Fundamental Ideas in Cosmology Scientific, philosophical and sociological critical perspectives【電子書籍】[ Mart?n L?pez-Corredoira ]

This book examines the world of cosmological research, providing an in-depth critical review of the research associated with challenges to the standard Big Bang scenario. It includes studies that are apparently at odds with the current standard Lambda-CDM model, providing examples of alternative theories, tests and problems with the standard model, and a discussion on the philosophy and sociology of cosmology. Theoretical limitations and practical implications of the Standard Model are discussed, assessing the sociological factors contributing to the neglect of alternative cosmological ideas, which include the allocation of funds, research positions, prestige, and telescope time, as well as discussing the religious, economic and political ideologies that influence the contents of cosmological ideas. The book is an excellent resource for working cosmologists, as well as undergraduate and graduate students of Astronomy and Philosophy of Science.

Egyptian Sacred Sciences and Cosmology【電子書籍】[ NORAH ROMNEY ]

Kemetic writings found in Alexandria's libraries were attributed collectively to Hermes, a Greek conception of the Egyptian deity Djehuti, patron of science, learning, and language. She was believed to have incarnated herself as a sage several times, and in the beginnings of Egyptian civilization, in the form of Hermes Trismegistus, also known as the "thrice greatest" because he had perfected the three sacred disciplines of medicine, architecture, and astronomy.

Egypt regarded Djehuti as the original teacher of sacred knowledge. His task was to write the secret books of the temples and possess the magical words of power used in temple rituals. He was known as Thoth-Hermes by the Greeks living in Egypt. Imhotep was revered as a patron saint of arcane teachings in the Old Kingdom. According to Egyptian Legend, his architectural canons constructed the Saqqara and Giza monuments. The Greeks and Romans believed these complexes were temples of initiation into the highest mysteries of religion. The Legend of Thoth/Hermes Trismegistus was thus born, with all the accompanying Hermetic attributes and historical lore derived from Graeco-Roman culture.

The Cosmic Century A History of Astrophysics and Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Malcolm S. Longair ]

The twentieth century witnessed the development of astrophysics and cosmology from subjects which scarcely existed to two of the most exciting and demanding areas of contemporary scientific inquiry. In this book Malcolm Longair reviews the historical development of the key areas of modern astrophysics, linking the strands together to show how they have led to the extraordinarily rich panorama of modern astrophysics and cosmology. While many of the great discoveries were derived from pioneering observations, the emphasis is upon the development of theoretical concepts and how they came to be accepted. These advances have led astrophysicists and cosmologists to ask some of the deepest questions about the nature of our Universe and have pushed astronomical observations to the very limit. This is a fantastic story, and one which would have defied the imaginations of even the greatest storytellers.

A Guide to the Cosmology of William Blake【電子書籍】[ Kathryn Freeman ]

It is not surprising that visitors to Blake’s cosmology ? the most elaborate in the history of British text and design ? often demand a map in the form of a reference book. The entries in this volume benefit from the wide range of historical information made available in recent decades regarding the relationship between Blake’s text and design and his biographical, political, social, and religious contexts. Of particular importance, the entries take account of the re-interpretations of Blake with respect to race, gender, and empire in scholarship influenced by the groundbreaking theories that have arisen since the first half of the twentieth century. The intricate fluidity of Blake’s anti-Newtonian universe eludes the fixity of definitions and schema. Central to this guide to Blake's work and ideas is Kathryn S. Freeman's acknowledgment of the paradox of providing orientation in Blake’s universe without disrupting its inherent disorientation of the traditions whereby readers still come to it. In this innovative work, Freeman aligns herself with Blake’s demand that we play an active role in challenging our own readerly habits of passivity as we experience his created and corporeal worlds.

Starry Reckoning: Reference and Analysis in Mathematics and Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Emily Rolfe Grosholz ]

This book deals with a topic that has been largely neglected by philosophers of science to date: the ability to refer and analyze in tandem. On the basis of a set of philosophical case studies involving both problems in number theory and issues concerning time and cosmology from the era of Galileo, Newton and Leibniz up through the present day, the author argues that scientific knowledge is a combination of accurate reference and analytical interpretation. In order to think well, we must be able to refer successfully, so that we can show publicly and clearly what we are talking about. And we must be able to analyze well, that is, to discover productive and explanatory conditions of intelligibility for the things we are thinking about. The book’s central claim is that the kinds of representations that make successful reference possible and those that make successful analysis possible are not the same, so that significant scientific and mathematical work typically proceeds by means of a heterogeneous discourse that juxtaposes and often superimposes a variety of kinds of representation, including formal and natural languages as well as more iconic modes. It demonstrates the virtues and necessity of heterogeneity in historically central reasoning, thus filling an important gap in the literature and fostering a new, timely discussion on the epistemology of science and mathematics.

