The Wisdom of Father Brown【電子書籍】[ G. K. Chesterton ]

Criminals bewareーthere is no eluding the extraordinary mind of Father Brown
Dr. Orion Hood is one of the eminent thinkers of his day, a psychologist whose expert opinion on human nature is sometimes sought by the police. Usually, he is called on to solve only the most spectacular crimesーa nobleman murdered, a diplomat poisonedーbut today a more ordinary problem presents itself. An amiable little priest named Father Brown asks Dr. Hood to help a young couple whose families do not want them to marry. Suspicions about the would-be groom aboundーdynamite is thought to be his weapon of choiceーbut Father Brown hopes that Dr. Hood will be able to put the accusations to rest. In the end, however, it is the humble clergyman who picks through the towering evidence of guilt to ensure that love prevails.

In this masterful collection of mysteries, including "The Paradise of Thieves," "The Mistake of the Machine," and "The Man in the Passage," Father Brown employs his amazing intuition, developed over years of listening to men confess their sins, to solve crimes large and small. One of the most beloved heroes in all of detective fiction, this unassuming parish priest is as dedicated to the cause of justice as he is to his faith.

This ebook features a new introduction by Otto Penzler and has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Eugenics and Other Evils【電子書籍】[ G. K. Chesterton ]

In the second decade of the twentieth century, an idea became all too fashionable among those who feel it is their right to set social trends. Wealthy families took it on as a pet cause, generously bankrolling its research. The New York Times praised it as a wonderful "new science." Scientists, such as the brilliant plant biologist, Luther Burbank, praised it unashamedly. Educators as prominent as Charles Elliot, President of Harvard University, promoted it as a solution to social ills.

That idea was eugenics and in the English-speaking world it had virtually no critics among the "chattering classes." When he wrote this book, Chesterton stood virtually alone against the intellectual world of his day. Yet to his eternal credit, he showed no sign of being intimidated by the prestige of his foes. On the contrary, he thunders against eugenics, ranking it one of the great evils of modern society.

The New Jerusalem Exploring Utopia: A Witty Critique of Modern Society and Call to Return to Traditional Values and Beliefs【電子書籍】[ G. K. Chesterton ]

In "The New Jerusalem," G. K. Chesterton presents a compelling exploration of faith, society, and the human spirit, articulated through his characteristic wit and incisive prose. This book, combining elements of social critique and Christian philosophy, delves into the nature of contemporary civilization while advocating for a return to spiritual and moral values. Chesterton elegantly juxtaposes the material with the transcendent, intertwining personal anecdotes and philosophical discourse that evoke the rich legacy of Christian thought and metaphysical inquiry within a modern context, making it an insightful addition to early 20th-century literature. G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936), an influential English writer and thinker, was renowned for his prolific output across various genres, including essays, fiction, and poetry. His restless intellect and fervent defense of Christianity were shaped by the turbulent societal landscapes of his time, particularly the rise of secularism and modernism. Drawing from his own journey into faith, Chesterton's insights in "The New Jerusalem" are not only reflective of his experiences but also indicative of his mission to illuminate the profound truths of Christianity amidst an increasingly fragmented society. For readers intrigued by the interplay of faith and culture, "The New Jerusalem" provides a thought-provoking narrative that encourages a rediscovery of spiritual ideals in an often chaotic world. Chesterton's eloquent prose and perspicacious observations make this text essential for anyone seeking deeper understanding of the relationship between the divine and the social order.

Manalive Challenging Societal Norms: A Whimsical Journey of Redemption and Love【電子書籍】[ G. K. Chesterton ]

In "Manalive," G. K. Chesterton presents a whimsical yet profound narrative that weaves together themes of identity, freedom, and the celebration of life. Set against the backdrop of a seemingly ordinary boarding house, the novel follows the character of Innocent Smith, whose eccentricities and unorthodox philosophies upend the mundane lives of its residents. Chesterton employs a vibrant, humorous prose style, imbued with sharp wit and philosophical undertones, that invites readers to question societal norms and the essence of happiness. The novel's context as a response to early 20th-century cynicism renders it a beacon of optimism in a world that often emphasizes the bleakness of existence. G. K. Chesterton, a luminary of the early 20th-century literary scene, was known for his robust engagement with philosophical and theological themes. His personal experiences as a journalist and his belief in the significance of wonder and joy heavily influenced his writing, culminating in the creation of "Manalive." Chesterton's deep-seated faith and his critique of materialism provide a rich framework that underpins the whimsical but incisive narrative found in this novel. "Manalive" is recommended for readers seeking not only entertainment but also a deeper philosophical exploration of freedom and self-discovery. Chesterton'??s charming blend of humor and earnestness promises to engage those interested in the more profound questions of existence. This book serves as an invigorating reminder to embrace the beauty of life, making it an essential read for both Chesterton enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Orthodoxy A Personal Philosophy【電子書籍】[ G. K. Chesterton ]

