Colchester A History【電子書籍】[ Andrew Phillips ]

Colchester boasts 2,000 years of history. Few towns in Britain can equal that. Yet this new book, by a local author, is the first full and concise history of Colchester to be published for over half a century, during which time our knowledge of the town's past has grown immeasurably. The Iron-Age capital of King Cunobelin (Shakespeare's Cymbeline), Colchester was the target of the Roman invasion in AD 43. Where the Emperor Claudius received its submission, the Romans built a legionary fortress, the framework of which still forms the centre of Colchester. As capital of Roman Britain, Colchester was overrun and burnt by the warrior queen Boudica (aka Boadicea), then rebuilt and ringed by its famous walls. After Rome fell and the Saxon incursions began, the Saxon King Edward the Elder made it the leading town in Essex. The Normans raised its profile higher, when an Abbey, a Priory and a great castle gave it the strategic defence of Eastern England. It was besieged only once, when King John was in conflict with his barons over Magna Carta. For 400 years Colchester's cloth industry placed it among the top fifteen towns in the kingdom. It saw Protestants burnt at the stake, withstood a Civil War siege, was ravaged by plague and stood in the front line against invasion, first by Napoleon, then by the Kaiser, then by Hitler. An important engineering town since Victorian times, it is today a regional shopping centre, a major garrison town and a popular tourist attraction. This authoritative, readable and well illustrated work, from a professional historian, will doubtless become the standard work on this ancient town for at least the next half-century.

The Story of Colchester Zoo【電子書籍】[ S. C. Kershaw ]

Colchester Zoo is today one of the finest zoos in Britain. Yet, unlike almost every other major zoo in the country, Colchester Zoo has never had its story told ? until now. The forgotten figures of Frank and Helena Farrar are here brought to life once again in these pages which show how they founded firstly Southport Zoo in the 1950s and then Colchester Zoo in the 1960s. Told here is the story of how Frank and Helena's domestic life with their lions and monkeys prompted them to embark on a series of adventures which took them all over the world. Also told is the story of how Colchester Zoo declined in the 1970s and how the Tropeano family turned it into the internationally respected breeding centre for endangered animals that it is today. This is a tale of struggle and heartbreak but also of transformation and redemption, and is a fitting tribute to one of our great animal institutions as it reaches its fiftieth anniversary.

Villages Around Colchester Through Time【電子書籍】[ Patrick Denney ]

Much has been written about Colchester and its rich and varied heritage, but rather less attention has been given to the surrounding rural communities. Like their larger neighbour, they too have experienced much change in the form of modernisation and increasing motor traffic, but to a large extent many of the smaller towns and villages of north east Essex have managed to retain much of their distinctive rural charm. From the picturesque villages surrounding the town to the coastal regions of Brightlingsea and Mersea Island, this book explores the changing scenes of life in these rural communities. Changing street scenes, buildings, transport and fashions are all graphically recorded and serve to highlight the ever forward march of time. This compilation will serve as a nostalgic reminder to those who can remember life as it used to be in the rural communities.

Chronicles of Colchester【電子書籍】[ Inge Schaefer ]

Since its charter in 1763, Colchester has been known for its remarkable early settlers, among them Ira Allen, founder of the state of Vermont, and for its picturesque setting on the shores of Lake
Champlain. Author Inge Schaefer, well known locally as the founder of the Colchester Chronicle, combines interviews, historical documents, and personal research in this series of articles on
Colchester?s past. Schaefer traces the stories of the town?s oldest families, like the Munsons and the Porters, from summer evenings dancing at Bayside Pavilion to the keeping of the Colchester
Reef Lighthouse. With a fresh perspective on twice-told tales of school days at Colchester Point, summers at the Brown Ledge Camp, and the heyday of Fort Ethan Allen, where the celebrated Buffalo Soldiers briefly resided, Chronicles of Colchester captures the
hearty spirit of this Lake Champlain community.

E. J. Rudsdale's Journals of Wartime Colchester【電子書籍】[ Catherine Pearson ]

E.J. Rudsdale's role as a museum curator and air-raid shelter superintendent at Colchester Castle during the Second World War gave him the perfect opportunity to record life on the Home Front in his journals. Seventy years later, the selected extracts gathered here provide a remarkable insight into wartime life. Rudsdale's writing is characterised throughout by his wry observations of wartime officialdom and his lack of conformity with the prevailing views of the time. He was a pacifist, which gives his journals an unusual perspective. However, even as a civilian he could not escape the conflict, living in a garrison town threatened by invasion and regular bombing raids. His journals, therefore, record anxious and tragic events, but throughout it all his sense of humour is never diminished.

