In "James Cutbush, an American Chemist, 1788-1823," Edgar Fahs Smith provides a comprehensive and engaging biography of James Cutbush, a pivotal yet often overlooked figure in the early American chemistry landscape. Smith meticulously examines Cutbush's contributions to the field, particularly in the burgeoning context of American scientific practice during the early 19th century. Through a blend of rigorous research and narrative flair, Smith illuminates Cutbush's innovative experiments and his role in the establishment of chemistry as a distinct discipline in the United States, situating his work within a broader historical framework of scientific inquiry and educational reform at that time. Edgar Fahs Smith, a noted chemist and historian of science, is renowned for his efforts in chronicling the evolution of chemistry in American academia. His extensive background in chemistry and his position at the University of Pennsylvania provided him with a unique lens through which to explore the significance of Cutbush'??s contributions. Smith's scholarship is deeply informed by his own experiences in a rapidly evolving scientific community, reflecting a passionate commitment to preserving the legacy of early American scientists. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of science, particularly in how early chemists navigated the challenges of an emerging field. Smith'??s vivid portrayal of Cutbush not only enriches our understanding of American scientific history but also inspires contemporary readers to appreciate the foundational work of early chemists.

Symmetry through the Eyes of a Chemist【電子書籍】[ Magdolna Hargittai ]
|

It is gratifying to launch the third edition of our book. Its coming to life testi?es about the task it has ful?lled in the service of the com- nity of chemical research and learning. As we noted in the Prefaces to the ?rst and second editions, our book surveys chemistry from the point of view of symmetry. We present many examples from ch- istry as well as from other ?elds to emphasize the unifying nature of the symmetry concept. Our aim has been to provide aesthetic pl- sure in addition to learning experience. In our ?rst Preface we paid tribute to two books in particular from which we learned a great deal; they have in?uenced signi?cantly our approach to the subject matter of our book. They are Weyl’s classic, Symmetry, and Shubnikov and Koptsik’s Symmetry in Science and Art. The structure of our book has not changed. Following the Int- duction (Chapter 1), Chapter 2 presents the simplest symmetries using chemical and non-chemical examples. Molecular geometry is discussed in Chapter3. The next four chapters present gro- theoretical methods (Chapter 4) and, based on them, discussions of molecular vibrations (Chapter 5), electronic structures (Chapter 6), and chemical reactions (Chapter 7). For the last two chapters we return to a qualitative treatment and introduce space-group sym- tries (Chapter 8), concluding with crystal structures (Chapter 9). For the third edition we have further revised and streamlined our text and renewed the illustrative material.

|

This biography of Fritz Haber, now abridged by the author and translated into English, illuminates the life of one of the most gifted yet controversial figures of the twentieth century. Haber, a brilliant physical chemist, carried out pioneering research in electrochemistry and thermodynamics and won the Nobel Prize for his synthesis of ammonia, a process essential for synthetic fertilizer ー and for the explosives Germany needed in World War I.

An ardent patriot, Haber also developed chemical weapons. Believing them to be no worse than other types of warfare, he directed the first true gas attack in military history from the front lines in Ypres, Belgium, in 1915. His nationalism also spurred his failed attempt to extract gold from seawater, in hopes of paying off Germany’s huge war reparations.

Yet Haber, a Jew by birth, was exiled from his homeland in 1933 by the Nazis, and died the following year never knowing the full dire effects of his work, as Zyklon B, a gas studied in his institute around 1920, was used to murder prisoners in concentration camps, including members of Haber’s own family.

With the help of previously unpublished documents and sources, Dietrich Stoltzenberg explores Haber’s personal life, the breakdown of his two marriages, his efforts to develop industrial and political support for scientific study in Germany, his directorship of the Kaiser Wilhelm (now Max Planck) Institute, his ethical struggles in times of war, and more.

