Excerpt: "I have strung these things together on a slight enough thread; but as the things themselves are slight, it is possible that the thread (and the metaphor) may manage to hang together. These notes range over very variegated topics and in many cases were made at very different times. They concern all sorts of things from lady barristers to cave-men, and from psycho-analysis to free verse. Yet they have this amount of unity in their wandering, that they all imply that it is only a more traditional spirit that is truly able to wander. The wild theorists of our time are quite unable to wander. When they talk of making new roads, they are only making new ruts. Each of them is necessarily imprisoned in his own curious cosmos; in other words, he is limited by the very largeness of his own generalization. The explanations of the Marxian must not go outside economics; and the student of Freud is forbidden to forget sex. To see only the fanciful side of these serious sects may seem a very frivolous pleasure; and I will not dispute that these are very frivolous criticisms. I only submit that this frivolity is the last lingering form of freedom."

Magic A Fantastic Comedy【電子書籍】[ Gilbert Keith Chesterton ]

In "Magic," Gilbert Keith Chesterton intertwines the realms of the mystical and the mundane, offering readers a profound exploration of enchantment within everyday life. Through a series of essays, Chesterton employs a captivating literary style characterized by his characteristic wit, paradox, and an engaging, conversational tone. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century England, the book reflects the philosophical tensions of the time, as it challenges the reduction of the wondrous to mere rationality, celebrating instead the magic inherent in the very fabric of existence. Chesterton, a prolific writer, journalist, and theologian, delved into the complexities of faith, reason, and human experience throughout his career. His deep Christian beliefs, combined with his childhood exposure to wonder-filled tales and an appreciation for the fantastical, inspired him to confront the skepticism of his age. "Magic" distills his profound understanding of the relationship between the ordinary and the extraordinary, shedding light on the spiritual dimensions that often elude modern consciousness. This book is a must-read for those seeking to reignite their sense of wonder and curiosity about the world. Chesterton's brilliance lies in his ability to reveal the magic within our daily lives, making "Magic" not just an intellectual pursuit but an invitation to experience the sacred in the commonplace. Placed People Rootedness in G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, and Wendell Berry【電子書籍】[ David Harden ]

Modern humans are given lots of labels. Some see humans as consumers: consumers of goods, services, and entertainment for the Economy. Some see humans as souls to be saved. Some say humans are destructive animals that must not think too highly of themselves at the peril of the planet. All of these often competing and contradictory labels beg the question: "What are people for?" This book locates the starting point for answering this question in a placed perspective, and examines what G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, and Wendell Berry have to show us in this regard. These authors' rooted perspectives challenge us to see our communities and ourselves differently.

THIS book is meant to be a companion to “Heretics,” and to put the positive side in addition to the negative. Many critics complained of the book called “Heretics” because it merely criticised current philosophies without offering any alternative philosophy. This book is an attempt to answer the challenge. It is unavoidably affirmative and therefore unavoidably autobiographical. The writer has been driven back upon somewhat the same difficulty as that which beset Newman in writing his Apologia; he has been forced to be egotistical only in order to be sincere. While everything else may be different the motive in both cases is the same. It is the purpose of the writer to attempt an explanation, not of whether the Christian Faith can be believed, but of how he personally has come to believe it. The book is therefore arranged upon the positive principle of a riddle and its answer. It deals first with all the writer’s own solitary and sincere speculations and then with all the startling style in which they were all suddenly satisfied by the Christian Theology. The writer regards it as amounting to a convincing creed. But if it is not that it is at least a repeated and surprising coincidence.

Gilbert K. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit With Appreciations and Criticisms By G. K. Chesterton【電子書籍】[ Charles Dickens ]

Considered to be the last picaresque novel he wrote, Charles Dickens's “The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit” was originally published as a serial between 1842 and 1844. One of his lesser-known literary works, it follows the story of two brothers, Martin and Jonas Chuzzlewit, who are driven to a life of crime and degeneracy thanks to a seemingly inherited selfishness and stubbornness. “The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit” is a classic of English literature that features some of the most memorable Dickensian villains. Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812?1870) was an English writer and social critic famous for having created some of the world's most well-known fictional characters. His works became unprecedentedly popular during his life, and today he is commonly regarded as the greatest Victorian-era novelist. Although perhaps better known for such works as “Great Expectations” or “A Christmas Carol”, Dickens first gained success with the 1836 serial publication of “The Pickwick Papers”, which turned him almost overnight into an international literary celebrity thanks to his humour, satire, and astute observations concerning society and character. This classic work is being republished now in a new edition complete with an introductory chapter from “Appreciations and Criticisms of the Works of Charles Dickens” by G. K. Chesterton.

The Man Who Knew Too Much【電子書籍】[ Gilbert K. Chesterton ]

Harold March, the rising reviewer and social critic, was walking vigorously across a great tableland of moors and commons, the horizon of which was fringed with the far-off woods of the famous estate of Torwood Park. He was a good-looking young man in tweeds, with very pale curly hair and pale clear eyes. Walking in wind and sun in the very landscape of liberty, he was still young enough to remember his politics and not merely try to forget them. For his errand at Torwood Park was a political one; it was the place of appointment named by no less a person than the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Howard Horne, then introducing his so-called Socialist budget, and prepared to expound it in an interview with so promising a penman. Harold March was the sort of man who knows everything about politics, and nothing about politicians. He also knew a great deal about art, letters, philosophy, and general culture; about almost everything, indeed, except the world he was living in.

