Nature Near London Exploring the Urban Nature Landscape: Victorian Insights on Countryside Beauty and Wildlife Observations【電子書籍】[ Richard Jefferies ]

|

In 'Nature Near London', Richard Jefferies offers a meditative exploration of the natural world that permeates the suburbs of Victorian England. Through richly crafted prose and eloquent observations, Jefferies captures the intricate balance between humanity and nature, illustrating how urban encroachment can both inspire awe and evoke melancholy. The literary style is characterized by a lyrical quality, drawing upon elements of Romanticism while seamlessly integrating natural history, philosophical contemplation, and personal reflection, thereby situating Jefferies firmly within the tradition of nature writers who sought to illuminate the importance of the natural realm amid industrial change. Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) was a pioneering naturalist and writer whose upbringing in the English countryside profoundly influenced his worldview. Having experienced the rapid transformation of rural spaces due to industrialization, Jefferies became an ardent advocate for nature conservation and appreciation, which is vividly evident in this work. His background as a farmer's son endowed him with a deep understanding of the relationship between Earth and society, shaping his purpose in writing not only as a reflection of eco-consciousness but also as a plea for a return to nature. Readers who seek a deeper understanding of the interplay between nature and urban life will find 'Nature Near London' to be an enlightening and enriching experience. Jefferies' blend of personal introspection and keen observational skills makes this book not only a work of literature but also a vital commentary on the societal shifts impacting the natural world. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in nature writing, environmental philosophy, or the subtleties of human connection to the land.

The Medieval Account Books of the Mercers of London An Edition and Translation【電子書籍】[ Lisa Jefferson ]
|

As the premier livery company, the Mercers Company in medieval England enjoyed a prominent role in London's governance and exercised much influence over England's overseas trade and political interests. This substantial two-volume set provides a comprehensive edition of the surviving Mercers' accounts from 1347 to 1464, and opens a unique window into the day-to-day workings of one of England's most powerful institutions at the height of its influence. The accounts list income, derived from fees for apprentices and entry fees, from fines (whose cause is usually given, sometimes with many details), from gifts and bequests, from property rents, and from other sources, and then list expenditures: on salaries to priests and chaplains, to the beadle, the rent-collector, and to scribes and scriveners; on alms payments; on quit-rents due on their properties; on repairs to properties; and on a whole host of other costs, differing from year to year, and including court cases, special furnishings for the chapel or Hall, negotiations over trade with Burgundy, transport costs, funeral costs or those for attendance at state occasions, etc. Included also in some years are ordinances, deeds and other material of which they wanted to ensure a record was kept. Beginning with an early account for 1347-48, and the company's ordinances of that year, the accounts preserved form an entire block from 1390 until 1464. The material is arranged in facing-page format, with an accurate edition of the original text mirrored by a translation into modern English. A substantial introduction describes the manuscripts in full detail and explains the accounting system used by the Mercers and the financial vocabulary associated with it. Exhaustive name and subject indexes ensure that the material is easily accessible and this edition will become an essential tool for all studying the social, cultural or economic developments of late-medieval England.

Apocalypse The Plague Tales by Mary Shelley, Jack London, Richard Jefferies, Daniel Defoe【電子書籍】[ Mary Shelley ]

Apocalypse

The Plague Tales

By

Mary Shelley

Jack London

Richard Jefferies

Daniel Defoe

Back in 1826 a novel was written, The Last Manーthat tells the story of humanity’s downfall in the 21st century.

Scenes of horror increase by the hour. The disease proves unstoppable, causing the collapse of civilization. Our greatest cities become gravesites of ruin.

The author was none other than Mary Shelley, creator of the groundbreaking science-fiction/horror novel Frankenstein (1818).

And Jack London wrote science fiction.

In his The Scarlet Plague, (published 1912) it is the year 2073. Plague was killing people. People appeared not to be alarmed because they “were sure that the scientists would find a way to overcome this new germ, just as they had overcome other germs in the past.” But the plague was unstoppable. Untold millions died. Society had been set back to a nomadic existence.

After London, (published 1885) by Richard Jefferies depicts an England of the distant future in which most of humanity has either died from plague or other unnamed catastrophic events.

A Journal of the Plague Year (published 1722) is Daniel Defoe's reconstruction of the bubonic plague outbreak in the London of 1665, which claimed over 97,000 lives.

