The Picture Postcard A new window into Edwardian Ireland【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

The Picture Postcard, a new window into Edwardian Ireland uses the material culture of the picture postcard as a lens through which to examine life on the island of Ireland during the Edwardian period (1902-10). Picture postcards became extremely popular worldwide at the start of the twentieth century, when literally hundreds of billions of them were produced and sold.

This book draws on postcard collections to access the everyday lives of people who rarely make it into conventional historical narratives, and to make connections in an Irish context between their ≪small histories≫ and broader, well-studied discourses such as identity, nationalism, empire, modernity, emigration, tourism and the roles of women.

Giving Shape to the Moment The Art of Mary O'Donnell: Poet, Novelist and Short Story Writer【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

This is the first book to provide a critical assessment of the work of the Irish author Mary O’Donnell. The essays collected here engage with O’Donnell’s writing across multiple genres and explore the themes and preoccupations that have characterized her oeuvre. Alongside her creative work, O’Donnell’s has been a steady and continuing voice for many years within the world of theatre criticism, book reviewing, essay writing, radio broadcasts and cultural commentary.

As a writer, O’Donnell’s principal themes include contemporary Irish society, the position of women in Ireland and the role of the artist. Throughout her career, her approach has been unconventional and her work has sometimes presented a challenge to the status quo. The contributors to this volume illuminate O’Donnell’s role as a humanist writer searching for truth at all costs, through the fictive lives of her often unusual characters, and through the emotional range and depth of her poetry.

The Irish Short Story Traditions and Trends【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

Often hailed as a ‘national genre’, the short story has a long and distinguished tradition in Ireland and continues to fascinate readers and writers alike. Critical appreciation of the Irish short story, however, has laboured for too long under the normative conception of it as a realist form, used to depict quintessential truths about Ireland and Irish identity. This definition fails to do justice to the richness and variety of short stories published in Ireland since the 1850s. This collection aims to open up the critical debate on the Irish short story to the many different concerns, influences and innovations by which it has been formed. The essays gathered here consider the diverse national and international influences on the Irish short story and investigate its genealogy. They recover the short fiction of writers neglected in previous literary histories and highlight unexpected strands in the work of established writers. They scrutinize established traditions and use cutting-edge critical frameworks to discern new trends. Taken together, the essays contribute to a more encompassing and enabling view of the Irish short story as a hybrid, multivalent and highly flexible literary form, which is forever being reshaped to meet new insights, new influences and new realities.

The Politics of Irish Primary Education Reform in an Era of Secularisation【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

This book provides a comprehensive study of educational policy reform as growing calls for further reducing the role of the Catholic Church in Irish primary schools gains traction in a rapidly evolving Irish society. Drawing upon lessons from the same-sex marriage and abortion reform campaigns, this study provides several policy case studies that demonstrate how the interplay of civil society activists and organisations, the media, public opinion, and political parties and elites determines how policy reforms live or die. The book contains a rich and novel set of data, including interviews with leaders and elites from the major actors and institutions, numbers and trends from previously unreleased data from the Church and Department of Education, evidence from the authors’ originally designed and implemented parliamentary surveys, an original analysis of media coverage of educational issues and actors involved in the main educational reform debates, and detailed case studies of divestment, admissions, and curriculum policy reforms. Scholars, policy gurus, activists, politicians and teachers, students, and parents each have something to learn from this compelling study.

Women, Families and the British Army, 1700?1880 Vol 3【電子書籍】[ Jennine Hurl-Eamon ]

This series concentrates on women and the soldiers in the ranks whose lives they shared, assembling a wide body of evidence of their romantic entanglements and domestic concerns. The new military history of recent decades has demanded a broadening of the source base beyond elite accounts or those that concentrate solely on battlefield experiences. Armies did not operate in isolation, and men’s family ties influenced the course of events in a variety of ways. Campfollowing women and children occupied a liminal space in campaign life. Those who travelled "on the strength" of the army received rations in return for providing services such as laundry and nursing, but they could also be grouped with prostitutes and condemned as a ‘burden’ by officers. Parents, wives, and offspring left behind at home remained in soldiers’ thoughts, despite an army culture aimed at replacing kin with regimental ties. Soldiers’ families’ suffering, both on the march and back in Britain, attracted public attention at key points in this period as well.