Of the numerous works that Chesterton wrote, the most scintillating synthesis of his philosophy and deeply religious faith was manifested in his masterpiece, Orthodoxy, written when he was only thirty-four and which tells, in his inimitable, soaring prose, of his earth-shaking discovery that orthodoxy is the only satisfactory answer to the perplexing riddle of the universe. Orthodoxy is perhaps the most outstanding example of the originality of his style and the brilliance of his thought. Chesterton states his purpose in Orthodoxy is to 'attempt an explanation, not of whether the Christian faith can be believed, but of how he personally has come to believe it'. This book has become a classic of Christian apologetics.

The Wisdom of Father Brown【電子書籍】[ G.K. Chesterton ]

In Chesterton’s second Father Brown book, ?The Wisdom of Father Brown,” we get a series of bizarre, sometimes dangerous mysteries that Father Brown must puzzle out. Some of the crimes are simple once Brown explains them, but others are devious, chilling things that are wrapped in Chesterton’s poetic prose. In the stories that follow, the priest investigates many other mysteries: a sinister voodoo cult, a nobleman with a deformed ear, a gang of Italian thieves, a lie-detector with one major problem (the operator), a girl who is blackmailed for a crime nobody knows she committed, a burning tower, a murder that may be suicide, and a man who is under a horrible death curse. Father Brown solves things by observation and thought, in some ways like Poirot, but in an unassuming and modest manner. The stories are each very different, but are very good reading.

Chesterton ]

THE only possible excuse for this book is that it is an answer to a challenge. Even a bad shot is dignified when he accepts a duel. When some time ago I published a series of hasty but sincere papers, under the name of "Heretics," several critics for whose intellect I have a warm respect (I may mention specially Mr. G. S. Street) said that it was all very well for me to tell everybody to affirm his cosmic theory, but that I had carefully avoided supporting my precepts with example. "I will begin to worry about my philosophy," said Mr. Street, "when Mr. Chesterton has given us his." It was perhaps an incautious suggestion to make to a person only too ready to write books upon the feeblest provocation. But after all, though Mr. Street has inspired and created this book, he need not read it. If he does read it, he will find that in its pages I have attempted in a vague and personal way, in a set of mental pictures rather than in a series of deductions, to state the philosophy in which I have come to believe. I will not call it my philosophy; for I did not make it. God and humanity made it; and it made me.

I have often had a fancy for writing a romance about an English yachtsman who slightly miscalculated his course and discovered England under the impression that it was a new island in the South Seas. I always find, however, that I am either too busy or too lazy to write this fine work, so I may as well give it away for the purposes of philosophical illustration. There will probably be a general impression that the man who landed (armed to the teeth and talking by signs) to plant the British flag on that barbaric temple which turned out to be the Pavilion at Brighton, felt rather a fool. I am not here concerned to deny that he looked a fool. But if you imagine that he felt a fool, or at any rate that the sense of folly was his sole or his dominant emotion, then you have not studied with sufficient delicacy the rich romantic nature of the hero of this tale. His mistake was really a most enviable mistake; and he knew it, if he was the man I take him for. What could be more delightful than to have in the same few minutes all the fascinating terrors of going abroad combined with all the humane security of coming home again? What could be better than to have all the fun of discovering South Africa without the disgusting necessity of landing there? What could be more glorious than to brace one's self up to discover New South Wales and then realize, with a gush of happy tears, that it was really old South Wales. This at least seems to me the main problem for philosophers, and is in a manner the main problem of this book. How can we contrive to be at once astonished at the world and yet at home in it? How can this queer cosmic town, with its many-legged citizens, with its monstrous and ancient lamps, how can this world give us at once the fascination of a strange town and the comfort and honour of being our own town?

