Welcome to the thirteenth annual Delmarva Review, an independent, nonprofit literary journal. Our editors have selected the new work of 64 authors that stood out from thousands of submissions during the year. In this edition, we are publishing 79 poems, 10 short stories, 11 creative nonfiction essays, and seven book reviews. In all, the writers come from twenty-one states, the District of Columbia, and five foreign countries. Forty-two percent are from the Delmarva and Chesapeake region, though the review welcomes the best new writing in English from all writers, regardless of borders.

The cover photograph, “Cedar Island Watch House,” by contributing photographer Jay P. Fleming, captures the feeling of nature’s power and suggests the increasing concern of climate change.

A number of human themes are represented in this issue. One, in particular, gives life to the othersーchange. We strive to deal with change in our daily lives. While change can be uncomfortable, often confronting personal denial, it finds its natural place in all forms of writing. After all, it is the change in a character’s life that creates the action of a good story…or in the narrative description that adheres to our strongest beliefs and emotions. As our lives change, we are forced to discover the truth to guide us on our journeys, or perhaps to make sense of where we have been. The search for meaning is the basis for the best of enduring literature.

Rudow's e-Guide to Chesapeake and Delmarva Striper Fishing【電子書籍】[ Lenny Rudow ]
|

This book is a collection of how-to/where-to striped bass fishing articles by noted fisherman/outdoors writer Lenny Rudow. In it, he covers detailed tackle, tactics, and locations for targeting rockfish while angling in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and off the Delmarva coast. Chumming, trolling,light-tackle casting, night fishing, eeling, jigging, and more are all explained.
The book includes 16 distinct chapters which address specific tactics and places striper anglers will be interested in. Chapter one covers how to fish tributaries and the shallows, when strong winds make accessing the Chesapeake or larger waters impossible. Chapter two covers how to bottom bounce (a trolling technique). Fishing at warm water discharges such as Calvert Cliffs is covered in chapter three. Next, Rudow addresses tactics for locating larger fish, when lots of throw-backs are around. In chapter five, the do's and dont's of shallow water light tackle casting are covered. Then in chapter six, basic and advanced fall chumming techniques are addressed. Chapter seven focuses on night fishing, and chapter eight, on how to target trophy spring stripers on light tackle. Then in chapter nine, the topic is live-lining for stripers. Chapter ten is a where-to article on Poplar Island. Chapter eleven deals with locating and catching late-fall sea-run trophy fish. And in chapter twelve, Rudow covers how to fish the Chesapeake Bay Bridges, the rockpiles, and the sewer pipe. In thirteen, he addresses the specifics of fishing Thomas Point. In chapter fourteen, the topic is how to eel for stripers. Fifteen covers both the basics and advanced tactics for spring chumming, and finally, in chapter sixteen we learn low-light tactics that will help anglers fill their fishboxes.
Anglers up and down the coast have been reading Lenny Rudow's how-to/where-to fishing articles for decades. This e-guide is the first in a series meant to collect his writings into a species-specific work which will allow anglers and fishermen to get the exact knowledge they need to catch more fish. The information is detailed, and specific.
"I don't believe in writing about generalities," Rudow says. "You can find a million articles and books that are a little helpfull, but it's hard to fish fishing books which really do give away the "secret" tips and tricks that make the difference between catching a fish or two, and having a full fishbox. Rudow's e-Guide to Chesapeake and Delmarva Striper Fishing will include that information. You have my word on it," he said.

|

Welcome to the twelfth annual edition of the Delmarva Review, our current contribution to discovering the best of literary work. Our editors selected the original new prose and poetry of fifty-three authors from thousands of submissions. Individually and collectively, the writing in this volume touches us as human beings. We can also enjoy the authors’ craft and unique voice in the telling of stories and poetry. Our editors selected 72 poems, 10 short stories, and nine nonfiction essays. We also reviewed six recent books of special interest, by regional writers. In all, the authors come from 17 states, the District of Columbia, and four other countries. We are especially pleased to feature the poetry of Meredith Davies Hadaway. Poetry Editor Anne Colwell interviewed Meredith about her work, and six of her poems follow the interview. While there is not one common theme emerging from this year’s work, there is an existential darkness that embodies many of the stories and poems. Perhaps that is a sign of our times. The cover photograph, “Rough Water,” by contributing photographer Jay P. Fleming, perfectly embodies the themes from this year’s selections. Jay’s photograph provides the feeling of nature’s power and passion, which is expressed throughout this year’s writing.

