Oliver Twist is an orphan who starts his life in a workhouse and is then sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal, Fagin… A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. David Copperfield is a fatherless boy who is sent to lodge with his housekeeper's family after his mother remarries, but when his mother dies he decides to run away… Hard Times is set in the fictional city of Coketown and it is centered around utilitarian and industrial influences on Victorian society. A Tale of Two Cities depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same period. Great Expectations depicts the personal growth and development of an orphan nicknamed Pip in Kent and London in the early to mid-19th century. Bleak House ? legal thriller based on true events.
The classic Dickens novel. According to Wikipedia: "Charles John Huffam Dickens, 1812 1870), pen-name "Boz", was one of the most popular English novelists of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Critics George Gissing and G. K. Chesterton championed Dickens's mastery of prose, his endless invention of unique, clever personalities, and his powerful social sensibilities, but fellow writers such as George Henry Lewes, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf faulted his work for sentimentality, implausible occurrences, and grotesque characterizations. The popularity of Dickens's novels and short stories has meant that they have never gone out of print Many of Dickens's novels first appeared in periodicals and magazines in serialized formーa popular format for fiction at the timeーand, unlike many other authors who completed entire novels before serial production commenced, Dickens often composed his works in parts, in the order in which they were meant to appear. Such a practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by one minor "cliffhanger" after another, to keep the public looking forward to the next installment."

The story is divided into two sections which meet in the latter part of the work but both relate to the Botallack mine in South Cornwall. The first involves a group of Russian students who defect to the West seeking political asylum from the British Government. However the incident causes international dissent from the Russian government, to the embarrassment of the British government and the students are hidden away in a remote spot in Cornwall until the dust dies down. Ivan becomes their leader of the group and he goes to Plymouth to meet with a Member of Parliament but after being given a load of political nonsense, he storms off and decides to go his own way. However, on the night before he went to Plymouth Ivan slept with Anna. She becomes pregnant and has a son but Ivan knows nothing about it until she writes to him to tell him. In the meantime, he comes into contact with Elsie, a widow living in a slum property, and he lives there with her and her son but he treats her badly, takes all her savings and eventually leaves her. He meets up with James, a mining consultant, who employs him to help him buy Botallack mine through the Stannary Court. On the other side of the story, Sadler, a bank manager, is visited by Wesley Morris, a trader who looks like a tramp with an old fur coat and a battered trilby hat. Morris wants to buy the mine and has come for a bank loan. Sadler becomes interested in being a part of it but when negotiations occur for the sale, he discovers that Morris won an option to buy the mine in a poker game. There are numerous discussions with various parties and lots of negotiation until Morris reveals that the Government is interested in using a half-mile long tunnel at the mine, which goes out under the Atlantic Ocean, to deposit nuclear waste. The knowledge of this upsets the local miners and a plan to ensure that it happens takes place. Sadler has no money so he decided to steal it from dormant accounts at the bank in the hope that he can pay it all back before it’s discovered. The Russian students are sent to the mine to clear the levels which they resent it very much. However, an explosion takes place and they are all drowned in the mine. Many years later, Anna dies and contact is made with Ivan for him to go and see his son. He agrees to do so and is nervous all the way on the journey to Cornwall but they eventually meet each other.

|

In 'Bleak House,' Charles Dickens masterfully weaves a complex tapestry of Victorian society, exposing the pervasive impacts of the legal system through the lens of the infamous case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce. The novel is notable for its innovative narrative structure, featuring multiple perspectives that enhance the depth of character development and thematic exploration. Dickens employs his hallmark blend of satire and social critique, vividly portraying the struggles of the lower classes while critiquing the inefficacy and absurdity of the judiciary. The book reflects the burgeoning awareness of social injustices and the need for legal reform, emblematic of Dickens's broader concerns with the human condition in the industrial age. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) emerged as one of the foremost literary figures of his time, drawing from his own experiences of poverty and social strife to illuminate the plight of the underprivileged. His deep-seated empathy for the disadvantaged is evident throughout 'Bleak House,' as he synthesizes various elements of his life, including his early ancestry as a child laborer and the psychological scars of financial instability. A staunch advocate for social reform, Dickens used his pen as a weapon to effect change in the unjust practices of his world. 'Bleak House' is an essential read for anyone interested in the intersection of literature and social justice. Dickens's poignant critique of the failings of the legal system remains strikingly relevant today. Readers will find themselves not only immersed in the rich, character-driven narrative but also prompted to reflect on the implications of a society marked by inequity and neglect. This novel is an invitation to delve into the depths of human compassion and societal critique, making it a profound addition to any literary canon.

When word comes to Camelot that Sir Tristram has died in Brittany of wounds suffered in a skirmish, and that his longtime mistress, La Belle Isolde, Queen of Cornwall, has subsequently died herself of a broken heart, Queen Guinevere and her trusted lady Rosemounde immediately suspect that there is more to the story of the lovers' deaths than they are being told. It is up to Merlin and his faithful assistant, Gildas of Cornwall, to find the truth behind the myths and half-truths surrounding these untimely deaths. They take ship to Brittany to investigate, and find themselves stymied by the uncooperative attitudes of Tristram's close friend Kaherdin, lord of the city; his sister and Tristram's wife Isolde of the White Hands; and Brangwen, La Belle Isolde's faithful lady-in-waiting. The case is complicated by the facts that King Mark of Cornwall is Gildas's own liege lord, and that Duke Hoel, Lord of Brittany, is King Arthur's close ally and father of the lady Rosemounde, who urges Gildas to clear the name of her half-sister, Isolde of the White hands, whom gossip has implicated in Tristram's untimely death. By the time they are finally able to uncover the truth, Gildas and Merlin have lost one companion and are in danger of losing their own lives.