This absorbing collection demonstrates Rudsdale's ability to bring a scene vividly to life and each account highlights the daily pressures that people endured as they valiantly tried to carry on with normal life in spite of the war.

The Church of England and the Home Front, 1914-1918 Civilians, Soldiers and Religion in Wartime Colchester【電子書籍】[ Robert Beaken ]

'In telling the story of the Church and its people in Colchester, a garrison town, Robert Beaken enlivens our understanding of the First World War - not only as a clash of mighty forces, but also at a personal and communal level.'The Very Rev. Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster

The Church of England is popularly believed to have had a bad First World War. This book challenges that tired orthodoxy. It examines the relationship between parish churches and the Army during the war, using the important garrison town of Colchester as a case study. Colchester in 1914-18 was a microcosm both of English society and of the Church of England, in all their diversity. The presence of the Army also meant that wartime experiences and trends which were noticeable elsewhere in England were sharply felt in Colchester.
For the generation of Britons who lived through the Great War, Christianity was an important part of their culture, world view and, in many instances, personal lives. To understand life on the home front during the war, it is vital to understand the part played by Christianity, and particularly by the parishes of the Church of England. With the help of newly discovered archival material, this book reassesses the relations between clergy, soldiers and civilians to show that, contrary to widely-held belief, the clergy and their parishioners responded to the crisis of 1914-18 with courage, common sense and self-sacrifice: their ministry kept much of the population going during the Great War.

ROBERT BEAKEN is parish priest of St Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield, and St Katharine, Little Bardfield, in Essex. He holds a PhD from King's College, London, and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Colchester in the Great War【電子書籍】[ Andrew Phillips ]

Few towns equalled Colchester in their role in the Great War. In this expert account, Colchester historian Andrew Phillips records four of the most dramatic years in the towns history. As Headquarters of Eastern Region, Colchesters garrison supplied many of the men who prevented the early defeat of France. The town then became a training area for at least 100,000 recruits. While training, guns on the Western Front could often be heard. At times Colchesters civilian population of 40,000 was equalled by 40,000 troops, who often billeted with local families or housed in large tent cities, which then became hut cities. With 20,000 troops to feed on average, long food queues became a daily experience until rationing was introduced, and soon thousands of requisitioned horses, trucks, artillery pieces and munitions were also assembled in the town.As the war took its deadly toll, Colchester became one vast hospital as the wounded arrived by train. An enlarged garrison hospital, an enlarged civilian hospital and six Red Cross Hospitals nursed at least 110,000 men. Colchester women made huge quantities of bandages, splints and gowns to alleviate the suffering of the war wounded. Colchester factories produced uniforms, guns, shells, mines, compressors and engines. Paxmans, the largest firm of the town, produced a staggering 20 million precision-machined parts. Over 10 per cent of Colchesters adult men died in the conflict, the highest in eastern England and twice the national average. Small wonder the town built one of the finest civic war memorials in England.

Colchester United: From Conference to Championship【電子書籍】[ Rob Hadgraft ]

Since 1992 Colchester United have risen from the obscurity of Non-League football to the upper echelons of the Championship, a feat that shocked its own supporters, never mind the football world at large. Season after season the pundits have made the Us certainties for relegation, but time and again the team have defied the odds. For a cash-strapped club operating from a tiny, tumbledown ground in front of meagre crowds, recent progress has been little short of astonishing. After decades among the also-rans, in 2007 Colchester officially joined one of Englands top 30 clubs. Only fifteen years earlier they had been playing alongside the likes of Slough, Runcorn and Merthyr. Traditionally, Colchester had to sell its best players to merely survive. The club could only attract cast-offs and free transfers to their footballing outpost in north-east Essex. Now all that is changing. In 2008 the club is scheduled to move into a swish new stadium, 35 years after plans were first aired for a move from Layer Road. The story of the Us three-division rise in the League pyramid is told here in full for the first time. It features a remarkable cast of characters and enthralling events both on an off the field of play.