This series provides, for the first time in one place, a wide body of texts relating to common soldiers’ personal lives: the women with whom they became involved, their children, and the families who cared for them. It brings hitherto unpublished material into print for the first time, and resurrects accounts that have not been in wide circulation since the nineteenth century. The collection combines the observations of officers, government officials and others with memoirs and letters from men in the ranks, and from the women themselves. It draws extensively on press accounts, especially in the nineteenth century. It also demonstrates the value of using literary depictions alongside the letters, diaries, memoirs and war office papers that form the traditional source base of military historians.

This third volume includes personal accounts of service in the Napoleonic Wars Era.

The Irish Catholic Diaspora Five centuries of global presence【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

≪The Irish missionary momentum in the 19th century attests to the vitality of a Christian community whose richness and great diversity this book illustrates, with particular emphasis placed on the considerable effort made in the field of education, a privileged way for human promotion and the proclamation of the Gospel.≫

(Bernard Ardura, President, Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences)

≪This book is a wonderful read: well researched, fascinating, clear, insightful and learned. It is an exceptional testimony of the achievements of the Irish Religious Diaspora. It is fundamental reading during a period in which our country has become a destination country, hosting so many from all parts of the globe. Although a small country on the periphery of Europe, Ireland was capable of projecting its values and culture globally through its diaspora. The Irish religious diaspora, as illustrated so deftly in this book, is a notable example of this throughout the ages. This book informs us and reminds us so well of the extraordinary efforts and tireless endeavours of the Hiberno-Roman missionaries in exporting Irish Catholic values globally over past centuries. The book is a pleasure to read.≫

(Patricia O’Brien, Ambassador of Ireland in Rome)

Sourcing the circulation, settlement and influence of the Irish religious groups in continental Europe, the Americas, Australia and South Africa, the volume starts in Lisbon in the sixteenth century. How did Lisbon become the hub of Irish trade and the seat of the Irish Catholic Church in exile after the Reformation? Where did it move on from there in modern and contemporary times? At a time when Irish missionaries have largely returned home to a country that has often been described as ≪post-Catholic≫, this collection brings together historians and literary critics who trace the trajectories, destinies, acculturation and shifting senses of identity of Irish Catholic clerics and missionaries across the globe from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Studies of postwar Europe, Latin America and South Africa show the modern expression of the Irish Catholic missionary movement, as well as some of the same spiritual and ethical preoccupations that are captured in the literary works of some of the most famous French, Irish and Irish-American authors.

Telling Truths Evelyn Conlon and the Task of Writing【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

Evelyn Conlon is one of Ireland’s most important writers. She has published four collections of short stories, My Head is Opening (1987), Taking Scarlet as a Real Colour (1993), Telling: New and Selected Short Stories (2000) and Moving about the Place (2021) and four novels, Stars in the Daytime (1989), A Glassful of Letters (1998) Skin of Dreams (2003) and Not the Same Sky (2013). She has also edited Later On: The Monaghan Bombing Memorial Anthology (2004).

Telling Truths: Evelyn Conlon and the Task of Writing is the first book to provide a critical assessment of her work. Drawing on a variety of perspectives such as feminism, ethics, famine studies, mobility studies, translation studies, short fiction, narratology and historiographic metafiction, the essays gathered in this volume reveal that Conlon’s writing, characterised by sharp observation, insistently questions the predetermined course of female existence, explores alternative forms of freedom and ultimately reflects her commitment to seek and tell truths. The intersectional approach of the book is part of a current endeavour in Irish Studies to keep interrogating well established topics, to examine the elusiveness of others and to explore new boundaries through renewed epistemological and ethical positions.

