Je lui ?crivis donc, chaque semaine, jusqu’? la mi-f?vrier, des articles sous le titre de : Le XVIII brumaire de Louis Bonaparte. Entre temps, le plan primitif de Weydemeyer ?choua. Il n’en publia pas moins, au printemps de 1852, une revue mensuelle : La R?volution, dont mon ≪ XVIII brumaire ≫ remplit le second num?ro. Quelques centaines d’exemplaires prirent le chemin de l’Allemagne sans cependant ?tre ? proprement parler en librairie. Un libraire allemand, radical avanc?, auquel j’en offris la vente, r?pondit ? une ≪ pr?tention aussi d?plac?e ≫ par un effroi bien vertueux.＜/p＞ ＜p＞On voit donc, par ces donn?es, que le pr?sent ?crit est n? sous la pression directe des ?v?nements. La mati?re historique qu’il contient ne d?passe pas le mois de f?vrier 1852. Sa r??dition actuelle est due en partie aux demandes du libraire et, en partie aussi, ? l’insistance de mes amis d’Allemagne.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Des ?crits qui, ? peu pr?s ? la m?me ?poque que le mien, traitaient le m?me sujet, deux seuls sont dignes de remarque : Napol?on le Petit, de Victor Hugo et le Coup d’?tat, de Proudhon.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Victor Hugo se borne ? lancer une invective am?re et spirituelle contre l’?diteur responsable du coup d’?tat. L’?v?nement en lui-m?me lui para?t ?tre un coup de tonnerre dans un ciel serein. Il n’y voit que l’acte de violence d’un individu isol?. Il ne remarque pas qu’il grandit ainsi le personnage au lieu de le diminuer, en lui attribuant une force d’initiative personnelle sans exemple dans l’histoire universelle. Proudhon, de son c?t?, essaie de montrer que le coup d’?tat est le r?sultat d’un d?veloppement historique ant?rieur. Cependant, la construction historique du coup d’?tat se change inconsciemment chez lui en une apologie historique du h?ros du coup d’?tat. Il tombe ainsi dans la faute de nos historiens soi-disant objectifs. Pour moi, je montre que la Lutte des classes en France a cr?? des circonstances et des situations telles, qu’elles ont permis ? un personnage m?diocre et grotesque de jouer un r?le h?ro?que.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Un remaniement de l’?uvre pr?sente lui aurait enlev? sa couleur propre. Je me suis donc born? ? corriger les fautes d’impression et ? supprimer des allusions qui ne seraient plus comprises actuellement.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Je terminais mon ?crit par ces mots : ≪ Mais si le manteau imp?rial tombe enfin sur les ?paules de Louis Bonaparte, la statue de bronze de Napol?on sera pr?cipit?e du haut de la colonne Vend?me. ≫ Cette conclusion s’est d?j? r?alis?e.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Le colonel Charras a ouvert le feu contre le culte napol?onien par son ouvrage sur la campagne de 1815. Depuis et surtout dans ces derni?res ann?es, la litt?rature fran?aise en se servant des armes que lui fournissaient l’histoire, la critique, la satire et l’esprit a donn? le coup de gr?ce ? la l?gende napol?onienne. Hors de France, cette rupture avec les croyances traditionnelles du peuple, cette ?norme r?volution intellectuelle a ?t? peu remarqu?e et encore moins comprise.＜/p＞ ＜p＞J’esp?re enfin que mon ?crit contribuera ? faire renoncer au terme c?sarisme, devenu classique, courant aujourd’hui, surtout en Allemagne. En ?tablissant ainsi cette analogie historique toute superficielle, on oublie le principal, on ne se souvient pas que dans l’ancienne Rome, la lutte des classes ne s’?tendait qu’? une minorit? privil?gi?e ; elle se poursuivait entre le riche libre et le pauvre libre, alors que la grande masse des producteurs, les esclaves, ne servaient que de pi?destal passif ? cette lutte. On oublie l’importante expression de Sismondi : le prol?tariat romain vivait aux d?pens de la soci?t?, tandis que la soci?t? moderne vil aux d?pens du prol?tariat. Les conditions mat?rielles, ?conomiques, de la lutte des classes dans l’antiquit? et dans les temps modernes sont tout ? fait autres. Aussi les formes politiques qui en d?coulent ne se ressemblent-elles pas davantage que l’archev?que de Cantorb?ry et le grand pr?tre Samuel.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Londres, 23 juin 1869.＜/p＞ ＜p＞KARL MARX. Cela nous prouve que l’opuscule n’a en rien perdu de sa valeur. En fait, c’est une ?uvre de g?nie, imm?diatement apr?s l’?v?nement qui a surpris le monde politique comme un coup de tonnerre dans un ciel serein, ?v?nement que les uns ont poursuivi de leurs mal?dictions, des cris que leur arrachait leur vertueuse indignation, que d’autres ont accept? en punition de leurs erreurs et parce qu’il les sauvait de la R?volution, ?v?nement qui a stup?fait chacun et qu’aucun n’a compris. Imm?diatement apr?s lui, Marx publia cet expos? con?u sous une forme br?ve et ?pigrammatique il expliquait la marche des ?v?nements survenus en France depuis les journ?es de F?vrier, en d?voilait la trame, et, au cours de ce travail, ne se sentait pas oblig? de traiter le h?ros du coup d’?tat autrement que par le m?pris qu’il avait si bien m?rit?. Le tableau ?tait fait de main de ma?tre. Toutes les r?v?lations faites depuis ont prouv? une fois de plus avec quelle fid?lit? il r?fl?chissait la r?alit?. Cette compr?hension ?minente de l’histoire contemporaine, cette intelligence claire des ?v?nements, au moment m?me de leur apparition, est en r?alit? sans exemple.