Prostitution in Victorian Colchester Controlling the Uncontrollable【電子書籍】[ Jane Pearson ]

The decision to build a new army camp in the small market town of Colchester in 1856 was well received and helped to stimulate the local economy after a prolonged period of economic stagnation. Before long the Colchester garrison was one of the largest in the country and the town experienced an economic upturn as well as benefiting from the many social events organized by officers. But there was a downside: some of the soldiers' behavior was highly disruptive and, since very few private soldiers were allowed to marry, prostitution flourished. Having compiled a database of nearly 350 of Colchester's nineteenth-century prostitutes, the authors examine how they lived and operated and who their customers were.

Colchester at Work People and Industries Through the Years【電子書籍】[ Patrick Denney ]

The historic town of Colchester has a long history stretching back over 2,000 years to when it was the capital of Roman Britain, and before that a prominent centre during the Iron Age. Throughout the centuries the inhabitants of the town have engaged in all manner of occupational activities, bringing much prosperity to the area. During the Middle Ages the town grew rapidly as a centre for the manufacture of woollen cloth, and following the arrival of a large number of cloth workers from the Low Countries in the sixteenth century went on to achieve international fame as a centre for high-quality workmanship. In later years, the Industrial Revolution brought several new industries to the town, including Paxman’s engineering works, which came to be one of the leading suppliers of diesel engines both in this country and abroad. Other industries to have boomed at this time include the boot and shoe industry and also the rag trade where the town flourished as a centre for the production of men’s ready-to-wear clothing. The author has also included a chapter highlighting the working lives of a number of Colchester residents who were employed in the town during the early to middle decades of the twentieth century. Today Colchester is one of the fastest-growing communities in the country, benefitting from its university, new residential developments and its close proximity to Stansted Airport, Felixstowe and Harwich seaports and good connections to London. Colchester at Work explores the working life of this Essex town, and will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of this part of the country.

Said to be the oldest recorded town in Britain and the site of the first Roman city, Colchester has a story that is second to none. While the town has changed greatly over the past two millennia, the origins and history of Colchester are still very much part of its fabric, and the postcards contained in this book capture just a glimpse of it.

In 1986 there was an exhibition of local photography called 'Just Another Day' in which 20 local photographers had combined to capture life in Colchester over a 24-hour period on October 21 and 22nd that year. The exhibition attracted a great deal of attention, but in due course it closed and the photographs were put into storage. Twenty five years passed, and in 2011 another team of photographers founded the Colchester 24 Trust to photograph Colchester over another 24-hour period from Noon on Friday October 21st to Noon on Saturday October 22nd 2011 - exactly 25 years after the original event. By now, of course, there had been a revolution in photography thanks to the widespread availability of electronic cameras. By contrast, with strong backing from the Essex County Standard newspaper, 'Colchester 24' was thrown open to the Colchester public, inviting them to capture life in Colchester in 2011; to compile an archive for future generations to see. The outcome was overwhelming. Over 5,000 electronic images were contributed by about 200 photographers, which included schoolchildren, students, grandparents and amateur photographers of all kinds.

Colchester, Fortress of the War God an Archaeological Assessment【電子書籍】[ David Radford ]

This volume is a critical assessment of the current state of archaeological knowledge of the settlement originally called Camulodunon and now known as Colchester. The town has been the subject of antiquarian interest since the late 16th century and the first modern archaeological excavations occurred in 1845 close to Colchester Castle, the towns most prominent historic site.

The earliest significant human occupation recorded from Colchester dates to the late Neolithic, but it was only towards the end of the 1st century BC that an oppidum was established in the area. This was superseded initially by a Roman legionary fortress and then the colonia of Camulodunum on a hilltop bounded on the north and east by the river Colne. There is little evidence for continuing occupation here in the early post-Roman period, but in 917 the town was re-established as a burgh and gradually grew in importance. After the Norman Conquest, a castle was built on the foundations of the ruined Roman Temple of Claudius, and a priory and an abbey were established just to the south of the walled town.

Although the town, as elsewhere, was affected by the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the English Civil War it remained essentially medieval in character until the 18th century. During the 19th century this process of change was accelerated by the arrival of the railway, industrialisation and the establishment of the military garrison.

Since the 1960s Colchester has been subject to recurring phases of re-development, the most recent having ended only in 2007, which have had a significant impact on the historic environment. Fortunately the town is one of the best studied in the country.