“Modern intelligence won’t accept anything on authority. But it will accept anything without authority. That’s exactly what has happened here.” ー Horne Fisher in The Man Who Knew Too Much

From the creator of the Father Brown mysteries come nine short stories, eight of which trace the activities of Horne Fisher, “the man who knew too much,” and his trusted friend Harold March, a political journalist. Horne is a socialite who uses his keen mind and powerful gifts of deduction to investigate crimes committed on the sprawling country estates of the aristocracy. The other story, “The Trees of Pride,” revolves around the fictional character Squire Vane.
Much loved for their wit and sense of wonder, these stories offer a fascinating portrait of upper-crust society in pre-World War I England.
As an advocate of Distributism, an early 20th-century school of social thought developed by the author and his colleagues, Chesterton addresses the topics of concentration of wealth, poverty, work, agriculture, machinery, and capital in this famous work. He favored distribution of wealth while being antisocialist; he advocated ownership of private property while being anticapitalist. He argues that the economic order is bound by moral law and that man should be served by the economy rather than serving it.

Orthodoxy, as G. K. Chesterton employs the term here, means "right opinion." In this, the masterpiece of his brilliant literary career, he applies the concept of correct reasoning to his acceptance of Christianity. Written in a down-to-earth and familiar style, he presents formal and scholarly arguments in the explanation and defense of the tenets underlying his faith.
Paradox and contradiction, Chesterton maintains, do not constitute barriers to belief; imagination and intuition are as relevant to the processes of thought and understanding as logic and rationality. "Whenever we feel there is something odd in Christian theology," he observes, "we shall generally find that there is something odd in the truth." He defines his insights with thought-provoking analogies, personal anecdotes, and engaging humor, making this century-old book a work of enduring charm and persuasion.

The Wisdom of Father Brown【電子書籍】[ G. K. Chesterton ]

THE consulting-rooms of Dr Orion Hood, the eminent criminologist and specialist in certain moral disorders, lay along the sea-front at Scarborough, in a series of very large and well-lighted french windows, which showed the North Sea like one endless outer wall of blue-green marble. In such a place the sea had something of the monotony of a blue-green dado: for the chambers themselves were ruled throughout by a terrible tidiness not unlike the terrible tidiness of the sea. It must not be supposed that Dr Hood’s apartments excluded luxury, or even poetry. These things were there, in their place; but one felt that they were never allowed out of their place. Luxury was there: there stood upon a special table eight or ten boxes of the best cigars; but they were built upon a plan so that the strongest were always nearest the wall and the mildest nearest the window. A tantalus containing three kinds of spirit, all of a liqueur excellence, stood always on this table of luxury; but the fanciful have asserted that the whisky, brandy, and rum seemed always to stand at the same level. Poetry was there: the left-hand corner of the room was lined with as complete a set of English classics as the right hand could show of English and foreign physiologists. But if one took a volume of Chaucer or Shelley from that rank, its absence irritated the mind like a gap in a man’s front teeth. One could not say the books were never read; probably they were, but there was a sense of their being chained to their places, like the Bibles in the old churches. Dr Hood treated his private book-shelf as if it were a public library. And if this strict scientific intangibility steeped even the shelves laden with lyrics and ballads and the tables laden with drink and tobacco, it goes without saying that yet more of such heathen holiness protected the other shelves that held the specialist’s library, and the other tables that sustained the frail and even fairylike instruments of chemistry or mechanics.
Dr Hood paced the length of his string of apartments, boundedーas the boys’ geographies sayーon the east by the North Sea and on the west by the serried ranks of his sociological and criminologist library. He was clad in an artist’s velvet, but with none of an artist’s negligence; his hair was heavily shot with grey, but growing thick and healthy; his face was lean, but sanguine and expectant. Everything about him and his room indicated something at once rigid and restless, like that great northern sea by which (on pure principles of hygiene) he had built his home.

The end of the longest room at Seawood Abbey was full of light; for the walls were almost made of windows and it projected upon a terraced part of the garden above the park on an almost cloudless morning. Murrel, called Monkey for some reason that everybody had forgotten, and Olive Ashley were taking advantage of the light to occupy themselves with painting; though she was painting on a very small scale and he on a very large one. She was laying out peculiar pigments very carefully, in imitation of the flat jewellery of medieval illumination, for which she had a great enthusiasm, as part of a rather vague notion of a historic past. He, on, he other hand, was highly modern, and was occupied with several pails full of very crude colours and with brushes which reached the stature of brooms. With these he was laying about him on large sheets of lath and canvas, which were to act as scenery in some private theatricals then in preparation. They could not paint, either of them; nor did they imagine that they could.

In Orthodoxy, Gilbert K. Chesterton explains how and why he came to believe in Christianity, and more specifically, the Catholic Church's brand of orthodoxy. In the book, Chesterton takes the spiritually curious reader on an intellectual quest. While looking for the meaning of life, he finds truth that uniquely fulfills human needs. This is the truth revealed in Christianity. Chesterton likens this discovery to a man setting off from the south coast of England, journeying for many days, only to arrive at Brighton, the point he originally left from. Such a man, he proposes, would see the wondrous place he grew up in with newly appreciative eyes. This is a common theme in Chesterton's works, and one which he gave fictional embodiment to in Manalive. A truly lively and enlightening book!
