The Narrow Corridor States, Societies, and the Fate of Liberty【電子書籍】[ Daron Acemoglu ]

"Why is it so difficult to develop and sustain liberal democracy? The best recent work on this subject comes from a remarkable pair of scholars, Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson. In their latest book, The Narrow Corridor, they have answered this question with great insight." -Fareed Zakaria, The Washington Post

From the authors of the international bestseller Why Nations Fail, a crucial new big-picture framework that answers the question of how liberty flourishes in some states but falls to authoritarianism or anarchy in others--and explains how it can continue to thrive despite new threats.

In Why Nations Fail, Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson argued that countries rise and fall based not on culture, geography, or chance, but on the power of their institutions. In their new book, they build a new theory about liberty and how to achieve it, drawing a wealth of evidence from both current affairs and disparate threads of world history.

Liberty is hardly the "natural" order of things. In most places and at most times, the strong have dominated the weak and human freedom has been quashed by force or by customs and norms. Either states have been too weak to protect individuals from these threats, or states have been too strong for people to protect themselves from despotism. Liberty emerges only when a delicate and precarious balance is struck between state and society.

There is a Western myth that political liberty is a durable construct, arrived at by a process of "enlightenment." This static view is a fantasy, the authors argue. In reality, the corridor to liberty is narrow and stays open only via a fundamental and incessant struggle between state and society: The authors look to the American Civil Rights Movement, Europe’s early and recent history, the Zapotec civilization circa 500 BCE, and Lagos’s efforts to uproot corruption and institute government accountability to illustrate what it takes to get and stay in the corridor. But they also examine Chinese imperial history, colonialism in the Pacific, India’s caste system, Saudi Arabia’s suffocating cage of norms, and the “Paper Leviathan” of many Latin American and African nations to show how countries can drift away from it, and explain the feedback loops that make liberty harder to achieve.

Today we are in the midst of a time of wrenching destabilization. We need liberty more than ever, and yet the corridor to liberty is becoming narrower and more treacherous. The danger on the horizon is not "just" the loss of our political freedom, however grim that is in itself; it is also the disintegration of the prosperity and safety that critically depend on liberty. The opposite of the corridor of liberty is the road to ruin.

The Northeast Corridor The Trains, the People, the History, the Region【電子書籍】[ David Alff ]

All aboard for the first comprehensive history of the hard-working and wildly influential Northeast Corridor.

Traversed by thousands of trains and millions of riders, the Northeast Corridor might be America’s most famous railway, but its influence goes far beyond the right-of-way. David Alff welcomes readers aboard to see how nineteenth-century train tracks did more than connect Boston to Washington, DC. They transformed hundreds of miles of Atlantic shoreline into a political capital, a global financial hub, and home to fifty million people. The Northeast Corridor reveals how freight trains, commuter rail, and Amtrak influencedーand in turn were shaped byーcenturies of American industrial expansion, metropolitan growth, downtown decline, and revitalization.

Paying as much attention to Aberdeen, Trenton, New Rochelle, and Providence as to New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, Alff provides narrative thrills for history buffs, train enthusiasts, and adventurers alike. What’s more, he offers a glimpse into the future of the corridor. New infrastructural plansーsupported by President Joe Biden, famously Amtrak’s biggest fanーenvision ever-faster trains zipping along technologically advanced rails. Yet those tracks will literally sit atop a history that links the life of Frederick Douglass, who fled to freedom by boarding a train in Baltimore, to the Frederick Douglass Tunnel, which is expected to be the newest link in the corridor by 2032.

Trains have long made the places that make America, and they still do.

Death's Door: Second on the Left Down the Corridor【電子書籍】[ Nick Galtress ]

You will spend a lot longer dead than you did alive, but what is death? What is the state of ‘deadness’ like and how do you find out? Would a seance be better than an ouija board? Does the British Library have a book on the subject or with its skill in killing people, does the War Office have a pamphlet? Would a priest have the answer and if so what denomination? If the Forth Bridge is a long way away in Scotland, cold, wet, windy and hard to climb, why is it so popular with jumpers? I have written a letter to God, what address should I put on it? How do you connect with your ‘Jewish side’ if you don’t have one and will drinking malt whiskey with an unorthodox rabbi help? And why is the frog at the bottom of Eric’s tankard called Clarence? These and a host of other questions beset Miles Short, an aging man still rankling at the heartless parents who gave him his unfortunate first name and followed it up by calling his brother Weebit. The pursuit of an answer takes him down devious paths and to a somewhat undetermined outcome.