Defoe's classic reconstruction of those events is one of the most compelling accounts of natural disaster in all literature.

These four works are remarkable for their visionary audaciousness: as with H.G. Well's The Time Machine, Shelley, London, Jefferies and Defoe took the long view; and as with Well's predictions (aerial warfare, space travel, the atom bomb) they were all amazingly prescient.

JACK LONDON (1876-1916) was an activist, journalist, short-story writer, novelist, and one of the most widely translated of American authors. He was a child laborer in Oakland at 14, a Bay Area pirate at 15, a transcontinental hobo at 16, an able-bodied seaman at 17, a New York State prisoner at 18, a California ‘work beast’ at 20 and a Yukon prospector at 21. London published over 50 books, and is today most famous for The Sea Wolf, White Fang, The Call of the Wild, Martin Eden, The People of the Abyss, The Road, and John Barleycorn. His influence upon later American writers has been enormous.

DANIEL DEFOE (1660?1731) was an English writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. A prolific writer, he wrote more than five hundred books, pamphlets and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural. He is best remembered for his masterworks, Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders, and A Journal of the Plague Year.

JOHN RICHARD JEFFERIES (1848 ?1887) was an English nature writer, noted for his depiction of English life in essays, non-fiction books on natural history, and novels. The son of a Wiltshire farmer, he began his work as a reporter for the North Wiltshire Herald, and later found success through his articles written for the Pall Mall Gazette, a series of essays called The Gamekeeper at Home (1878), followed by three more collections which were first published in the Pall Mall Gazette and then in book form, including Wild Life in a Southern County and The Amateur Poacher, both appearing in 1879, and Round About a Great Estate in 1880.

MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT SHELLEY (1797-1851) wife of celebrated poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, perhaps best known for her Gothic novel creation, Frankenstein, widely considered to be one of the top 100 books of all time. Her works remain among the most profound, and beautiful in the English language.

“Ghastly beings haunted the site of so many crimes, shapeless monsters, hovering by night, and weaving a fearful dance. Frequently they caught fire as it seemed, and burned as they flew or floated in the air.”

After London, a 19th-century science fiction novel by Richard Jefferies (1848-1887), the English writer and naturalist, depicts an England of the distant future in which most of humanity has either died from plague or other unnamed catastrophic events.

A poisonous swamp now covers the site of London.

This may be the earliest novel depicting a future Earth following some calamitous event. First published in 1885, After London is now regarded as one of the most important examples of “post-apocalyptic fiction”.

The first part, The Relapse into Barbarism, is the account by some future historian of the fall of civilization and its consequences.

The second part, Wild England, is an adventure tale set years later.

The book is not without its flawsーJefferies was in uncharted waters hereーbut is redeemed by the quality of the writing, particularly his unnervingly prophetic descriptions of the post-apocalyptic city and countryside.

After London is remarkable because of its visionary audaciousness: as with H.G.
*** Original and Unabridged Content. Made available by CLASSIC COLLECTION 600.***

Synopsis:

First published in 1885, After London, or Wild England is considered to be one of the earliest instances of post-apocalyptic fiction, describing the effects of an unspecified catastrophe that dramatically changes the face of England and its population. Divided into two parts, the first depicts the fall of civilization, as society reverts to its more primitive roots, while the second part is set years after the apocalyptic event and examines the evident changes in both natural scenery and social structure. In addition, Jefferies offers a remarkable portrait of the natural world with his colorful imagery and evocative descriptions, which highlight his enthusiasm and devotion to nature.

The first part of the novel begins with Jefferies’ description of a mysterious natural disaster that has taken its toll on England, and later goes on to provide a detailed account of the resurgence of nature in the aftermath of the dire calamity. Although the source of the disaster is not clearly distinguished, its effects on society and nature are immense, as the area has been substantially depopulated and engulfed by a newly formed lake. Slowly covering any traces of the industrial world, the land welcomes the return of wildlife to its unspoiled state, as trees, flowers, and plants begin to take over the area, while animals return to their feral states. Furthermore, the society that has remained reverts to its medieval roots, divided into tribal groups and a somewhat educated class. Subsequently, the novel shifts its focus to Felix Aquila, a dignified young man who sets out on a dangerous adventure, exploring the mystifying wilderness. In addition, Felix must face numerous predicaments along the way that test his durability and fortitude.

