting lists."
--from the Introduction
Jessika Auerbach was born in Germany, but grew up primarily in England. She studied at the Institut des Sciences Politiques and the Sorbonne in Paris and at Oxford University, and since that time has lived and worked as an editor and writer in New York, Connecticut, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong. Her four daughters were born on three different continents, and she and her husband remain happily in touch with almost all the nineteen nannies, au-pairs and part-time babysitters who have provided them with childcare over the years. Jewish Exiles and European Thought in the Shadow of the Third Reich Baron, Popper, Strauss, Auerbach【電子書籍】[ David Weinstein ]
|

Hans Baron, Karl Popper, Leo Strauss and Erich Auerbach were among the many German-speaking Jewish intellectuals who fled Continental Europe with the rise of Nazism in the 1930s. Their scholarship, though not normally considered together, is studied here to demonstrate how, despite their different disciplines and distinctive modes of working, they responded polemically in the guise of traditional scholarship to their shared trauma. For each, the political calamity of European fascism was a profound intellectual crisis, requiring an intellectual response which Weinstein and Zakai now contextualize, ideologically and politically. They exemplify just how extensively, and sometimes how subtly, 1930s and 1940s scholarship was used not only to explain, but to fight the political evils that had infected modernity, victimizing so many. An original perspective on a popular area of research, this book draws upon a mass of secondary literature to provide an innovative and valuable contribution to twentieth-century intellectual history.

Christmas Summary Classics
This series contains summary of Classic books such as Emma, Arne, Arabian Nights, Pride and prejudice, Tower of London, Wealth of Nations etc. Each book is specially crafted after reading complete book in less than 30 pages. One who wants to get joy of book reading especially in very less time can go for it.

BERTHOLD AUERBACH
On the Height
Berthold Auerbach, a German poet and author of Jewish descent, was born at Nordstetten, in W?rtemberg, on February 28, 1812. On the completion of his studies at the universities of T?bingen, Munich and Heidelberg he immediately devoted himself to literature. His first publication dealt with "Judaism and Recent Literature," and was to be followed by a series of novels taken from Jewish history. Of this intended series he actually published, with considerable success, "Spinoza" and "Poet and Merchant." But real fame and popularity came to him when he began to occupy himself with the life of the general people which forms the subject of his best-known works. In these later books, of which "On the Height" is perhaps the most characteristic and certainly the most famous, he revealed an unrivalled insight into the soul of the Southern German country folk, and especially of the peasants of the Black Forest and the Bavarian Alps. His descriptions are remarkable for their fresh realism, graceful style and humour. In addition to these qualities, his last books are marked by great subtlety of psychological analysis. "On the Height" was first published at Stuttgart in 1861, and has been translated into several languages. Auerbach died at Cannes on February 8, 1882, when all Germany was preparing to celebrate his 70th birthday.

Synopsis of

GODDESS OF THE FLOWERS

Xochitl (pronounced 'So She') Gonzales is a 15-year -old gorgeous street waif who is picked up by a cartel lord who gushes riches on the girl and her mother, asking only that she "train" new girls who come to his huge hacienda in exciting men, enticing them.

After witnessing the senseless murder of a soon-to-be trafficked girl, Xochitl realizes she must escape. She takes two little girls with her to the Rio Grande, but when they are too scared to follow her, she becomes a woman without a country, like a drug war version of the phrase "Neither from here or there."

Soon after her arrival in Texas, Xochitl is captured and sent to juvie where she escapes into the DEA's underground where she discovers the transport avenues for human trafficking and drug distribution. She is picked up by Guy Morton, a DEA agent who also exploits her knowledge but with whom she thinks she is in love. When he leaves her to the wiles of a competing gang, she loses faith in love. She is then picked up by a madam who takes her to her brothel and there decides to turn things around.

She calls Carlos in Mexico, realizing she had been pushed into a life of crime by him, and tells him that she is pregnant. He doesn't care, he wants the money he would have gotten trafficking the five girls. Xochitl agrees to help him transport one more group of illegals into the States if Carlos sends her mother with them and in return, she'll get him his money.

