Physical Foundations of Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Viatcheslav Mukhanov ]
|

Inflationary cosmology has been developed over the last twenty years to remedy serious shortcomings in the standard hot big bang model of the universe. This textbook, first published in 2005, explains the basis of modern cosmology and shows where the theoretical results come from. The book is divided into two parts; the first deals with the homogeneous and isotropic model of the Universe, the second part discusses how inhomogeneities can explain its structure. Established material such as the inflation and quantum cosmological perturbation are presented in great detail, however the reader is brought to the frontiers of current cosmological research by the discussion of more speculative ideas. An ideal textbook for both advanced students of physics and astrophysics, all of the necessary background material is included in every chapter and no prior knowledge of general relativity and quantum field theory is assumed.

Cosmology The Science of the Universe【電子書籍】[ Edward Harrison ]
|

Cosmology: The Science of the Universe is an introduction to past and present cosmological theory. For much of the world's history, cosmological thought was formulated in religious or philosophical language and was thus theological or metaphysical in nature. However, cosmological speculation and theory is now a science in which the empirical discoveries of the astronomer, theoretical physicist, and biologist are woven into intricate models that attempt to account for the universe as a whole. Professor Harrison draws on the discoveries and speculations of these scientists to provide a comprehensive survey of mankind's current understanding of the universe and its history. Tracing the rise of the scientific method, the major aim of this book is to provide an elementary understanding of the physical universe of modern times. This second edition, originally published in 2000, has received high praise for Harrison's wide-ranging insights into the universe at large.

The Little Book of Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Lyman Page ]
|

The cutting-edge science that is taking the measure of the universe

The Little Book of Cosmology provides a breathtaking look at our universe on the grandest scales imaginable. Written by one of the world's leading experimental cosmologists, this short but deeply insightful book describes what scientists are revealing through precise measurements of the faint thermal afterglow of the Big Bangーknown as the cosmic microwave background, or CMBーand how their findings are transforming our view of the cosmos.

Blending the latest findings in cosmology with essential concepts from physics, Lyman Page first helps readers to grasp the sheer enormity of the universe, explaining how to understand the history of its formation and evolution in space and time. Then he sheds light on how spatial variations in the CMB formed, how they reveal the age, size, and geometry of the universe, and how they offer a blueprint for the formation of cosmic structure.

Not only does Page explain current observations and measurements, he describes how they can be woven together into a unified picture to form the Standard Model of Cosmology. Yet much remains unknown, and this incisive book also describes the search for ever deeper knowledge at the field's frontiersーfrom quests to understand the nature of neutrinos and dark energy to investigations into the physics of the very early universe.

Proving God Exists: Physics, Cosmology, and the Universal Mind【電子書籍】[ Ken Levi ]

God is real. The evidence is solid and extensive. It's not based on blind faith or wishful thinking, but on hard science. The starting point is to strip away layers of mysticism and superstition surrounding the question of God; then, to ask: what do we really mean by a "Supreme Being"? How can we describe Him? And what evidence do we have such a Being exists? In addressing these questions, the book relies on physics and cosmology; on Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, String Theory, Black Hole Theory, Thermodynamics, Loop Quantum Gravity, and others. Ultimately, the scientific evidence leads to a provocative conclusion: the presence of a Universal Mind.

Cosmology in Antiquity【電子書籍】[ Rosemary Wright ]

The popularity of Stephen Hawking's work has put cosmology back in the public eye. The question of how the universe began, and why it hangs together, still puzzles scientists. Their puzzlement began two and a half thousand years ago when Greek philosophers first 'looked up at the sky and formed a theory of everything.' Though their solutions are little credited today, the questions remain fresh.
The early Greek thinkers struggled to come to terms with and explain the totality of their surroundings; to identitify an original substance from which the universe was compounded; and to reconcile the presence of balance and proportion with the apparent disorder of the universe.
Rosemary Wright examines the cosmological theories of the `natural philosophers' from Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes to Plato, the Stoics and the NeoPlatonists. The importance of Babylonian and Egyptian forerunners is emphasised.
Cosmology in Antiquity is a comprehensive introduction to the cosmological thought of antiquity, the first such survey since Neugebauer's work of 1962.