Following the recent advancements in Irish lesbian politics, North and South, lesbian writing is attracting more attention from scholarly audiences, making this body of work particularly timely. Irish Lesbian Writing Across Time is an attestation of a historical presence of lesbians in Irish literature, as it analyses the progression of Irish lesbian narrative over the past two centuries, while verifying key characteristics of time periods that correspond with the model of development. It also investigates Irish lesbian activist literature, writing from diaspora, and fiction published around the time of the decriminalisation of homosexual acts and later the inclusion of same-sex marriage in Irish and Northern Irish laws.

The book examines authors such as Maria Edgeworth, Sarah Grand, George Egerton, Elizabeth Bowen, Kate O’Brien, Edna O’Brien, Emma Donoghue, Mary Dorcey, Anna Livia, Shani Mootoo, and Hilary McCollum, whose inclusion of lesbian desire to the Irish literary canon proves an invaluable contribution.

A ‘proper’ woman? One woman’s story of success and failure in academia【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

≪A fascinating, well-paced, beautifully written memoir.≫

(Professor Sarah Moore Fitzgerald, Author and Director, MA in Creative Writing, University of Limerick, Ireland)

≪A wonderfully honest, often witty, personal account from someone who experienced discrimination -and challenged it - at every level of academia. So much of what has changed for women in recent decades is chronicled through Pat’s life, research and actions. A tour de force.≫

(Micheline Sheehy Skeffington, plant ecologist and feminist activist)

≪This book evokes the lived experience of a woman who, out of her time, marshalled the brains, the courage and--I have to say it--the sheer bloody-minded and tireless determination to confront others with one question: ‘why?’. Asking the question came at no small personal cost, but--slowly and surely--it started to prise open some of the seemingly impenetrable male-centric power edifices that exist across academia; openings which now give so many others hope. Don’t be afraid of reading this book about the lifetime of someone who asked why, it may just inspire you to do the same.≫

(Paul Walton, Professor of Chemistry, University of York, UK and international gender equality advocate)

This book, written by an insider, explores experiences over a 46-year career in five academic organisations in Ireland and the UK: moving from contract research assistant to full professor and line manager (Dean). Highlighting success and failure, strength and fragility, it challenges ideas about what it is to be a ‘proper' woman. It describes the subtle and relentless processes of devaluation, marginalisation and disempowerment that are often ‘normalised.’ Written in a clear accessible style, with flashes of humour, it asks whose interests are served by taken-for-granted ideas about what it is to be a woman ? ideas which deny the reality of many women’s day-to-day experiences. Who wants us to think that all women find identity and satisfaction in housework and child care? Who wants us to think that universities are meritocratic institutions? The book will inspire and entertain all those who have struggled in any male-dominated organisation and wondered if they were the problem.

Big Fellow, Long Fellow. A Joint Biography of Collins and De Valera A Joint Biography of Irish politicians Michael Collins and Eamon De Valera【電子書籍】[ T. Ryle Dwyer ]

Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera were the two most charismatic leaders of the Irish revolution. This joint biography looks first at their very different upbringings and early careers. Both fought in the 1916 Easter Rising , although it is almost certain they did not meet during that tumultuous week. Their first encounter came when Collins had been released from jail after the rising but de Valera was still inside. Collins was one of those who wanted to run a Sinn F?in candidate in the Longford by-election of 1917. De Valera and other leaders opposed this initiative but the Collins group went ahead anyway and the candidate won narrowly. The incident typified the relationship between the two men: they were vastly different in temperament and style. But it was precisely in their differences and contradictions that their fascination lay. De Valera, the political pragmatist, hoped to secure independence through political agitation, whereas the ambitious Collins, with his restless temperament and boundless energy, was an impassioned patriot who believed in terror and assassination. T. Ryle Dwyer examines the years, 1917-22 through the twists and turns of their careers. In an epilogue, he considers the legacy of Collins on de Valera's political life.