The plan goes south when the DEA (Guy has wired her purse) interrupts the exchange and Xochitl barely escapes with her mother to Murrietta, California where she tries to hide as a food worker in a mall. She delivers her son at the mall and is discovered by the cartel. In the hospital she escapes again in an Uber with the help of nurses and

when she returns to the motel where she deposited her mother until she could get work, she realizes she needs to protect her newborn son and puts him on the floor of the back seat. She grabs the Uber driver's keys and rushes up to the room where she left her mother and finds her dead. Upon leaving the room, she sees Carlos standing against the Uber, the driver dead in front of him and Xochitl goes down the stairs slowly, kisses Carlos, and grabs the gun as he gets excited. She kills him outright and his body slides down the outside of the motel wall.

Guy nstalls her as an undercover agent, offering witness protection, all charges are dropped if she will work as a double agent. But she must give up her newborn son so that he can live a good life.

Guy offers romance, Xochitl'must now train the girls to use their wits to beat their captives.

Istanbul 1940 and Global Modernity The World According to Auerbach, Tanpinar, and Edib【電子書籍】[ E. Khayyat ]
|

Istanbul 1940 and Global Modernity: The World According to Auerbach, Tanpinar, and Edib engages Erich Auerbach’s Istanbul career and his pioneering works of comparative literature in a new light. It interprets Auerbach’s works against the background of his Turkish colleagues’ analogous works that, like Auerbach’s masterpieces, were drafted at Istanbul University in the 1940s. Unlike Auerbach’s writings, which center around Western literary cultures and Christianity, these Turkish writings trace non-Western, largely Islamicate cultural histories. The critic, novelist, and poet Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar (1901?1962) and his illustrious senior, the Muslim feminist, humanist, and novelist Halide Edib (1884?1964) focused on Middle Eastern and South Asian cultural trajectories. In addition to offering groundbreaking insights into their respective cultural legacies, Auerbach, Tanpinar, and Edib elaborated extensively on the intercrossing that is their meeting place, the chiasmic space of modern literature. Interpreting their writings as the work of a collective, Istanbul 1940 and Global Modernity examines the new paths these critics opened for theorizing literary modernity, world literature, and the comparative study of literature and religion.

Nature, Politics, and the Arts Essays on Romantic Culture for Carl Woodring【電子書籍】[ Nina Auerbach ]
|

This interdisciplinary book honors Columbia professor and New York intellectual Carl Woodring. Chapters on Romantic and Victorian literary culture written by leading scholars in the field join in conversation with Woodring’s teachings on literature and visual art and his commentaries on American culture. A multiple-authored chapter of postscripts on the aesthetic range of Woodring’s intellectual interests across cultural disciplines, his contributions to English studies and his informing influence on several generations of scholars, and their areas of interest, follows. A chapter from Woodring’s unpublished autobiography, on his childhood in small-town America, then concludes the volume with an ironic retrospection on intercultural origins.

Topics addressed among the chapters include portraiture and self-fashioning, landscape art, physiognomy and caricatures, radical print ephemera, illustrated picaresque verse, social and political satire, traditions of the sublime in art and literature, transatlantic influences and aesthetics, chaos theory and the laws of thermodynamics, the Caribbean slave trade, revolutionary history, Napoleonic wars, the politics of multicultural communities, gender and race, marginalia and textual revelations, Native America, historical interchanges in curating museum shows, and contemporary American sculpture and art. Cultural figures of the nineteenth century that are featured in the discussions include Henry Adams, Beethoven, Blake, Byron, Willa Cather, Thomas Cole, Coleridge, James Fenimore Cooper, George Cruikshank, Ugo Foscolo, Washington Irving, Keats, Willibrord M?hler, George Romney, Rowlandson, Shelley, and Wordsworth.

Chapter essays, commentaries, and Carl Woodring’s unpublished writings function together in Nature, Politics, and the Arts: Essays on Romantic Culture for Carl Woodringーwith a depth of original perspectives and a multi-voiced and intercultural coherence. The book as a whole testifies to Woodring’s living and intellectually potent legacy for future students of nineteenth-century transatlantic culture and twenty-first century scholarship on literature and art.