To show that a faith or a philosophy is true from every standpoint would be too big an undertaking even for a much bigger book than this; it is necessary to follow one path of argument; and this is the path that I here propose to follow. I wish to set forth my faith as particularly answering this double spiritual need, the need for that mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar which Christendom has rightly named romance. For the very word "romance" has in it the mystery and ancient meaning of Rome. Any one setting out to dispute anything ought always to begin by saying what he does not dispute. Beyond stating what he proposes to prove he should always state what he does not propose to prove. The thing I do not propose to prove, the thing I propose to take as common ground between myself and any average reader, is this desirability of an active and imaginative life, picturesque and full of a poetical curiosity, a life such as western man at any rate always seems to have desired. If a man says that extinction is better than existence or blank existence better than variety and adventure, then he is not one of the ordinary people to whom I am talking. If a man prefers nothing I can give him nothing. But nearly all people I have ever met in this western society in which I live would agree to the general proposition that we need this life of practical romance; the combination of something that is strange with something that is secure. We need so to view the world as to combine an idea of wonder and an idea of welcome. We need to be happy in this wonderland without once being merely comfortable. It is THIS achievement of my creed that I shall chiefly pursue in these pages.

"What's Wrong With the World" is G. K. Chesterton's 1910 collection of essays in which he puts forth his economic philosophy of Distributism. Along with Hillaire Belloc, Chesterton formulated the idea of Distributism as an economic order that was more in line with the principles articulated by the Roman Catholic Church. Put simply Distributism argues that the means of production should be spread as widely as possible amongst the populace instead of being centrally controlled by the state or a handful of wealthy individuals or large businesses. The economic discussion with this collection of essays engenders captivating questions to both Capitalistic and Socialistic philosophy while proposing interesting solutions to the socio-economic problems that have plagued man since the dawn of civilization.

"St. Francis was in advance of his age. He anticipated all that is most liberal and sympathetic in the modern mood; the love of nature; the love of animals; the sense of social compassion; the sense of the spiritual dangers of prosperity and even of property. All those things that nobody understood before Wordsworth were familiar to St. Francis. All those things that were first discovered by Tolstoy had been taken for granted by St. Francis. He could be presented, not only as a human but a humanitarian hero; indeed as the first hero of humanism. He has been described as a sort of morning star of the Renaissance." - G.K Chesterton

In this work, G.K Chesterton brings his unique perspective to the life of St. Francis, blending historical facts with his own reflections. Chesterton ]

One of the twentieth century's most admired and influential authors, G.K. Chesterton (1874?1936) created an enduring body of work that encompasses journalism, poetry, plays, history, biography, apologetics, and detective fiction.
Through this book Chesterton leads us on a literary journey toward truth. A unique book, Orthodoxy addresses our faith struggles and how we communicate our faith to others. In this timeless classic, G.K. Chesterton, one of the literary giants of the twentieth century, presents a logical and personal reasoning for Christianity in model apologetic form. ‘Orthodoxy’ bridges the centuries and appeals to today's readers who face the same challenges of materialism, self-centeredness, and progress.

About the Author:
Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He began his education at St Paul's School, and later went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. He was a self-described pagan at age 12 and totally agnostic by age 16. Yet, his spiritual journey ultimately led to a personal philosophy of orthodox, biblical Christianity. He wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are The Man Who Was Thursday, a metaphysical thriller, and The Everlasting Man, a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics. Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown." Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood With Appreciations and Criticisms By G. K. Chesterton【電子書籍】[ Charles Dickens ]

Charles Dickens's last and unfinished novel, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” was originally published in 1870. When Dickens died in 1870, just six of the intended twelve chapters had been completed, with no remaining plan or indication to how the story should continue. Despite this, numerous other writers have tried to complete the novel. The story revolves around the titular character's uncle, John Jasper, an opium addict and choirmaster who falls in love with his student and nephew's fianc?e, Rosa Bud. Rosa, however, has also attracted the attention of one Neville Landless, whom Edwin immediately dislikes. Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812?1870) was an English writer and social critic famous for having created some of the world's most well-known fictional characters. His works became unprecedentedly popular during his life, and today he is commonly regarded as the greatest Victorian-era novelist. Although perhaps better known for such works as “Oliver Twist” or “A Christmas Carol”, Dickens first gained success with the 1836 serial publication of “The Pickwick Papers”, which turned him almost overnight into an international literary celebrity thanks to his humour, satire, and astute observations concerning society and character. This classic work is being republished now in a new edition complete with an introductory chapter from “Appreciations and Criticisms of the Works of Charles Dickens” by G. K. Chesterton.

The Napoleon of Notting Hill (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ G. K. Chesterton ]

The Napoleon of Notting Hill is a novel written by G. K. Chesterton in 1904, set in a nearly unchanged London in 1984.
Although the novel is set in the future, it is, in effect, set in an alternative reality of Chesterton's own period, with no advances in technology or changes in the class system or attitudes. It postulates an impersonal government, not described in any detail, but apparently content to operate through a figurehead king, randomly chosen.