Cosmology, Atomic Theory, Evolution Classic Readings in the Literature of Science【

"Sir William Cecil Dampier's Readings in the Literature of Science has long been a classic. Unlike many other collections, it has the virtue of dealing thoroughly with three major subjects which are at the very heart of science: cosmogony, atomic theory and evolution. For each, the readings have been selected so as to give a continuous story, enabling the reader to share in the great excitement of the process of scientific discovery and the growth of knowledge from the earliest times to the present. Here, in the original writings of the men who have made science, are displayed the noble qualities of the disciplined imagination which are the chief defining characteristics of the scientific enterprise." ー I. Bernard Cohen, Professor of the History of Science, Harvard University
From the biblical book of Genesis to Henri Bergson's Creative Evolution, these extracts from world literature illustrate the development of scientific thought across millennia. Starting with speculations by the ancient Greeks on the structure of the universe, selections on cosmogony include works by Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Laplace, Foucault, and Einstein. Theories and reports on experimental results concerning the nature of matter range from Paracelsus' writings on alchemy to Faraday's work with electrochemistry and Sir Ernest Rutherford's studies of radioactivity and the structure of the atom. The final section on evolutionary theory begins with Aristotle and Pliny and features landmark works by the giants in the field, among them, Linnaeus, Lamarck, Lyell, Malthus, Darwin, and Mendel. 36 figures. 7 tables.

De Novo Quantum Cosmology with Artificial Intelligence Applications of Formal Autoencoders【電子書籍】[ Ariel Fern?ndez ]

Experiments attempting to recreate the Big Bang and measurements in deep space point to the tantalizing possibility that our universe may be the relic of something simple, powerful, and highly symmetric. The evidence suggests an entity where matter and energy cannot be told apart and the four fundamental forces are unified into one. Empowered by artificial intelligence, De Novo Quantum Cosmology with Artificial Intelligence seeks to unravel the mystery as it searches for an encompassing physical picture where it all falls into place at the aftermath of creation from a quantum void. From the outset, AI reckons that the problem cannot be tackled without proper contextualization, that is, without dealing with other intimately related problems in particle cosmology including: the nature of dark matter and dark energy, the hierarchy problem of particle masses, the incommensurably weak coupling strength of gravity, the universe topology, the cosmological constant problem, and the vacuum catastrophe. Accordingly, the book addresses the matter in its full conceptual richness. This monograph addresses a broad readership that includes a nonhuman audience involving AI systems. A background in college-level physics and computer science would be essential. Although informal in the approach, the material is presented with scientific rigor, so that readers gain hands-on experience on the subject. The book is geared at graduate students as well as professional physicists, mathematicians, cosmologists, and big data scientists that seek to venture into some of the core problems in particle cosmology empowered by AI. Notably, the book is also geared at nonhuman audiences, since AI systems may incorporate its fundamental operational tenets and take the matter to unfathomable heights.

Key Features:

Introduces an artificial intelligence system to tackle core problems in particle cosmology

Describes a grand unification scheme to explain the common origin of the fundamental forces

Identifies the origin of matter as a phase transition from the quantum vacuum.

PHYSICS AND SUFI COSMOLOGY Creation of Universe and Life In the Light of Science and Philosophical Spirituality (The Cosmos and the Self)【電子書籍】[ Sardar Irshad Shaheen ]

The perennial enigma the human mind has been encountering is the meaning of life and its place in the universe. On this subject, science and spirituality remained in discord with each other particularly for the last couple of centuries. The Theory of Relativity followed by quantum mechanics changed the worldview of traditional mindset altogether. The postulates of quantum physics paved the way for growing interest in philosophical spirituality. Theoretical physicist Fritjof Capra's book The Tao of Physics explored parallels between Eastern mysticism and modern science. Toshihiko Izutsu, in his book Sufism and Taoism, found similarities between Taoism and Muslim mysticism or Sufism. The book under review attempts to discover compatibility between Sufism and modern cosmology. It is basically a research book with more than seven hundred (700) citations of authorities of various disciplines, drawing from a vast array of diverse fields, such as physics, philosophy, biology, psychology and spirituality. The book probes into the nature and value of existence which ultimately leads to the direction of interconnection of the universe and human psyche; unity and integration of all things, and ultimately the unity of the whole universe and the whole person. These views are not placed on the shaky foundations of faith but they are based on philosophical logic and scientific facts--regarding importance of man as an observer in the universe, despite appearing insignificant on a point-like planet in the stunning vastness of empty space, and magnificent integration and harmony of the human psyche with the cosmos.

These aspects of the book are unique in the sense that they amazingly reveal commonalities between physical and spiritual concepts and explain the phenomenon of existence as a compact whole in a coherent and logical sequence, with a glimpse of futuristic existence. This book may be of particular interest to the academia, research scholars, and students who may find the contents of the book unique and even startling.

The author of the book is a research scholar from Pakistan who has been dedicated to exploring the reality of the physical world and human life. He has accentuated quite subtle and intricate issues in his book. His contribution to the relevant subject appears to have originality and, at times, remarkable distinction. The author believes that the contents of this book may not be found in any other single book published so far.

