Excerpt: ““The thing seems impossible!” “Yet it’s true.” “You mean to tell me thatーー” I mean to tell you that Mrs. de Puyster van Dietrich, who retired to her room in this hotel last night at eleven o’clock, was not there this morning when her maid went to call her, and that her doors were all bolted and locked, with the keys inside.” “What about the windows?” “Mrs. van Dietrich’s rooms are on the fourth floor.” “Well?” “She did not jump out, Mallory, if that’s what you mean. They overlook the sea, and there are jagged rocks immediately beneath her windows. She would surely have been killed if she had gone that way. Anyhow, she is a well-balanced woman, who enjoys life, and a multimillionaire. Why should she commit suicide?” “I don’t know why she should, Savage. That’s nothing. Seventy-five out of a hundred suicides seem to have no good reason behind themーuntil investigation is made afterward.” “She did not jump out of the window, I tell you.” “Perhaps she fell out,” suggested Mallory, sticking to his guns. “She neither jumped nor fell out,” snapped the other. “The rocks would tell the story if she had.”"

It was about nine o’clock one evening in October, and both detectives were seated in the library of Nick Carter’s spacious residence in Madison Avenue. “Hello!” Nick now called quite sharply. “Hello!” No answer. “What’s the trouble?” Chick inquired. “Don’t you get a reply?” “No, Chick, and that’s not the worst of it,” Nick said quite gravely. “Why so? Carter's Way A No-Nonsense Method for Designing Your Own Super Stylish Home【電子書籍】[ Carter Oosterhouse ]

Carter Oosterhouse knows how real people live and how intimidating home design can be. With his reassuring, “you can do it” attitude, he goes out of his way to show readers how to create realistic design elements that they can implement with basic tools and a little DIY experience. His mission is to bring people’s imaginations to life. The design features he constructs use materials easily found, are budget-conscious, and whenever possible environmentally friendly. In Carter’s Way, he decodes the time-tested principles of design, using specific examples and stunning photos to visually illustrate his points.

Each chapter will cover a different area of the house, acknowledging the diversity of layouts in today’s homes. For example, one chapter will focus on spaces for cooking, eating, and socializing to appeal both to people with a formal dining area and those with more open floor plans, with a design that is about comfort, entertaining, and practicality. Other chapters include: intimate bedroom spaces featuring beautiful and efficient storage for a sensual environment that becomes a sanctuary; living/family rooms with the kind of versatility that allows them to convert from game-playing rumpus rooms to elegant cocktail party spaces; luxurious bathrooms that provide a spa-like getaway from stress while also conserving energy and water; home offices/entryways/laundry rooms; and outdoor spaces that can serve as two- or three-season rooms for entertaining and relaxing.

[excerpt]

I’m writing this book because of all the people who come up to me at events, or write me, saying things like, “I wish I could make my kitchen look like the one on your last show,” or, “If only I could have you work on my living room!” You don’t need me in person. You don’t need anybody else. You need my perspective and my method. My method is what I call “Carter’s Way.” It’s a process that has worked for me in dozens of different rooms and homes. I still am hoping to hear something of more definite significance.” One minute passed. It brought no sound over the wire. The silence then was broken by a voice which Nick knew must be that of the exchange operator addressing the person who had rung him up. “Did you get him?” No answer. Nick waited a moment longer, then cried abruptly: “Hello, central!” “Well?” “This is Nick Carter talking. I can get no reply from the party who rang me up. What’s the trouble?” “There should be none. The circuit is not broken.” “Did you hear any unusual sound after making the connection, as if the telephone had been dropped, or as if something occurred?” “I did not. I will try to get the party.” “Do so.” Nick waited and heard the operator cry repeatedly: “Hello! Hello! Hello!” No answerーstill no answer. No sound so much as suggesting what had occurred, what fateful deed had been done, or what horror might then be in progress, whence the mysterious telephone call had come. The stillness over the wire was like that of death itself. Had death, indeed, stilled the voice heard for a fleeting moment by the detective, the voice that had uttered his name, as if a cry of appeal had been cut short when it left the lips of the speaker? The operator spoke again. “Mr. Carter.” “Well?” “There is something wrong. The circuit still is complete, but I can get no reply. The person who called you up evidently has left the telephone, but has not hung up the receiver.”

Excerpt: "“You say he cannot travel to-day, doctor?” “Impossible, Mr. Carter!” “He would be in a drawing-room on the Pullman, and every care would be taken to make the journey easy for him.” The surgeon shook his head. “He would have his own servant, Phillips, to attend him,” persisted Nick Carter. “This is Prince Marcos, you know, Doctor Sloane. You’ve heard of him, and I’ve explained that it is essential for him to be in the country of which he is the ruler by the eighteenth of this month. He has only five days now.” “I am sorry, butーー” “He could make it in the five days, by continuous traveling,” still pressed the detective. “I realize that he would be taking some risk. But when it is considered that the very existence of his country depends on his getting there by a certain date, I doubt whether any one has the moral right to stop him.” Doctor Sloane shrugged his shoulders. Landon Carter's Uneasy Kingdom Revolution and Rebellion on a Virginia Plantation【電子書籍】[ Rhys Isaac ]

