Commercial Fishing in Alaska The Prospective Deckhand's Guide【電子書籍】[ Steven Olson ]

This Prospective Guide isn’t here to hold your hand and walk you step-by-step through your adventure. Because that’s not adventure. No, this guide is here to offer some perspective. To share some tales. To offer a few opinions. To help you decide on which path to take. But the joy remains in the unknown.

That’s the Prospective Perspective.

Excerpt:

"So you’re interested in a little northern adventure, eh? A little salt in your hair, jellyfish in your nose, and tears in your eyes? Well, good news ー the “last frontier” isn’t all hype. There’s some substance to your dreams.

But be warned, we’re talking about going down the rabbit hole, here.

If you succeed in landing a job, commercial fishing may very well turn your life on its head, skew your perspective, scramble your priorities. It’s not just another job. It’s an alternative lifestyle; a full-immersion experience. And once a person becomes accustomed to it ー the physical exertion, the isolation, the money, the mental strain, and the absurd beauty of it all ー it’s difficult to go back to a normal life. Because, in comparison, normal life is boring, easy, monotonous. "

This Prospective Guide offers a practical approach to getting your foot in the door of this lucrative industry. At about 8,000 words, it's not stuffed with fluff and useless info, just what you need to know to get on the path north. Included are detailed tables of fishing seasons and regional money breakdowns to help you pick your point of attack, and personal accounts from the author to give you a realistic perspective of what to expect. Full-color photos and an FAQ section round out this little beauty of a catch.

Most guide books on the subject are painful reading experiences because the author is either A: highly experienced in the fisheries, but has inversely proportional writing skills, or B: A talented, soft-skinned writer/researcher with no personal experience in the elements. This one's different.

About the Author: Steven Olson, a graduate of the creative writing program at Colorado Mesa University, has been commercial fishing in Alaska since 2007. The off-seasons have found him everywhere from teaching English in South Korea, to trekking in Colombia, and diving in Indonesia. His writing has appeared in Grand Valley Magazine, and his fiction was awarded first place in the 2010 Colorado Mesa Literary Review.

Randy of the River; Or, The Adventures of a Young Deckhand【電子書籍】[ Horatio Alger ]

*** Original and Unabridged Content. Made available by GOLDEN CLASSIC PRESS***

Synopsis:
Life on a river steamboat is not so romantic as some young people may imagine, but Randy Thompson wanted work and took what was offered. Randy escapes a bad home life to work hard on a steamship and finds lessons in life and success - and there are lots of lessons. Here is the classic American novel from the greatest inspirational writer of all time! Randy of the River by Horatio Alger tells the story of a youth of sturdy qualities who elects to follow the calling of a deckhand on a Hudson River steamboat, doing his duty faithfully day by day, and trying to help others as well as himself. Like all other boys he is at times tempted to do wrong, but he has a heart of gold even though it is hidden by a somewhat ragged outer garment, and in the end proves the truth of that old saying that it pays to be honest, -not only in regard to others but also regarding one's self. Life on a river steamboat is not so romantic as some young people may imagine. There is hard work and plenty of it, and the remuneration is not of the best. But Randy Thompson wanted work and took what was offered. His success in the end was well deserved, and perhaps the lesson his doings teach will not be lost upon those who peruse these pages. This is one of the several stories left by the late Horatio Alger, Jr., at his death, and is one of his strongest. Randy is a bright and natural lad, and his adventures are largely such as might fall to the lot of any youth similarly placed. Life on a Hudson River steamer is well described, and one cannot but help become interested in a number of the travelers, and in the young deckhand who did his duty faithfully under some trying circumstances. Several scenes are in fact extremely amusing.

Deckhand Life on Freighters of the Great Lakes【電子書籍】[ Nelson Haydamacker ]

Long before popular television shows such as Dirty Jobs and The Deadliest Catch, everyday men and women---the unsung heroes of the job world---toiled in important but mostly anonymous jobs. One of those jobs was deckhand on the ore boats.

With numerous photographs and engaging stories, Deckhand offers an insider's view of both the mundane and the intriguing duties performed by deckhands on these gritty cargo vessels. Boisterous port saloons, monster ice jams, near drownings, and the daily drudgery of soogeying---cleaning dirt and grime off the ships---are just a few of the experiences Mickey Haydamacker had as a young deckhand working on freighters of the Great Lakes in the early 1960s. Haydamacker sailed five Interlake Steamship Company boats, from the modern Elton Hoyt 2nd to the ancient coal-powered Colonel James Pickands with its backbreaking tarp-covered hatches.

Deckhand will appeal to shipping buffs and to anyone interested in Great Lakes shipping and maritime history as it chronicles the adventures of living on the lakes from the seldom-seen view of a deckhand.

Mickey Haydamacker spent his youth as a deckhand sailing on the freighters of the Great Lakes. During the 1962 and '63 seasons Nelson sailed five different Interlake Steamship Company ore boats. He later went on to become an arson expert with the Michigan State Police, retiring with the rank of Detective Sergeant.

Alan D. Millar, to whom Haydamacker related his tale of deckhanding, spent his career as a gift store owner and often wrote copy for local newspaper, TV, and radio.

Randy of the River or The Adventures of a Young Deckhand【電子書籍】[ Alger ]

According to Wikipedia: "Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author whose principal output was formulaic juvenile novels that followed the adventures of bootblacks, newsboys, peddlers, buskers, and other impoverished children in their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of respectable middle-class security and comfort. His novels were hugely popular in their day. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, the son of a Unitarian minister, Alger entered Harvard at the age of 16. Following graduation, he briefly worked in education before touring Europe for almost a year. He then entered the Harvard Divinity School, and, in 1864, took a position at a Unitarian church in Brewster, Massachusetts. Two years later, he resigned following a pederastic scandal involving two teenage boys. He subsequently retired from the ministry entirely and moved to New York City where he formed an association with the Newsboys Lodging House and other agencies offering aid to impoverished children. His empathy for the working boys of the city, coupled with the moral values learned at home, were the basis of his many juvenile "[rags to riches]" novels. He died in 1899. The first Alger biography was published in 1928, and later proved to be heavily fictionalized. Other biographies followed, sometimes citing the 1928 hoax as fact. In the last decades of the twentieth century however, a few reliable biographies were published that corrected the errors and fictionalizations of the past. Many of Alger's works have been described as rags to riches stories, illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream of wealth and success through hard work, courage, determination, and concern for others. This widely held view involves Alger's characters achieving extreme wealth and the subsequent remediation of their "old ghosts." Alger is noted as a significant figure in the history of American cultural and social ideals."