Consuming Irish Children Advertising and the Art of Independence, 1860?1921【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

As far as Irish history is concerned, consuming Irish children was not only a matter for Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal. Late nineteenth-century Ireland saw the emergence of a thriving home-grown advertising industry, and the Irish child played a pivotal role in developing a nascent consumer state from the 1860s until 1921. Through extensive analysis of advertising copy, historical materials, ephemera and literature, this study links the child-centred consumer culture of Victorian Ireland with its impact on the establishment of the independent state. This form of ≪Celtic consumerism≫ was also evident in Scotland following the Gaelic Revival, positioning the child as the newest participant in a national process of consumption. Due to high child literacy rates, which outstripped those of mainland Britain, Ireland’s children were appealed to as literate consumers in advertising copy and were informed of the perils or benefits of consumer culture in late Victorian Irish literature. This book presents a fascinating picture of the role of the child in the Irish marketplace at the fin de si?cle, as well as investigating simultaneous developments in the Irish education system and laws concerning the care and welfare of children.

Authority and Wisdom in the New Ireland Studies in Literature and Culture【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

Since the end of the nineteenth century, Ireland has witnessed a profound reconfiguration of its cultural, political, constitutional and religious identities, resulting in an unparalleled questioning of the dominant discourses and narratives that have seemingly defined the nation. The essays in this collection examine the ways in which established Irish socio-cultural structures of authority and their constructs of collective identity have been challenged within literary and cultural discourses of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Every challenge to the purported wisdom of these authority structures adds a new facet to the complexity of Irish national identity and contributes to the continuous evolution of the ‘New Ireland’, a phrase often used to signify the momentous transformations of the country in times of change.

Eden Shrugged Unabridged Edition “For the Last Shall Be First”【電子書籍】[ Eamon Mc Ghee Jr. ]

This is for all the Mary Magdalenes of the world.

“A spiritual fantasy that presents an alternative morality based on the reservoir of kindness and goodness that abides in the primal instincts and desires of women of passion.”

This is a spiritual form of erotica, not for voyeurs or prudes, that reconciles reality with morality, sexuality, and spirituality. Feminists interpreting the scriptures as written while condemning the white-male-dominated evangelical fundamentalist movement may nudge some readers out of their comfort zone, but this compelling new erotic novel that transcends fiction will force readers to redefine God and the rules of engagement in the game of love.

This is an adult, erotic fairy tale about one family’s journey through life and the obstacles they overcame with their never-ending love, passion, desire, and loyalty. The story begins with the coming of age of Melissa Stark. It chronicles her identity crisis as she struggles with her sexuality and her antiestablishment tendencies, trying to reconcile the way things are with the way she thought things ought to be. The story then becomes interwoven with the fabric of life for the rest of her loving and caring family. Melissa was a passionate, rebellious young girl who came from a long line of fiercely independent, liberated women. In the biblical sense, she was the youngest of three generations of modern-day Mary Magdalene?type nymphomaniacs. Like her mother and grandmother before her, she struggled with her passions and desires as she fought back against the oppressive persecution of the religious fundamentalists. She was a free-spirited truth seeker, wise beyond her years. Her relentless pursuit of the stream of consciousness of a higher power brought her to an Eden-like place full of peace and love and tolerance. The story chronicles the connection between divine intervention and a series of incredible coincidences that made her family’s unconventional love come full cycle.

This story also explores the inherent connection between spirituality and sexuality that defines us all as human beings and sanctifies our primal essence. The family in this story clung to one another in times of tragedy and loss, and they nurtured one another with love and kindness and understanding. Their love and kindness and empathy enabled them to survive the suffocating dominance and persecution of the evangelical fundamentalists who were envious of their love and passion. This story strongly rejects the pop culture myth that men are from Mars and women are from Venus as a frivolous rationalization that could lead to the acceptance of misogyny and reverse misogyny. This story strongly suggests that we are all from one placeーEden.

Reconciling reality with normality and morality may well be one of the most monumental tasks any human being can ever undertake. Most folks just put this task in the hands of God and muddle through. The lovable, good-natured children of Eden in this story also delegated this task to God, and it all worked out well for them. You might end up loving and identifying with many of the major characters in this story if you outsource your judgmental inhibitions to God and be one with your creator. It is my fervent wish that this frugal chariot I am offering you bears your human soul to a place of peace and love and tolerance.