Cosmology and Biology in Ancient Philosophy From Thales to Avicenna【
|

In antiquity living beings are inextricably linked to the cosmos as a whole. Ancient biology and cosmology depend upon one another and therefore a complete understanding of one requires a full account of the other. This volume addresses many philosophical issues that arise from this double relation. Does the cosmos have a soul of its own? Why? Is either of these two disciplines more basic than the other, or are they at the same explanatory level? What is the relationship between living things and the cosmos as a whole? If the cosmos is an animate intelligent being, what is the nature of its thoughts and actions? How do these relate to our own thoughts and actions? Do they pose a threat to our autonomy as subjects and agents? And what is the place of zoogony in cosmogony? A distinguished international team of contributors provides original essays discussing these questions.

To evade conflict, Northern Zapotec communities denounced ritual specialists and surrendered sacred songs and 102 divinatory manuals, which preserve cosmological accounts, exchanges with divine beings, and protocols of pre-Columbian origin that strongly resemble sections of the Codex Borgia. These texts were sent to Spain as evidence of failed Dominican evangelization efforts, and there they remained, in oblivion, until the 1960s.

In this book, David Tav?rez dives deep into this formidable archive of ritual and divinatory manuals, the largest calendar corpus in the colonial Americas, and emerges with a rich understanding of Indigenous social and cultural history, Mesoamerican theories of cosmos and time, and Zapotec ancestor worship. Drawing on his knowledge of Zapotec and Nahuatl, two decades of archival research, and a decade of fieldwork, Tav?rez dissects Mesoamerican calendars as well as Native resistance and accommodation to the colonial conquest of time, while also addressing entangled transatlantic histories and shining new light on texts still connected to contemporary observances in Zapotec communities.

For many years there has been a growing conflict between the evidence we have been accumulating and the assumptions we have had about the nature of reality. We can no longer maintain the belief in a strictly physical world composed of solid physical matter; our reality is much larger, more dynamic, and more malleable than that kind of substance would allow. In this book David Judd explores the evidence from quantum physics, academia and mysticism that is leading us to new understandings of ourselves and the world we live in. We have embarked on an exciting new journey that holds great promise for the future of humankind.

Artificial Intelligence Models for the Dark Universe Forays in Mathematical Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Ariel Fern?ndez ]
|

The dark universe contains matter and energy unidentifiable with current physical models, accounting for 95% of all the matter and energetic equivalent in the universe. The enormous surplus brings up daunting enigmas, such as the cosmological constant problem and the apparent distortions in the dynamics of deep space, and so coming to grips with the invisible universe has become a scientific imperative.

This book addresses this need, reckoning that no cogent physical model of the dark universe can be implemented without first addressing the metaphysical hurdles along the way. The foremost problem is identifying the topology of the universe which, as argued in the book, is highly relevant to unveil the secrets of the dark universe.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a valuable tool in this effort since it can reconcile conflicting data from deep space with the extant laws of physics by building models to decipher the dark universe. This book explores the applications of AI and how it can be used to embark on a metaphysical quest to identify the topology of the universe as a prerequisite to implement a physical model of the dark sector that enables a meaningful extrapolation into the visibile sector.

The book is intended for a broad readership, but a background in college-level physics and computer science is essential. The book will be a valuable guide for graduate students as well as researchers in physics, astrophysics, and computer science focusing on AI applications to elucidate the nature of the dark universe.

Key Features:

・ Provides readers with an intellectual toolbox to understand physical arguments on dark matter and energy.

・ Up to date with the latest cutting-edge research.

・ Authored by an expert on artificial intelligence and mathematical physics.

