A translation into Old English of the first six books of the Bible, the manuscript contains over 390 images, of which 127 depict Moses with a variety of distinctive visual attributes.＜/p＞＜p＞Broderick presents a compelling thesis that these motifs, in particular the image of the horned Moses, have a Hellenistic Egyptian origin. He argues that the visual construct of Moses in the Old English Hexateuch may have been based on a Late Antique, no longer extant, prototype influenced by works of Hellenistic Egyptian Jewish exegetes, who ascribed to Moses the characteristics of an Egyptian-Hellenistic king, military commander, priest, prophet, and scribe. These Jewish writings were utilized in turn by early Christian apologists such as Clement of Alexandria and Eusebius of Caesarea. In dieser Zeit trat der Kampf der Nationalsozialisten gegen die Kirche immer offener zu Tage. Die Partei versuchte keine Gelegenheit auszulassen, um einen Keil zwischen Klerus, Kirchenleitung und Kirchenbasis zu treiben. Indem die Nationalsozialisten beispielsweise versuchten, durch inszenierte Devisen- und Sittlichkeitsprozesse den katholischen Klerus als korrupt und sittlich verkommen darzustellen, sollte eine antiklerikale Grundstimmung erzeugt werden, die das moralische Ansehen der Kirche untergraben sollte. Auch der Verleumdungsfeldzug der Nationalsozialisten, der die Antwort des Regimes auf die vatikanische Enzyklika 'Mit brennender Sorge' vom 14. M?rz 1937 darstellte, spiegelt die nun offensichtlich werdende feindliche Haltung der Nationalsozialisten gegen?ber der Kirche wieder. Einen besonderen Streitpunkt stellte immer wieder der kirchliche Einfluss auf die Schulen dar, der von der Regierung teilweise missliebig geduldet, aber auf der anderen Seite auch kompromisslos eliminiert wurde. So wurden zum Beispiel seit 1934/35 die Bekenntnisschulen gebietsweise in nationalsozialistische Deutsche Schulen umgewandelt und kirchliche Privatschulen wurden schrittweise reduziert. In dieser angespannten und feindseligen Atmosph?re kam es im November 1936 in S?doldenburg zum sogenannten Kreuzkampf.