John H. Walton on the Ancient Context and Modern Significance of Genesis One

In The Lost World of Genesis One, John H. Walton proposes a fresh reading of Genesis that remains faithful to the original context and that preserves and enhances the theological vitality of the text. Walton addresses key areas of controversy among Christians, including the relationship between Genesis and modern science, particularly covering discussions of evolution, Intelligent Design, and creationism.

The arguments are made through eighteen propositions, presented succinctly and plainly, designed to be accessible to readers without technical expertise. In this astute mix of cultural critique and biblical studies, these propositions support a literary and theological understanding of Genesis 1 within the context of the ancient Near Eastern world and unpack its implications for our modern scientific understanding of origins.

In The Lost World of Genesis One, Walton's thoughtful analysis

unpacks seldom appreciated aspects of the biblical text;

provides thought-provoking ideas for thinking about the Bible, theology, faith and science; and

gives Bible-believing scientists freedom to investigate the question of origins.

Whether you are a student, professor, pastor, or lay reader with an interest in the Intelligent Design and creation-evolution discussions, you'll find that Walton's well-reasoned propositions in The Lost World of Genesis One provide valuable insights for modern discussions on creation and origins.

About the Series

The books in the Lost World Series follow the pattern set by Bible scholar John H. STAR-FLIGHT .... The Last Generation Investigations into Hebrew Cosmology in Relation to the Timing of the Day of the Lord【電子書籍】[ Albert LeBouef ]

One of my first exposures to the topic of biblical astronomy came through the writings of the late Dr. D. James Kennedy on the subject. He was among the very few clergy who was not turned of by the mere mention of the word “zodiac” and pursued the ‘rest of the story’ underlying this vast cosmic cinema. While many have now written on the general topic, very few have asked the question as to the whether the information encoded within these star-pictures viewed by the Magi and all nations might also have significance for our generation?

The Cipher grew out of two observations that would lead to a question. The observations being: (1) The Christian church has had a 2000-year “zero” batting average in dealing with understanding the general timing of the Second Advent, and (2) The only group that understood the timing of the advent in the last 2500 years were the Magi who, following a star, journeyed to Jerusalem in search of The Promise.

These observations led to the fundamental query: Is there something that we can learn from the cosmology of the Magi that might help contemporary Christians to better discern the season of Messiah’s Second Advent? Before its pagan corruption the Mazzaroth (zodiac) served as a story-calendar dealing with the redemptive journey of the Son of man (Messiah) and a chronometer (clock) relating to the timing that grand quest. The Cipher begins to address these two aspects of the biblical Mazzaroth.

Non-minimal Higgs Inflation and Frame Dependence in Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Christian Friedrich Steinwachs ]

This thesis explores the idea that the Higgs boson of the Standard Model and the cosmological inflation are just two manifestations of one and the same scalar field - the Higgs-inflation. By this unification two energy scales that are separated by many orders of magnitude are connected, thereby building a bridge between particle physics and cosmology. An essential ingredient for making this model consistent with observational data is a strong non-minimal coupling to gravity. Predictions for the value of the Higgs mass as well as for cosmological parameters are derived, and can be tested by future experiments. The results become especially exciting in the light of the recently announced discovery of the Higgs boson.
The model of non-minimal Higgs inflation is also used in a quantum cosmological context to predict initial conditions for inflation. These results can in turn be tested by the detection of primordial gravitational waves.
The presentation includes all introductory material about cosmology and the Standard Model that is essential for the further understanding. It also provides an introduction to the mathematical methods used to calculate the effective action by heat kernel methods.

Astrology and Cosmology in Early China Conforming Earth to Heaven【電子書籍】[ David W. Pankenier ]

The ancient Chinese were profoundly influenced by the Sun, Moon and stars, making persistent efforts to mirror astral phenomena in shaping their civilization. In this pioneering text, David W. Pankenier introduces readers to a seriously understudied field, illustrating how astronomy shaped the culture of China from the very beginning and how it influenced areas as disparate as art, architecture, calendrical science, myth, technology, and political and military decision-making. As elsewhere in the ancient world, there was no positive distinction between astronomy and astrology in ancient China, and so astrology, or more precisely, astral omenology, is a principal focus of the book. Drawing on a broad range of sources, including archaeological discoveries, classical texts, inscriptions and paleography, this thought-provoking book documents the role of astronomical phenomena in the development of the 'Celestial Empire' from the late Neolithic through the late imperial period.

A critical sketch of Charles Sanders Peirce's beliefs on the origin of the universe and its evolutionary development.

Charles Sanders Peirce was a nineteenth-century American philosopher and logician known as the father of pragmatism. He devoted much attention to the subject of cosmology, or the origin and development of the universe, but he did not produce substantial work on the subject. In this text, Peter T. Turley collects and analyzes Peirce's writings on what he called "physical metaphysics." Peirce's Cosmology offers a view of nature that may seem commonplace today, but in his time, it represented a break with traditional theories of philosophy and science. His trailblazing writings and Turley's analysis are sure to be of interest to readers of many schools of thought.