The New Paradigm in Cosmology【
|

SelectBooks is pleased to announce the publication of our e-book titled The New Paradigm in Cosmology. This book compiled and edited by Richard Blum is based on the second Online Global Symposium of The New Paradigm Symposia Series sponsored by the Laszlo Institute of New Paradigm Research. In December, 1921, leading cosmologists from around the world presented their latest thoughts and theories, including some unique perspectives on the branch of astronomy and metaphysics that deals with the nature of our cosmos. The Laszlo Institute' s first online symposium in the series in July, 2021, was on the subject of contemporary politics. Our e-book titled The New Paradigm in Politics summarized the symposium' s presentations exploring the meso-dimension of human affairs and experiences that constitute our everyday reality. Participants in the symposium heard a rich exchange among leading authorities on governance, policy making, organization development, law, and civil society. The dynamics of this self-organizing, participatory community event revealed how interdependent and truly interrelated we areー not just as people on this planet but as part of the way our Earth itself evolves and adapts. We might ask why a research institute committed to improving the state of the contemporary world hold a symposium on cosmology. How does the cosmos factor into determining the state of human beings on this planet? In order to understand this relationship, perhaps we should first consider the meanings of " cosmos" and " universe." K? smos in the original Greek sense of the word is the totality of all that exists. It is eternal, infinite in time, and if our reality is truly fixedー and nothing is transitoryー the cosmos is also infinite in space. Today, our " universe" refers to a different reality. According to current scientific conceptions, the universe is not infinite in time. Nor is it infinite in space. It is a limited spacetime domain within the all-encompassing reality we call cosmos, supporting the theory that our universe had its origin at a given point and has been persisting in time and expanding in space ever since the big bang. To answer the question of why information regarding such a universe is relevant to human concerns, the answer is this: If the universe arose within the womb of the cosmos and is not an eternally fixed domain but is subject to change, development, and " evolution," the way it changes could be an indication of laws and regularities that govern change and evolution within the universe. If so, the evolution of the universe as a whole is relevant to the existence of things within it, including human existence. Humankind can then be viewed as an integrally linked part of a holistic universeー the same as every quantum and every galaxy in space and time. SelectBooks e-books based on the New Paradigm Symposia Series The New Paradigm in Politics published in March, 2022, is compiled by Anneloes Smitsman and Alexander Laszlo. The New Paradigm in Cosmology edited and compiled by Richard Blum will be published in October, 2022. Emergent Gauge Symmetries in Particle Physics and Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Steven D Bass ]
|

The Standard Model and General Relativity provide an excellent description of our present measurements in particle physics and gravitation. Yet we know that new physics is needed. Puzzles include tiny neutrino masses, baryogenesis (the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe), dark energy and dark matter as well as the physics associated with primordial inflation.

The book develops the idea of an emergent Standard Model: that its gauge symmetries and particles might be 'born' in a topological like phase transition deep in the ultraviolet with the Standard Model parameters (the masses and couplings) linked to the stability of the vacuum. With emergence the gauge symmetries would 'dissolve' in the extreme ultraviolet instead of extra unification. Neutrinos would be their own antiparticles. The cosmological constant scale comes out naturally in this approach, similar in size to the value of light Majorana neutrino masses. There are also interesting constraints on dark matter scenarios.

Following an introduction to the Standard Model and the present status of our knowledge of fundamental interactions, the book discusses the key ideas of vacuum stability and emergent gauge symmetries. The phenomenology of an emergent Standard Model and its consequences for cosmology and early Universe physics are then explored. With a new generation of experiments both in particle and gravitational physics soon to begin plus expected advances in cosmology, the book serves both as an introduction and invitation to join new thinking in this physics with possible deep connections between the world of experiments and physics in the far ultraviolet.