Conversations with a Loudmouth: The Eamon Dunphy Tapes【電子書籍】[ Joe Jackson ]

In 1996 Joe Jackson, a journalist from The Irish Times, sat down with Eamon Dunphy, at his request , and interviewed the Irish ex-footballer, sports commentator, and author of books such as The Unforgettable Fire: The Story of U2, for 11 hours over a two-day period. It was one of the longest interviews Jackson ever conducted and is still regarded by Dunphy as “definitive.” At the time it created a media furore in Ireland, particularly in terms of dump his attacks on Irish broadcasting legends such as Gay Byrne, Gerry Ryan and Pat Kenny.
However inexplicably removed from the magazine in which the two-part article appeared was, for example, Dunphy’s sometimes scathing commentary on U2, in terms of his experience with the band, before and after he wrote their official biography. That section has been restored for this, the first full, uncensored version of the legendary interview, which the author has based on his original typescript.
Also included is a follow-up interview in 2000, which address many of the claims made in the previous interview and the controversies it fired. The author has written a new backstory for all interviews, which tells of many nights he spent partying with Eamon Dunphy and the night clubs of Dublin, when the city was a cultural capital of the world, during the 1990s. “There are other versions of the 1996 interview available,“ says Jackson, “but, as with that U2 anecdote, they are heavily edited and not at all representative of the once-in-a-lifetime experience I had with Eamon Dunphy, or the tale I tell for the first time in detail in this book.” The book accompanies Jackson’s new podcast series, The Joe Jackson Interviews Podcast in which one edition focused on the 1996 Eamon Dunphy interview.

An adult erotic fairytale about one familys journey through life and the obstacles they overcame with their never-ending love, passion, desire, and loyalty. The story begins with the coming of age of Melissa Stark. It chronicles her identity crisis as she struggles with her sexuality and her anti-establishment tendencies trying to reconcile the way things are with the way she thought things ought to be. The story then becomes interwoven with the fabric of life of the rest of her loving and caring family. Melissa was a passionate, rebellious young girl who came from a long line of fiercely independent, liberated women. In the biblical sense, she was the youngest of three generations of modern-day Mary Magdalene type nymphomaniacs. Like her mother and grandmother before her she struggled with her passions and desires as she fought back against the oppressive persecution of the religious fundamentalists. She was a free-spirited truth seeker, wise beyond her years. Her relentless pursuit of the stream of consciousness of a higher power brought her to an Eden-like place full of peace and love and tolerance. The story chronicles the connection between divine intervention and a series of incredible coincidences that made her familys unconventional love come full cycle. This story also explores the inherent connection between spirituality and sexuality that defines us all as human beings and sanctifies our primal essence. The family in this story clung to each other in times of tragedy and loss, and they nurtured each other with love and kindness and understanding. This story strongly suggests that we are all from one placeEden. This familys nonpolitical, unbiased interpretation of the scriptures and their unconventional social values may make you question everything youve been carefully taught about God and the rules of engagement in the game of love. You will need to remove all of the puritanical fig leaves that have been planted in your brain by society to appreciate the eternal beauty of this family. If any of the scenes in this story are offensive to you, consider that to be your wake-up call. You have just failed the puritanical fig leaf litmus test. You have allowed too many puritanical fundamentalist fig leaves to be planted in your brain by society; its time for you to do some leaf pruning before its too late. Its time to declare your very own spiritual and social Emancipation Proclamation and live and let live.

The Stripping of the Altars Traditional Religion in England, 1400?1580, Second Edition【電子書籍】[ Eamon Duffy ]

