Sam Johnson: the Experience and Observations of a Railroad Telegraph Operator【電子書籍】[ John Albert Clippinger ]

"One of the most entertaining books in the whole library of railroad literature." -Railroader, 1883
"Great popularity, a treasure of entertainment." -Electrical World, 1883

While early telegraph lines often ran alongside railroad tracks in the United States, it was not until 1851 that the telegraph was first used for train routing by Charles Minot, Superintendent of the Erie Railroad. As the practice gained wider acceptance in the 1860s and 1870s, telegraphers would be stationed in individual depots along the railroad line in order to receive train orders from a centrally located dispatcher and report back on train movements.

John Albert Clippinger was a California telegraph operator who in 1878 published "Sam Johnson: the Experience and Observations of a Railroad Telegraph Operator," a book of true stories as told to the author by his friend Sam Johnson.

Clippinger's book was described as the only work published giving an insight into the social life of men whose duty it is to control for the benefit of society the operations of the railroad telegraph.

Sam's experiences were largely among the inhabitants of distant localities, affording in their recital much humor and quaintness. The variety and mirthfulness of this book gave it great popularity particularly among men telegraph operators who found it a treasure of entertainment in their leisure moments.

Tramps were a source of great annoyance to train men. They became "so dextrous at stealing rides and getting on and off trains, that it is almost impossible to thwart them, especially on a long train." One tramp caused considerable trouble:
"Freight train No. 8 started out with one of these irrepressible 'dead head' travelers 'stowed away' on a brake beam. He was routed out at Poverty Flat, but got aboard again. He was put off at every station at which the train stopped, and often raced up and down its whole length, but he always succeeded in eluding the train men and in getting on. He boldly asserted that he was going through to San Francisco on that train, and they could not prevent him. At Midway, halfway to San Francisco, the conductor told the tramp that if he was determined to go, to get into the caboose. He did, and was immediately seized by the conductor, who, with the assistance of the brakeman, securely bound him to a telegraph pole near the depot..."

Another time Sam sought to teach a lesson to a night watchman who "proved to be as much of a night sleeper":

"The watchman would go into the sitting-room, and, remarking that he was going to 'stretch himself,' would deposit his full length on one of the seats. He claimed that he never sleptーO, no, not he! Sam thought he did; at least he had never heard a man snore so persistently, and with so much regularity, when awake. One night he lay down with a fine fur cap on his head. Sam said to himself; 'If he goes to sleep with that fur cap on, I'll take it off, and he'll never see it again.' And he did.

"The watchman sprang up at the sound of a locomotive whistle, felt on his head for his cap, then looked all about the room, but could not find it. He dared not accuse Sam of taking it, for that would be at once confessing sleep; nor does he know to this day what became of his cap."

The book concludes by noting that "I am not enumerating the multiplied duties and responsibilities of railroad operators for the purpose of complaining of their situation, but simply in hopes that they may be better understood and appreciated. They are the liveliest of the lively, the happiest of the happy.

The Disturbing Nature of Christianity【電子書籍】[ Lance E. Clippinger ]

The Disturbing Nature of Christianity challenges the reader to look at the central truths of Christianity with unflinching honesty. Excerpts from The Disturbing Nature of Christianity: The message of the Bible is clear. The great majority of humanity (including that humanity we personally know) will be offended and reject the salvation offered by God the Father through His Son. Do you find that truth disturbing? If so you are experiencing a natural consequence of taking Jesus teaching seriously. Jesus told us that if you are a Christian you are in a tiny minority. And as we have seen in our study the true Christian is in a minority even in conservative evangelical churches. In his classic book The Cost of Discipleship, the world-renowned theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer explains Christs teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. The following is teaching I never heard from any pulpit or any Bible teacher in my 35 years as a Christian. (Concerning Matthew 7:13-14) A little band of men, the followers of Christ, are separated from the rest of the world. The disciples are few in number, and will always be few. The saying of Jesus forestalls all exaggerated hopes of success. Never let a disciple of Jesus pin his hopes on large numbers. The only comfort the disciples have in face of this prospect is the promise of life and eternal fellowship with Jesus. (p. 211) (Concerning Matthew 10) The Messengers of Jesus will be hated to the end of time. They will be blamed for all the divisions, which rend cities and homes. Jesus and his disciples will be condemned on all sides for undermining family life, and for leading the nation astray, they will be called crazy fanatics and disturbers of the peace (p. 239)

The Offer Examining the Role of the Nation of Israel in the First and Second Comings of Jesus Christ【電子書籍】[ Lance E. Clippinger ]

Almost 2,000 years ago Jesus offered to Israel not only spiritual salvation, but political and physical salvation as well. This offer was made with one crucial requirement or condition, which Israel failed to meet. Just before Jesus' second coming Israel will fulfill this condition and The Offer will be received.

Why did Jesus conceal and try to "hush up" some of His miracles?

Why did Jesus command the disciples to tell no one that He was the Christ?

Why was Jerusalem and its temple destroyed in 70 A.D. and will the temple be rebuilt?

Will there be a forerunner (like John the Baptist) who prepares the way for Jesus' second coming?

In the end times, how will the nation of Israel come to believe in Jesus?

What will it be like for Christians to live and rule with Jesus on the earth?

These questions and many more are answered in The Offer. Lance Clippinger demonstrates that if we understand what Jesus offered Israel, many of our questions about the Bible, Jesus, the time we live in, and the future of our world will be answered.

A Crowd of One The Future of Individual Identity【電子書籍】[ John Clippinger ]

Great leaps forward in scientific understanding have, throughout history, engendered similar leaps forward in how we understand ourselves. Now, the new hybrid disciplines of evolutionary biology and social physics are making the next leap possible -- and fundamentally altering our notions of individual identity. If identity is a fact not derived from within the individual, but conferred on an individual by a group, or network, a host of assumptions about how governments work, how conflicts arise and are resolved, and how societies can be coaxed toward good are overturned.

John Clippinger brilliantly illuminates how the Enlightenment itself -- the high point of individual assertiveness -- was a product not just of a few moments of individual inspiration and creativity, but rather of a societal shift that allowed innovation and creativity to flourish. Michelangelo owes quite as much to the circumstances of the Renaissance as the Renaissance does to the work of Michelangelo.

Now, the digitalization of society, which affects all of us already, allows new insight into these questions: What does it require for societies, organizations and individuals, to thrive? Who decides who you are? How can happiness be shared and spread? Who can you trust?