Contents:

Introduction

The Standard Model: Gauge Symmetries in Particle Physics

Vacuum Stability and Running Couplings

Renormalisation and Quantum Field Theory Anomalies

Emergent Gauge Symmetries and Particle Physics

Emergent Gauge Symmetries in Quantum Condensed Matter Systems

Gravitational and General Relativity

Cosmology: The Interface of Particle Physics and Gravitation

Vacuum Energy and the Cosmological Constant

Scale Hierarchies

Emergence and Open Puzzles

Conclusions

Readership: Graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the fields of particle physics, cosmology, astronomy and astrophysics ー both theoreticians and experimentalists.
'Steven Bass' book on emergent symmetries makes a compelling case for the new paradigm of emergence as the guiding principle for understanding elementary particle physics and its mysteries and open problems. There is a need to understand and find the patterns that characterize the Standard Model of particle physics and provide clues to solutions to unsolved problems in particle physics and cosmology, where gravity merges with particle physics. Condensed matter physics is a treasure trove of emergent phenomena that often helps to understand structures such as renormalizable quantum field theories and their underlying symmetries. Enjoy reading this comprehensive introduction and gain a new perspective on particle physics, cosmology, and what nature might reveal to us beyond.' - Professor Fred JegerlehnerDESY-Zeuthen and Humboldt Universit?t zu Berlin

'This is a great book that challenges our thinking about extensions of the modern theory of elementary interactions, the Standard Model, and its interface with cosmology. The Standard Model, completed by the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC in 2012, is astonishingly successful in describing all so far observed phenomena in particle physics, except the tiny neutrino masses. Its underlying principle is gauge symmetry. The simplest dynamical system, considered by many as a toy model, self-interacting scalar field responsible for the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism as the origin of the Fermi scale is now promoted to a real thing. The Standard Model, combined with the picture of the thermal universe also explains the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and what has happened in the universe after that. However, neutrino masses and the very early universe with its dark matter production and baryon-antibaryon asymmetry generation call for extending the Standard Model. The most common approach is to search, so far unsuccessfully, for new mass scales and for even more fundamental gauge symmetries, like for instance Grand Unification of all elementary forces. The author takes a radically different point of view. After a compact and perfectly presented review of the basics of the Standard Model, he shows that the gauge symmetry of the Standard Model can be an effective, 'low energy' pattern of elementary interactions, which dissolves at high energy in some topological phase transitions. Such an approach is predictive, avoids certain puzzles of the Standard Model and can address its limitations! The book is refreshing and definitely worth reading.' - Professor Stefan PokorskiUniversity of Warsaw

Shakespeare’s Knowledge of Astronomy and the Birth of Modern Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Peter D. Usher ]
|

In a novel reading of Shakespeare’s plays, this book addresses an observation first made many decades ago, that Shakespeare appears to neglect the intellectual upheavals that astronomy brought about in his lifetime. The author examines temporal, situational, and verbal anomalies in Hamlet and other plays using hermeneutic-dialectic methodology, and finds a consistent pattern of interpretation that is compatible with the history of astronomy and with the development of modern cosmology. He also demonstrates how Shakespeare takes into account beliefs about the nature of the heavens from the time of Pythagoras up to and including discoveries and theories in the first decade of the seventeenth century. The book makes the case that, as in many other fields, Shakespeare’s celestial knowledge is far beyond what was commonly known at the time.

Students and teachers interested in Shakespeare’s alleged indifference towards, or ignorance of, the celestial sciences will find this book illuminating, as will historians of science and scholars whose work focuses on epistemology and its relationship to the canon, and on how Shakespeare acquired the data that his plays deliver.

The Mythic Mind Essays on Cosmology and Religion in Ugaritic and Old Testament Literature【電子書籍】[ Nicolas Wyatt ]
|

The Mythic Mind follows the tradition of works which insist on the necessity for a comparative dimension in the study of ancient Israel. The Israelite world-view was essentially a West Semitic world-view in origin, with additional deeply embedded influences from Egypt and Mesopotamia, though it produced its own distinctive character by way of synthesis and reaction. The essays in this volume explore various aspects of this process, historically and cosmologically, commonly challenging received views developed in the treatment of Israel in isolation. The importance of the Ugaritic texts in particular, as reflecting the cultural context in which ancient Israel developed into two symbiotic kingdoms, heirs to a common 'Canaanite' tradition, emerges clearly from such studies as chapter 5: 'Sea and Desert', chapter 7: 'Of Calves and Kings', chapter 9: 'The Significance of Spn' and chapter 10: 'The Vocabulary and Neurology of Orientation.'