Seven years ago Bernadette Macomber did everything she could to cut her ties to her father Fabian, his opiate addiction, gun collection, and increasingly bizarre behaviour. She moved with her husband and four children, leaving no return address. Now, following his suicide, her father paradoxically makes contact again, and Bernadette finds herself not liberated but tethered to him ever more tightly by the bonds of familial guilt. Desperate for absolution, Bernie returns to her father’s home to hunt for evidence of his insanity and to try and understand why suicide became his answer. While she remains driven in her quest to understand the power of the parent/child bond, her father, Fabian, locked into his after-life purgatory, pushes for freedom via any available loophole through the punishing bureaucracy of personal evolution. While exploring his options, he encounters his jailor, the demon/angel Bune in the afterlife space of Corridor Nine. The colliding events trigger a complicated set of mysteries: there is the planet at the centre of Bune’s "master plan" diagram and the puzzle of its eventual connection to Bernadette’s painting; there is the addiction artifact that Bune pulls out of Fabian’s chest, and a host of other symbols and rites such as a blastoshere and embryo division all revealed while Fabien wanders the constant maze of Corridor Nine. On planet Earth Bernadette continues obsessively in her need to solve the mystery of her father’s death and his continued contact with one question guiding her: how can she achieve a father and daughter reunion that will bring them both peace and liberty?

You'll swim in dubious waters, walk with sharks, talk with ghosts, and wonder what it means to be a modern Hawaiian living in the high rocky mountains.

Lehua Parker is a master of tension, voice, and authenticity. Writing from her Hawaiian and Utah Pioneer roots, her award-winning fiction, essays, and memoir effortlessly blend elements of horror, magical realism, and romanceーall liberally sprinkled with her unique sense of humor. 'Race,’ Space and Multiculturalism in Northern England The (M62) Corridor of Uncertainty【電子書籍】[ Shamim Miah ]

This book challenges the narrative of Northern England as a failed space of multiculturalism, drawing on a historically-contextualised discussion of ethnic relations to argue that multiculturalism has been more successful and locally situated than these assumptions allow.

The authors examine the interplay between ‘race’, space and place to analyse how profound economic change, the evolving nature of the state, individual racism, and the local creation and enactment of multiculturalist policies have all contributed to shaping the trajectory of ethnic/faith identities and inter-community relations at a local level. In doing so, the book analyses both change and continuity in discussion of, and national/local state policy towards, ethnic relations, particularly around the supposed segregation/integration dichotomy, and the ways in which racialised ‘events’ are perceived and ‘identities’ are created and reflected in state policy operations.

Drawing on the authors’ long involvement in empirical research, policy and practice around ethnicity, ‘race’ and racism in the Northern England, they effectively support critical and situated analysis of controversial, racialised issues, and set these geographically specific findings in the context of wider international experiences of and tensions around growing ethnic diversity in the context of profound economic and social changes.

Strategy and Action Plan for the Greater Mekong Subregion East-West Economic Corridor【電子書籍】[ Asian Development Bank ]

The East?West Economic Corridor (EWEC) was launched in 1998 as a flagship initiative of the Greater Mekong Subregion. EWEC has since achieved many of its infrastructure targets and must now be transformed from a transport corridor into an economic corridor. This report reviews and updates the Pre-Investment Study for EWEC conducted in 2001. It consolidates the interests and concerns of stakeholders into a revised and updated strategy and action plan to provide a vision and framework, improve coordination, and assist in mobilizing resources for EWEC development. Preparation of this revised and updated strategy and action plan for EWEC involved a series of consultations with government officials of EWEC countries and representatives of the private sector, nongovernment organizations, and development partners. These consultations culminated in a regional workshop held on 24 April 2009 in Khon Kaen, Thailand. The revised and updated strategy and action plan for EWEC was endorsed at the 15th GMS Ministerial Conference held in Cha-am, Petchburi Province, Thailand on 17?19 June 2009.

