The Loveliest Animal Tales for Children The Cricket on the Hearth, The Tailor of Gloucester, Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, Black Beauty…【電子書籍】[ Beatrix Potter ]

'The Loveliest Animal Tales for Children' presents an enchanting array of narratives that celebrate the vibrancy and moral depth of anthropomorphic storytelling. This collection captures a spectrum of literary styles, from the whimsical to the didactic, embedding rich moral lessons within captivating fables and fairy tales. It serves as a panorama of late 19th and early 20th-century children's literature, highlighting the genre's evolution and the timeless appeal of its themes. Standout pieces explore themes of friendship, loyalty, and the human-animal bond, enriching the collection's diverse tapestry without oversimplifying its broad emotional and moral landscape. The anthology boasts contributions from luminaries like Beatrix Potter, whose delicate prose and rich illustrations have charmed generations, and L. Frank Baum, whose inventive narratives have consistently pushed the boundaries of children's fantasy literature. These authors, among others in the collection, were pivotal in shaping the Golden Age of Children's Literature, each bringing their unique cultural and personal backgrounds to bear on universally resonant themes. Their collective works not only reflect the societal attitudes of their times but also contribute to a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the interspecies relationships that are central to the genre. 'The Loveliest Animal Tales for Children' is an essential volume for readers eager to explore the depths of early children's literature through a diverse array of perspectives and writing styles. This anthology not only promises a journey through the imaginative landscapes shaped by some of the genre's pioneers but also educates and engages minds young and old. Readers are invited to rediscover these tales, experiencing the rich dialogue between different epochs and voices that each story encapsulates, bringing to life lessons that are as timeless as the tales themselves.

Black Beauty, Young Folks' Edition A Sentimental Journey Through the Eyes of a Noble Horse【電子書籍】[ Anna Sewell ]

In "Black Beauty, Young Folks' Edition," Anna Sewell employs a first-person narrative style that uniquely immerses readers in the emotional and physical experiences of a horse. This poignant work serves not only as a compelling tale of Black Beauty'??s tumultuous life'??from a well-cared-for stallion to suffering under human cruelty'??but also as a broader commentary on the treatment of animals in Victorian society. The literary context of the novel can be traced back to the rising humane movements of the late 19th century, as Sewell sought to awaken compassion and awareness among her readers about animal welfare through a narrative that is both accessible and engaging for the younger audience. Anna Sewell, born in 1820, had a lifelong affection for animals, which was intensified by her own experiences with cruelty and disability. Her passion for animal rights led her to write this seminal work, which she hoped would inspire empathy and reform among her peers. Unfortunately, Sewell passed away shortly after its publication, but her legacy endures in the powerful advocacy embedded in her storytelling. "Black Beauty, Young Folks' Edition" is highly recommended for readers of all ages who seek to deepen their understanding of compassion and ethics regarding the treatment of animals. This timeless classic not only entertains but also serves as a vital educational tool, inviting young readers to reflect on their responsibilities toward all living beings.

This use of an anthropomorphic protagonist was ground-breaking for its time. The novel follows the story of a young colt through his life, from his early carefree days with his mother on an English farm, to his difficult life pulling cabs in London, and ultimately to his happy retirement in the countryside.
This children's classic was not written for children butt "to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses"ーan influence the author attributed to an essay on animals she had read earlier by Horace Bushnell (1802?1876) entitled "Essay on Animals". Her sympathetic portrayal of the plight of working animals led to a vast outpouring of concern for animal welfare and is said to have been instrumental in abolishing the cruel practice of using the checkrein (or "bearing rein", a strap used to keep horses' heads high, fashionable in Victorian England but painful and damaging to a horse's neck). Black Beauty also contains two pages about the use of blinkers on horses, concluding that this use is likely to cause accidents at night due to interference with "the full use of" a horse's ability to "see much better in the dark than men can."
The story is narrated in the first person as an autobiographical memoir told by the titular horse named Black Beautyーbeginning with his carefree days as a colt on an English farm with his mother, to his difficult life pulling cabs in London, to his happy retirement in the country. BLACK BEAUTY (With Original Illustrations) Classic of World Literature【電子書籍】[ Anna Sewell ]

In 'Black Beauty,' Anna Sewell crafts a poignant and heartrending narrative that presents life through the eyes of a horse, emphasizing the themes of empathy, compassion, and the ethical treatment of animals. Written in the late 19th century, this classic novel employs a unique first-person perspective, allowing readers to intimately experience the trials and tribulations that the eponymous horse endures due to human cruelty and ignorance. The original illustrations enrich the reader's journey, offering a visual representation of Sewell's vivid descriptions and emotional depth, while also situating the work in the tradition of animal rights literature that emerged during the Victorian era. Anna Sewell, an English novelist with a deep personal connection to horses, penned this groundbreaking work during her own struggles with illness and social marginalization. A lifelong equestrian, Sewell's understanding of horse welfare and her advocacy for humane treatment are palpable throughout 'Black Beauty.' Her experiences and the societal attitudes of her time influenced her desire to educate readers about the complex relationships between humans and animals, positioning her as a pioneering figure in animal welfare activism. 'Black Beauty' is not just a tale for children; it is a profound exploration of moral responsibility that resonates across generations. For readers interested in themes of empathy, social justice, and the interconnectedness of life, Sewell's work offers a timeless reflection that demands both intellectual engagement and emotional investment. This edition, featuring original illustrations, invites a new audience to experience a transformative narrative that continues to inspire compassion for all living beings.