Presenting a unique take on a post-apocalyptic world, with a generous supply of botanical detail, After London, or Wild England served as an inspiration for many writers to follow in Jefferies’ footsteps and make a contribution to the post-apocalyptic genre. Interestingly, Jefferies effectively employs nature as the dominant feature in the novel, emphasizing its presence and influence in an altered landscape. Painting a vivid illustration of unspoiled nature and illustrating the gripping notion of natural reversion and the downfall of civilization, the novel is a sure to enthrall nature enthusiasts.

You can find the complete list of CLASSIC COLLECTION 600 at the end of this ebook.
FIND AND ENJOY!

Written in 1885, the narrative shares a stark yet poignant vision of a future England returning to a pre-industrial state, as nature reclaims urban landscapes. The Soul of London - A Survey of a Modern City【電子書籍】[ Ford Madox Hueffer ]

|

This early work by Ford Madox Ford was originally published in 1905 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. Ford Madox Ford was born Ford Madox Hueffer in Merton, Surrey, England on 17th December 1873. The creative arts ran in his family - Hueffer's grandfather, Ford Madox Brown, was a well-known painter, and his German ?migr? father was music critic of The Times - and after a brief dalliance with music composition, the young Hueffer began to write. Although Hueffer never attended university, during his early twenties he moved through many intellectual circles, and would later talk of the influence that the "Middle Victorian, tumultuously bearded Great" - men such as John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle - exerted on him. In 1908, Hueffer founded the English Review, and over the next 15 months published Thomas Hardy, H. G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, Henry James, John Galsworthy and W. B. Yeats, and gave d?buts to many authors, including D. H. Lawrence and Norman Douglas. Hueffer's editorship consolidated the classic canon of early modernist literature, and saw him earn a reputation as of one of the century's greatest literary editors. Ford's most famous work was his Parade's End tetralogy, which he completed in the 1920's and have now been adapted into a BBC television drama. Ford continued to write through the thirties, producing fiction, non-fiction, and two volumes of autobiography: Return to Yesterday (1931) and It was the Nightingale (1933). In his last years, he taught literature at the Olivet College in Michigan. Ford died on 26th June 1939 in Deauville, France, at the age of 65.

The Relapse into Barbarism CHAPTER I ー THE GREAT FOREST The old men say their fathers told them that soon after the fields were left to themselves a change began to be visible. It became green everywhere in the first spring, after London ended, so that all the country looked alike. The meadows were green, and so was the rising wheat which had been sown, but which neither had nor would receive any Further care. Such arable fields as had not been sown, but where the last stubble had been ploughed up, were overrun with couch-grass, and where the short stubble had not been ploughed, the weeds hid it. So that there was no place which was not more or less green; the footpaths were the greenest of all, for such is the nature of grass where it has once been trodden on, and by-and-by, as the summer came on, the former roads were thinly covered with the grass that had spread out from the margin. In the autumn, as the meadows were not mown, the grass withered as it stood, falling this way and that, as the wind had blown it; the seeds dropped, and the bennets became a greyish-white, or, where the docks and sorrel were thick, a brownish-red. The wheat, after it had ripened, there being no one to reap it, also remained standing, and was eaten by clouds of sparrows, rooks, and pigeons, which flocked to it and were undisturbed, feasting at their pleasure. As the winter came on, the crops were beaten down by the storms, soaked with rain, and trodden upon by herds of animals

In 'After London,' Richard Jefferies crafts a hauntingly vivid post-apocalyptic narrative that explores the remnants of civilization following an ecological disaster. This novel, blending elements of Victorian romanticism and early science fiction, presents a richly imagined landscape where nature reclaims humanity's abandoned territories. Jefferies employs a lyrical prose style, filled with intricate descriptions and a philosophical undercurrent that questions the relationship between man and the environment, masterfully situating his work within the literary context of environmentalism and dystopian literature that would become prominent much later in the 20th century. Richard Jefferies, an English nature writer, and philosopher, was profoundly influenced by the natural world and the social changes of his time. His firsthand experiences of rural life and deep contemplation of the human condition informed the ideological threads within 'After London.' The author's personal struggles, particularly with tuberculosis, as well as his advocacy for the preservation of nature, permeate the text, enriching the ecological themes and highlighting humanity's fragility in the face of inevitable change. For readers intrigued by the fate of civilization and the intricate dance between nature and humanity, 'After London' proves to be an essential read. Letters to London Bonhoeffer's previously unpublished correspondence with Ernst Cromwell, 1935-36【電子書籍】[ Dietrich Bonhoeffer ]

Giving you valuable insight into Dietrich Bonhoeffer's public spirituality, theology from the perspective of his private life and concerns. In this first collection of the Lutheran pastors letters, this founding member of the Confessing Church, who would be martyred for his active resistance to the Nazi movement, you will find intimate and revealing details essential to the serious Bonhoeffer student and interested reader.

