"Deaconesses in Europe and Their Lessons for America" by Jane M. Bancroft is a significant painting that explores the function of deaconesses in numerous European international locations and attracts treasured classes for the American context. Published in the overdue 19th century, Bancroft's book sheds light at the studies, contributions, and challenges faced by way of deaconesses in exclusive cultural and non-secular settings. The author affords an in depth examination of the origins and development of the deaconess motion, highlighting the methods wherein these dedicated girls have served their groups. Drawing from her observations and research, Bancroft emphasizes the nice impact of deaconesses in regions including healthcare, schooling, and social welfare. The book serves as both a historical account and a practical guide for the ones inquisitive about the established order and company of deaconess institutions. Bancroft's insights aren't best informative but also reflect her advocacy for the growth of deaconess work in America, suggesting that similar fashions can be tailored to deal with social wishes and demanding situations inside the United States.

Deaconesses in Europe and Their Lessons for America【電子書籍】[ Jane Bancroft ]

According to Wikipedia: "Methodism is a movement of Protestant Christianity represented by John Wesley that sought to keep Methodism as a revival movement within the Church of England, and a significant number of Anglican clergy were known as Methodists. Other 18th century branches of Methodism include Welsh Methodists, later the Calvinistic Methodists, from the work of Howell Harris, and the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion through the work of George Whitefield. The influence of Lady Huntingdon and Whitfield on the Church of England was a factor in the establishment of the Free Church of England in 1844. Through vigorous missionary activity Methodism spread throughout the British Empire, the United States, and beyond. Early Methodists were drawn from all levels of society, including aristocracy. But the Methodist preachers took the message to labourers and criminals who tended to be left outside of organised religion at that time[citation needed]. Wesley himself thought it wrong to preach outside a Church building until persuaded otherwise by Whitefield."

Sanctified Sisters A History of Protestant Deaconesses【電子書籍】[ Jenny Wiley Legath ]

The first history of the deaconess movement in the United States

In the late nineteenth century, a new movement arose within American Protestant Christianity. Unsalaried groups of women began living together, wearing plain dress, and performing nursing, teaching, and other works of welfare. Modeled after the lifestyles of Catholic nuns, these women became America’s first deaconesses.

Sanctified Sisters, the first history of the deaconess movement in the United States, traces its origins in the late nineteenth century through to its present manifestations. Drawing on archival research, demographic surveys, and material culture evidence, Jenny Wiley Legath offers new insights into who the deaconesses were, how they lived, and what their legacy has been for women in Protestant Christianity.

The book argues that the deaconess movement enabled Protestant womenーparticularly single womenーto gain power in a male-dominated Protestant world. They created hundreds of new institutions within Protestantism and created new roles for women within the church. While some who study women’s ordination draw a line from the deaconesses’ work to the struggle for women’s ordination in various branches of Protestant Christianity, Legath argues that most deaconesses were not interested in ordination. Yet, while they didn’t mean to, they did end up providing a foundation for today’s ordination debates. Their very existence worked to open the possibility of ecclesiastically authorized women’s agency.

Deaconesses An Historical Study【電子書籍】[ Fr. Aime Martimort ]

Since the 17th century the history of deaconesses in the Church has been the subject of numerous monographs. What is most evident about the history of deaconesses, however, is how complex the whole subject is. In this exhaustive and thoroughly researched work, Martimort presents a very readable analysis that has become the standard study of the role of women deaconesses in the early Church. He presents in as complete and objective fashion as possible the history, who and what these deaconesses were and what their functions were.