Architecture, Ritual and Cosmology in China The Buildings of the Order of the Dong【電子書籍】[ Xuemei Li ]
|

Drawing on the author’s extensive fieldwork in the Dong areas in southwest China, this book presents a detailed picture of the Dong’s buildings and techniques, with new insights into the Dong’s cosmology and rituals of everyday life meshed with the architecture, and the symbolic meanings. It examines how the buildings and techniques of the Dong are ordered and influenced by the local culture and context.

The timber bridges and drum towers are the Dong’s most prominent architectural monuments. Usually built elaborately with multiple roofs, these bridges and drum towers were designed and maintained by the local carpenters who also built the village suspended houses, in an oral tradition carried down from father to son or to apprentice. They were funded entirely by the local people, and the bridges tend to be built in places without great pressure of traffic or another bridge already existing close by. Why does such great expense go into the Dong’s buildings with elaboration? How were they built? And what do they mean to their users and builders?

This book is an anthropological study on the Dong’s architecture and technique, and it aims to contribute a discourse on the interdisciplinary research area. It is suitable for graduate and postgraduate readers.

Purity and Exile Violence, Memory, and National Cosmology among Hutu Refugees in Tanzania【電子書籍】[ Liisa H. Malkki ]
|

In this study of Hutu refugees from Burundi, driven into exile in Tanzania after their 1972 insurrection against the dominant Tutsi was brutally quashed, Liisa Malkki shows how experiences of dispossession and violence are remembered and turned into narratives, and how this process helps to construct identities such as "Hutu" and "Tutsi."
Through extensive fieldwork in two refugee communities, Malkki finds that the refugees' current circumstances significantly influence these constructions. Those living in organized camps created an elaborate "mythico-history" of the Hutu people, which gave significance to exile, and envisioned a collective return to the homeland of Burundi. Other refugees, who had assimilated in a more urban setting, crafted identities in response to the practical circumstances of their day to day lives. Malkki reveals how such things as national identity, historical consciousness, and the social imagination of "enemies" get constructed in the process of everyday life. The book closes with an epilogue looking at the recent violence between Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda and Burundi, and showing how the movement of large refugee populations across national borders has shaped patterns of violence in the region.

Modern General Relativity Black Holes, Gravitational Waves, and Cosmology【電子書籍】[ Mike Guidry ]
|

Einstein's general theory of relativity is widely considered to be one of the most elegant and successful scientific theories ever developed, and it is increasingly being taught in a simplified form at advanced undergraduate level within both physics and mathematics departments. Due to the increasing interest in gravitational physics, in both the academic and the public sphere, driven largely by widely-publicised developments such as the recent observations of gravitational waves, general relativity is also one of the most popular scientific topics pursued through self-study. Modern General Relativity introduces the reader to the general theory of relativity using an example-based approach, before describing some of its most important applications in cosmology and astrophysics, such as gamma-ray bursts, neutron stars, black holes, and gravitational waves. With hundreds of worked examples, explanatory boxes, and end-of-chapter problems, this textbook provides a solid foundation for understanding one of the towering achievements of twentieth-century physics.

NEW DIMENSIONS IN ELEMENTARY PARTICLE PHYSICS AND COSMOLOGY summarizes certain results of the author's theoretical research toward developing a mathematically very simple Unified Theory of Elementary Particles and Interactions (UTOEPI.) Here the masses of the particles of the Standard Model, including the Higgs boson (the the socalled God Particle), are directly represented in terms of the interaction. The book introduces a new paradigm of a three-dimensional time, as an essential extension of Einstein's relativity theory. Interrelation between the classical and quantum physics is illustrated. Examples of applications in cosmology and the significance of the neutron decay in the evolution of matter, and of life on the earth, are included.