Landon Carter, a Virginia planter, left behind one of the most revealing of all American diaries. In this astonishingly rich biography, Isaac mines this remarkable document--and many other sources--to reconstruct Carter's interior world as it plunged into revolution. The aging patriarch, though a fierce supporter of American liberty, was deeply troubled by the rebellion and its threat to established order. His diary, originally a record of plantation business, began to fill with angry stories of revolt in his own little kingdom. Carter writes at white heat, his words sputtering from his pen as he documents the terrible rupture that the Revolution meant to him. Indeed, Carter felt in his heart that he was chronicling a world in decline, the passing of the order that his revered father had bequeathed to him. Not only had Landon's king betrayed his subjects, but Landon's own household betrayed him: his son showed insolent defiance, his daughter Judith eloped with a forbidden suitor, all of his slaves conspired constantly, and eight of them made an armed exodus to freedom. The seismic upheaval he helped to start had crumbled the foundations of Carter's own home. In Landon Carter's Uneasy Kingdom Rhys Isaac unfolds not only the life, but also the mental world of our countrymen in a long-distant time. Moreover, in this presentation of Landon Carter's passionate narratives, the diarist becomes an arresting new character in the world's literature, a figure of Shakespearean proportions, the Lear of his own tragic kingdom. This long-awaited work will be seen both as a major contribution to Revolution history and a triumph of the art of biography.

He is an antisocial personality disordered individual who takes his victims into Mexico to kill them. He meets his demise at the hands of his wife who is fed up with his abuse. The murderer in the third case is a schizophrenic man whose dead aunt drives his killing spree. He kills his victims by cutting the spinal cord at the level of the first or "axis" vertebrae and is thus known as "the Axis Killer." The fourth case is about a delusional person who kills for a perceived need for revenge against the police. This killer is known as "the Revenge Killer." The book concludes after Dan chases "The Assassin" over a cliff. The antagonist's obsession for catching serial killers is gradually replaced by love for his beautiful, blond, Swedish, physical therapist. The story follows the couple from their introduction to the development of a romantic relationship,

A Network of Crime: Nick Carter's Tangled Skein【電子書籍】[ Nicholas Carter ]

“Hello! hello! This is Frank Mantell talking. I want Mr. CarterーNick Carter. Is he there?” Patsy Garvan, the detective’e’s junior assistant, then alone in the library of Nick’k’s Madison Avenue residence, was the recipient of the above telephone communication. It came over the wire in tones reflecting the haste and excitement of the speaker. Patsy remembered him, a son of the senior partner of the firm of Mantell & Goulard, whose big department store in Sixth Avenue had recently been wrecked by a long series of mysterious robberies committed by the junior partner, Gaston Goulard, resulting in a round-up of the criminal and his confederates by Nick and his assistants, all of which had transpired several months before. “No,” Patsy replied. “Nick Carter is not here. He is out on a case.” “Is Chick Carter there?” Mantell then hurriedly asked, referring to the detective’e’s chief assistant. “He is not, Mr. Mantell. This is Garvan talking.” “Ah, yes, PatsyーI remember,” was the reply. “When will Nick return?” “I don’n’t know. He went with Chick about an hour ago to investigate a big murder case in Manhattanville. He may not return until evening.” “Dear me, I’I’m sorry to hear that. I am very anxious to see him.” “On business?” “Yes. Very important business. There is half a million dollars involved.” “Great Scott! Can I be of any help to you?” “Not unless you can enable me to see Nick himself. Time is very valuable.” “I can do that, perhaps,” said Patsy. “I can learn from police headquarters just where he has gone. You can go there and see him, orーwhere are you phoning from, Mr. Mantell?” “From the office of Gray’y’s wharf, East River. I cannot explain by telephone. Ifーー” “One moment,” Patsy interrupted. “Have you a taxi?” “I have my touring car.” “Good enough! Join me here as quickly as possible. I’I’ll find out in the meantime where Nick is engaged. We’e’ll go there and see him.” “Thanks, Garvan, a thousand times. I’I’ll be with you in ten minutes.” It then was about ten o’o’clock in the morning. One hour earlier, complying with an urgent telephone request from the police headquarters, Nick Carter and Chick arrived in the detective’e’s touring car at a dwelling in one of the outskirts of Manhattanville, the scene of a shocking crime evidently committed the previous night. It was an attractive wooden house somewhat back from the street and occupying a corner lot. It was in a quiet and entirely reputable locality, though somewhat thinly settled, and it was about the last neighborhood in which such a crime would have been expected. More than a score of people had collected on the opposite side of the street, and were viewing the house with feelings of morbid curiosity. They were prevented from coming nearer, however, or encroaching upon the surrounding grounds, by policemen who had been stationed on both the front and side gates. A police sergeant who was standing with an elderly man on the front veranda recognized the two detectives when the touring car stopped at the house, and he beckoned for them to enter that way. “We have been waiting for you, Mr. Carter,” he said respectfully, when Nick came up the gravel walk with Chick. “This is Doctor Boyden, who lives in the third house from here. I sent for him a few minutes ago, thinking you might want his opinion as to the length of time the two men have been dead, as well as any other information he can give you.” “There certainly is a deep mystery here, aside from the shocking crime, Mr. Carter, judging from the appearance of things in the house,” said the physician, after shaking hands with both detectives. “It looks like a veritable slaughter pen. There must have been an awful fight here.”