“A much needed and fine new biography of Haber” ー Oren Harman, The New Republic

“This exhaustive biography, first published in Germany in 1996, captures Haber’s complexity well. Based on diligent research, it offers significant detail on Haber’s professional life for both specialists and generalists... Stoltzenberg’s work is perhaps as rich a biography as can be written on Haber’s achievements... This is an excellent biography... [based on] extensive primary research... The result is a work that brings to light important facets not just of the life of Fritz Haber but of several decades of evolution of the German scientific milieu.” ー Guillaume P. De Syon, H-Net

Reviews of the German edition, winner of the Author’s Prize of the German Chemical Society:

“[An] excellent biography” ー Max Perutz, The New York Review of Books

“Stoltzenberg has written a fine biography of this deeply flawed individual... [This] sympathetic and comprehensive account... should appeal to general readers as well as to historians and all those interested in the social responsibility of science.” ー David Cahan, Nature

“[S]ucceeds admirably in enlivening the many facets of this remarkable man and his extraordinary career as a creative academic, a leading member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, a shrewd businessman, and an influential advisor to various governments in Berlin. But Stoltzenberg is equally adept at presenting Haber the private man, who had to fight prejudice, endure two broken marriages, and, finally, emigration when the Nazis came to power in 1933... Stoltzenberg’s superb biography, which leaves little to be desired, is the remarkable achievement of a professional chemist turned historian.” ー Peter Alter, Ambix

“The book demonstrates Haber’s versatility as well as his enormous but not inexhaustible vitality... [T]he most detailed, best documented portrait we have of a remarkable and still controversial scientist.” ー Jeffrey A. Johnson, Isis

“Haber has finally found his ideal biographer in Dietrich Stoltzenberg, who possesses impeccable credentials for the task... [A] product of exemplary scholarship.” ー George Kauffman, Annals of Science

During his long career, the English chemist and entrepreneur, Sir William Crookes, was able to make significant contributions to photography, chemistry, physics, agricultural science, public health, and scientific journalism. Historians of science have recognized Crookes for his brilliance as an experimental researcher and his controversial investigations into spiritualistic phenomena; however, he made his living primarily as a science journalist and editor. His interests were eclectic, ranging from pure and applied science, economic and practical problems, and psychic research. He is credited with the discovery of the element thallium, investigations of cathode rays, and invention of the radiometer. He held patents on early light bulbs and his improvements in vacuum pump technology were key to the development of electric lighting and the discovery of the X-ray. His wide range of interests and prolific publication of his and others’ works made him a well-known personality within the late Victorian era scientific community. By the turn of the twentieth-century he was regarded as Britain’s leading scientist.

“Sir William Crookes: A Short Biography” reveals the life and times of one of the great scientific minds of the nineteenth-century.

30-Minute Book Series
This is the 35th book in the 30-Minute Book Series. Books in this series are fast-paced, accurate, and cover the story in as much detail as a short book possibly can. Most people complete each book in less than an hour, which makes the books in the series a perfect companion for your lunch hour or a little down time.

About the Author
Doug West is a retired engineer and an experienced non-fiction writer with several books to his credit. His writing interests are general, with special expertise in history, science, biographies, and “How To” topics. From Immigrant to Inventor: Autobiography of the Serbian-American Physicist, Chemist and Pioneer of Electrical Transmission and the Long-Distance Telephone Line【電子書籍】[ Michael Idvorsky Pupin ]
|