THROUGH THE AUTHOR’S VOICE, we discover qualities and truths about ourselves. Perhaps more than anything else this describes the strength of our connections with literature.

Welcome to the Delmarva Review’s 15th anniversary edition. Writing from 60 authors was selected from thousands of submissions during the year. This issue includes 78 poems, 11 short stories, and 12 nonfiction essays. In all, the writers come from 18 states, the District of Columbia, and 6 foreign countries. The review welcomes the best new writing in English from all writers regardless of borders.

This year’s cover photograph of an osprey, The Fisherman, tells its own story. The osprey, with wings spread exhibiting his power, has positioned himself high above the water on a storm-broken tree trunk, his talons clutching a partially devoured fish. The osprey’s purpose is not so much the fish as it is his desire to lure a suitable mate for the season’s nest. Thematically, the image exhibits the territorial imperative shared by most animals, including humans.

Each story or poem in this issue has its own message. No singular theme was selected for the edition. As a literary collection, we focus on the most compelling new writing and what is at stake or at risk emotionally or intellectually in the author’s work.

Popular topics include grief, death, pain, love, living, place, acceptance, freedom, aging, and the uncertainty of life, among others. They have one quality in commonーchangeーand the uncomfortable challenges of dealing with change.

The book is divided into three major genre sections: Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. An editor’s interview with a featured writer opens each section. The interviews are designed to set a tone for the writing that follows and draw attention to the authors’ intentionsーwhat they were thinking when they wrote the piece or the choices they faced.
This year’s fiction includes a “flash fiction” piece from the first recipient of the Delmarva Review-Talbot County Youth Writing Scholarship award. In partnership with Talbot County Schools and supported by a grant from the Talbot Arts Council, the review selected “E Duo Unum” from Maxine Poe-Jensen, now a high school senior at St. Michaels High School. The student collaborated with one of our editors, as a mentor, to prepare for publication in the Delmarva Review, and she received a monetary award. The program is part of the review’s ongoing efforts to promote the literary arts regionally among aspiring young writers.

Journey to the coast with Michael Morgan as he looks back at the area's most deadly storms.

Coastal Delaware, Maryland and Virginia have always been vulnerable to the power of storms. In the early nineteenth century, storm-driven shipwrecks led to the construction of the Delaware breakwater. In 1933, a storm created an inlet on the south edge of Ocean City and changed the character of the Maryland resort. The Ash Wednesday nor'easter of 1962 devastated oceanfront communities, led to the creation of beach replenishment projects that pushed the ocean back from the new multimillion-dollar buildings that sat on the sand and spurred the creation of Assateague Island National Seashore. Delmarva Review, Volume 14【電子書籍】[ Delmarva Review ]

|

WELCOME TO DELMARVA REVIEW VOLUME 14, an annual, independent, nonprofit literary journal. In this, our largest edition, we selected the new writing of seventy authors that stood out from thousands of submissions during the year. Volume 14 includes ninety-eight poems, thirteen short stories, twelve creative nonfiction essays, and seven book reviews. In all, the writers come from twenty-five states, the District of Columbia, and four foreign countries. About forty percent are from the Delmarva and Chesapeake region, though the review welcomes the best new writing in English from all writers, regardless of borders.
The cover photograph, Tangier Island Light, taken at dusk is by contributing photographer Jay P. Fleming. It was taken as part of Fleming’s work for his wonderful new narrative photography book, Island Life, capturing “a pivotal moment in time for Smith and Tangier.” Life on these isolated islands in the Chesapeake Bayーthe largest estuary in the United Statesーis often considered frozen in time, but Fleming has delved deeper, documenting work and life on the islands “as the very forces that sustain them also threaten to take them away.” While not the theme of the book, or of the Delmarva Review, climate change remains highly concerning. There is no preaching hereーjust the facts, images, and human storiesーand you are likely to learn something new from the content (see the book review in this edition). The rest is up to you.
No singular theme emerges from this issue of the Delmarva Review. As a literary collection, we continue to focus on the best new writing and what is at stake or at risk emotionally or intellectually in the author’s work. The book opens with thoughts about life and death, where we realize the uncertainty of our days. Other topics include loss, desire, aging, equality, haunting regrets, bullying, beliefs, the pandemic, and the list goes on. Ultimately, themes revolve around change. It is through human change that we are forced to discover truths that guide us on our journeys or, perhaps, to make sense of where we have been. This is where our truths count most, usually with discomfort and little room for alternate deception.