Corridor Talk Canadian Feminist Scholars Share Stories of Research Partnerships【

In this collection, the authors illuminate the struggles and the successes encountered in the research partnership process. The authors come from a variety of disciplines, are at various stages of their academic careers, may or may not be part of the academy, adopt a variety of feminist lenses, have a range of research partners, and focus on a range of research topics. However, in keeping with feminist research that highlights “putting the self back into science,” all chapters share a focus on reflexivity, and in particular explore the impact of the research partnership process on the researcher. This “corridor talk,” often inaccessible and considered unimportant, is put at the centre of this feminist collection. Insights and lessons learned are shared, unsolved dilemmas are presented, and recommendations are made. In the first part of this book, the authors explore the challenges and benefits of engaging in research partnerships between university and community members. The contributions in the second part of the book include a broader definition of partnership, where partners include research participants. Not surprisingly, the emotional component of the research partnership process is often front and centre in all of these discussions, and the role of emotions in the research process is the focus of the first chapter in the collection. This is a book that upper year students, and novice and seasoned researchers will find useful.

The European Union’s Energy Security and Turkey’s Role in the Southern Gas Corridor Interdependence on the Natural Gas Pipeline between Turkey and EU【電子書籍】[ Faik Tanr?kulu ]

This study analyses the issue of energy security and natural gas in the Southern Gas Corridor, and its effects on the relationship between the European Union (EU) and Turkey. The increasing consumption of natural gas in the world as an energy source has rendered it a greater strategic importance in the world. Additionally, the conflict between Ukraine, Belarus and Russia over natural gas has threatened both the short and long-term security of the EU’s gas supply. Consequently this conflict has created the necessity to find alternative routes in order to meet Europe’s increasing gas demand. In this context, Turkey’s and the EU’s dependency on Russian natural gas has increased in the last decades, causing both Turkey and the EU to search for outside energy sources. Turkey plays a key role as part of the strategic Southern Gas Corridor initiative, which is a proposed gas pipeline in corporation with the Trans Anatolia Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP ) project, proposed to run from the Caspian region through Turkey to Europe. This study argues that the energy dependency among the countries not only affects the economic decisions, but also the political decisions.

Asia-Africa Growth Corridor Development and Cooperation in Indo-Pacific【

This book is a rich addition to the existing knowledge on models of development partnership among developing countries. Unlike the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which exclusively focuses on physical infrastructure development with a strong financing component by China, the Asia?Africa Growth Corridor (AAGC) envisages a holistic approach toward development partnership based on the spirit of triangular cooperation, demystifying the donor-recipient model of development cooperation. By integrating four distinct pillars of cooperation ? connectivity and physical infrastructure, capacity building and skill development, development cooperation projects, and people-to-people and business-to-business partnerships ? the book provides a succinct account of how a demand-driven people-centric model of engagement among Asian and African countries could help achieve inclusive and sustainable development without creating any fatal dependence on specific countries or institutions for external funding.

In sixteen chapters, the book covers various theoretical, analytical, and policy discussions with respect to the concept and modalities of the growth corridor approach under the free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific; potential opportunities and challenges in economic sectors and fields like agriculture, manufacturing, trade and investment, urbanization, industrialization, human resource development, and the blue economy; social sector priorities including health, education, skill development, disaster management, and women’s participation; and policy issues relating to trade facilitation, the identification of joint projects, modalities and instruments of project execution, and related aspects. The book offers a valuable resource for students and research scholars working in the fields of development economics, development cooperation, international political economy, and international economic relations. It also serves as a handbook for governments and policymakers on issues concerning the suitability of development projects, sources of and innovations in financing, implementation and execution challenges, private sector involvement, and so on.

Global Education Reform The Universe Is Governed by a Sequence of Realms; Hence, Global Education Reform Is a Dignified Path to Peace and Unity, a Promised Corridor for the Eradication of Lingering Human Prejudice, Discrimination, Injust【電子書籍】

Global Education Reform presents an opportunity to reorganize, transform, and recapture misplaced human potential. The book advocates a new culture of the education process through the establishment of Student Concerned Review Councils (SCRCs) as a vehicle for global education reform in college and university communities. The proposed SCRC must be viewed as an active search engine for a global conduit to encourage chancellors, vice chancellors, presidents, professors, and ministers of education to be fully integrated in the SCRC process. The book notes that effective design and implementation of Information Technology Resource Service Centers (ITRSCs) on college and university campuses will definitely help students to reconnect with their lost potential, elevate their self-confidence, improve their inner satisfaction, develop their personal life and professional career, and restore dignity to the education community. The implementation of Information Technology Resource Service Centers (ITRSC), Programming Resource Technology Center (PTRC), Open Access Technology Resource Center (OATRC), Professional Development Technology Center (PDTC), Professional Development Technology Center (PDTC), Academic Faculty Resource Technology Center (AFRTC), Academic Research Technology Center (ARTC), Learning Resource Technology Center (LRTC), and Certification Resource Technology Center (CRTC) will enhance the understanding, importance, and advantages of information technology in the education process.