From Immigrant to Inventor is the inspiring autobiography of Michael Idvorsky Pupin, chronicling his extraordinary journey from a modest childhood in rural Serbia to becoming a distinguished scientist, inventor, and professor in the United States. Originally published in 1923, the book offers a personal and reflective narrative of perseverance, intellectual discovery, and the immigrant experience during a transformative era in American history.
Pupin begins with memories of his upbringing in a Serbian village, where curiosity about the natural world first sparked his lifelong passion for learning. He then recounts his emigration to the United States as a young man, arriving with little more than determination and dreams of an education. The narrative unfolds with his struggles to adapt to a new culture, working tirelessly to fund his studies and overcome the challenges of poverty.
Central to the story is Pupin's education at Columbia University and further scientific training in Europe, where he immersed himself in physics, mathematics, and engineering. The book traces his groundbreaking inventions in telecommunication and electrical transmissionーwork that played a pivotal role in advancing wireless communication and earning him numerous patents and accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for this very memoir.
Beyond recounting his personal achievements, Pupin reflects on the broader themes of science, innovation, and the opportunities available to immigrants in America. He emphasizes the importance of education, hard work, and resilience, inspiring readers with his belief that adversity can be a catalyst for greatness.
A blend of memoir, science, and philosophy, From Immigrant to Inventor offers a timeless exploration of the immigrant spirit and the transformative power of knowledge. It is a compelling read for those interested in the history of technology, the immigrant experience, and the life of one of the most influential inventors of the 20th century.

Acid Rain and the Rise of the Environmental Chemist in Nineteenth-Century Britain The Life and Work of Robert Angus Smith【電子書籍】[ Peter Reed ]
|

Robert Angus Smith (1817-1884) was a Scottish chemist and a leading investigator into what came to be known as 'acid rain'. This study of his working life, contextualized through discussion of his childhood, education, beliefs, family, interests and influences sheds light on the evolving understanding of sanitary science during the nineteenth century. Born in Glasgow and initially trained for a career in the Church of Scotland, Smith instead went on to study chemistry in Germany under Justus von Liebig. On his return to Manchester in the 1840s, Smith's strong Calvinist faith lead him to develop a strong concern for the insanitary environmental conditions in Manchester and other industrial towns in Britain. His appointment as Inspector of the Alkali Administration in 1863 enabled him to marry his social concerns and his work as an analytical chemist, and this book explores his role as Inspector of the Administration from its inception through battles with chemical manufacturers in the courts, to the struggle to widen and tighten the regulatory framework as other harmful chemical nuisances became known. This study of Smith’s life and work provides an important background to the way that 'chemical' came to have such negative connotations in the century before publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. It also offers a fascinating insight into the changing landscape of British politics as regulation and enforcement of the chemical industries came to be seen as necessary, and is essential reading for historians of science, technology and industry in the nineteenth century, as well as environmental historians seeking background context to the twentieth-century environmental movements.

Each book in the trilogy is a page turner."

5.0 out of 5 stars

Excellent Conclusion to a Riveting Thriller

"In this third act of the trilogy, this story evolved into a crime thriller in a way I didn't see coming from the beginning of this journey, and it's every bit as tense and exciting as you could possibly want it to be. Where as the first book was heavier on the procedural side of the law (mixed with horror elements), and the second delved deep into the darkness of this hunt, the third dwells more in a supernatural realm between religion and voodoo, with a detour in the perverse world of human trafficking (and pony-girl shows). It's a dark, daring book that will keep you hooked to the last word, that is, if you can stomach it. All in all, this is a fantastic conclusion to a harrowing tale, and I can't wait for the next Van Waring volume."

Winner of the Minnesota Book Award

Recipient of the Excellence in Iowa History Award

??The untold story of the humble man whose scientific innovation helped end World War II

In February 1942, leaders of the Manhattan Project had a problem: to prove a controlled nuclear chain reaction was possible, they needed pure uranium-tons of it and in less than ten months. With only a few grams in existence, there was little hope anyone could achieve such a feat. Harley Wilhelm, a chemistry professor at Iowa State College, rose to the challenge.

A sharecropper's son and former college basketball coach, Wilhelm was an unlikely character to impact the course of world history. Nevertheless, he and his small, dedicated team of scientists and technicians surpassed everyone's wildest expectations.

Wilhelm's Way reveals the life and times of this unsung hero who helped America win the race to build the atomic bomb and end World War II.