|

Welcome to The Delmarva Review, a literary journal publishing compelling prose and poetry, in print and in digital formats, from the region and beyond.
Volume 8 contains the selected work of thirty-five authors from 12 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. This edition includes forty-four poems, a featured author interview, seven short stories, eight essays, and reviews of four recent books by authors in the greater region. The contributing writers give probing expression to many human themes, including individualism, loss, birth, death, love, ego, healing, and a sense of belonging in a larger world.
While the review has historically chosen a variety of topics (and Volume 8 follows this approach), the eighth edition opens with a conversation between poetry editor Anne Colwell and poet Sue Ellen Thompson about Ms. Thompson’s celebrated book, They, discussing family and generational issues and acceptance over having a trans-gender child. Our cover photograph “Nude Torso,” by Portuguese photographer Jorge Pereira Rudolfoelias, illustrates the conversation’s subject.
In 2007, members of the Eastern Shore Writers Association overwhelmingly supported publication of a legitimate literary review, one that welcomed outstanding literary work in English from all authors, regardless of residence. It was a bold step for writers. Welcoming competition for space in print is a humble gesture, to say the least. The Review would offer yet another opportunity to publish literary prose and poetry in print as the general magazine market faced increased financial difficulty.
We are pleased to report that over eight years The Delmarva Review has published new literary work from 216 authors in twenty-seven states, the District of Columbia, and nine other countries. Sixty percent are from the region. This has resulted in thirty-seven Pushcart Prize nominations, as well as mentions in Best American Essays and other venues.
“Thank you,” to members of the Eastern Shore Writers Association for their ongoing support. We are also appreciative of a grant from the Talbot County Arts Council as well as private contributions, and, of course, the countless hours of our volunteers.

Welcome to the 11th annual Delmarva Review, a literary journal publishing exceptional poetry, fiction, and nonfiction in both print and digital editions. Our editors selected the work of 45 authors that stood out from thousands of submissions. Enclosed are 57 poems, 10 short stories, 11 nonfiction and four micro nonfiction selections. We also reviewed five recent books by regional writers. In all, the authors come from 19 states and two other countries.

A common theme emerged from this year’s writing: the discovery or realization of individuality, often during difficult times. Adversity leaves its impression on one’s identity; it shapes us. It can also be celebrated. Individuality and creativity are inseparable.

As a journal, our focus is on the voice and literary qualities of authors’ work to tell their stories. We are impressed by the courage and clarity of a writer to reveal skillfully a personal feeling or truth that will be remembered. They represent human challenges in a changing world. In most cases, the stories take on more than one meaning. In all cases, the voice is authentic.

Welcome to the seventh edition of The Delmarva Review, a
literary journal dedicated to the discovery of compelling new
prose and poetry. We are pleased to present a sampling of voices
and writing styles of 40 contributors from 14 states, the District
of Columbia, and one foreign country. Over a thousand authors
submitted their work for consideration in 2014. As editors, we
are grateful for the opportunity to read their poems, short fiction,
and essays. The published pieces represent a fraction of the good
writing we received.
The cover features doll artifacts that conjure images from
times past. They tease our imaginations with the potential for
discovery. Like the promise of literature, these crafted ceramic
parts have survived generations and traveled far. The dolls were
once whole, their parts attached, like a writer’s characters. Their
purpose was to inspire or entertain an audience.
The pieces, some 100 to 200 years old, were gathered at low
tide from under time-weathered piers in Provincetown harbor, off
Cape Cod. Fine art photographer Roger Camp arranged them to
create the cover photograph, giving them renewed visibility.
The Delmarva Review strives to fulfill two purposes: to
discover and publish new literary work and to inspire other
writers, by example, to pursue excellence in literary writing.
We publish print and electronic editions and, through digital
technology, provide for wide distribution, far beyond an author’s
regional borders. Our writers will reach new, discerning readers.
Readers, many of whom are writers themselves, will find
diversity among the pieces selected for this edition. The writing
that follows will give readers a sense of the writer’s voice and
command of craft. It is likely that something here will engage
and inspire you.
The talented volunteers on the Review’s Editorial Board, join me in
welcoming you to these pages of literary discovery.