His character and relationships, practice as a pastor and developing theological and political thought, revealed in these previously unknown and unpublished letters, are skilfully and sensitively edited by one of the world's most Bonhoeffer scholar.

The letters have their origin in the dispirited 27 year old's acceptance of a two year appointment to two German-speaking Protestant churches in London: the German Evangelical Church in Sydenham and the German Reformed Church of St Paul's, Whitechapel in the Autumn of 1933. As German churches acquiesced to Hitler's growing power, Bonhoeffer found little support for his views deciding that "it was about time to go for a while into the desert".

Fellow theologian, Karl Barth, regarded this as running away from real battle accusing Bonhoeffer of abandoning his post and wasting his "splendid theological armory" while "the house of your church is on fire."

The letters help explain Bonhoeffer's hopes that, in going to England, he was not simply avoiding trouble at home; but hoping for support from the ecumenical movement in the interest of his anti-Nazi Confessing Church.

Bonhoeffer rallied people to oppose the Nazi subversion of the Gospel to the extent that Bishop Theodor Heckel - the official in charge of German Evangelical Church foreign affairs, was sent to London to warn Bonhoeffer to abstain from any activity not authorized by Berlin.

Bonhoeffer refused to desist from his work. This is the momentous background to this collection of globally significant letters with relevance to formulating the Christian response to the divisive religious and secular forces in the world today.

"Remarkable in its early take on the apocalypse." ー examiner.com
A catastrophe has descended upon England. London is now a pestilent swamp, dotted with the ghostly remains of ancient buildings. A giant lake dominates the center of the country, towns have collapsed and given way to forests, and the few scattered survivors have descended into barbarism. Amid the ruins of civilization and a countryside ravaged by warring tribes, a lone hero undertakes a quest to prove himself worthy of his beloved.
Characterized by the Observer as "the most beautiful of Victorian novels," this 1885 tale pioneered the post-apocalyptic genre of science fiction. Author Richard Jefferies was a noted naturalist, and his scientific expertise informs the evocative descriptions of birds, plants, and animals. An avid lover of wilderness, Jeffries devised a fantasy that places humanity in a state closer to nature. After London influenced William Morris, J. R .R. Tolkien, and countless other writers, and it remains a haunting tale of environmental collapse and dynamic adventure.

|

The Collins Nature Library is a new series of classic British nature writing ? reissues of long-lost seminal works. The titles have been chosen by one of Britain’s best known and highly acclaimed nature writers, Robert Macfarlane, who has also written new introductions that put these classics into a modern context.

Nature Near London is a collection of observational pieces from locations near London at the end of the 19th Century. The depth of knowledge and of familiarity with particular places and particular species gives the impression that each small piece is the product of many years of observation.

His style of observation is a work in miniature ? cataloguing the most minute details; the dancing of a flower in the wind or the darting of a cautious trout. The chapters centre on a special place, a certain species, geographical feature or habitat ? everything from orchards and copses to rivers and streams.

Jefferies always explains the typical behaviour of whatever he is describing, and often contrasts what he sees with what one would expect to see in another part of the country, or in a different season. His knowledge of flowers is wide-ranging, and his ability to describe one particular patch of a field in such a specific way brings tremendous variety to the chapters that make up the book.

The final chapters are a departure ? both from the character of the rest of the book, and from London itself, as Jefferies boards the train to Brighton. Suddenly he is describing people and their relationship to nature, as much as nature itself. The scope widens, less a work in miniature, more surging towards a triumphant end as Jefferies becomes ever more philosophical.

100 years on, the book becomes even more relevant than when it was published ? as a reminder of the dangers of unrelenting urbanisation, but also the context of the trend that aims to recreate nature where we need it most ? around our cities. Nature near London is a portrait of what we’ve lost, and a reminder of nature’s positive and calming influence. Going along with Jefferies is like taking an afternoon stroll out of the city, without having to leave your armchair.