The first place that I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it. Some shady trees leaned over it, and rushes and water-lilies grew at the deep end. Over the hedge on one side we looked into a plowed field, and on the other we looked over a gate at our master's house, which stood by the roadside; at the top of the meadow was a grove of fir trees, and at the bottom a running brook overhung by a steep bank. While I was young I lived upon my mother's milk, as I could not eat grass. In the daytime I ran by her side, and at night I lay down close by her. When it was hot we used to stand by the pond in the shade of the trees, and when it was cold we had a nice warm shed near the grove.
Anna Sewell (30 Mar 1820 ? 25 Apr 1878) was an author of children's books, best known for the classic novel Black Beauty. Sewell was born in into a devoutly Quaker family. When she was fourteen, she slipped and severely injured both of her ankles, she was never able to walk normally ever again. While seeking to improve her health in Europe, Sewell encountered various writers, artists, and philosophers, to which her previous background had not exposed her. “Black Beauty” is a children’s novel. It revolves around a horse, “telling” its own biography to the reader by itself. Beauty’s story is full of dramatic turns and thrilling events. This book will show you an eloquent picture of XIX century England and give a better understanding of horses.

In 'Black Beauty,' Anna Sewell presents a poignant narrative that unfolds through the eyes of a horse, chronicling the trials and tribulations faced by equines in Victorian England. Written in an autobiographical style, the novel combines rich, emotive prose with keen observations of animal welfare, revealing the cruelty and kindness encountered by its protagonist. Sewell's work is notable for its role in the animal advocacy movement, offering deep psychological insights into the relationship between humans and animals, and challenging societal norms regarding animal treatment in a time when industrial progress often overshadowed ethical considerations. Anna Sewell, though she wrote only this singular masterpiece, infused her own experiences of ill health and her fondness for horses into the text. Born in 1820, Sewell's intimate understanding of the suffering of horses-alongside her knowledge of social issues-fortified her resolve to advocate for their better treatment. The inspiration for the novel stemmed from her desire to shed light on the maltreatment of horses while also addressing broader themes of empathy and compassion. 'Black Beauty' remains a timeless classic, rich with moral undertones and reflective of the complexities of human-animal relationships. It is essential reading for anyone interested in literature that advocates for social justice or seeks a deeper understanding of empathy's role in our interactions with the natural world.

One of the most celebrated and enduringly popular animal stories, 'Black Beauty' was originally written as an appeal for the humane treatment of horses. This suspenseful and deeply moving account of a horse's experiences at the hands of many owners is retold in this classic taleー some, sensitive riders who treated him gently; others, cruel drivers who thoughtlessly inflicted lasting damage.

It is a compelling tale of a spirited young Thoroughbred that captured the hearts of readers throughout Victorian England when it was first published in 1877. Anna Sewell's beloved classic reveals as much about human conduct and the social ills of the time as it does about the treatment of animals.

Animal lovers of all ages will cherish this memorable story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Anna Sewell was a kind and generous woman whose great love for horses and desire to see them better treated resulted in the most celebrated animal story of the nineteenth century.

Born into a strict Quaker family who lived at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, she was brought up to believe in the importance of self-reliance, moral responsibility and 'tender consideration for the Creatures of God'. From an early age she developed a strong love of animals and abhorred any form of cruelty towards them. She seemed to have a natural affinity with horses, and the great knowledge of horsemanship evident in 'Black Beauty' was born from a lifetime's experience.

Anna received her education at home from her mother, who as well as instilling in her a sense of duty and religion also filled the house with music, painting and poetryーshe was herself an accomplished ballad-writerーand Anna soon proved a capable pianist and artist. When she was fourteen, Anna, who already suffered from a crippling bone disease, had a fall which left her an invalid for the rest of her life. By her mid-thirties she was no longer able to get around by herself and relied on a pony cart to transport her. Characteristically she never used a whip on her own horses, and one of her intentions with Black Beauty was to 'induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses'.

Confined to her room through ill-health, Anna started writing Black Beauty in 1871 but later abandoned the project until 1876. Afraid that she would not live to see the book published she worked laboriously on it despite failing health. Her mother found a publisher for the book and a delighted Anna saw her work in print in November 1877. She died five months later and was buried at the family plot near Old Catton in Norfolk. What Anna did not live to see was the effect her 'little book' has had on the millions of people around the world who have read it. It has been translated into many languages and there have been several attempts at filming it. As Anna hoped, Black Beauty has exercised great influence on the treatment of animals.

TOP 10 BESTSELLERS OF GENERAL PRESS:

ISBN ー Title

Think and Grow Rich

The Complete Works of Charles Dickens (Illustrated Edition): All 15 novels, short stories, poems and plays

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Mein Kampf: My Struggle

Best Russian Short Stories

The Art of War

The Art of Public Speaking Carnegie

The Greatest Short Stories of Leo Tolstoy Tolstoy

The Complete Sherlock Holmes: All 56 Stories & 4 Novels

The Complete Works of Kahlil Gibran: All poems and short stories

The Complete Works of Jane Austen: All novels, short stories, letters and poems

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare: All 37 plays, 160 sonnets and 5 poetry

The Science of Getting Rich: Discover the Secrets to Wealth