This prize-winning account of the pre-Reformation church recreates lay people’s experience of religion in fifteenth-century England. Eamon Duffy shows that late medieval Catholicism was neither decadent nor decayed, but was a strong and vigorous tradition, and that the Reformation represented a violent rupture from a popular and theologically respectable religious system. For this edition, Duffy has written a new Preface reflecting on recent developments in our understanding of the period.
From reviews of the first edition:
“A magnificent scholarly achievement [and] a compelling read.”ーPatricia Morrison, Financial Times
“Deeply imaginative, movingly written, and splendidly illustrated. . . . Duffy’s analysis . . . carries conviction.”ーMaurice Keen, New York Review of Books
“This book will afford enjoyment and enlightenment to layman and specialist alike.”ーPeter Heath, Times Literary Supplement
“[An] astonishing and magnificent piece of work.”ーEdward T.
This book traces the steady decline in Irish Catholicism from the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1979 up to the Cloyne report into clerical sex abuse in that diocese in 2011. The young people awaiting the Pope’s address in Galway were entertained by two of Ireland’s most charismatic clerics, Bishop Eamon Casey and Fr Michael Cleary, both of whom were subsequently revealed to have been engaged in romantic liaisons at the time.

The decades that followed the Pope’s visit were characterised by the increasing secularisation of Irish society.
Boasting an impressive array of contributors from various backgrounds and expertise, the essays in the book attempt to trace the exact reasons for the progressive dismantling of the cultural legacy of Catholicism and the consequences this has had on Irish society.

Islam and Sectarian Violence in Pakistan The Terror Within【電子書籍】[ Eamon Murphy ]

This book analyses the growth of sectarian-based terrorist violence in Pakistan, one of the Muslim majority states most affected by sectarian violence, ever since it was established in 1947.

Sectarian violence among Muslims has emerged as a major global security problem in recent years. The author argues that the upsurge in sectarian violence in Pakistan, particularly since the late 1970s, has had less to do with theological differences between the various sects of Islam, but is a consequence of the specific political, social, economic, demographic and cultural changes that have taken place in Pakistan since it was established as an independent state. A major theme of the book is the increasing violence, extent and expressions of sectarian conflict which have emerged as new forms of sectarian terrorism. The volume provides an in-depth empirical case study which addresses some major theoretical questions raised by Critical Terrorism Studies researchers in respect of the links between religion and sectarian terrorism in Pakistan and more widely.

This book will be of much interest to students of critical terrorism studies, Asian politics and history, religious studies and International Relations in general.

The Crossings of Art in Ireland【電子書籍】[ Eamon Maher ]

The essays in this volume explore interartistic connections in Irish literature, drama, film and the visual arts. Within modern and postmodern culture, innovation is often driven by surprising interrelations between the arts, and this book offers a discussion of this phenomenon and analyses a number of artworks that move across disciplines. Several contributors examine the concept of ekphrasis, looking at how Irish writers such as Seamus Heaney, John Banville, Paul Muldoon, Ciaran Carson, Patrick Kavanagh, W.B. Yeats and Samuel Beckett have responded to the visual arts. Others explore interartistic ‘crossings’ in the drama of Brian Friel, in James Barry’s eighteenth-century Shakespeare paintings and in contemporary Irish film. Together, the essays present a fresh perspective on Irish artistic culture and open up new avenues for future study.

The Church of Mary Tudor【電子書籍】[ Eamon Duffy ]

The reign of Queen Mary is popularly remembered largely for her re-introduction of Catholicism into England, and especially for the persecution of Protestants, memorably described in John Foxe's Acts and Monuments. Mary's brief reign has often been treated as an aberrant interruption of England's march to triumphant Protestantism, a period of political sterility, foreign influence and religious repression rightly eclipsed by the happier reign of her more sympathetic half-sister, Elizabeth. In pursuit of a more balanced assessment of Mary's religious policies, this volume explores the theology, pastoral practice and ecclesiastical administration of the Church in England during her reign. Focusing on the neglected Catholic renaissance which she ushered in, the book traces its influences and emphases, its methods and its rationales - together the role of Philip's Spanish clergy and native English Catholics - in relation to the wider influence of the continental Counter Reformation and Mary's humanist learning. Measuring these issues against the reintroduction of papal authority into England, and the balance between persuasion and coercion used by the authorities to restore Catholic worship, the volume offers a more nuanced and balanced view of Mary's religious policies. Addressing such intriguing and under-researched matters from a variety of literary, political and theological perspectives, the essays in this volume cast new light, not only on Marian Catholicism, but also on the wider European religious picture.