The author sees the decay of the Nigerian educational system as a regrettable oversight and a deterrent to global education reform and the preparation, nurturing and education of future education leaders of the unified free world. The author asserts that Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Tafawa Balewa, General Aguiyi Ironsi, General Yakubu Gowon, Chief Obafemi Owolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Brigadier Udoakaha Esuene, and Governor Owelle Okorocha were patriotic, enduring, and outstanding education advocates for all citizens in Nigeria. A lifelong education is an instructive and enlightening route to wisdom, intellectual growth, and maturity; therefore, it is the authors assertion that combined and collaborative efforts are needed, as well as support from ministers of education and other politicians who are willing to allocate adequate financial resources that will enable privileged elites; chancellors, vice chancellors, presidents, professors to prepare future leaders of the education system in their formative years to establish an attitude of persistence, and self-confidence to cope with the demanding workforce and professional challenges of todays information technology society. The author submits that effective and efficient use of information technology as valuable data and voice transmission tools, e-mail, cell phones, Internet access as education instruction delivery apparatus, and communication system for global language barriers will definitely create a singular and mutually sovereign system for the successful development of global education reform.

Corridor Media Architectures in American Fiction【電子書籍】[ Kate Marshall ]

Corridor offers a series of conceptually provocative readings that illuminate a hidden and surprising relationship between architectural space and modern American fiction. By paying close attention to fictional descriptions of some of modernity’s least remarkable structures, such as plumbing, ductwork, and airshafts, Kate Marshall discovers a rich network of connections between corridors and novels, one that also sheds new light on the nature of modern media.

The corridor is the dominant organizational structure in modern architecture, yet its various functions are taken for granted, and it tends to disappear from view. But, as Marshall shows, even the most banal structures become strangely visible in the noisy communication systems of American fiction. By examining the link between modernist novels and corridors, Marshall demonstrates the ways architectural elements act as media. In a fresh look at the late naturalist fiction of the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s, she leads the reader through the fetus-clogged sewers of Manhattan Transfer to the corpse-choked furnaces of Native Son and reveals how these invisible spaces have a fascinating history in organizing the structure of modern persons.

Portraying media as not only objects but processes, Marshall develops a new idiom for Americanist literary criticism, one that explains how media studies can inform our understanding of modernist literature.

The Corridor of Uncertainty How Cricket Mended a Torn Nation【電子書籍】[ Nihar Suthar ]

In 1979, Afghanistan erupted into one of the most brutal civil wars ever. The fighting lasted almost a decade, throwing the country into a period of political instability, harsh leadership, and extreme danger. Hundreds of thousands of civilians died, and millions relocated to refugee camps. The rest of the world began to believe that violence would always define Afghans. However, deep in the refugee camps of Pakistan, displaced native Afghan children had a dream to unite their country once again with peace. The solution was disguised in the game of cricket. These children began to learn cricket, and persevered against the danger, criticism, and unrest to create the first-ever Afghan national cricket team. With unrivaled access to the team and players during the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Nihar Suthar tells the story of their inspiring journey to change Afghanistan in one of the most under-told, heart-warming sports stories of all time.

The "Capitol Corridor" is the name of the Amtrak passenger train route between California's capital, Sacramento, and San Jose, the state's first capital upon admission to the Union in 1850. The scenery between these two areas highlights vastly different land uses; examples include an industrialized shoreline covered with a forest of petroleum refineries, urban areas transitioning from industrial to residential use, and a wildlife refuge disturbed only by the passage of trains. The Capitol Corridor is now an integral part of the transportation scene in Northern California. Since 1991, its equipment and infrastructure have evolved to keep pace with technology as well as the area's dynamic economic and social environment.