|

WELCOME TO THE Delmarva Review’s 16th edition. The writing of 72 authors was selected from thousands of submissions during the year. This annual issue includes 70 poems, 12 short stories, and 14 essays. In all, the writers come from 23 states, the District of Columbia, and four foreign countries.

This year’s cover photograph is called “Eye of the Beholder.” It is a fitting description for the Red-tailed hawk’s large “eye,” on the cover, that allows the raptor to focus on its prey with spatial clarity from great heights at high speed.

The stories or poems in this issue carry a unique message from each author, in her or his own words. Topics naturally include grief, death, pain, love, living, place, acceptance, and freedom, among others. Aging and the uncertainties in life are frequent subjects. All have a common challengeーfacing changeーand the uncomfortable feelings associated with change.

As an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit literary publisher, we are greatly appreciative of the funding support we receive from individual tax-deductible contributions and a public grant from Talbot Arts with revenues from the Maryland State Arts Council.

|

Welcome to the ninth annual Delmarva Review, a literary journal publishing exceptional poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction, in print and digital editions.
As a journal, our focus is on the voice and literary qualities of authors’ work to tell their stories. We do not preselect a theme. Often, we are impressed by the courage or clarity of a writer to reveal skillfully a personal feeling or truth that will resonate with readers and be remembered. In the following pages, contributing writers probe a number of topics: love, loss, aging, addiction, physical and mental illness, personal identity, relationships, and, of course, death.
The cover photograph, “Significant Other,” by George Merrill, is suggestive of human relationships, depicted by two weathered picket gateposts (in Oxford, Maryland) with expressive “eyes,” bound together by a simple tether. The image invites one’s imagination.
In recognition of William Shakespeare's 400th birthday, we are featuring the work of Shakespearean actor and poet James Keegan, from Milton, Delaware, in this issue. His essay explores how the veteran actor draws human qualities from his Shakespearean roles on stage to build contemporary characters in his poetry. Mythological undertones surface throughout much of the writing in this edition.
Volume 9 contains the poetry and prose of thirty-six authors from 11 states. We encourage the work of authors in the greater Chesapeake region, and we welcome all writers, regardless of residence. The writing in this edition includes: forty-seven poems, eight short stories, and 10 essays and memoirs. We also review five recent books by regional authors.
True to our namesake (the Delmarva Peninsula), we have printed a special section in this issue listing 114 current books published by authors from the Chesapeake region. Covering most genres, the list provides an excellent view of the diversity of creative work by regional authors.
During nine years, The Delmarva Review has published new literary prose and poetry from over 250 talented writers in twenty-eight states, the District of Columbia, and nine other countries. This has resulted in authors receiving over forty Pushcart Prize nominations, as well as notable mentions in Best American Essays and other publications.
Our editors, writers, and readers are appreciative of partial funding from a Talbot County Arts Council grant, with revenues provided by the Maryland State Arts Council, and from individual tax-deductible contributions.
It is my pleasure to work with 12 volunteers as editors, readers, and advisors to publish The Delmarva Review. We are passionate about the review’s contribution to the literary arts and the importance of literacy to our culture.

“Details the brazen robberies, shameless kidnappings and heartless murders committed by Delmarva’s legendary criminal.”ーCape Gazette

Truth lies behind the grim legend of Patty Cannon. In the early nineteenth century, Patty and her gang terrorized the Delmarva Peninsula, kidnapping free African American men, women and children. Using surprise and treachery, Cannon even employed a free African American accomplice to lure her unsuspecting prey. Captives who survived confinement in Patty’s cells were sold south. The position of the Cannon home on the shadowy border between Delaware and Maryland allowed her to dodge the law until a local farmer unearthed the remains of her victims in 1829. Patty mysteriously died in jail awaiting trial. Author Michael Morgan investigates the chilling history of one of the nation’s first serial killers.
